For a while, it has been clear that Smith is the player of his generation. While his temporary absence will allow mere mortals such as Kohli, Root etc to have their moments of glory, Smith will come back tearing and take his rightful spot until the day he retires.,

You heard it here folks!
 
Other mentioned payers are destined for fame, but only Smith is destined for true greatness..
 
How can smith be the player of his generation when he's a dud in 2 out of three formats?

Doubt smith will recover from this, apart from the mental toll this will take, his game is dependent on hand eye coordination and losing a year of his prime will hurt him badly

These controversies cant take away the fact how good a test player he is.

Btw surprising to see an Indian calling Smith, the player of the generation ahead of Kohli.

Doesn't matter, he will be called a cheat for the rest of his life. Unlike the Subcontinent, in the West once your reputation and integrity suffers, it goes downhill from there. Look at Tiger Woods, he has never been able to recover his image again.
 
I will go on and say he will be instrumental in Aussies retaining WC and Ashes.We all love comebacks.Lets see

Agree with you here, his legacy has been destroyed completely, no matter what he achieves on the cricket field, he'll always be remembered as a CHEAT for the rest of his life, his name won't be mentioned alongside legends or greats.

Smith is better than Kohli at Tests and ODI Tournaments - the two highest forms of the game. Kohli being better at ODI bilaterals and T20s nowhere near supersedes that. Smith is the undisputed #1 batsman of this generation and has been the No.1 ranked Test batsmen for almost 3 years straight now. That's insane.

The Australian media, Australian Cricketing community did not hound Warne and neither was Warne ever bought to tears during his ban. In fact lol he said it helps revitalize his career, the rest was very much needed and it gave him some quality time with his family, friends after being on the road for so long.

Smith has been hounded and bought to tears.

Yeah he's been banned for 12 months, not life.

The Australian public has been outraged over the ball-tampering incident and Smith's role in that as a captain. He won't be in that position again. His stature as a batsman is completely intact.

Yes, it will impact his status as a player, don't believe me? Go listen to aussie media, the cricketing experts on one of their shows literally said that smith can score over 15k runs at an average over 60 but it won't matter now, he'll always be remembered as a cheat, you need to just watch a few aussie media videos to understand how far his stature has fallen in the eyes of the public, they literally said that smith will never be mentioned alongside pontings and the waughs ever again
 
Smith is really not missing much for a year tbh. All touring sides happened to be Asians; SL, BD, and India and these tours would only contribute toward increasing his already 60+ average.

Main challenge will come in away tour against Pakistan in March and I am not sure if he will be able to play or not..
 
His entire batting depends on his hand eye coordination. I admit it is a miracle he is able to get away with such a lousy technique. But eventually it will catch upto him.

From what I've read online and on social media, there's generally been a bit more sympathy towards Smith (in the aftermath of the ban) with Warner the recipient of most of the backlash now.

He's very good player in odi and played a pivotal role for his countries wc campaign

He might not be on the level of ABD or kohli in this format but not a dud in any sense

The mark of a true champion is the way in which he bounces back.

Warne after the drug scandal in 2003 returned with a vengeance and took 200+ wickets in 3 years including 96 in 2005 alone.

This is a test for Smith’s mental strength.

Can he do so, remains to be seen.

Average 41 strike rate 86, away average 28, a couple of good knocks on the flat pattas at his hime during world cup won't suddenly transform him into a good player, he's as mediocre as they come
 
I salute the optimising, humanism and pure heartedness of the OP. The world will be so much a better place with people like you and me around.

Having said that, I fear Smith might not have the balls to put this horrific experience.behind and be the same player again. You have to be a genuine villager like Mohammad Amir to put the past behind and conquer the world again. Smith is too much of a goodygood boy and that goodygoodness will keep coming in the way. CA and Anti national Australian media have bullied and abused him to a point he might never be able to recover.

most odi wickets the world over are flat. Kohli has spent his entire career scoring runs on flat as they come odi wickets.

And i will gladly take a player who can actually play big matches over useless bilaterals.

He already has hit his peak. He may retain his average in the 50s, though.

Since at least 6-8 years. 41 average in today's era would be equivalent to an average of 32-33 in the 90s and a strike rate of 86 today would be equivalent to a strike rate of 72 in the 90s. Those are pretty mediocre numbers and it's funny how you chose to ignore his away average of 28

lol kohli has the highest average of all time, even if it's inflated because of flat tracks, he's still the no.1 batsman of this era, and his odi rating points is over 900, only an idiot will take smith over kohli in limited overs.

