Steve Smith’s legacy is forever tainted

On topic,

Smith's legacy as batsman is not going to change due to this, but let him build his legacy fully first.

So you mean Rahul Dravid'd legacy is tainted as well since he was convicted of ball tampering in 2004? Or Michael Atherton? Or Sachin Tendulkar? Or Imran Khan? Or Faf Du Plessis?.. amongst legions of other very good/great players who have been caught tampering?

In their case, they did it themselves. Here, he asked the junior most member of the team to do it. That's a chicken. Everybody gave him a benefit of doubt for his brain fade vs India but now it appears he just isn't ethical.

He kept harping about spirit of the game, the infamous "line" for days . Atleast he will shut up now. Root and Williamson are perfect gentlemen. Kohli plays with the line but is not unethical. Smith is a cheater. That's the legacy.

Kohli learnt this art by playing with Ozzie's, how not to cross line that is... :kohli2

Looks like Bradman took it too far in Sandpaper Gate :smith

Where is the damn line? Everyone keeps talking about this illusionary line.

While ball tampering is not new, using a foreign object and organised plan of cheating by an entire team is certainly not very common. Aussies were doing something similar in case of DRS. Kohli pointed out but had no evidence and he was called liar. These bunch of Aussies have been worst in this age of camera and scrutiny.

The line is drawn by ICC. People keep wondering why Kohli isn't fined more for his antics. That was my answer. Kohli's not a cheat though

Leadership group sitting together, planning and executing deliberate cheating as a group. Then coach running wild to instruct players to hide it after it's shown on live camera.

That's taking it too far. I am sure that Aus fans wouldn't like to have such a set up in future. Here if Smith was doing it on his own and spur of moment, it will be a different situation.
100% this..

There haven't been any other instances where this has been proven. This is awful and leaves a big mark on the game and the Aussies. This was all pre-meditated, the fact they brought a foreign object onto the field just makes it worse.

The best test batsman in the world, for many he was second to only Sir Don. But no matter what he achieves now in terms of runs, Steve Smith’s legacy will forever be tainted by his actions yesterday. He had everything to loose especially after the big Ashes win and comparatively very little to gain (a series loss in SA after all is not the end of the world) so wonder what made Steve Smith act the way he did - was it a true ‘brain fade’, a spur of the moment adrenaline or sheer inability to take anything going against oneself? Or is he actually shielding someone? 🤔

Not as a batsman , but as a captain yes. Pretty similar to Greg Chappell's legacy. He is forever tainted as captain for underarm ball incident. He is still considered among the ATG batsman.

People are completely delusional if they think Smith's legacy is Not tainted. This is the social media age, people will not let go of this, ever. This isn't the 90s when world would forget news after a few weeks being telecasted on TV. This event won't be forgotten when the media stops reporting this. It will be kept alive by fans on social media. Smith will be burning on online forums for a long, long time, if not forever. He will always be remembered as a cheat.

The age of internet forgives and forgets no perpetrator if he'/she's famous enough.

People forget man.

He has made a right hash of it PR wise so it will stick wit hhim longer but if he plays for another 5-6 years then his reputation will rise over this.

But yes as an overall cricketer it will taint his legacy. However i dont believe it is irreparable damage.

however he wont be darling of neutral fans anymore
