Interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday offered to quit, asking the Congress Working Committee to initiate the process for selecting a new party chief, sources said.

In her opening remarks at the meeting, called in the wake of a section of leaders seeking a "full time and visible" Congress president, Sonia Gandhi made the offer to quit saying she had given a detailed reply on the issue to AICC general secretary K C Venugopal.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who spoke after Gandhi, urged her to continue, so did former Defence Minister A K Antony, with both the veterans criticising the letter by some party leaders, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Mukul Wasnik, who are a part of the CWC, the party's highest decision-making body.

Sources said Sonia Gandhi referred to Azad and others twice during her brief address and the issues raised by them.

When asked to put forth his view, Azad read out the letter and asked which part of it is an attack on Sonia or Rahul Gandhi. Azad said he can never undermine Sonia or contribution of Nehru-Gandhi family to the Congress. Says Sonia's hard work in building the party, bringing it to power in 2004/2009 is a matter of record, doesn't need validation from anyone.

"Changes demanded are purely organizational and in keeping with spirit of CWC resolution passed when Sonia took over as interim chief which had called for extensive overhaul," Azad said.

Sources said that Rahul Gandhi in his speech also questioned the timing of the letter, which was sent to Sonia Gandhi when she was in Gangaram hospital and under medication.

"It is the CWC and not the media where we put out our thoughts and discuss," he is learnt to have said at the meeting, the sources said.

The crucial meeting of the Working Committee started here amid divisions in the party over the leadership issue.

The party is divided on the leadership matter with a section demanding collective leadership and another reposing faith in the Gandhi family.

Around 20 party leaders had written to Sonia Gandhi demanding a full-time, visible president and overhauling of the organisational structure including elections to the CWC and reconstitution of the Parliamentary board.

There has been a huge outpouring of support for the Gandhis with party leaders from across the country urging her to continue as party chief or appoint Rahul Gandhi to the post.

Absolutely farcical proceedings going on within the Grand Old Party. They'll never adapt.

Nice, so if she does resign, she can pull all the chains from behind undercover lol nice try :)).

Only when the 4 idiots below are dead, buried and lying 6 feet underground then Congress can think of coming back into power:

Sonya (My Ammayi) Gandhi
Rahul (Puppu) Gandhi
Priyanka (The humonoid) Gandhi

&

Robert (Fraud) Vadra

When guys like Lal Bahadur Shastri and others were PM was Nehru Gandhi family still pulling the strings?

lol BJP voters ?, anyone with common sense would see through this :)).... Ammayi Sonya is doing a Monmohan singh part 2.... Typical use a Shikandi in front of Arjuna so he can go for the kill strategy........

I repeat till all the 4 imbeciles I mention in my earlier post are dead and buried, no chance for Khan Gress to come back... Its over...

Who would be the favorite to replace her?

I doubt she is going anywhere. Her replacement (if) will be some puppet. Anyway she continues as interim President, for 6 more months. Let us see how it goes, whether the dissent dies out or not.

Why cant their be some non Gandhi family member as head of Congress? Seems insulting to the rest of the members of the party. Congress is a well established party, so its not like they have to worry about their party splintering into many different factions.

When guys like Lal Bahadur Shastri and others were PM was Nehru Gandhi family still pulling the strings?

During Shastri's time it was Tamil Nadu's Kamaraj who was kingmaker, troubleshooter and driving force. Great man, he could have been PM twice but opted out since he wasn't educated (4th standard) and didn't know English, Hindi. So he was content to stay in Tamil Nadu, one of the greatest political leaders in Indian history. He introduced free and compulsory education in the state and free mid-day meal scheme to attract poor children to schools. One of the main reasons why TN has better HDI numbers today. He also gave us 2 PMs, Shastri and Indira Gandhi. Yeah he was the guy who installed Indira Gandhi as PM, choosing her over Morarji Desai.

The other time Nehru family wasn't pulling the strings was post Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. Especially during Narsimha Rao's PM tenure, it was Rao who launched Manmohan Singh's political career, Congress' last PM probably for a very long time.

Inner party democracy is dead, outsiders can't rise beyond a point. It is the family and a powerful coterie (of mainly good for nothing oldies who have benefitted a lot courtesy the family since Indira Gandhi's time) who control everything including party funds. Great fall, there is a reason they have become so weak now. They are responsible for their fall, already many factions have separated in almost every state. TMC is a splinter group, now governing Bengal, YSR Congress governs Andhra Pradesh, Sharad Pawar and Ajit Jogi are other tall leaders who separated, Pawar became Maharashtra CM many times, even now he indirectly governs. Now so many young Congress leaders want to go separate ways. Maybe this Congress has to get annihilated before a new Congress rises. Unless the first family goes I don't see any recovery.

