Dharamsala: Australia captain Steve Smith on Tuesday apologised for letting his "emotions slip" during the aggressively-contested, albeit lost, Test series against India, saying that he was in his "own bubble" at times.

"At times I have been in my own bubble and have let my emotions slip. I apologise for that," Smith said at the end of the four-match series, which India won 2-1 to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India defeated Australia by eight wickets in the fourth and final Test to seal the series at the HPCA Stadium.

It was probably the most competitive series that India played at home in recent years, with not an inch being given by the visitors.

The series had its share of controversies and hostilities that started with the infamous 'Brain Fade' of Smith, when he was caught on camera seeking clues from the dressing room while taking a DRS call.

The incident snowballed into a massive furore after Indian captain Virat Kohli stopped just short of calling Smith a cheat.

The hostilities didn't end after that, as players from both sides had regular on-field run-ins.

However, putting it all aside, Smith was gracious in defeat and lauded India for their dominance despite Australia's resolute show.

"(It was a) magnificent series. One of the best I have been a part of. Credit to India, they are a fantastic cricket side, particularly in their backyard. If you give them a sniff, they will take that," the Australian skipper said.

Before the start of the series, many predicted that the Smith-led young Australian side will be whitewashed by the Indians.

But the visitors showed tremendous fighting spirit and managed to surprise with their resolute performances, quite creditable given that they didn't have a lot of experience of playing in the sub-continent.

"For Australia, this is the toughest conditions for us. To challenge them so much, I am proud. A lot of people wrote us off. They said it was going to be a 4-0 whitewash. I am proud of the way we have competed. We have probably let a few moments slip," Smith said.

"Against India you can't do that. The middle session yesterday, when you lose five for 70, you put yourself behind. Credit to India. Umesh (Yadav) was fantastic. They have all been fantastic."

Smith also praised the HPCA Stadium.

"What an amazing ground. The wicket was a good one. Pace and bounce, that's what we like. It suited spinners as well. If you are willing to bat time, you can get runs," he said.

At least one captain is showing some class.

As they say dude, you can take the guy out of delhi but can't take delhi out of the guy. Kohli being a needless ****. The series is over no need to carry on moaning.

Have u heard what smith say while Sledging Jadeja? He is not a saint in any way compared to kohli but i think kohli takes it too far.

Smith is going to captain RPS surely he cannot carry on his attitude for IPL ,nothing to do with him being greater man also Aussies dont get to decide on the limit of sledging whether on or off field.

Massive respect for Steve Smith, not only is he is the best player of his generation but also, a fantastic human being, the way he single handedly led his troops, he can walk away from this difficult tour with his teammates with their head held high. He has outdone his reputed predecessors and stamped his authority as a true gentleman by the end of the series.

There was no need for him to apologize when his predecessors and contemporaries alike, were nastier than him and yet they refused to budge. Also, considering how the BCCI made a moutain out of a molehill at every turn, starting with a stupid hastag, Bully the bully and Give it back to airing the on-field banter between Jadeja and Wade on its website and using Kohli as a pawn to engage in petty politics.

My respect for Steve Smith has grown proportionately to the disgust I have developed for Kohli during the course of this series, what a loser!! to have him as our captain and to be reminded by his ******* that he is the rightful inheritor to the throne vacated by the Great Sachin Tendulkar, God i hope he is even fit to tie his shoelaces :facepalm::facepalm:

You're a cheat, Steve. The flight's about to take off. Go away.

PS. Compare the # of DRS calls he got right before "brain fade" and after "brain fade"

He is not going away. He is coming right back with this tounge out and tail wagging for IPL $$$$$. In fact I think he is the captain of his IPL side. All will be forgotten and everyone will be friends again.

Shameful for a captain of a national team that too Australia to apologize for a hard fought series and for pushing India to the brinks. Steve Smith just lost a lot of points amongst his players for bowing down to the Indians and Kohli.

Not at all , He has gained a lot more respect and bringing a lot more humility to their side. You feel sour because him apologizing seems like bowing down to Indians for you.

