"The roles of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri should be reviewed if India fail to beat a depleted Australian side in their four-match Test series, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar believes."

Gavaskar was baffled by India’s selection for the second Test in Perth, where it failed to take a specialist spinner while Australia’s, Nathan Lyon, was named man-of-the-match.

India lost by 146 runs and former Test batsman Gavaskar was unimpressed, saying after the match that “selection blunders” are increasingly hurting the side.

Gavaskar is quoted as saying a widespread review of all positions within the India national team should be conducted if India lose the series.

“We have been seeing this - the selection blunders that have been committed since the tour of South Africa. It has cost the team because it has lost matches which could’ve been won if the proper selection had been made,” Gavaskar told Indian network Aaj Tak, according to The New Indian Express.

Gavaskar is also quoted as saying a widespread review of all positions within the India national team - including those of captain Kohli and coach Shastri - should be conducted if India lose the series.

“They have to look at the combination of their team, look at the hole that needs to be plugged and pick the men to do it,” he said.

“If they do that then they can certainly win the next two matches but if they don’t, and that too against this Australian team which does not have Steve Smith or David Warner, then the selectors need to think whether we are getting any benefit from this lot - the captain, coach and support staff.

Gavaskar has recently been critical of Kohli’s captaincy, slamming his bowling selections as Australia built a healthy first innings total in the second Test.

Speaking of Kohli’s decision to not give talented seamer Jasprit Bumrah the new ball, he said on Sony Sports: “Astonished, baffled not just surprised.

“Baffled because the ball he bowled to Paine with the second new ball towards the end of yesterday’s play — pitching on a length, beating Paine and going over wicketkeeper Pant’s head. When somebody is bowling that way, why would you not give him the ball straight away at the start of the day’s play?”

The following day Kohli scored a century before making a statement in his celebration - pointing to his bat and making a talking motion with his hand.

Fox Cricket commentator Kerry O’Keeffe said he believed the gesture was aimed at Gavaskar.

“I’m going for Sunny, because I think he’s super sensitive to any sort of criticism,” O’Keeffe said.

“It was about his leadership, not about his batting.

“He somehow found a way to say, ‘let’s direct it back to my batting. Sunny, this does the chit-chat. This does the captaining’.”

India is the world’s number one ranked Test side but faces the possibility of losing consecutive away series.

The nation in August lost a five-match series away to England 1-4 and is now 1-1 against Australia.

The next match of the Border-Gavaskar series is in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

Gavaskar said the first player he would drop for the match is opener KL Rahul, who has made just 48 runs at 12 this series.

Gavaskar is right. Good that he spoke immediately and kept Kohli's role also under scrutiny.

This has been a long time coming, you cannot start a dictatorship without consequences. You know the writing is on the wall when gavaskar starts criticizing you. Win this series and you keep your job and power you lose and a lot of people are more than happy to cut you down to size, that is the message for Kohli and Shastri.

Finally! Produce results with the free hand given or move out and make way for something better.

Well said. The way Shaoli carry on they more than deserve a few AMRAAMs hurled at them.

Nobody better to do it than Gavaskar.

It will be a sad day for indian cricket if shashtri is removed as the coach. he has brought steel and spine to this indian side.

If Steel and Spine means consistently making wrong decisions being arrogant about it and losing most of your games, rather not have this brittle steel and Bendy Spine.

Of the 13 tests India have played this year, they have only won 5. For a side supposedly the best in the world, with the best batsman and supposedly one of the best bowling line ups, that is very, very poor. A number one side should never lose the majority of test matches, especially when you count two of the wins were against the Windies.

He normally speaks out against players who are NOT from Mumbai. His bias is known to all. Did he say a word against Rahane who played that reckless shot to get out?

Just because he didn't speak against Rahane doesn't mean he is wrong here. Shastri needs to be kicked out and kept at least 100 miles away from the team.

He rarely speaks out against a captain though unless things are very bad, and Shastri is not only from Mumbai but a very good friend of his.

Looks like Gavasker agrees that this is a seriously weak Australian team. India really should win this series. They have a good team and the quality is spread all over this time, not just in the batting department.

And one was a dead rubber...

Exactly.

Naseerudin Shah is the latest one joining the "bash Kohli" club. He's calling him "the world's worst behave player". https://sports.ndtv.com/australia-v...-kohli-as-worlds-worst-behaved-player-1963969

I dunno if he is "the worst" and I usually like players with a bit of aggression but it is better to be like Wasim and Waqar than like Kohli, who oversteps the mark on several occassions.

Come on, being the number 1 team does not make us invincible. Being number 1 now is completely different from when the West Indies and the Aussies dominated the scene. Ever since the Aussie domination ended, being the number 1 team has simply meant that that team is better than the other teams, not miles and miles ahead like the Aussies and the West Indies were during their time.

True.

He didn't speak against Kohli the player but Kohli the captain and Shastri the coach who btw played for Bombay so your point is moot.
Gavaskar rarely speaks out against Indian players or anyone as such nowadays, if you were talking about Manjrekar I would understand.

Poor move by Gavaskar, now Kohli and Shastri will be stubborn and stick to their guns. They might play two spinners in Melbourne :yk

Selection has been terrible. Injuries did not help Kohli either.

Ideally, Shaw/Ashwin/Pandya should play all the matches. That will strengthen the batting immensely.

You cannot win overseas Test matches with 2 dud openers. I cringe every time I see Vijay and Raul walk out. Lower order is even more pathetic.

For the next Test, at least Ash and Pandya will be back. That will improve the batting significantly.

With Shaw being out, I would drop Vijay or Rahul and play Mayank Agarwal. Not that Mayank is great. But he wont be any worse than Vijay/Rahul.

Damn even show biz people are against Kohli... :yk

It's Kohli against the world baby, and Kohli got nothing to lose (2pac) :yk

Nasserudin shah is show biz but he did a show on cricket midwicket tales, he is a test cricket buff and pretty knowledgeable on the same but yes his input holds no value, the show he hosted was very good though.

This. We are 2 down for next to nothing. This won't win us tests, especially away tests.

As much as I like Virat as a player, his on field attitude stinks. Playing aggressive cricket is one thing but acting like a child is completely different. Also Ravi needs to cool it with his stupid comments.
