West Indies should win all 3 series if they field full teams.

Great opportunity for them to improve their recent ODI record.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua —Cricket West Indies (CWI) today confirmed the all-format International tour between West Indies and Sri Lanka starting in March, signalling the return of international cricket to the Caribbean. The two teams will play three (3) T20Is, three (3) One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and two (2) Test matches in a bio-secure environment in Antigua from Wednesday, March 3 to Friday, April 2.

The T20I Series will create history as the first official International matches to be played by the West Indies Men’s team at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) and the first West Indies Men's T20Is to be played in Antigua since 2013. As reigning ICC T20 World Cup champions, West Indies will use these matches as important preparation for the defence of their T20 World Cup title which is scheduled to be held in India later this year.

The CG Insurance ODI Series will played at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium on March 10, 12 and 14 — with the third being a day/night encounter. The CG Insurance ODIs form part of the ICC Super League and these three matches provide the opportunity for West Indies to secure their first points as the team tries to qualify automatically for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.

The two Test matches will be played at the same venue with the first match starting on Sunday, March 21 and the second starting March 29, providing the West Indies with another opportunity to win points and climb the ICC World Test Championship table following the recent fantastic series win in Bangladesh.

The last International West Indies Men’s Home Series featured Ireland in January last year. Since then West Indies men have made three overseas tours to England, New Zealand and Bangladesh as part of the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP).

As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, both teams will stay and play in bio-secure bubbles with all the matches being held in Antigua to accommodate a later arrival date by Sri Lanka. Fans will not be able to attend matches, but will be able to follow on TV, radio and through CWI’s digital channels.

CWI President Ricky Skerritt stated: “We are pleased to be able to finally confirm this tour. A number of COVID-19 related logistic hurdles have now been overcome and I want to thank Sri Lankan Cricket President, Shammi Silva and his team, for their co-operation in honouring their obligation to tour under the ICC FTP Agreement. We are also extremely grateful for the support we received from the Governments of Antigua & Barbuda, and St. Lucia in planning this tour. But it is regrettable that we are unable to include St. Lucia as part of this home series as we had originally hoped to due to the delay in Sri Lanka arriving and the need for the tour to end before the start of the Indian Premier League.”

CWI has been working closely with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Sport in Antigua & Barbuda to orchestrate all the logistics and agree the safety and medical protocols for the tour. All players, support staff and match officials will be kept in a bio-secure environment, with regular COVID-19 PCR testing taking place with assistance from the local Ministry of Health and CARPHA.

CWI CEO Johnny Grave, commented: “We are delighted to be able to re-start international cricket in the West Indies, with the announcement of the tour by Sri Lanka. We have a full schedule featuring all three formats, which is sure to attract lots of attention from our fans, especially following on from the terrific Test Series win in Bangladesh. A lot of detailed planning has gone into the hosting of this tour and we are confident it will be a success.”

If West Indies play their full strength team, they should winnthe T20s. I would expect them to win the ODIs as Sri Lanka are a pathetic ODI team.

In tests, West Indies will be the favourites. But the result of the series will probably be dependent on the pitches produced. I am looking forward to the test series as I don't think there is a lot to choose between the 2 sides .

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment Dasun Shanaka as Sri Lanka’s T20I captain for the Tour of West Indies.

He was appointed by the National Selectors.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform that Dasun Shanaka, who was named in the ‘White Ball Squad’ to tour West Indies, did not travel along
with the Team due to an issue related to securing his Visa.

Shanaka confronted this issue pursuant to the loss of his passport, which had a valid visa for the USA stamped on it.

Sri Lanka Cricket is working closely with the relevant authorities to get the visa issue of Shanaka sorted, quickly as possible.

He is expected to join the team once the issue is resolved.

West Indies should win all 3 series if they field full teams.

Great opportunity for them to improve their recent ODI record.
West Indies haven't won a Test series against Sri Lanka since 2003, thats the one series I am looking forward to. Sri Lanka will win the ODI and the T20 series though.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today named the West Indies squads for the CG Insurance T20 International Series and CG Insurance One-Day International Series against Sri Lanka at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) and Sir Vivian Richards Stadium (SVRS).

Chris Gayle the most prolific batsman in T20 history, and experienced fast bowler Fidel Edwards, have been named in the T20I squad marking their return to the international stage, while off-spinner Kevin Sinclair earns his first West Indies selection and left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein gets his first T20I call-up.

The T20I matches will be played under floodlights on March 3, 5 and 7 starting at 6pm Eastern Caribbean Time (5pm Jamaica Time). This T20I Series will create history as the first full international matches to be played by the official West Indies Men’s team at the CCG. The matches will also be the first West Indies T20Is to be played in Antigua since 2013. West Indies will use these matches to prepare to defend their ICC T20 World Cup title scheduled to be played in India later this year.

The CG Insurance ODI Series will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on March 10, 12 and 14 with the final match scheduled to be a day/night encounter. The series forms part of the ICC ODI Super League and these three matches provide the opportunity for West Indies to secure their first points as the team tries to qualify automatically for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India.

Speaking on the squads, CWI Lead Selector Roger Harper said: “As we build towards the defence of the T20 World Cup, the opportunity is being taken to determine our best team and squad as we go forward. Chris Gayle has performed very well in recent tournaments and the selection panel thinks that he can still add great value to our team. Fidel Edwards has been selected to give the bowling the potent firepower needed.”

