Summer Transfer Window

Chris Wood: Burnley sign Leeds United striker for club record fee

Burnley have signed striker Chris Wood from Leeds United for a club record transfer fee, thought to be about £15m.

The 25-year-old scored 44 goals in 88 appearances after joining the Championship side from Leicester City in July 2015.

The New Zealand international ruled himself out of Leeds' match against Sunderland on Saturday amid speculation about his future.

Wood, who is Sean Dyche's sixth summer signing, joins on a four-year deal.

He has found the net once in three appearances for Leeds this season, but said he is now relishing his chance in the Premier League.

"I've had tastes of being in there but I've never had the chance to give it a proper bash," said the former West Brom youngster. "Coming here I feel I've got a proper opportunity to do that. I've never started a Premier League game and this is what I want to do.

"This is a club that wants to stay in the Premier League for years to come and it's going that way."

Wood is eligible to play for Burnley in the EFL Cup after being an unused substitute in Leeds' opening-round win over Port Vale and will be available for Wednesday's second-round derby at Blackburn.

Burnley's previous record signing was January recruit Robbie Brady, whose fee could reach £13m.

Can't believe Liverpool rejected over £100 million for PC. He's not even worth that amount, Liverpool could use that money to buy a CB and a striker which would strengthen there team.

I believe the fee was £80m with add ons, such as him winning Ballon D'or and Struddige playing a season without getting injured. They probably will sell before the window closes, Just waiting for Barca to up the bid.

Naby Keita: Liverpool agree club-record deal for Leipzig midfielder for July 2018

Image copyright BBC Breaking news
Liverpool have agreed a club-record deal to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, with the player officially joining on 1 July 2018.

The Reds have agreed to pay the £48m release clause that will allow him to move next summer, plus an undisclosed premium.

The 22-year-old had been one of Jurgen Klopp's primary targets this summer, but Leipzig had refused to sell.

The deal will surpass the £35m paid to Newcastle for Andy Carroll in 2011.

The German side finished second behind champions Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last season, allowing them to qualify for the Champions League group stages.

Last month, the club's owner Dietrich Mateschitz said they had rejected a 75m euro (£66m) bid for Keita and the player "still has a contract and he will fulfil it".

So far this summer, Liverpool have signed winger Mohamed Salah from Roma for £34m, full-back Andrew Robertson from Hull for £8m and striker Dominic Solanke after his contract at Chelsea expired.

The Anfield club are also prepared to test Monaco's resolve to keep midfielder Thomas Lemar with an offer of about £60m before Thursday's transfer deadline.

Ousmane Dembele: Barcelona complete £135.5m deal for Dortmund forward

Ousmane Dembele was presented on the pitch at the Nou Camp on Monday
Barcelona have completed a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund forward Ousmane Dembele for an initial £96.8m fee, potentially rising to £135.5m.

The 20-year-old France international signed a five-year contract at the Nou Camp alongside the club's president Josep Maria Bartomeu on Monday.

The deal is the second most expensive of all time, eclipsed only by Neymar's recent £200m move to Paris St-Germain.

Barca said Dembele's contract has a release clause of 400m euros (£369.6m).

Dembele said: "I'm very happy to be here. It has always been my dream to be at Barcelona and now I'm here I'm very happy to have achieved my dream.

"It is the best club in the world with the best players in the world."

Dembele's last appearance for Dortmund came in the German Super Cup on 5 August. The Bundesliga side rejected a bid from Barca for the forward earlier in August, with the player then suspended for missing training.

Dortmund said they rejected Barca's approach because their offer "did not correspond to the extraordinary footballing and additional value of the player and the present economic situation of the European transfer market".

With regard to the agreed fee, Dortmund said in a statement that the payment of add-ons "was agreed up to a maximum total amount of approximately 40% of the fixed transfer fee".

Barca have failed with three bids for Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, with their most recent offer of being £114m.

Luis Suarez's transfer from Liverpool in 2014 was officially their most expensive previous purchase, at £75m.

However, Bartomeu has said in the past that "the overall cost of the operation" to sign Neymar from Brazilian club Santos in 2013 was "over 100m euros (£92m)", despite the transfer fee having been disclosed as £48.6m.

Dembele exploits attract Barca's attention

Dembele
Dembele's record for Dortmund in the Bundesliga last season
Last season, Dembele scored 10 goals and provided 21 assists as Dortmund finished third in the Bundesliga and won the German Cup, also reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.

He joined Dortmund from French side Rennes on a five-year deal in May 2016, having been voted Ligue 1 young player of the year for the 2015-16 season, when he scored 12 goals and made five assists.

Dembele made his senior France debut in 2016, the only goal in seven caps to date coming in a 3-2 friendly victory over England in June.

He was left out of the France squad for September's World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Luxembourg, with manager Didier Deschamps explaining on Thursday: "Ousmane hasn't trained for a fortnight and he's waiting to see if the transfer will go ahead or won't go ahead."

