For a bowler with 490 wickets, Broad has been treated rather harshly by England think tank in last 1.5 years.
He has been dropped in favor of the likes of Mark Wood, Joffra Archer and even Chris Woakes when Broad is head and shoulder above all of them and a proven test stalwart.
In addition, his batting is being cruelly ignored. For someone with a century and 13 fifties to his name, being made to bat at no.11 and having Mark Wood and Joffra Archer batting ahead of him shows sort of lack of trust in his batting ability of your second most experienced player.
He has arguably been better than Anderson in last 1 or 2 years and has led the bowling attack admirably well in absence of Anderson.

I think he has played almost every game. Besides the 1st test,, sri lankan tour is the only other time he wasn't picked

Diagree. Broad wasnt up to the mark. He has just rediscovered himself and is bowling well now. Nobody should guarantee a place in the team based on what they did in the past.

A bowling average of 32 overseas is not necessarily eye watering for a front line test team.

Broad bats like a no.11 now. His batting is not the same after he got hit in the head. Again we should not go by the past as numbers can be deceiving.

Without a doubt, without a doubt.

Time and again, Stuart Broad has shown England and the world that he has in him to lead the pace attack and win games for his team. He delivered two of the finest spells of the previous decade one without Anderson and the other when Jimmy was bowling poorly, one against Australia and other against South Africa.

He has comfortably been the best England bowler in past few years but England's obsession with pace has always costed them. They make their bet on Archer after the Ashes and on Wood after SA tour but failed to understand the value of Broad who was a consistent performer with the new ball in both the series. Broad is a must for England in every match unless Broad asks for rest.

Broad's recently been the fall guy on two notable occasions in favour of a new flavour of the month bowler, only for it to backfire massively.

Last year in the Caribbean he was dropped for Sam Curran due to the latter's "all-round" abilities, but offered no threat bowling 78mph on those dry Caribbean wickets. England were thumped.

In the 1st Test, again vs West Indies, England chose the pace of Mark Wood when Wood's record in England is poor. And England shelled the series opener.

He’s reacted in the best possible way to being dropped and he seems to be playing his best cricket in some time. One of the best players that we have produced in the last 20 years I’d say.

What Broad and Anderson have achieved is simply amazing. England may struggle in the bowling department once Broad retires.

I think Ed Smith and co. want a bowler with control and hence they have preferred a 38 year old Jimmy over Broad on occasion. Also, they probably wanted to give Archer And Mark Wood enough matches before tours of India and Australia where Anderson will not play again. So some of these decisions are somewhat justified. Dropping Broad for that short trundler Sam Curran in the Caribbean was a farcical decision just to include a so called all-rounder and it backfired spectacularly.

He is a top class bowler. England need to treat him like one. I will never understand why he didn't play in the first test.

Average of 32 is really good in the modern game, not many fast bowlers can maintain that over an extended period

I think England clearly felt they needed a bowler who averages 25, hence they have since tried other options. Cant blame England. To be World no.1, you simply cannot carry a bowler with such a high average even in the modern game.

I think they know they cant play broad and anderson forever

They need to phase them out and are looking at slowly putting in fresh blood

This rubbish about bowling averages away from home needs to be assessed in light of the fact that even Kagiso Rabada's away average is above 30.

And he has responded with a man of the match performance.

Really don’t see Pakistan holding up against a bowling attack of Anderson, Broad and Archer.

A whitewash is on the cards.

But who said that Rabada was the bechmark?

Rabada is a good bowler, but far far far from a bowler that the current generation must be idealising.

Ideal situation for Pakistan when they have been completely written off. Takes off the pressure from the team and the fans. Any victories in tests or even any victories in sessions would now be taken as an unexpected bonus.

We have been hearing this forever now. We get written off most of the time and we also lose most of the time.

We are a poor side and it doesn’t matter if we are written off or not.

I wouldn't say he has been mistreated on the whole, we need to remember that the England selectors need to find that balance between experience / youth and look to the future as well, there are instances where you can say he has been overlooked but England like to rotate their pacers to and give the newbies some time to develop. But I don't think you can entirely blame the England selectors for over looking both Anderson and Broad at times, it truly is an unprecedented situation where for the first time in history you have a pair of opening bowlers who have been able to deliver for as long as they have, longevity is criminally under rated especially among fast bowlers; you wont find two bowlers who have been more professional, the only other you can say is McGrath; therefore this creates a unique situation where England have to develop bowlers for the future but also accommodate both Anderson and Broad when you wouldn't always expect it given the stereotypes surrounding age and a fast bowlers shelf life, they are on a knife edge in that regard as well.

It was a poor call from Ed Smith not to play him in the 1st test. You always go in with your best line up in the first test match of a series. I guess with 6 test matches being squeezed into a short space of time and with planning for the Ashes were the reasons for playing Wood and Archer.

I expect Broad will play the 1st test against Pakistan but be rested for the next. Won't matter who bowls against Pakistan anyway they will be walking wickets.

To be fair to Pakistan, while they haven't won a series in England; they haven't lost one either for almost 10 years, so they do enjoy playing here and making things very interesting which make them great draws over here. Don't know how well they will do this time round as the batting line up is fragile and I don't have confidence in their overall strategy. But they have some resources especially on the bowling front which can potentially enable them to maximise the possibility of competing in the series.
