This took me by surprise.
Out of 17 years of cricket career (excluding 2008 when he didn't play a single test) , he scored century in 16 of them. This ratio is higher than pretty much every great modern test batsman.

Younis Khan had one of the best streak in modern cricketing era. Among the batsman with 10000+ runs , he is the only one with 7 continuous years with 50+ average in a calendar year. I was expecting someone like Ponting to dominate this list but thats not the case.

Poor - (avg under 30 in a year)
Average - (avg between 30 and 50 in a year)
Good - (avg over 50 in a year)

Lol and some armchair experts will have you believe he was not an ATG. Century in every Test playing nation, over 10k runs, 34 tons, one of the most consistent batsmen to ever step foot on a cricket field but nah, not an ATG lmao.

I'm pretty sure he would have scored even more runs if we played our home games in Pakistan instead of UAE. Just look at his average in Pakistan after 2006 when he really hit his peak.

Great batsman but deceiving stats, specially post 2009 when Pakistan played almost all their matches in Asia or in similar conditions (against Lanka, WI and toothless SENA attacks for the conditions).

There is a reason why he averaged 36 in 2012, 37 in 2016 and 44 in 2017. Don't have time to verify this, but I am guessing that 2012 was when Pakistan toured South Africa, 2016 should be England and Australia while 2017 too must have some scattered away tours.

He averages 50+ in both England and Australia and had a 50+ average in New Zealand as well, IIRC, before his last tour there when he was 40 years old. He averages more in South Africa than Rahul Dravid. Of course, he was a monster in Asia and destroyed all comers.

In an era when flat track bullies.

I think this sentence is incomplete.

Agreed, completely. Easily one of the greatest batsmen of all-time and I would pick him over Rahul Dravid and Kumar Sangakkara.

Top five Asian test batsmen:

1) Sachin Tendulker
2) Sunil Gavasker
3) Javed Miandad
4) Younis Khan
5) Kumar Sangakkara

I rate younis Khan very highly and have no objection if people call him ATG. But the consistency rationale is flawed because in cricket consistency can't be measured on yearly basis but only on geography basis. Most good batsmen hardly ever go out of form on domestic pitches, it's only when they tour abroad bad form kicks in, which indicates inconsistency. So how many matches in an year were played in domestic conditions vs overseas conditions will have a bearing on consistency and not just the number of matches.

His career average in Australia, England and India is 50+ (India being 70+)..

Surely he wasn't a duck outside his comfortable pitches.

He failed in SA/WI and to some extent good enough in SL or NZ.

I am replying to the topic. Younis's consistency has a lot to do with playing bulk of matches in Asia.

Exclude Zimbabwe, Younis averages 36 outside Asia in the last 10 years.

Agreed, I am only trying to explain his consistency in the last decade or so.

Overall, he is a great batsman without a doubt. But he has struggled outside Asia in the 10 years, and not leaving his comfort zone as often has helped make him look more consistent.

Every batsman, bar Tendulkar has been successful in his own comfort zone for majority of the career.

From 2007-17, he averaged 49 away.. with 60 in Australia.. and 48 in England.

Though it must be said.. his average in Australia was inflated with that 175* in an otherwise failed series..

Last 10 years (excluding Zimbabwe)-

Average in Asia : 61.22
Average outside Asia : 36.67

My point was that bullying sides in Asia has played a major role in making Younis Khan look more consistent, and that's true. Usually ATGs have more consistent stats even outside their comfort zone.

I admire Younis Khan a lot, but the hyperbole that comes with some contextless stats isn't justified.

I think you took last 10 years ending at 2018.. please take from 2007-17.

Ok, so those would be last 9 year stats.

Still, that's a long time of bullying sides in Asia while being half the batsman away.

Don't get me wrong, he was a great batsman without a doubt, but not leaving Asia during his most vulnerable years made him look more consistent. His numbers outside Asia have been poor since 2008.

His stats are inflated due to playing lots of game in UAE but he is arguably the greatest ever produced by Pak bar Miandad.

Inzamam is ahead as well due to his ODI exploits.

However, comparing Yousuf to Younis though is like comparing Bell to Cook.

In Eng/Australia he averaged 48/58 in that period.. though average in Australia was inflated with that 175* in an otherwise failed series.

I think this consistency is flawed because there are at least 3 years when he played just 2 or 3 matches for the entire year.

If he played this less, surely one cant justify consistency.

