WINDIES TO FACE SRI LANKA IN THREE TESTS NEXT JUNE

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies announced today the schedule for the International Home Series between Windies and Sri Lanka next year.

Windies will face the Sri Lankans next June in three Tests in Trinidad, Barbados and St. Lucia.

Sri Lanka have previously played Tests at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground (formerly Beausejour Cricket Ground) in St. Lucia – but this will be the first time they will play a Test at the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados.

This will be the Sri Lankans’ fourth official Tour of the Caribbean, where they have won one, lost three and drawn two of the six Tests they have played.

SCHEDULE OF MATCHES

Wed, May 30 to Fri, Jun 1 Tour Match – Brian Lara Cricket Ground, Trinidad

Wed, Jun 6 to Sun, Jun 10 1st Test – Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad

Thu, Jun 14 to Mon, Jun 18 2nd Test – Kensington Oval, Barbados

Sat, Jun 23 to Wed, Jun 27 3rd Test – Darren Sammy Cricket Ground, St. Lucia

I can't think of two more boring and lackadaisical teams.

Should be a competitive series. Both teams have some talented players which need to find consistency. This series may not be interesting for some, but I am looking forward to it.

Yes I agree. West Indies have potential in tests, they just need to be more consistent. They have proven they can bat well like they did in that famous 2nd test match against England but they just don't play that good often enough. Sri Lanka also beat Pakistan 2-0 in UAE which is a hard thing to do and dominated the first few days of the first Test in India as well.

So Sri Lanka are finally visiting West Indies after 10 long years. 😮 Must be searching for their first series win in WI.

West Indies need to be winning these sorts of home series if they're truly "turning a corner" in Test cricket.

Herath will extend his career by 2 more years after this series

When was the last time SL toured there? In fact, when did these 2 sides last play a Test against each other?

Sri Lanka tour of West Indies 2018

Sri Lanka will play the West Indies in a three-match Test series in June, with the Kensington Oval in Barbados set to host the first day/night Test in the Caribbean on 23 June.

The Kensington Oval in Barbados will host the first day/night Test match in the Caribbean in June, when the West Indies play host to Sri Lanka in a three-match Test series.

There have been eight day/night Test matches since the inaugural match between Australia and New Zealand at Adelaide in November 2015. Although the West Indies have played in – and lost – two day/night Tests, none have ever been hosted in the Caribbean.

That will change on 23 June when the West Indies will welcome Sri Lanka to the Kensington Oval for the final match of their Test series.

Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed they will play the hosts at Queen's Park Oval, Trinidad and Tobago, on 6 June and at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in the second Test on 14 June before the series finale in Barbados.

As well as making history with the first day/night Test in the region, the series will also mark Sri Lanka's first tour of the Caribbean in 10 years.

The previous two-match Test tour ended in a 1-1 draw, with Sri Lanka claiming their maiden Test win in the West Indies with a 121-run victory in Guyana in March 2008 before the West Indies levelled things with a six-wicket win in Trinidad and Tobago.

While the West Indies have had no success in day/night cricket so far, losing to Pakistan in Dubai in October 2016 and England in Birmingham in August 2017, Sri Lanka won their only Test in this format, beating Pakistan in Dubai in October 2017 to secure a series win.

Sri Lanka are ranked the sixth-best side in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's Test Team Rankings, while the West Indies are eighth.

Colombo - Sri Lanka's injured opener Dimuth Karunaratne was left out of a 17-man squad for the three-match Test series against the West Indies, the cricket board said on Friday.

Angelo Mathews and Suranga Lakmal were included subject to fitness, the Sri Lankan board said.

Sri Lanka will begin the tour on May 30 with a three-day warm-up match, and the first Test starts on June 6 in Trinidad.

Karunaratne, 30, fractured a finger while batting in the nets earlier this month as he prepared for a limited-overs domestic tournament.

The left-hander has played in 49 Tests and scored 3186 runs.

Colombo: Sri Lanka's former skipper Angelo Mathews and medium pacer Suranga Lakmal have been declared fit for the three-match Test series against the West Indies, the cricket board said Thursday.

The 30-year-old all-rounder and Lakmal were doubtful after a spate of injuries. They were, however, included in a 17-man squad for the tournament which begins on May 30 with a three-day warm-up match.

A fitness test was carried out this week and the duo has been given the clearance to go ahead with the tour," Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.

Sri Lanka will miss opener Dimuth Karunaratne who fractured a finger while batting in the nets earlier this month as he prepared for a limited-overs domestic tournament.

Windies aim to improve ranking with busy summer schedule

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Top-order, left-handed batsman, Devon Smith returns to the WINDIES squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Wicket-keeper, Jamar Hamilton has also earned selection in the elite squad for the first time becoming the second Anguillan, behind Omari Banks to do so.

The confirmed squad is:

Jason Holder – captain
Devendra Bishoo
Kraigg Brathwaite
Roston Chase
Miguel Cummins
Shane Dowrich
Shannon Gabriel
Jamar Hamilton
Shimron Hetmyer
Shai Hope
Kieran Powell
Kemar Roach
Devon Smith

Commenting on the make-up of this squad, Chairman of Selectors, Courtney Browne said, “we have retained the core of the Test team as they remain competitive even after a tough series in New Zealand. Devon Smith had an outstanding year and players who excel to that degree should be recognized. We are trying to improve our top order batting performances.”