Everytime someone dissents it doesn't end well for him/her. No future in the party, see what happened to Sitaram Kesri, the last non-Gandhi President of Congress.

How Sitaram Kesri’s humiliation drew me away from the Congress forever

Gandhi family held presidency from 1978-1991, Indira and Rajiv had dual roles of PM and Congress President. BJP has never done anything close to that, in fact since 1998 BJP has had 11 separate Presidents while Congress has just had Sonia and Rahul as party chiefs.

This was all drama to begin with. Internal democracy has long been dead in Congress. Maa-Beta are the ones fully responsible to bring Congress to this sorry state.

No wonder the bigots have enjoyed the kind of run they have. There is no opposition worthy enough to challenge their outright bigotry.

Manish Tewari and Shashi Tharoor should break away and form a separate Congress Rebelz party and I predict they will get huge support from the middle class. Tharoor is popular and so is Tewari to an extent .. and they won't have the Gandhi label affiliated with them, that has been so toxic lately.

Its time Congress is disbanded. And you have no idea how much it pains me to say it. This is coming from someone whose great grandfather had defeated the predecessors of Yogi Adityanath. Even I, in 2014 felt Modi was better than Pappu (cant tolerate Modi, but he was the lesser of the two evils. Dont feel that way now). But congress needs to go.

We need AAP to become a national party. Or at least become big enough to be able to lead an NDA/UPA style coalition.

I agree. Like in '69 Indira broke Congress. But the problem today is whether someone is of as powering personality as Indira was in '69.

However even after so many defections, there are still so many bright leaders left in Congress. They should take a lead and break the monopoly of these Maa-Beta-Beti.

lol even in '14, the bigot wasn't any better than Rahul. He is as worse as he is ever been.

Anybody feels Sonia Gandhi has no interest in coming back to power? Maybe she is just on cruise mode until her potential end 5-10 years from now?

In the meantime, just like in Indira's time, we might as well see the BJP splinter into two or more factions. Modi-Shah have proven that they can't win any state elections outright, and there are moderate factions within the BJP who were in the erstwhile Vajpayee Advani camp (the likes of Rajnath Singh and Gadkari) - maybe they'll be part of the split faction.

Lots of water to flow under the bridge before this comes to pass though.

Why cant their be some non Gandhi family member as head of Congress? Seems insulting to the rest of the members of the party. Congress is a well established party, so its not like they have to worry about their party splintering into many different factions.

A non-Gandhi cannot head the party because at its root Congress doesn't have an ideology nor does it have the discipline to stay together without a dictator at the head. At best what it can claim to do is to provide competent governance.

Without an ideology, the dozen different regional leaders of Congress will never accept the leadership of a non-Gandhi. They will want to be the leader themselves. Some former regional leaders like Mamata, Pawar etc. got so powerful that they didn't even accept the leadership of a Gandhi. A non-Gandhi will never be able to hold the party together.

Call it fascist, nationalist, communalist or whatever, the BJP does have an ideology. So the mass of the party members stick with the party even if a regional leader was to desert it.

People at this point identify the Congress party with the Gandhi family, and it is the dictatorship of the family that keeps it from splitting into a dozen pieces.

That is because the Gandhis have created a setup where anyone who shows even the smallest dissent to their leadership will be booted out. One only has to look at what happened with V.P.Singh in the 1980s, Sharad Pawar afterwards and Natwar Singh more recently. Even Pranab Mukherjee did it but he was too senior for them to take any adverse action against him. So they finished his political career and any further involvement with the Congress by making him President.
The one thing that all these worthies had in common was that they all had the spine to point fingers at the Unholy Family.

Ideology be damned. No Indian political party other than the Communists ever had any ideology. Even the BJP's rank and file are divided on how much the hindutva card needs to be played. They don't speak out or rebel because the party has an element of inner democracy and discipline.

The Congress is nothing but disgusting dynastic politics at its worst.

Tharoor is nothing but a congressi *******. I highly doubt he gots balls to rebel against her majesty Sonia Gandhi. Even if he does form a separate party, I doubt it would garner enough support from north India. He has done lot of goodwill damage to his credentials with Congress.

Best thing at this point is, youth of Congress should part aways and form a new progressive party. They might not win for next 2-3 federal elections, but will surely garner enough support to challenge NDA/UPA next decade(2030s). I hate it when people who supposed to be retired at 60s are actually running the country. Sad state of affairs.