The gap between Kohli and Smith is a lot smaller than you make it out to be. If Kohli played as many games as Smith in Australia, he'd probably have a better average than Smith.

This is like Messi-Ronaldo comparison, you need to see them play to see how good they really are rather than comparing them based on a spreadsheet.

I guess people like their winners and don't care if they look they're batting with a shovel. If he played for NZ, he wouldn't even be in my top favorite 11 players. So damn ugly to watch, your average club batsmen is more entertaining to watch.

He does (or did) score a lot of runs which is what counts. Arguably one of the Top 3 batsmen of his generation.

Smith and Kohli played in India where Smith faced much better bowling attack. And I don’t need to remind what was the final outcome..

And how does Smith’s average in England compare with Kohli?

And before you bring up this current SA tour as a failure for Smith, he still averages 40+ over there.

This isn't trolling, it's you saying something is a certainty when the rest of the world sees it another way.

Smith doesn't make Australia's best T20 team, and he's nowhere near their best ODI batsmen. So how is he the best batsmen of the generation when in the same generation as a genuine ODI GOAT contender and T20 GOAT?

The best current batsman is the best batsman in Test format which Smith is by a mile..
 
You can call Smith the best Test batsmen in the world and the best Test batsmen of his generation, but to call him the player of the generation when he's ordinary to rubbish in other 2 formats is laughable. Especially when Kohli is around.

Nope, the best batsmen in the world is Kohli.

He can play across all formats and is exceptional in he top 2-3 in every format.

Smith doesn't make the Australian T20 side on merit and he's pretty average in ODis.
 
Kohli has scored 56 international 100s by the age of 29. 21 in 112 innings in Tests.

Smith has 31 international 100s by the age of 28. 23 in 117 innings in Tests.

Mind the gap.

No one cares about Test cricket outside 3-4 countries. Kohli and Smith are close in Tests, Smith doesn't come close to Kohli in the other formats.

Smith has been ranked in the top 10 in ODI only for few months in his entire career with highest ranking of 7. I don't need to say anything about Kohli's ranking in ODI.

We can look at it differently as well,

Kohli has 21 test tons vs Smith having 23 test tons.
Kohli has 35 ODI tons vs Smith having 8 ODI tons.


Gap between these two players in ODI is wider.

Gap between these two players becomes even wider in shorter formats when you take ODI and t-20 together. I don't give too much weight to T20, but it requires different skill set to do so well in all formats and Kohli has been gun in all 3 formats. You are underselling the skill needed to be gun in all 3 formats.

Smith has proved himself in every single condition, while Kohli went completely missing in high profile series like home serie against SA and OZ or away tour of England.

This most recent tour was the first major failure of Smith in years and yet he overall averages 40+ in SA.

There is no competition btw them at the current point.

Failed in Eng for sure, but kohli doesn't need to prove against any opposition if game is played in India. It's good if he performs, but nothing to prove as far as playing in India goes.

Smith is clearly a better test batsman. I never argued against it. I was only countering the point about gap in longer and shorter formats.

Well he does need to considering Smith hasn't failed in single home series since probably 2013. So, home or away, Smith blows Kohli out of water.

Guess which continent the majority of cricket fans are from? That's like saying that no one cares about American fans' opinions on NHL players.

What every conditions lol They roll out flat pitches because of Aussie bowlers and the pitches they are used to. That is not "every condition". He played on much easier condition in SA compared to Kohli. Yet found wanting. There is a good chance an Indian side getting tougher pitches rather than Australian team.

All that is well and good until you compare their head-to-head stats IN India in the series where they played against each other.

All in well and good until you compare their head-to-head stats in South africa in two series that happened one after the other against the same side (albeit SA missing Steyn against Australia).

See, this is what happens if you keep clinging on to one series.

Away average is 45 for one and 50 for another. How one blows away another.

Smith's entire superiority is built on averaging 75-80 in home conditions. That you have to give it to him.

Smith is a damn fine test player, (was) the best out there for me. 4 teams have been blessed with batting maestros this generation - Australia (Smith), India (Kohli), England (Root), and New Zealand (Williamson), rest are pretty much in dumps when it comes to batting prowess.

On the other hand, Smith wouldn’t make it to the top-4 ODI teams of the current generation. And most of the t20 teams (although t20I is fun cricket and should really remain like that).
Even when he was not banned, i couldn’t see Smith dominating ODIs. He’s like a Dravid. ATG test batsman but decent ODI batsman.

5 run difference is pretty significant even if you decide to be selective..
