Need Yasir and Nauman to build a solid partnership. Both have scored previously. It can be done

Slow progress but lets see how long Hassan and Yasir last...

SL 378
PAK 196/7 (73) CRR: 2.68
Day 3: 1st Session - Pakistan trail by 182 runs

It's possible. But three things would have to happen. First the last batsmen cut the lead to less than 100. They're capable of doing it, but unlikely. Then trigger a Sri Lanka collapse for 150-200. Leaving Pakistan 300 or less in the final innings. The way this series has gone so far there would be a certain symmetry and beauty to this scenario. The first step has to happen first for the next two steps to have a chance. So if they get out early today then it doesn't matter. The least likely of these things happening is SL collapse in the second innings, even less likely than Pakistan chasing around 300.

Yasir has faced over 80 deliveries, there's no demon's in the pitch. Pakistan still have a chance to save this test if the batters don't throw it away

Another tame dismissal.

No need for that shot by Hassan.

what is a obession to play rizwan at no 4? He is not number 4 batsmen
Better agha and fawad moved up the slot. Agha at one down and babar who is pakistan premium batsmen should come at 4

And to play that against the best bowler Srl has was bad thinking. I don’t mind him playing his style of game and thats to play a few shots here and there but, had to atleast target to bowlers better.

He is good enough to play at 4 but only if he gives up keeping duties. As it stands, he should play 6.

Nauman playing inside the line or the ball almost 3rd time out of 11 balls. Once beaten, once dropped and then gone

Pakistan to be in this game, need to bowl out SL under 150-170 which is quite impossible considering the pitch looks good to bat on.

Sri Lankan spinners look miles apart vs the Pakistani spinners. Also the Sri Lankan captain helps them with attacking field placings unlike the giving a single on a platter Babar.

Watch Yasir spin his 4rpo web around lankans with some 2 wickets.

SL is known for quality spinning options, unlike Pakistan whose best spinner (Shahjii) is out pf form for last 5 years.

Pathetic batting tactics from Yasir. He should have tried to hit out with the wickets falling around him at the end. A completely directionless innings from a guy with some hitting ability and a test hundred.

Pakistan batted at 2.60rpo in their innings compared to SL who batted at 3.6.

Now watch SL bat confidently again in this innings.

Pakistan can't bat against spin to save their lives, Pakistani spinners can't exploit spinning conditions. What is Saqlain getting paid for exactly?

SL have good options, but they too played 2 complete rookies in this series (Theekshana, Wellalage).
It's about mindset as well. If Herath was pakistani, he would still be playing. We need to realize Yasir can't go on for ever and look towards future. That's the only way we can build a team.

Need to get rid of Nauman, Hasan, Azhar. Fawad, Yasir & Sarfraz. But most likely all will be retained.

Any one with weather forecast ?
Any chance that Day 5 or Day 4 will see massive rain which might help us get a draw.

Big defeat may bring us blessing in disguise. Draw will save these useless players to play at least 3-4 series mean a year.

Why bring on Hasan Ali? This guy is finished and not capable of taking wickets.

With a 147 run lead, SL should definitely be confident. Should make for an interesting match now, aggressive batters vs. our bowlers on a good pitch. All is not lost though as with the last defeat, what will be a safe target, will be playing in the back of Sri Lankan minds

Ali is genuinely awful now.

His career is looking over.

His test bowling avg is 24 which is not a poor record by any means. That said his bowling form has been horrible in the past few months and he doesn't deserve to be picked right now. He needs to play domestic cricket and regain confidence.

Pakistan was in a similar situation in 2006 but Mohd Asif, Abdul Razzaq bowled out Sri Lanka for 73 in the second innings

It’s not about the numbers. His movement. Pace. Line and length. They’re all gone.

I have no dislike. He’s worn green well but his best days are behind him.

He has bashed weak teams a lot. Take out minnows like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh and his bowling average is 29.62 . I wouldn't call that bad either but a more accurate reflection of his abilities as a bowler.

SSA or nothing. A few years ago it was Yasir Shah or nothing for Pakistan.
Hassan Ali did quite well early last year in tests. But after his T20 world cup breakdown, did he have any good tests at all?
We were all complaining about SSA playing too many games. I think fewer people will complain about that now.

Hasan Ali's strike rate of 47 places him top 30 in the all-time list :virat

He relies a lot on rhythm and confidence while his fitness has to back him as well. When on song he can take wickets in clusters however, when he is lacking the things mentioned then he is not someone who takes a back seat to get into the line length and owling mechanics right so in the end it doesn't look good on those occasions as has been the case in last season.

In the last test, Pakistan had conceded a lead of only around 4-5 runs so they were still able to score more than than what SL scored in the second innings. However, in the ongoing match SL have taken a big lead of 147 runs. It will be very difficult to chase whatever SL score in the second innings +147 runs from the first innings.

