Bangladesh fought back on the second day against Sri Lanka, but half-centuries from Oshada Fernando and Niroshan Dickwella helped the hosts post 469/6. After resuming on the second morning at 307/3, Lahiru Thirimanne, the overnight centurion, and Fernando extended their partnership to 104, with Fernando bringing up his half-century.

The well-settled duo looked good to boost the total to mammoth proportions, but the Bangladesh bowlers, who managed just the solitary wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne on opening day, had more going for them on Friday. The pacer Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the lot. He provided the much-needed breakthrough in the morning, dismissing Thirimanne, who could add only nine more runs to his overnight total.

The visitors missed an opportunity to dismiss Angelo Mathews, failing to appeal despite Ultra Edge later revealing an edge. However, it didn't prove a costly miss, with Taskin inducing an edge to dismiss Mathews for five.

Taijul Islam got into the act, picking up the prized wicket of Dhananjaya de Silva (2), and by lunch, Sri Lanka were restricted to 43 runs for three wickets in the session.

Sri Lanka enjoyed a positive start in the second session thanks to Fernando and Pathum Nissanka. The duo amassed 54 runs for the fifth wicket, edging Sri Lanka closer to the 400-run mark. However, the duo fell in quick succession.

Taskin, in his first over after the break, snared Nissanka for 30, and Mehidy Hasan ended Fernando's superb knock in the very next over, the batsman edging one through to Liton Das behind the stumps.

Unfortunately for Bangladesh, they couldn't wrap up the Sri Lanka lower order. Niroshan Dickwella played a fine counterattacking knock alongside Ramesh Mendis.

Rain and subsequent bad light then interrupted proceedings, but in a brief period of resumption, Dickwella continued taking the attack to the bowlers. He brought up his half-century at quicker than a run-a-ball, and his 87-run unbeaten stand with Mendis (22*) helped arrest Sri Lanka's slide.

Bad light forced play to be called off thereafter, but Sri Lanka will hope the partnership can continue on the third morning.

Five-wicket haul for Praveen Jayawickrama

He becomes only the fifth Sri Lankan bowler to take a five-for in an innings on Test debut.

Jayawickrama's dream debut blunts Bangladesh on moving day

A dream debut for Praveen Jayawickrama helped Sri Lanka restrict Bangladesh to 251/10, extending their first-innings lead to 259 runs at stumps.

Jayawickrama returned 6/92 – the best innings figures on Test debut for Sri Lanka – as Bangladesh were bundled out for 251 after Sri Lanka extended their total to 493/7 in the morning, before declaring their innings closed. Niroshan Dickwella’s quickfire 77* helped Sri Lanka approach the 500-run mark.

Bangladesh were then bundled out thanks to Jayawickrama's brilliant spell, before Sri Lanka opted not to enforce follow-on and went into stumps at 17/2.

In the morning, Bangladesh began their innings well, thanks to Tamim Iqbal’s counter-attacking 92. He brought up his fifty in just 57 deliveries – it was his fourth consecutive half-century in the format.

At the cusp of lunch, the Sri Lankan spinners effected a double-blow on the visitors. Jayawickrama picking his maiden test wicket, inducing the edge from Saif Hassan (25), who was caught at slips. Ramesh Mendis dismissed the new man Najmul Hossain Shanto for duck in the very next over, and Bangladesh went to lunch for 99/2 in 27 overs.

After the break, Tamim joined forces with Mominul Haque to reorient Bangladesh’s innings. The duo amassed 52 runs in 98 balls for the third wicket, and they looked good for a lot more. However, it was young Jayawickrama who confounded them again. A change of angle from the left-arm spinner brought about natural variation off the pitch – Tamim erred and was caught at slips for a 150-ball 92.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul paired up for a 63-run stand to resist, but Jayawickrama was back again to dimiss Rahim for 40 at the stroke of tea. The visitors increasingly struggled again spin, collapsing from from 214/4 to 251 all out. With a lead of 242 runs and two whole days left in the game, Sri Lanka decided against enforcing the follow-on.

Coming out to bat in the second innings, the hosts lost two wickets in quick succession as Bangladesh employed spinners from the first over. Sri Lanka will commence day four with Dimuth Karunaratne (13*) and Angelo Mathews (1*) looking to add some important runs.

