Tamim Iqbal retires from international cricket [Update@ Post#109]

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal said Thursday he would prolong his break from Twenty20 internationals for at least another six months, adding to speculation over his future in the short format. Tamim is one of Bangladesh's greatest batting assets and has captained the one-day international side for the past two years. But he has not played a 20-over international since March 2020 and withdrew his name from last year's World Cup to give younger players an opportunity.

Bangladesh failed to win at the tournament and also suffered a clean-sweep series loss against Pakistan at home in November.

The team's top-order struggles have sparked calls for Tamim's return, but he made clear on Thursday that his priorities were elsewhere.

"There were a few discussions over my T20 career in the last few days," Tamim, 32, told reporters in Chittagong.

"They want me to continue T20 cricket until the World Cup (starting October), but I said I am not going to think T20 cricket in the next few months," he added.

"Hopefully, young players will play so good in the next six months that I won't be needed."

Tamim is playing in the domestic Bangladesh Premier League competition, where he has shown glimpses of his past T20 form, hitting two fifties in the first four matches for Dhaka.

Tamim said he needed to be selective with international engagements to allow himself an extended one-day and Test career.

"I have still four to five years left," he said. "If I can stay fit I want to play another four or five years."

Bangladesh are scheduled to play two T20s against Afghanistan at home next month and three away against West Indies in June.

Bangladesh one-day international captain Tamim Iqbal termed the question of him batting at number four as stupid. The left-handed batsman on Sunday spoke to the media when he was revealed as the Brand Ambassador Robi, one of the leading mobile networks of the country.

Tamim in his 17-year-long international career has opened for Bangladesh in 428 innings out of 429 till date across all formats. The only time he couldn’t bat as opener was during the Potchefstroom Test in South Africa back in 2017. Tamim, who was off from the field during his side’s fielding for about 49 minutes, came to bat at five and scored 39 on that occasion.

But recently Bangladesh batting coach Jamie Siddons was asked by a journalist whether experienced Tamim would serve better batting at four considering the fragility of Bangladesh top order that saw many collapses recently.

Siddons, however, said, to do that Bangladesh first need to find an opener to replace Tamim, the most prolific run scorer in country’s history. Tamim on Sunday outburst upon the question of him batting lower down the order.

“What do you [the reporter] think? I should bat at number four or I should open? I am not sure what is going in the person’s mind who had first raised the question. I think the question itself was stupid,” said Tamim who has scored more than 14000 runs batting as an opener.

“Why do I need to bat at number four? I do not see any reason. I have been opening for 17 years and I have been doing quite well. So, there is no chance (me batting at four),” he added.

With the ICC T20 World Cup nearing and his six-month break from T20I also nearing end, Tamim was quarried of his plan on playing the shortest format of the game. The southpaw claimed he not being given the space to speak his heart and thoughts.

“Nobody gives me a chance to explain my plan regarding my T20s. Either you [media] say it or someone else tells it [regarding my T20's future] and let it move like this because I am not given any chance [by the board] to tell anything,” Tamim told reporters.

“I have been playing for so long at least I deserve it, what I feel or think they should hear it from me. But either you [media] give some kind of notion or someone (board) else tells something. And as they say something I don't have anything to say,” added the left-handed batter.

Shakib al Hasan’s reappointment as the Test captain has been the talk of the cricket fraternity for last few days. Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim sharing his opinion on the matter said Shakib should be given enough time to prove his credential.

“I played under his captaincy twice, very early before 2011 and last time when he did and it is not rocket science. We all know that he has a very good cricketing brain and I am sure captaining the Test team is not easy as not many results come in our favour in this format,” said Tamim.

“But as I always said that when I was the captain, I said 'you need to give me a lot of time' and the same goes for Shakib. You need to give him a lot of time and you cannot be impatient because this is one format that we are not very strong in. With his leadership planning and everything along with support from all of us maybe in two to three years we will become a good Test team,” said the 33-year-old batter.

The Bangladesh Test team is now travelling to West Indies in batches. Tamim and few other members of the team are scheduled to leave Dhaka for the islands on Monday.

Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal Tuesday took to his official social media account to explain on the issue of his claim that the Bangladesh Cricket Board has “not communicated” with him on his future in T20Is.

Tamim gave out the clarification on the back of BCB president Nazmul Hasan’s statement that the cricketer lied over the matter.

In the long facebook post, Bangladesh opener Tamim clarified what he had meant when he spoke regarding his T20I future at an event at the Robi Corporate Office earlier this week.

It is understood that Tamim gave the public post after speaking to BCB chief Nazmul on the issue.

“I see a lot of people getting confused or spreading some confusion in the media about my T20I future. Two days ago, at an event, I stated clearly that I am not getting the opportunity to announce my decision and that other people are saying different things,” said Tamim in his post.