Impossible task unless Pakistan can trigger a collapse and bowl out SL for something like 100-120 runs.

Averages 21 vs NZ, 27 vs SA and 23 vs WI as well however, his record against Aus, Srl and Eng needs improvement.

There are 64+90+90 overs remaining in this game.

If SL don't get bowled out; then Pak will have to bat for a day and a session.

IMO, SL's game to lose.

In these conditions its more about Pak lacking quality spin options. SSA is outstanding and can give an edge on any surface however, its the spinners that you expect to deliver in Srl consistently.

When we say SSA plays too much, we never mean tests. He should play every test.
But he is played in every white ball game vs Zimbabwe, Bangladesh..you name it.

Maybe if he wasn't burnt out by playing non stop, he would've been playing this crucial game.

Our best bet from here on is to choke the flow of runs as much as possible. Keep the rr around 2-2.5 so that the match drags on and we get the best chance for a draw.

I mean going aggressive at start with the new ball was the right call but at some point, rr must be our focus.

The S/R list that's easily available through Google doesn't include Wasim Akram and it's Top 80. That makes sense when you realize how Wasim went about his bowling. Recall him once saying that if the pitch, conditions, ball or his own feeling about himself weren't up to it, he just focused on shutting down the game and bowling economically rather than looking for wickets.

SL have scored at a Minimum 3.3 rpo in this series. Difficult to keep them under 2.5 when they are already leading with 170 runs and trailing in the series so more desperate to push for a win.

Oshada, Dickwella, Mendis, Chandimal, Dhanajaya all like to play their strokes and bat at 50 SR..I would be surprised if SL is batting for whole Post Lunch session tomorrow.

They would leave atleast 4.5 sessions to go at Pakistan in the final innings.

Yes I agree completely. I've been complaining about that since he came on the scene. They play him in every dead rubber, every meaningless match, ever ODI, every T20. Has he ever taken a break before this?

Absolutely. Wasim's SR was 54 in which the home conditions he played in had a role as well. The key as you referred to was he was such a genius who knew how to go about on each surface. His economy in test cricket was just 2.59 showing that irrespective of the conditions he never let the match drift away quickly to the opposition and when he had the conditions, swing, seam or reverse he was as deadly as any pacer that has played cricket and took wickets at an average of 23.

Every day in cricket com box and expert analysis we hear, go for the wickets. However, going for the wickets doesnt mean bowling with the same style on every pitch and being hit for tons of runs when conditions dont suit that style. In essence it should mean to adapt as on certain conditions bowling just good line and length with accuracy is the only wicket taking option you have until the ball starts to reverse. Someone like Pat Cummins is perfect example of the same very philosophy who knows his wicket taking options on each surface and then bowls accordingly.

Really impressed with Naseem the last few games.

Feel he'll be better suited to sub continent conditions than SENA due to his short stature and skiddy bowling style.

No brakes on the runs they keep flowing. The current pair on the crease is very aggressive. Only option to keep striking.

For any relatively shorter bowlers in SENA Bumrah and Shami (Except England) have been the perfect examples of how to get success. Fitness to be able to bowl at good pace in different spells and accuracy is the key.

No pressure on Srl while Pak trying extra hard for wickets.

3 quick wickets here and there might be bit of panic.

Hasan Ali has regressed so much. He looked so sharp and deadly when he first came. He was still a good test bowler but now he looks ineffective in here as well.

Babar is a very poor tactician his team selction ,bowling changes& field placements leave a lot to be desired

On a pitch where opposition spinning attack takes 8-127 you let them get to 47 before introducing spin when you are already 150 behind.

Yasir strikes as I said there was no piont in giving 50 runs away spin should have been on straight away

This pitch is not a rank turner. Our tail enders batted well. Neither this pitch is going to turn square even on day 5.
Pakistan can chase 320-330 here provided Fawad & Rizwan step up their game.

getting them below 200 would be the difficult task. I believe team can chase 300 and above here in the 4th innings. However, anything over 350 is difficult on any surface due to the pressure.

Well good to see Yasir bowling well, in form and fit Yasir would be handy tackling Eng and NZ at home.

The bowlers are not helping Babar....with so many freebies on offer, it's tough to set an attacking field.

As I said a spinner should have opened with Naseem we wasted 50 runs by bowling pace.

BTW this is not a 300+ chasing pitch now

The ball to be honest is not turning square. It is not chennai 99 rank turner.

Mathew hitting sixes etc - need to totally dry up runs

How? SL is 229 ahead with 7 wickets left.

Dimuth won't bat so effectively 4 down. Couple of quick wkts and max 325-350 chase which in this confidence against this attack, Pak can manage.

No batter in Pak first inns looked uncomfortable. If 2 of top 4 get in and make it large, then set for another big chase