Sri Lanka in Bangladesh 2021 – BCB announces Preliminary Squad

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announces the preliminary squad for Sri Lanka’s Tour of Bangladesh 2021 :

Tamim Iqbal, Naim Sheikh, Imrul Kayes, Liton Kumer Das, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Moaddek Hossain Saikat, Mahedi Hasan, Mehidy Hassan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Shaif Uddin, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Shohidul Islam.

Despite a five-wicket haul from Taijul Islam, Sri Lanka look to be in the driver's seat heading into day five tomorrow, requiring five wickets to win.

Sri Lanka added 155 runs in the first session thanks to Dimuth Karunaratne's 66, backed by Dhananjaya de Silva's 41. Taijul Islam's five-wicket haul helped limit the damage.

The hosts declared at 194/9, setting a huge target of 437 for Bangladesh to chase.

Chasing a mammoth total, the Bangladesh openers got off to a quick start, adding 31 runs within the first seven overs. They looked to be well-settled as they attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers. However, the opening stand was broken by Ramesh Mendis after he drew an edge from Tamim Iqbal, finding Niroshan Dickwella behind the stumps.

Saif Hassan and Najmul Shanto continued the innings with an intent to attack. However, this proved to be their undoing as Praveen Jayawickrama carried on with his dream debut dealing the double blow, removing Saif for 34 and then, going through the gates of Najmul.

After tea, Bangladesh attempted to rebuild the innings with Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim putting on a 30-run stand before Mendis broke the partnership.

Mushfiqur and Liton Das then led the chase for the visitors. Rahim opted for an aggressive approach while Das was more conservative. The pair looked to be in good touch before Mendis put an end to the threatening partnership, sending Mushfiqur to the pavilion for 40.

Bangladesh finished the day with Mehidy Hasan and Liton Das at the crease, when bad light and then light rain forced early stumps.

Earlier, Sri Lanka started the day at 17/2. Taijul Islam delivered the first blow of the day, dismissing Angelo Mathews for just 12 runs.

The wicket didn't slow Sri Lanka down, with Karunaratne and De Silva opting for an aggressive approach, putting on a 73-run stand to add to the overnight lead of 259. Karunaratne raised his third consecutive half-century in the series with a boundary.

Saif struck with the breakthrough for Bangladesh as he snared the wicket Karunaratne, who looked on track to score another century. De Silva also fell to Mehidy Hasan shortly afterward, after an edge deflected of Liton'S thigh and found Najmul at the slips.

With declaration looming, Sri Lanka attempted to add quick runs, Pathum Nissnaka and Dickwella both added 24 runs each before falling to Taijul Islam and Taskin Ahmed respectively.

Taijul Islam picked up the wickets of Mendis and Jayawickrama to complete his five-wicket haul. Sri Lanka called in their batsmen in with a massive lead of 437.

The hosts now require just five wickets for a win while Bangladesh have a tough ask of scoring 266 more runs.

Jayawickrama helps Sri Lanka clinch first series win of 2021

After a dominating performance by the spinners, Sri Lanka won their first series of 2021 with 209 run victory against Bangladesh in the second Test.

Praveen Jayawickrama was the pick of the bowlers helping Sri Lanka to a 209-run win against Bangladesh in the second Test in Pallekele. His figures of 11 for 178 made him the first Sri Lankan to claim a 10-wicket haul on debut and the first bowler to take a 10-wicket haul on debut since Australia's Jason Krejza.

He is also the first bowler since Narendra Hirwani in 1988 to pick up two five-wicket hauls in his debut match.

The day began with Bangladesh resuming on 177/5, with Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan in the middle. Bangladesh's hopes of a chase suffered an early blow when Jayawickrama trapped Liton lbw in his second over of the day.

With 254 runs required to win, Mehidy Hasan continued his efforts to chase down the target but didn't receive adequate support from the other end. Dhananjaya de Silva sent Taijul Islam packing for 2 after drawing an edge, finding Dickwella behind the stumps.

Ramesh Mendis added to Bangladesh's woes when he claimed the wicket of Taskin Ahmed.

Praveen Jayawickrama dealt the final blows, bagging the wickets of Mehidy Hasan and Abu Jayed in the same over, pushing his wicket tally to 11 wickets.

Sri Lanka won the series 1-0. The first match was a high-scoring draw.

Jayawickrama was adjudged the Player of the Match while Dimuth Karunaratne was named the Player of the Series.