“I never said the board did not communicate with me or that I never had any discussion with them on this regard. I have been contacted over my T20I future a number of times by the board. I took a six-month break [from T20Is] after a discussion with the board. And I even had discussions with the board a few times after that. I never questioned this [board's attempt to contact Tamim over his T20I future],” Tamim continued.

The cricketer from Chittagong in the statement further went on to clarify what he had said in the event held at Robi Corporate Office in Dhaka Sunday.

“Whatever I said during that event, I am stating it here again: ‘I am not being given the chance to talk about my T20I plans. Either you (media) say it or someone else says it. So, let it continue like this. I am not given a chance. I have been playing cricket for a long time and I think I deserve to say what I think. But either you give [people] an idea or someone else does. Now if the decision is already being put out there then that leaves me with nothing else to say’,” clarified Tamim and claimed that a few media outlets had misinterpreted it when speaking to BCB supremo Nazmul.

“That's all I had said. Did I mention here that I was not contacted [by BCB over my T20I future]? Is there any such words or implication? I put it in simple words that I am not being given the chance to speak my mind. I took a break for six months and even during this break, the media and others are writing or saying things as they like. I am in constant touch with the board and they know very well about my stance regarding T20Is. I just want to announce it myself and I just want that time. When the time comes, I will definitely announce my decision. There is still over a month and a half remaining in the six-month break period. But the sad part is, no one is willing to wait it out,” said Tamim.

Bangladesh opening batter Tamim while speaking in the event had also made headlines after he termed question of a reporter on him batting at No 4 in Tests as “stupid”.

Opener Tamim Iqbal emerged as the second Bangladeshi to score 5000 Test runs. The left-handed batter was short by 19 runs from the milestone which he scored after Bangladesh were sent to bat first in the first game of the two-match Test series against hosts West Indies in Antigua on Thursday. Tamim at the same time also recorded the fastest Bangladesh batter to 5000 runs – in 68 games and 129 innings.

Tamim, however, was not in state to celebrate the moment as Bangladesh had a horrific start losing three early wickets – all for ducks.

While Mahmudul Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque struggled against the Windies pacer and the early movement on the wicket and perished scoring no runs, Tamim scored three boundaries to register the required runs to reach the milestone and repair the damage. Tamim’s current run rate of 39.53 in Test, is the highest amongst the Bangladesh batters.

Experienced middle-order batter Mushfiqur Rahim was the first to reach the landmark for Bangladesh. Mushfiqur beat Tamim in the race in the previous series, against Sri Lanka, at home last month. Mushfiqur is Bangladesh's most experienced Test cricketer and has played 82 Tests for the country having started his career in 2005.

Tamim in the game got retired hurt on 133, following cramps on his back and wrist, and was on 4981 runs.

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from T20Is on Sunday, drawing curtains on a 15-year long career in the shortest format. Iqbal took to his official Facebook page to announce his decision, following Bangladesh's 3-0 series victory in the ODI series against West Indies.

"Consider me retired from T-20 international from today," Tamim wrote.

The Bangladesh star represented the side in 78 T20Is, scoring 1,758 runs at a strike rate of 116.96. His last appearance for Bangladesh in the shortest format of the game came over two years ago during a game against Zimbabwe in Mirpur.

In January, Tamim took a six-month long break from the format; however, he did take part in a domestic T20 tournament throughout this time. Tamim had also skipped the T20 World Cup last year but insisted that he hadn't retired from the format then.

Tamim's announcement came shortly after Bangladesh defeated West Indies by four wickets in the final ODI of the series, securing a 3-0 series victory. The Bangladesh opener was named the player of the series.

Shakib has been a disaster for Bangladesh. Zero charisma, zero attitude, zero leadership.

I know Tamim has had his failures, but to me he is the Fakhar Zaman of Bangladesh. I say make him captain and give him the coaching/management that he wants. Tamim still has 3 solid years left in him

Maybe our Bangla PPers can correct me but I believe in recent times, he has become a liability. Wajahatullah Wasti-type Tuk-tuk is his mantra these days (eats up loads of balls), hardly ever gives a racy start.

Another problem is his less-than-stellar fitness (frequent breakdowns for one reason or the other).

His last few scores weren't great, but no bad either. I am puzzled when batters have fitness problems.

Tamim Iqbal to 'wait till January' and make decision on his future in international cricket

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal expressed that he will 'wait till January' to announce the decision on his future in international cricket. Tamim retired from international cricket last July but reversed his decision after meeting Bangladesh's prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, the following day.

But a month later, he also resigned from ODI captaincy. This decision was criticised by Shakib Al Hasan, Iqbal's successor and was also out of the preceding ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Coming back to Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh opener had a press conference on November 27 and talked about his future.

Iqbal said, "After the World Cup, I felt that there should be a decision about my international future," Tamim said. "Throughout my career, I have always kept myself away from indecision. I have always been very open and clear about whatever decision I have taken in my life. I was not in the country for quite some time, so this meeting [with BCB president Nazmul Hassan] was due."

