Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will conduct an investigation on stand-in captain Chamara Kapugedera’s controversial decision to bat first in the third ODI against India at Pallekele on Sunday.

During a team meeting, Sri Lanka had decided to chase after losing the first two ODIs batting first. Captain Kapugedera had been instructed by team management and coaching staff to chase if he won the toss, but he did the exact opposite.

Indian captain Virat Kohli had won five tosses in a row and it was the first time that Sri Lanka had won the toss and Kapugedera’s decision surprised many.

Sri Lanka’s batsmen struggled as the ball seamed around quite a bit and their eventual total of 217 for nine in 50 overs proved to be child’s play to the strong Indian outfit.

India won with six wickets to spare and as they were closing in on victory, angry fans expressed their displeasure by throwing objects to the ground.

The Island revealed the Kapugedera incident in Tuesday’s edition. A member of the coaching staff had ruled out foul play saying Kapugedera had ‘brain fade’. However, a leading SLC official told The Island that the matter is now under investigation.

Even more relevant investigation is how the heck Kapu is even in the side let alone be the captain of the side.

I have always wondered what he is doing in the team when he averages 20 as a middle-order batsman after 100 matches...

Is the present board comprised of inexperienced and immature individuals?
This is normal. Happens many times.

SLC seriously takes the cake in being the worst, respect to how Sanga,Jaya,Malinga managed to deal with such a board and the bitter ex player.

Not surprising, how can he play 100 matches with avg of 20 ? Perhaps selectors had doubts about his shady behavior and maybe thats why they instructed him what to do after winning the toss.

Because he didn't play county cricket in the 1950s?

:)))

Tbh, SLC are justified here. Odd for a captain to go against the team management decision especially given that he is standing in.

Holy they've made Kapu the captain the man debut back decades ago SL's Imran Farhat

I would prefer if they sought an explanation for his decision rather than a full-on "investigation". I also wonder if they woul have praised him for going against management advice had they won the match.

Had he fielded first then India would have piled on nearly 400 runs batting first, as they did in the fourth ODI.