Gracious comments by Smith in the post match. Kohli losing my respect for being a crybaby. I even read that Smith asked Rahane if they can join Indian team for beer after the game and Rahane agreed. That is classy from both smith and Rahane

Let's be honest, it's clear why he's going out of his way to apologize multiple times.

The IPL is a legitimate part of his income.

You talk trash and it'll hurt your wallet in the long-run. No one will pay big bucks for public enemy #1.

I don't think , being neutral or not apologizing was gonna have an effect on his IPL contract. IPL is a business at the end of the day and if he's good , teams would want him regardless. Maybe he generally feel sorry for being a bit outspoken , ill give the credit to him

Funny how some people are making it out like that Smith said sorry because of IPL contract. Maybe Australia lost because they wanted IPL contract then.

Clearly he did cross the line few times as a captain especially so it was very gracious of him saying that. While Kohli despite winning has sour grapes as Australia has the better of him.

All these guys say whatever they want to say knowing perfectly well that all they have to later is to apologize, this way they get best of both kicks !!! This is a standard practice amongst all the people in the public eyes !!!

I'll explain what I meant.

Would you want to be a foreign player in India with their media on your back all tournament long?

He was always going to apologize.

Otherwise, he would have nowhere to hide. They'd keep bringing things up such as "Will Smith adjust with Indian teammates after tough IND-AUS series?" and it would never go away. This would push IPL teams away as they wouldn't want a part of someone who could bring unnecessary drama into the dressing room (even if it's not his fault). It might not have shown this season (since their contracts are decided) but the following seasons might have turned him into a villain for no reason.

No one wants to reduce their earning potential. Don't forget sponsorship deals too. The Indian cricketing audience is the largest in the world, you always want to stay on their good side as a foreign player. It makes simple business sense.

I'm not saying he didn't mean to apologize. Perhaps, he did. BUT the manner in which he did it (i.e. multiple times) shows he has that in his mind too.

Maybe you are correct , I can't say for sure. His statements were a bit more balanced than Kohli's and I do give Smith the credit for that. However professional athlete's are quite known to be quite nationalistic and no holds barred when playing for their country but on a league level go back to having the same camaraderie. Pretty much the whole Premier League or Ice hockey players representing their countries int he olympics and then go back next week playing as team mates in the NHL. For example - Canadians and Russian's go quite hard against each other in the Olympics but then go back to playing together as professionals - Crosby and Malkin for example.

Give credit where it's due. Although, personally I am not a huge fan of Steve Smith and how he carries himself on the field. But i definitely think it was nice of him to apologize. On the other hand Kohli needs to make some changes in his attitude otherwise that will lead to his downfall. He might be liked by people in India ( due to his performances), but outside India he will be hated ( if he isn't already ). Not worth having so much talent if you can't differentiate between being aggressive and being rude.

Why don't people look at what actually happened ?????? All the hell broke loose only AFTER Smith was seen gesturing to the Dressing Room, as to Review or Not !!!! The non-striker told him to do so. The Umpire had to kick him off the field right then. Can you believe a Captain being asked to LEAVE the field ???? Until then Kohli had done nothing, but now he completely lost it. This must have been simmering in his head for a while ... and he over reacted .... not good. You can only blame Kohli for over reacting, but the real rascal was Smith. All of a sudden, all the bets of decent behaviors are OFF. Easy to blame Kohli because of his antics .... but Smith was the real crook.

This is exactly what would have happened if KP had held the captaincy for a meaningful period of time.

It's all about me :kohli2

Smith has taken the correct approach. Kohli needs to learn from him. End of the day it is a game only and losing friendship over it is immature.

The more I see the younger lot nowadays , the more I respect Sachin for the player he was , Playing for more than 20 years , He has had his share of banter , sledging , disrespect from the opposing teams but never ever have you seen that guy lose his composure or disrespect the opposition or the game itself.
Little master commanded respect from everyone

Quality bump. Kohli sussed out Smith exactly for the type of character he is - a classless compulsive cheat. There should be no doubt that Smith, with the aid of his delinquent coach lehman, hatched a plan to subvert the DRS system during that India tour involving his entire team. Nobody will miss his village technique if he's banished forever.

Great bump.

Kohli has so far shown himself to be emotional and over competitive but not a cheat.
