What's new

Sri Lanka vs India | 1st ODI | Dambulla | 18/08/2008

We are probably missing Rahul 'THE BEAST' Dravid. Mendis is lucky he ain't playing or else he would have blown him away :P

Have you seen that shot of his which he smacked Anderson out of the park ? he looked like he was going to loft him straight over his head, then he did this twist of his arms but still effective went for 6 but you never expect a shot like that with the impression he initially gave...

Yes, he has a great eye and he probably has strongest arms among all cricketers (barring The Beast). He can surely play unbelievable (albeit ugly) strokes out of the park.

As we speak, he has cut a Mendis delivery straight into first slip's bellybutton.

Good one, Bablu :)))

Pathan gone! Murali strikes!
87-7

Pak definitely would have scored at least 180.

Irfan pathan was looking very amused after being given out. I wonder why because it was plumb.

Edit: Well it may have touched the bat first. My apologies Pathan sahb.

zaheer khan in...again i would like to have to seen him bat up the order :)))

If this batting display is indicative of how Indian batsmen are going to play the whole series; the Tends, Dravids, Laxmans, and Gangulys have nothing to fear for another three years.

True, Grandapa brigade ki khatiya khadi hone se bach gaye.

5th maiden in a row. Must be some kind of a record in the subcontinental phattas.

At least they lasted for a couple of sessions against this attack ... This is pathetic !!!

mendis now averages 9.77 in 9 matches and taking 22 wickets.
I believe Mendis, if he continues to play for even 10 more years, will be considered an all time great bowler.

I'd like to ask Akram whether he still thinks India is the best ODI team in the world.
Akram was all praise for Irfan Pathan once (even allegedly "coached" him) and in some months, he wasn't even in the team. He then said India was the best ODI team in the world, and we are seeing this. He also said (rightly) that Sehwag and Gambhir were the best openers in the world. I wonder what will happen to them.

And I never believed in jinxing.

they should play him like a fast leg spinner
I really have very high expectations from Mendis. Doesn't it look like he is the next big thing after Warne and Murali ? I believe he have the ability to surpass both of them in the long run. The guy is from another planet.

At one point even I had a gut feeling that India does have a chance to become the best ODI team in the world. But as I've said before, this series reminded everyone that 'Inconsistency thy name Indian team'.

India now needs the spinner from the movie Lagaan 'KACHRA' to save themselves.

These sub 150 scores are very dangerous sometimes. It will be better for Lanka if they let India score around 160.

BCCI should now flex their muscles to ban Mendis permanently from International cricket. There must be something wrong in his bowling action since the best players of spin aren't able to play him. Menis hatao, cricket bachao .......... :D

:))) :))) :)))

I have a suggestion. They should object to the fact that before releasing the delivery he points with his left index finger (just like umpires raise their fingers to give a batsman out) on the grounds that it has a negative effect on batsman and umpire.

I am sure that if he is forced to change his action, he won't be effective at all.

India 100 in 34. To put things in perspective, in the final of the WC92 against England, Pakistan got to their 100 in 34 overs.

Yeppie .. we have done it .. its a century .. all the Indian players are waving their bats .. and the Sri Lankan bowlers are frustrated.. there are crackers bursting all over .. all the Indian players are hugging each other for the century

This si whats hurting me the most, the tail wagging surely our top order can take a leaf out of their book..

Surely Zaheer has put the top order batters to shame on more than one occasion in this series.

Edit--And he does a Yuvi.

Don't believe anything he says regarding of India. He is in ESPN. What would you expect if not praise?

Attacking Mendis might be the only solution i can think of. Remember, Misbah has played Mendis very well by attacking.

:)) Jokes aside, I have always loved the guy .... maybe just as much as some of the Indian players and maybe even more.

You have a point there.

I remember a match in Sharjah back in '85 when India were dismissed for 120. Pakistan still lost the match when they were all out for 85.

Man, Zaheer have survived the maximum balls so far amongst all Indian batsman in this match .... 38 !!

I'll tell you what--Sachin must be thanking his stars for getting injured at such an opportune time. He certainly wouldn't have fancied facing Mendis and Murali again any time soon.

Kabaara, aur kya!
Younis Khan is one man I have faith on. The guy is pure class. I believe he'll be able to tackle Mendis better than the rest of his team mates.

Yes, Younis and maybe to some extent Misbah (because of his positive intent) but again, maybe.

End of over 45 (14 runs) - India 140/9
MM Patel 12* (10b 1x4 1x6) M Muralitharan 10-2-37-3
PP Ojha 14* (27b 1x4) BAW Mendis 8-4-15-2

44.6 Muralitharan to Patel, SIX, Munaf clears his front foot out of the way and slogs Murali high over deep midwicket, he's connected well enough for the ball to clear the boundary
44.5 Muralitharan to Ojha, 1 run, pushed on the off side for a single
44.4 Muralitharan to Ojha, 2 runs
44.3 Muralitharan to Ojha, FOUR, Ojha slog-sweeps Murali with one hand and lofts the ball into the gap at deep square leg, Mendis dives on the boundary but can't prevent it
44.2 Muralitharan to Ojha, no run
44.2 Muralitharan to Ojha, 1 wide, Ojha tries to work the ball off his pads but misses
44.1 Muralitharan to Ojha, no run, Ojha pushes forward in defence but gets beaten

Mendis has made murali look like an ordinary bowler compare to him since time he entered international arena..

I hope you don't start with your legendary "dont ask me how I know but believe me that I definitely know that Sharjah matches were all fixed" rant. :D

Have to say that Fernando is the undisputed king of boring commentry. Will take some beating.

What a boring match. Even Musharraf's address was more interesting than this one, and that is saying something.

I wish ALL Asian Commentators would follow Musharaf and resign!

क्या इस मैच से ज्यादा भी कुछ और बोरींग हो सकता हैं ??

I see the 'all white' IPL cheerleader trend has now landed in Sri Lanka.

Shame about that.

Anything to make the native darkies appear even less worthy than they are....

Translation please (if its not a series of expletives aimed at the fantastic performers of today :mush ).

Naa, I can't. But I believed that Pakistani people are able to read Hindi. Is it a misconception ?

Yes, after the separation of Bangladesh, nobody can read sanskrit type writing (I think you call it Dev-nagri) in Pakistan anymore.

Wow, just joined in. What the heck happened here?????

India only 146... i double checked if this wasnt a rain-reduced match, but it seems they had the full 50 overs.....

Nope mate, i dont know even one Pakistani who can read Hindi, and most of them actually cant...

Its a bit different with Urdu in India, where it seems that quite some people (specially Muslim) can read Urdu.

Sharma to Kapugedera, 1 run, Sri Lanka have won by eight wickets, Kapugedera scores the winning runs with a sweep to long leg, the game was a no-contest from the second ball of the match with which Vaas bowled Gambhir

Wow, ridiculous really....