Keeping all bias aside, I'd love to have someone like him in my Test team any day of the week.

Sehwag's best phase was nearly same time as Younis Khan's.

Would probably make the top 10 Test batsman from Asia. In my opinion, Miandad was the only Pak batsman better than him.

Falls short of ATG - if you look at his % runs in and outside Asia (excluding Zim) there is a big discrepancy, also evident by YK's 5 tons in SENA bearing in mind this is coming from one of the best converters from 50 -> 100.

In fact YK was inferior to Moyo and Inzy in SENA who were also top performers against Walsh and Ambrose WI side, while YK failed albeit young and inexperienced at the time.

YK on the other hand is fitter, a better of player of spin and batting for long periods time compared to the duo, so it is no surprise that he holds a better record in Asia.

So I'm not convinced if YK is even the second best bat after Miandad, who is the only ATG bat to come from Pakistan.

While their batting average is nearly same in Asian pitches , Younis has scored almost twice as centuries.

YK was great batsman but not ATG. I find pujara very similar to YK...will have great subcontinent record but only some scattered overseas performance here n there over long career.
I will put him behind javed inzi and moyo for sure.
I have seen moyo throughout his career his class was different, much better quality than younis.
Many old timers might say zaheer abbas was also better.
So YK is among top 4/5 batsman from pak.

Lol at the people calling him an ATG.. he was a very very good batsman, but nowhere near the class of ATG.

His career average in Australia is bloated by one NO innings of 175*

He was very consistent in Asia, but here is every single inning he has played outside of Asia against non-minnows.

His average is 39 and it's mostly 3-4 big knocks making it possible, otherwise he looked very inconsistent outside Asia.

Out of 71 inning, 17 times he crossed 50. So 3 out of 4 times he failed to cross 50.

I am sure stats will look a lot better in Asia for him.

ATG no doubt, hope Pujara reaches his level in the coming 5 years. Lots of similarities between the 2 batsmen.

While their batting average is nearly same in Asian pitches , Younis has scored almost twice as centuries.

Even if YK is not the super-dooper-goat-best-of-best-rockstar-legend test batsman. He did the job for Pakistan. He was practically playing as an opener against all tough oppositions anyways. His 4th innings record shows his important. PP will realize his importance very soon :yk

PS: Nice to see AN Cook among Asian giants. The man is also underrated yet he silently kept on performing :yk

An outstanding cricketer who doesn't get the credit he deserves sometimes. In my eyes, he is the best test batsman to have come out of Pakistan. I believe he has the highest number of 100s in matches won by Pakistan. Miandad scored half his 100s in drawn matches by comparison.

And for the people that like to discredit him, they forget that he only played 19 matches at home. 19 out of 118, that is 16%.

People also conveniently forget that at his absolute peak he only played 7 tests over the span of 3 years. That includes a year of no cricket in 2008. That was at his peak. And for posters that are discussing his away stats, at his peak he missed two series against Australia, one series in New Zealand and a series against England. A total of 11 test matches that he was left out of at his peak.

He has a 100 in South Africa which Inzamam does not. That was scored against a world class bowling attack. He also has a large number of 4th innings 100s. And this counters the point of posters like buffoon that suggest he was a flat track bully. 4th innings in Asia is usually a massive challenge due to deteriorating pitches and turning tracks. In fact, 4th innings on Asian pitches are usually tougher than 4th innings in ROW.

You can literally nitpick anyone's stats if you want to. You can find holes in the stats of Dravid, Inzi, Tendulkar, Miandad but over 10k runs at an average of 52 is not a small achievement.

He was very consistent in Asia, but here is every single inning he has played outside of Asia against non-minnows.

Out of 71 inning, 17 times he crossed 50. So 3 out of 4 times he failed to cross 50.

I am sure stats will look a lot better in Asia for him.

Those are Sachin's numbers at a similar average :sachin :sachin :sachin but that's still great! even if it means having a jobber level match winning capability overall despite holding on to his spot harder then Hogan in his prime for decades

What's your point? You are simply showing that SRT was far more consistent outside of Asia with your post. No one needed any stats to prove that.

Proof that his overseas numbers are deceiving. Excellent in Asia though.

Comparing YK with Dravid..

Dravid had below 40 average (30-40) in SL, SA and to some extent Aus (41) also.. if we leave his 2003-04 tour to Aus, he was a very ordinary batsman in Australia.

