An engineering student told Prime Minister Narendra Modi about a program that could help dyslexic children who face reading and writing difficulties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced searing criticism on social media on Sunday as a video clip showing him cracking a joke on dyslexia allegedly at the expense of Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi was widely shared on Twitter. The Prime Minister made the joke during an interaction that was beamed live to thousands of students participating in a competition to find technology-driven solutions to tackle issues related to women and children.
During the video conference for 'Smart India Hackathon 2019' on Saturday night, an engineering student from Dehradun told the Prime Minister about a program that could help dyslexic children who face reading and writing difficulties.

She said, "We have an idea to help dyslexic children, whose pace of learning and writing is very slow. But they have a high intelligence and creativity level as you have seen in the movie Taare Zameen Par..."

It is at this point that the Prime Minister interrupted the student and asked a question.

"Will this program work for a 40-50 year old child too?" PM Modi asked, drawing laughter from the students.

As he took a step back to let the punch line sink in, many broke into guffaws and applause.

Prompted by her peers, the student with the microphone replied: "Yes sir, it will work."

But PM Modi wasn't done yet.

"Then that will make the mothers of such children very happy," he said, to another round of laughter.

The exchange was severely criticised on social media, including by members of the opposition.

BJP leaders have frequently attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi over his faux pas, often painting him as immature or slow. The Prime Minister has himself lashed out at the Congress chief for being "childish" after he hugged him in parliament at the end of an impassioned debate last year.

Have a funny bone man. He cracked a joke at the expense of his political rival. You speak as if he called a dyslexic kid onto stage and humiliated him.

Is there any more depths this vile creature could sink to? What an abomination of a human being? And to think bhakts worship him!

My word!!!!! How low can he stoop? Making fun of dylexia and using it against Rahul and Sonia!!!!how pathetic!!

Good for him that most of his voter base is Illiterate so they wont even know or care.

You find this funny? Thankfully quite a few are still sane and could see through this vile creature's 'joke'.

It was a pretty bad joke to be honest. Though he definitely wasn't trying to make fun of people suffering from dyslexia though.

I have seen Indian politics enough over the years. They are not as Suave or politically correct as the west, Trump excluded. I've heard worse. This is no where close. It is supposed to be a funny comment undermining Rahul who clearly is gaffe prone.

The mistake you all are making is trying to hold an Indian politician to the same standards as a Suave Obama or a politically correct Blair or a charming Trudeau. Don't!!! Take it as it is, which was clearly a joke on Rahul. That dude's a dummy.

I know it was for Sonia but that does not make it sound any better

This is election time. That means undermine your opponent with every arrow in your quiver. Just sit back, laugh, enjoy the drama. It is going to get a lot more interesting.

I'm no fan of Rahul, but he is thousand times better than this vile creature.

A person who could address a lady by calling her 50 crore ki girlfriend and equate dead Muslims with puppy, calls Muslims as hum 2 hamare 25, list is endless.

Modi ji stoops, only to conquer. While others have brought the political discourse to a new low, Modi ji's classy humour is the only redeeming quality in the cesspit that is indian politics.

Cracking jokes is not Modi's thing at all. What will be hilarious is the run up to the Indian elections:maqsood

Could be. But Rahul' s gaffes are well known. I received so many memes over the years that I had to upgrade my phone for better memory coz I didn't want to delete any of them. Election time is the best time to watch news with so many attacks and angles on every aspect of every politician. Just have fun. Modi ain't gonna grab a bunch of dyslexic kids and humiliate them in public.

What's wrong with that joke? He was just mocking his opponent leader.

Apparently people have high expectations from someone who they also call a chaiwala, religious nut, ultra nationalist, war mongerer

Two different points.

After recently decided to listen to one of his speech, expectation was never high but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be criticized for joking about a medically approved disease.

No one should be made fun of their medically diagnosed diseases.

This is the first time I am with Modi. It's just banter nothing more nothing less.

I don't think he made fun of a disease or it's victims. At least that's not the intention. It's intended solely for two people and they are his adversaries. Then again, as I said, don't expect high standards on political banter before elections. Just grab a popcorn

Only in India would a major leader not only get away with making a highly insensitive and cheap joke but even get applauded for it.

If the children themselves are applauding this idiot who are we to take offence?

Having said that, I am not a fan of political correctness. As pathetic as Modi is, he surely did not mean to offend the dyslexic community. It’s just that being an uneducated village idiot he simply doesn’t know of modern day moral code and sophistication.

Even I was habitual of calling people ******* until some people corrected me on it.

Censored word above being reeetard. Can’t call anyone that today. I miss times when you were not judged for every little hint taken out of context.

Pakistani here. Not a Modi fan at all. However, I think fellow Pakistanis are going over the top on this. They hate everything what Modi says or does.

It wasn't a jibe at dyslexic people at all.

If I remember correctly, our own PM had passed racist remarks over fellow colleague from other party (MQM). He was in the opposition then. People also laughed at those remarks.

So, I would say that it is more of sub-continent culture and have bigger issues to deal with than this.