0/10 for comprehension. I was obviously talking about the Congress.

Read your own message again and see if you can yourself figure out what you wrote, I don’t have more time to waste on this.

This thread points to the weakness of the Congress in terms of organisation and ideology. Such deficiencies are understandably linked to the persistence of dynastic control by the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Though I am not expert on Indian politics, it has prompted me to think of some of the deeper historical inheritances that might have conditioned - if that is not too strong a word - this outcome. Considering the colonial period and the Nehru era from 1947 to 1964, three points can perhaps be made.

First, is the nature of British rule. As the historian D.A Low argued, while Britain was determined to hold on to India and ultimately prepared to resort to force, they never went as far as the Dutch and the French in Indonesia and Vietnam respectively. Unlike the Dutch they did not banish nationalist leaders for life and unlike the French they did not murder hundreds of them. Therefore, in Indonesia and Vietnam, mass mobilisation in breadth and depth was rendered necessary in the forging of the anti-colonial struggle. In India, on the other hand, support for the independence movement was certainly required on a wide enough scale to register support in the elections, which of course occurred under a restricted franchise. The British viewed elections as an important arena in conferring legitimacy, but support need not have been much wider or deeper than this. In other words the Congress did not need to develop into a cadre-led movement, tightly organised with a clear sense of direction.

Second, is the very success the Congress achieved amongst influential sections of the population in projecting itself as the “alternative Raj,” particularly during the 1930s. Whilst such support strengthened the anti-colonial movement, it weakened the ideological impulse as it became an “umbrella” party home to varied and conflicting interests. As Congress prestige rose, many of the aspirant politicians viewed it primarily as a vehicle to enhance personal careers.

Third, Nehru was unwilling after independence to transform the Congress from a general movement representing unity to a tightly knit party pursuing a focussed programme of action. I would suggest perhaps two reasons for this. There was maybe an emotional attachment, carried over from the anti-colonial movement, to the idea that the Congress embodied Indian unity. “The Congress is the Country,” so said Nehru in 1953, “and the country is the Congress.” Secondly, the Congress provided stability. It had built up considerable political experience and it possessed a network integrating the centre to the states. Then, there is the more general point that many movements around the world espouse a revolutionary rhetoric only to take a rightward and conservative turn when in government. This is because they fear social upheaval. There is a tension that exists between the inclination for stability and the desire for radical social transformation. The former often wins.

All of this in some ways influenced organisation and ideology which were further eroded by the grip of dynastic control that came later. This is not to say that the situation today is an inevitable outcome of the past. Parties can and do change. But the ‘grooves’ left by historical inheritances can make change more difficult.

I am baffled that anyone living in a democracy can still support such kind of party.

Now the Congress have gone ahead and clipped the wings of those letter writers, days after Sonia claimed she held no grudges.

Ghulam Nabi Azad is one of them.

Let them die already, so someone in the new avatar can act as a reasonably opposition worth their salt.

I am baffled that anyone living in a democracy can still support such kind of party.

Only a clueless bhakt will believe that having different faces as party prez has anything to do with inner party democracy.

Nagpur's word is the only thing which matters.

Now the Congress have gone ahead and clipped the wings of those letter writers, days after Sonia claimed she held no grudges.

Ghulam Nabi Azad is one of them.

Let them die already, so someone in the new avatar can act as a reasonably opposition worth their salt.
Pathetic from Congress. This was one chance for Sonia to reform Congress and she bungled it spectacularly.

The bad guys don't have inner democracy, fair enough. But why do the good guys also don't have it. Must be a new low for psuedo liberals to find flaw with the bad guys, instead of fixing their own flaws.

Mumbai: Wading into the ongoing leadership debate in the Congress party, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday said that stopping party leader Rahul Gandhi from taking over leadership of the party will lead to "extinction" of the grand old party.

Raut in his weekly column in the Sena mouthpiece Saamana also said Congress lacks a leader who can stand up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with full might.

Commenting on the letter of dissent sent to Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi by 23 party leaders, the Shiv Sena wondered who is stopping them from being active.

"Activeness to stop Rahul Gandhi will be instrumental in destroying the party and lead to its extinction," Raut said.

Raut whose party is part of the coalition government in Maharashtra along with Congress and NCP, said that a non-Gandhi as Congress president is a good idea, but no one in those 23 has that capability.