But, he was a monster everywhere else with 68 in Eng, 70 in Pakistan, 63 in NZ, 66 in WI and 70 in Zim ..
clearly show that he was very successful outside Asia with exception of Aus and SA.. when the bowling attacks of almost all the countries was good.

When Dravid succeeded he just went on and on.. quite evident from his 60+ average in so many countries.. only if he had averaged 40 in SA and had been slightly more successful against Australia he would have been equal to Tendulkar.

What this also actually shows is that Allan Border is the most underrated batsman of all time.

Tendulkar on the other hand, had been consistent around 50 average mark.. with all his away averages ranging from almost the same 45-55 range.. never did he go to 70 average in any country, nor did he fall below 40 in any of them.

There is a reason.. Tendulkar was mostly a hundred scoring batsman, while Dravid went to score many double hundreds when he succeeded in Eng, NZ, Pak for example.

SRT's average is marginally better on that criteria and as you said in your previous post you take the not outs and big scores away it takes a bigger dip, additionally relative to the games he played the man has not been as impactful. So what you are saying is we should persist with a guy who scores soft runs compared to a match winner.

Most of the younger audience who just started following the sport wouldn't know this and rely on proofs from guys with heavy biases after the beatings Khan gave their teams but I will have to point out that Younis Khan was involved in 7 of Pakistan's 9 away wins since making his debut and averages 114 across 5 of those wins in countries which include New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies and England.

Younis's test performance is as good as Miandad and Inzamam if not better. Where he lacked badly was in ODI, batting average of 31.24 with SR 75.29 in 250+ ODI's is pretty bad for a specialist batsman. Its the biggest reason why Inzy and Miandad are rated over him.

Nope, you can pick any batsman if you think a specific batsman gives you a better chance to win. I was only commenting about consistency. YK was far more consistent in Asia as compared to non-Asia. That's the only point I made with my post. You can measure it by how often some one crosses 50. I have not looked, but I think YK may be actually more consistent than SRT in Asia, because he was always among runs in Asia.

No not just any batsman, I'd take YK and him averaging a few runs less then SRT when he is more likely to win me games then SRT who will score a few more soft runs but not have as big an effect on outcome.

Everyone has entitled to an opinion. If you think that YK gives you more chance to win tests then nothing wrong in you taking YK over SRT.

Not just his consistency but also the fact that he was a big match, tough situation player. He scored how many centuries in the second innings? Was part of one of the great test chases and remarkable in England, one of the finest doubles seen in recent times and a pure match winner.

Finest test batsman post 2010.

Kumble is a good bowler but wasim is atg though kumble has more wickets
Same is the case here
Tendulkar was sorrounded by good players like sehwag, dravid, laxman, Ganguly
So in no way younis can be compared to Tendulkar

Top player. His doubles against India will never be forgotten. Thankful to have seen his best. The current Pakistani batsmen can learn so much from this guy.

Younis is one of my favorite Pakistani batsmen of all-time. A great servant of the game and among one of the best pressure players to have played the game.

He has issues outside Asia against pace bowling but with sheer hardwork and determination, he has managed to find ways to get runs there.

A mediocre limited overs arena cricketer but a very high quality test player. I will rate him higher than Cook. The difference in their averages is of 7, which is quite big to leave out.

Among players from Pakistan, he probably comes down to no.3, behind Miandad and Inzamam. Inzamam gets the nod because he was a very successful one-day player as well.

A grand total of 6 hundreds outside Asia and this guy is somehow an ATG? Raise your batting standards people.

It's because of his average. That's why they are rating him as an ATG.

As someone who has followed a majority of his career I can say he isn't an ATG due to his issues with pace and swing. I am sure the rest of the cricketing world will agree with me regardless of what a few biased fans on this forum say.

If he was Indian they would be singing a different tune.

He was the legend of the game
===
🗓️ #OnThisDay in 2017, Younis Khan became the first Pakistan batter to complete 1️⃣0️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ Test runs during his innings of 58 against the West Indies at Sabina Park, Kingston.

Younis Khan was scarily good with his conversion rate. As soon as he made 50, you knew an innings of 100 or more was inevitable.

It's a testament to his fitness and mentality.

I know he got the tag UAE Khan towards the end of his career, and admittedly those pitches were very benign. But scoring big knocks in the baking desert heat and humidity isn't easy, especially if you're well into your 30s as he was at what most consider a cricketer's retirement age.

