Smith any day in ODIs and test. I absolutely hate him when he plays against India. His performance in India shows his caliber. For root he doesn't play big innings and when he play against India he didn't concern me like Smith . If it comes to me I want Smith to be out on duck in every matches against India.

Smith in tests, Root in ODIs. Across both formats, I'll go with Root even though Smith had a great world cup.

Joe has more natural ability but Steve better concentration in the long game.

Steve Smith has been the greatest test batsman by far since last many years. That automatically makes him the greatest overall batsman in cricket since test cricket gets 70% weightage followed by 25% for ODI Cricket and 5% for T20 Cricket.

Steven Smith for me. His ability to score big hundreds and take game away from opposition puts him a level or two ahead of Joe Root as far as test cricket is concerned.

Joe Root is better in limited overs format but overall, the gap is enough in tests to give it to Smith at this point of time.

Smith by a landslide. Much better test batsman and his knocks in the triumphant 2015 WC elevate his status, he isn't a bad ODI player by any means. In a major 50 over ICC event as an Indian fan I will always be more scared of a clutch batsman like Smith rather than a bottler like Root. Only in T20s is Root better.

I'll take Smith . Once set , you know he will score big and he seems much stronger mentally.

Root is a very good batsmen in his own right .