"Congress veteran late VN Gadgil described the Congress as an old woman who will never die. Rahul Gandhi has to decide what to do with the old lady," the Shiv Sena leader added, PTI reported.

Letter of dissent triggers flutter in Congress
Around 23 Congress leaders had written to Sonia Gandhi demanding sweeping organisational reforms, a collective leadership and an "active, full-time and visible" president.

The signatories to the letter included Azad, Kapil Sibal, Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, Anand Sharma, PJ Kurien, Renuka Chaudhary, Milind Deora and Ajay Singh.

Reacting to the letter, Sonia had said that she does not hold anything or any kind of "ill-will" against any of her colleagues irrespective of how hurtful were the remarks made by them.

The Congress chief had also said she considers everyone part of the Congress family, which may have differences, but it should remain together to fight for the cause of the people.

Earlier this week, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was one of the signatories to the letter of "dissident", has said that the party is at the "historic low" and will continue to sit in the opposition for the "next 50 years" if elections to the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and key organisational posts are not held.

"For the last many decades, we do not have elected bodies in the party. Maybe we should have pushed for it 10-15 yrs ago. Now we are losing elections after elections, and if we have to come back we need to strengthen our party by holding elections," Azad was quoted as saying by ANI.

Ghulam Nabi Azad loses general secretary post in Congress reshuffle weeks after letter row

Veteran politician Ghulam Nabi Azad Friday was removed as All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary even as he was retained in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) in a major organisational reshuffle. Azad was one of the 23 party members who wrote a letter to interim party president Sonia Gandhi last month, demanding a leadership overhaul.

Despite all the terrible things Nehru did for India, like Passing on the UN security council seat to China, Only taking half of Kashmir when the entire Kashmir was India's along with turning Kashmir into an international issue when it was an internal issue.

I am grateful for one thing:

Nehru provided a grandson named Rahul Puppu.

Rahul Puppu being in opposition will ensure PM Modi will be around for hopefully another 2 or 3 terms and by then he would have undone some of the damages which Nehru has done.

Nehru's grandson was Rajiv Gandhi.

Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned four times in a row following a fierce war or words that broke out in the lower house between treasury and opposition members over remarks made by minister of state for finance Anurag Thakur on the Nehru-Gandhi family, leading to the first adjournment of the lower house during the monsoon session of Parliament.

The house resumed at 6.00 pm after Speaker Om Birla’s appeal for ending the disruption in Parliament. He appealed to the members to maintain the dignity of the house.

“It is my responsibility to protect all the members, I would request Mr. Anurag Thakur to say a few words on the objections raised by the other members,” Birla said.

Following the speaker’s appeal Thakur expressed regret over his remarks.

“I had no intent to hurt the sentiments of anybody. If anyone is hurt then I regret it,” Thakur said.

The proceedings of the lower house were adjourned four times in a row since 4.00 pm over the uproar followed by Thakur’s remarks.

During a discussion on the Taxation and Other Laws (Relaxation and Amendment of Certain Provisions) Bill in the lower house, Thakur accused the Nehru-Gandhi family of cheating the public through creation of various funds under different names after Congress leaders, including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari criticised the PM CARES fund.

The Taxation and Other Laws (Relaxation and Amendment of Certain Provisions) Bill, seeks to provide the same tax treatment to PM CARES Fund as available to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

“Nehru ji ordered the creation of the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund in 1948, like a royal order but its registration has not been done even till today. How did it get FCRA clearance?” Thakur said.

From the high court to the Supreme Court, every court has validated the PM-CARES fund. Little children have contributed to it from their piggy banks. Nehru set up a fund that has not been registered till date. You (Congress) only made a trust for the benefit of the Gandhi family. You made Sonia Gandhi its chairman. It should be investigated,” he added.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also took a dig at the MoS calling him a “boy from Himachal”.

“Who is this boy from Himachal”… “How did Nehru come into this debate? Did we take (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi’s name?” he lashed out.

Irked by the remark, opposition members demanded an apology from the MoS. Some MPs of Congress also staged a walk out in protest against the remark. The Lok Sabha speaker adjourned the house and called for a meeting of floor leaders to resolve the disruption.

Later, defence minister Rajnath Singh praised the speaker for having resolved the differences. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary said the speaker is respected by all members of the house. “We all should keep in mind that we have come together to attend the proceedings in adverse circumstances, we are here to dispense our responsibilities. None of the members have any complaint against you; we have confidence that you as a guardian will protect all the members. We all will run the House smoothly and protect its dignity, it is the responsibility of all Members,” Chowdhary said.