The second biggest transfer ever

2017 - Neymar £200m (Barcelona to Paris St-Germain)

2017 - Ousmane Dembele £135.5m (Dortmund to Barcelona)

2016 - Paul Pogba £89m (Juventus to Manchester United)

2013 - Gareth Bale £85m (Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid)

2009 - Cristiano Ronaldo £80m (Manchester United to Real Madrid)

Analysis

By John Bennett, BBC World Service:

Of course the transfer fee is astonishing but former team-mates and former coaches will tell you that Ousmane Dembele has the potential to be a Ballon d'Or winner.

They mention his extraordinary acceleration on the ball, they rave about how two-footed he is (his right foot is supposed to be stronger than his left but it's very close) and they talk about his extraordinary skills, touch and close control.

His former manager at Rennes, Rolland Courbis, actually claims that Dembele could have joined Barcelona last summer but turned them down. He says they offered more money than Borussia Dortmund but the French youngster chose to go to Germany.

His change of heart now may have a lot to do with Neymar's departure offering more guaranteed game time in a World Cup year. Filling the Brazilian's boots will come with a lot of pressure but Dembele has the quality to make that spot his own.

CFC is caught in their own trap. For last few years, Chelsea maintained the largest squad & Jo Mou's strategy was to loan at least 20 players to lesser sides, who'll play against his competitors but can't against Chelsea. This year also Chelsea probably has highest number of loaned players. This actually didn't help smooth transition of squad, rather Chelsea always depended on Mafia money from Russia to solve their problems. But, now I guess Putin has tighten screw for his cronies after Panama papers, aftermath of which we can see at Chelsea & Monaco. Matic sale was beyond explainable though - might be off the field issues.

In this market, fixing team in January could be blood shedding painful - unless Conte can force players to submit transfer request, a player like Henderson might cost him even £75m in January. Probably, after Newcastle & Arsenal Chelsea has goofed up the Transfer window most.

Yes, it was rather underwhelming, though we made some impressive signings like Morata and Bakayoko. I think we are lacking quantity, not quality.

Premier League: Transfer window will close before start of season

Premier League clubs have voted to close next summer's transfer window before the 2018-19 season starts.

Managers have complained that allowing players to move once the season is under way causes disruption to their squads and preparations.

From next season, the window will close at 17:00 BST on the Thursday before the Premier League campaign begins.

The vote was not unanimous and clubs will still be able to sell players until the end of the normal window.

The window across Europe runs until 31 August.

Fourteen Premier League clubs voted in favour of the amendment, which was the minimum total needed for the plans to be approved. Five voted against and there was one abstention.

The Premier League's move means while clubs will be able to sell until that date, buying activity will cease on 9 August for the 2018-19 season.

European leagues will still be able to buy and sell until 31 August, while the Football League's window also remains unaltered.

Football League bosses have indicated they could follow the Premier League's move but require further dialogue with stakeholders before a decision is made.

The right way to do business?

The early finish will not mean the Premier League's transfer window is shorter as it will start earlier and be 12 weeks long, in line with Fifa rules.

In August, Tottenham striker Harry Kane said closing the window early would allow players to concentrate.

His views were echoed on Friday by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who stated players need "clarity".

"It's important that we close all that stuff before the championship starts," said Wenger. "Players have no clarity. Are they in? Are they out? Will they be tapped up on the afternoon of a game? It's not the way to work."

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson also said the window should be closed early when he was asked about Barcelona's bids for Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho.

Speaking before Thursday's announcement, Everton manager Ronald Koeman said he hoped the rest of Europe would follow the move.

"If we do it in the Premier League and the rest of Europe don't do this, still we have a problem," said Koeman. "The best is before starting the competitions, stop the transfer window because it's very silly."

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho stressed the fact European clubs would have a wider opportunity to do business would not be a disadvantage for English clubs.

"The risk is minimal and even those powerful clubs have to know if we can't buy players we're not going to sell," said Mourinho.

Reaction from Europe

Giuseppe Marotta, the director general of Italian champions Juventus, backed the decision by Premier League clubs and said he wants Serie A to follow suit.

He said it was "a decision that I had been waiting for," while Roma sporting director Monchi also said the move was a "right and logical decision".

"The Premier League's decision to end the transfer window early is wise. Now we have to extend the discussion to a European level," Marotta said.

"It's the right choice. Having such a long transfer window creates turmoil, a well-run club succeeds by planning out a transfer campaign.

"The transfer market has to be limited, you can't have players moving when the leagues have already started."

Analysis

BBC Radio 5 live sports news correspondent Richard Conway

Fourteen Premier League clubs voted in favour, five were against and one abstained.

Such figures are sufficient though to herald a new era for English football and shows a distinct boldness on the part of the clubs to go it alone.

The EFL may follow suit in due course but the major European leagues, as it stands, will still have around three weeks to try and snatch star Premier League players.

Will La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Eredivisie, Serie A now fall in line? Given concerns over English economic dominance continental officials may see this is as an opportunity to exert some form of competitive advantage.

However, English clubs are confident - given their vast financial strength - that they can resist big money offers, just as Liverpool did this summer when Barcelona came calling for Philippe Coutinho.

But Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore insists competition integrity was the main motivation for this move, with clubs eager to stop their domestic rivals poaching players after the first day of the season.