Browne also noted that “Jamar Hamilton comes into the squad after consecutive strong performances over the last three years and showed even better quality in the A Team series against the England Lions. We wish the team every success.”

The 13-man squad will start their busy summer schedule against Sri Lanka in the first Test which bowls off on Wednesday, June 6 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and Tobago.

The complete summer schedule includes 5 Tests, 3 ODIs and 3 T20s and CEO, Johnny Grave thinks these two international homes series “will provide an opportunity for the team to improve its rankings in the Tests and One-Day formats.”

The Sri Lanka series will also include the historic day/night Test, scheduled for the Kensington Oval, Barbados from June 23 – 27. The period will also mark the 90th anniversary since the West Indies became a Test-playing nation.

It is so sad to see a former 'giant' perform like this.
And what more sad is to see, is the fact that their world class players don't want to play for their country.

Sri Lankan cricketer Dhananjaya de Silva withdrew from the upcoming tour to West Indies on Thursday after his father was shot dead by unidentified gunmen. According to the police, the shooting took place on the evening of the team’s departure to the West Indies for a three-match Test series.

According to a report by news agency AFP, the police added that Silva’s father Ranjan, who works as a local politician, was gunned down in Ratmalana, a suburb in the capital city of Colombo, around midnight yesterday, police said. The police added that they are carrying out an investigation into the incident, but so far no arrests have been made.

Speaking about Dhanjaya’s involvement in the series, the cricket officials said that the 26-year-old has withdrawn from the tour. “We are extremely shocked, perturbed and saddened by the great loss suffered by Dhananjaya and his family,” Sri Lankan Cricket Board president Thilanga Sumathipala said in a statement. “Sri Lanka Cricket will take every measure to support Dhananjaya at this time of sorrow and grief for him and his family while giving him time to overcome the great pain and suffering caused by this tragedy.”

A board official further told news agency AFP that there will be no replacement for Dhanjaya de Silva in the squad. “There will be no replacement for Dhananjaya. Instead of a 17-member squad, we will now have 16,” he said.

The side will also be missing the opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne who fractured a finger while batting in the nets earlier this month while preparing for a limited-overs domestic tournament.

Sri Lanka are scheduled to play a three-Test match series against West Indies starting from June 6. The two teams will also be playing a 3-day warm-up game from June 1.

The right-arm batsman has played 13 Tests for Sri Lanka. He made a return to the side during the third Test against India at Feroz Shaha Kotla in New Delhi in December 2017, in which he scored an unbeaten ton to save the visitors from an innings defeat. De Silva also scored a century in February against Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews will miss the rest of their West Indies tour after he left for home due to personal reasons, while fast bowler Lahiru Gamage was ruled out with an injury.

The duo's return is a major setback for Sri Lanka, who suffered a crushing 226-run defeat in the first of the three-test series at Port of Spain on Sunday.

Former captain Mathews, who scored 11 and 31 in the opening test, was determined to make a mark after missing five months of action with hamstring and calf injuries.

Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed Gamage fractured his finger while batting in the first test.

Batsman Dasun Shanaka, who last played a test against Bangladesh in February, and all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka will be flown out as replacements later on Wednesday evening.

It is unlikely that the duo will be available for the start of the second test at St Lucia on Thursday, given the lengthy flights.

The visitors, though, have Dhananjaya de Silva and Mahela Udawatte as cover for Mathews, and extra quicks Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando to replace Gamage.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados- Keemo Paul will replace Shimron Hetmyer in the WINDIES Test Squad for the remainder of the Test Series against Sri Lanka.

Hetmyer will return home to Guyana to recover from a recent illness. While there, he will continue his preparations to return for the 2-day practice match against Bangladesh in Antigua.

WINDIES Head Coach Stuart Law said, “ Hetty is a big part of our future and now we want him to recover fully from his illness, so he can be at his best for the warm-up match versus Bangladesh.”

The third Test against Sri Lanka is the first Day/Night Test to be played in the Caribbean.

Sri Lanka recalls leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay from West Indies tour

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka on Saturday recalled leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay from the West Indies tour over "conduct" that violated contractual obligations, Sri Lanka's cricket board said.

The 28-year-old is an uncapped Test player, but he was included in a 17-member squad for the three-Test series against the West Indies. The third and final Test begins in Saturday in Barbados.

"Vandersay, who toured West Indies with the national team is sent back to Sri Lanka owing to his conduct, which amounts to breach of contractual obligations," the board said in a brief statement, without giving further details.

The recall adds to the woes of Sri Lanka, who are already facing the final match without regular captain Dinesh Chandimal.

He was slapped with a one-match ban over ball tampering charges during the 2nd Test that ended in a draw.

Suranga Lakmal was appointed captain in Chandimal's absence. The West Indies are 1-0 up in the series.

Chandimal was given the ban after being spotted by television cameras during the second Test applying saliva to the ball, apparently with a sweet in his mouth.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday dismissed Chandimal's appeal. A fine of 100 per cent of his match fee and two suspension points were also upheld.

Chandimal, coach Chandika Hathurusingha and manager Asanka Gurusinha also face possible disciplinary action after refusing to take to the field for two hours after the incident.

The three admitted on Friday "conduct... contrary to the spirit of the game" and will face a preliminary ICC hearing on July 10.

Hathurusingha and Gurusinha are free to perform their duties until then, but Chandimal will have to sit out the 3rd Test.

Chandimal's ban came after a string of defeats -- including a Test and one-day whitewash to India -- and corruption allegations.