Harper added: “Jason Holder has shown his all-round value in this format in recent times and after missing a few series he will add depth and experience to the squad. Akeal Hosein performed very well in Bangladesh [ODI Series] and had excellent stats in the CPL so this is an opportunity to see how he equips himself in this format. Kevin Sinclair grabbed our attention in the Super50 Cup back in 2019 and has been consistently economical in the last CPL and the current CG Insurance Super50. He will provide an off-spinning option for the team.”

All-rounder Andre Russell is still recovering from contracting COVID-19 earlier this month, and despite testing negative over a week ago was ruled out of the T20Is by the CWI Medical Panel while he completes his “return to play” protocols.

Fast bowlers Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas, along with batsman Shimron Hetmyer, and all-rounder Roston Chase all failed to reach the minimum fitness standard in time for selection consideration. They will all remain in Antigua after the CGI Insurance Super50 Cup to work on their fitness and conditioning.

T20I SQUAD: Kieron Pollard (captain), Nicholas Pooran (vice-captain), Fabien Allen, Dwayne Bravo, Fidel Edwards, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Evin Lewis, Obed McCoy, Rovman Powell, Lendl Simmons, Kevin Sinclair.

ODI SQUAD: Kieron Pollard (captain), Shai Hope (vice-captain), Fabian Allen, Darren Bravo, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Evin Lewis, Kyle Mayers, Jason Mohammed, Nicholas Pooran, Romario Shepherd, Kevin Sinclair.

Fidel Edwards back at the age of 39!

Interesting to see Shai Hope as vice captain. Pollard is 32, so looks like Pooran and Hope are the contenders to take over after him in the LO formats.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Dasun Shanaka will travel to West Indies on Sunday, 07th March 2021.

He will travel via France and is expected to join the National Team during the ODI segment of the tour.

Shanaka did not travel with the team due to a visa issue he confronted, pursuant to the loss of his previous passport, which had a valid visa for the USA stamped on it.

No batsman seems to take any responsibility for Sri Lanka. You need someone one to say right, I'm gonna stay at one end come what may.

Meanwhile the seamers looked listless, offered no threat with the new ball whatsoever.

Need a big improvement tonight.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Angelo Mathews, who is currently touring the West Indies with the National Cricket Team, will return home.

The purpose of his return is to attend to a family matter.

Mathews will depart West Indies today.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today announced the West Indies squad for the first of the two-match Test series at home against Sri Lanka. The Test squad features several players who recently participated in the 2-0 victorious Test series in Bangladesh.

Two senior players who did not play in the Bangladesh series, all-rounder Jason Holder and left-handed batsman Darren Bravo, have returned to the Test squad which will be led by Kraigg Brathwaite. The first Test will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium from March 21-25. The Selection Panel also named the squad for the CWI President’s XI to face Sri Lanka in a two-day warm-up match at Coolidge Cricket Ground on March 17-18.

Speaking on the squad, Lead Selector Roger Harper said: “It is good to be able to put together a Test squad with a number of players coming off very good performances in their last series in Bangladesh. Very encouraging. It is a fantastic opportunity to build on the good work that was done in Bangladesh. It is very important to continue the process of working hard, playing with great passion, playing with determination and a great desire to succeed. Doing that consistently will bring us the right results.”

Harper added: “A number of players seized the opportunity that the tour of Bangladesh presented and booked a place for themselves in the Test team for this series. This now means that there is keen competition for places which should drive better individual performances and that of the team. I also think that these players are looking forward to displaying their skills on home soil.”

New batsmen hailed as West Indies shows batting resilience

Displays of batting resistance and resilience in its recent series have come as a boost to the West Indies team, said captain Kraigg Brathwaite as he hailed the contribution from two new Test caps.

Kyle Mayers scored an unbeaten 210 on debut when the West Indies chased down the fifth highest target in Test cricket as it scored 395 for 7 to beat Bangladesh in Chattogram last month and Nkrumah Bonner struck his maiden Test 100 this week to ensure a draw in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Antigua.

“It shows that the guys have a lot of fight. Coming from Bangladesh, many times we batted over 90 overs,” Brathwaite told a news conference on Friday.

“We batted close to 90 overs again against Sri Lanka and that’s a positive and I think those guys are leading the way – Bonner and Kyle Mayers. They have only played in three Tests but they are setting the standard high and it’s for all the batsmen to follow – and the team.

“I think these are positive steps for West Indies cricket and once our attitude is right, the sky is the limit.”

Jamaican Bonner has emerged as a late bloomer, making his Test debut aged 32. He was a replacement after a spate of withdrawals before the tour of Bangladesh and has grabbed his chance.

Mayers, 28 from Barbados, became only the sixth player in Test history to record a double century on debut and followed that with a half-century against Sri Lanka when he and Bonner held out on the last day of the first Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

The second Test starts on Monday at the same venue.

“It’s for us to come out again with the same attitude and we just have to keep growing,” Brathwaite said. “We won’t always get wins but I’m happy with the fight this team has.”

West Indies definitely dodged a bullet. They could've been 0-1 down.

I think West Indies should win the 2nd game and win the series 1-0.

It will depend on the pitch again. If it dies after day 3, then it'll be really hard to take 20 wickets.