Doesn't get the respect he deserves from Pakistan fans, particularly from Misbah's cheerleaders.
That's because 2009 is luck, so is 2017 and so is 1992, But oh 2015 quater final, that's merit amd the greatest thing a pakistani captain has ever achieved in the history of the game.

It's not like misbah had YK's 200 and 300 scores to thank for that no 1 test ranking.

That tag was mainly anointed by jealous imbecile's, he was a bigger match winner then spineless Sachin and as far as Pakistan's greatest overseas wins are concerned in the 2000's, Khan played a pivotal role in all of them and averaged 50+. Those who doubt him, deserve to get stabbed while eating Breakfast.

He was one of the best in the business in test cricket. He played proper big daddy knocks in pressure situations.

The so called God of cricket never crossed 250 in test match cricket.

Younis pummelled the Indians for 267 runs in Bengaluru and also scored 313 against Sri Lankans ( who are pretty much Indians.

Out of all the Pakistani cricketers, there's a reason why Khan was enemy no.1

Compared to Khan he lacked impact.

It's sickening how all the Misbah cult followers have nothing but unsavoury things to say about Younis Khan.

It's not like misbah had YK's 200 and 300 scores to thank for that no 1 test ranking.

I've been saying this from day one. Misbah was fortunate to have him in the side. He was an ATG player of spin bowling, who carried that Pakistan team with the bat particularly in the UAE.

"Misbah was a good red ball captain" is a myth. People forget what happened during the 2016/17 tour of Australia, where he was ridiculed by Ian Chappell and mocked by the rest of the Channel 9 commentators. The guy ran Yasir Shah to the ground and put all the fielders on the leg-side.

Captaining in the UAE does not require the same level of cricketing acumen when compared to the demands of captaining in Australia. In the UAE, it's very one dimensional cricket because it's a graveyard for the faster bowlers. All we see is a battle between spin and those who can bat against the slower bowlers. It doesn't exactly take a genius to work out that you need 3 spinners and you let them bowl 80-90% of the overs. Also, it's actually harder to get the field placings wrong.

Also, there are other examples of where Misbah's captaincy was exposed. Pakistan lost a test match in 2013 against a very poor Zimbabwe team that was well below what you would expect from an entry level test side, let alone an average side. The series ended 1-1.

During the 2016 tour of England, Pakistan built up a lead of 100 runs after both sides had played out their first innings. When England came out to bat for the second innings, Misbah panics and ends up going defensive after 10 overs. England went on to rack up an opening stand of 126 runs and score 445 for the loss of just 6 wickets.

I have no doubt that Pakistan would have won more tests if Younis Khan was captain during the same period. He had the best cricketing mind and this is evident by the 2009 WT20 success and later that year, he was also instrumental in taking Pakistan to the semi-finals of the CT.

Misbah on the other hand led a Pakistan side that crashed out of the 2013 CT after losing all 3 x games. He picked a bum team which featured the likes of Imran Farhat and Umar Amin.

Pakistan also had a very poor 2015 WC under Misbah as well, where they almost lost to Zimbabwe, but Wahab Riaz came through and saved the side's blushes after delivering a stellar performance with both bat and ball.

The bottom line is Misbah will always be a hopeless captain, coach and selector because he has a substandard cricketing IQ. Anyone who rates his cricketing mind, even in the slightest, is also void of possessing any cricketing intelligence.

Younis Khan was a beast in the red-ball format and his absence is still hurting Pakistan till now. We have no replacement for him and I am afraid we might never find one. His game against spin was exemplary and his consistency was something, the players of today will dream of having.

Relevance to this thread?

Younis Khan is currently playing at 50* (35) in the Legends League. This guy can still make a comeback in Pakistan team!

Not one of, he is the greatest red ball batter for pakistan period. YK is next level in Test. Medicore in odi though
Yes. No doubts He is the greatest one for sure. His record is impeccable. Number 1 red ball batter for Pakistan, followed by the likes of Miandad, inzimam etc.

His stats are inflated due to playing lots of game in UAE but he is arguably the greatest ever produced by Pak bar Miandad.

Inzamam is ahead as well due to his ODI exploits.

However, comparing Yousuf to Younis though is like comparing Bell to Cook.
Lol scoring in UAE was not cup of everyone tea at that time, look at scores some other batsmen scored at that time, if he played all his home matches in Pakistan he would finish with 57 average.

I think yk the test player underachieve, the player of his caliber should have atleast 58 test average.