"We held the meeting today because we had to postpone it yesterday too. Today is actually not a great day to do all this. The Test match [against New Zealand] starts tomorrow. Since we had to do the meeting today, a statement afterwards was always forthcoming, so I apologise that I am doing this the day before the game. It is important for me and the Bangladesh team that there's no impact of this in the game,".

Tamim Iqbal also confirmed playing in the Bangladesh Premier League and return to pro-cricket. "I don't want to keep things hanging for a few more months. I don't want to stretch it unnecessarily," he said. "After discussing a lot of things with the president and the board, I want to respect their decision and wait till January. I could have told you my plan today, but let me play in the BPL, and then we will have another discussion for sure."

He should retire now. That will be much more graceful thing to do rather than just wait wait and wait.

From bangladesh he the best ever batsman who played the game. Should have been there in world cup squad as an opener.

Probably. Mahmudullah and Mashrafe are very likeable individuals too.

Mushfiq and Shakib have big egos even though Mushfiq seems to have calmed down in last few years.

Tamim Iqbal requests Bangladesh Cricket Board to exclude him from central contract

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to exclude him from the renewed central contact list for the upcoming calendar year, according to a BCB official.

A BCB official made the claim on December 24 (Sunday) after the 34-year-old had earlier stated he would make a call on his international career after discussing with BCB president Nazmul Hassan.

Tamim last played for Bangladesh in the three-match home ODI series against New Zealand before the 2023 World Cup in September. Following the retirement and subsequent reversal episode in July, the star batter had disagreements with the team management and captain Shakib Al Hasan, forcing him to opt out of the marquee event in India.

BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus confirmed the latest development to reporters today and said (via Cricbuzz):

"Tamim said he has his own plan and therefore he requested us not to include him in the central contract list. He (Tamim) is supposed to meet the BCB president after the national election to decide the next course of action. Till then we have to wait."

The veteran cricketer has played only one Test and 12 ODIs this year. He cleared speculations about his career last month by stating he plans to return to competitive cricket in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) that starts January 19.

The BCB will likely finalize the central contract list by December 31 after approval from the board president.

Former Bangladesh captain left out of central contract list

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced their central contract list for the year 2024 on Monday, 12 February. Veteran Bangladesh batter Tamim Iqbal was one of the biggest omissions in BCB’s central contract list for 2024.

It was a tumultuous 2023 for Tamim, who in the run-in to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 announced his retirement, reversed his decision within 24 hours, and later stepped down from the captaincy two months before the prestigious event.

Apart from Tamim Iqbal, Ebadot Hossain, Afif Hossain, and Mosaddek Hossain too miss out on a central contract.

Not surprising that he didn't receive a contract. He is finished.

He should take up commentary or something (was a commentator in the recent BD-NZ series).

Former Bangladesh captain talks possible return to national side

Tamim Iqbal has revealed his plans of potentially coming back into the Bangladesh National Team with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup fast approaching.

Former Bangladesh skipper and opening batter Tamim Iqbal has stated that the circumstances of his return ‘have to be right’ if he has to play for Bangladesh again at the international level in a press conference after winning the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

"I would like to say one thing clearly. For me to come back, a lot of things have to be right otherwise there's no point for me to just come back and play," Tamim said.

Last year, in July, Tamim announced his retirement from cricket during the home ODI series against Afghanistan just a few months before the start of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. However, he reversed his decision after an intervention from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Ahead of the World Cup, Tamim excluded himself by being unavailable for selection and didn’t take part in the tournament. He last featured for Bangladesh in the ODI format against New Zealand in September 2023.

"I am at a stage of my career where I would probably play for another two years. So I need to tell them such things, and since I did not have a final talk with them, it won't be appropriate for me to comment here."

"I haven't spoken with him (new chief selector) yet. I was in communication with Jalal bhai (Jalal Yunus). I was available for a talk, but unfortunately, we didn't get the opportunity. I will be travelling abroad tomorrow morning, and hopefully, after I return, we will sit," he said.

Tamim continues to play in the franchise leagues and captains the side Fortune Barishal in the BPL, where he led them to the title and finished as the leading run-getter in the latest season with 492 runs.

Mushfiqur Rahim, who announced his retirement from T20Is in 2022, plays for the same side. Tamim believes if Mushfiqur were to come out of retirement, the Bangladesh side would ‘benefit’ with the T20 World Cup lined up in June.

"If he (Mushfiqur) decides to make a comeback .., there are several examples of legendary cricketers who played cricket after coming back from retirement and the way he batted if he decides to make a comeback (in T20Is), it will benefit Bangladesh, and nothing can be better than that," he concluded.

Now, is it the closed end for Tamim? Or, after the regime change, can we see him in the Bangladesh jersey again?

Faruque wants Tamim to continue cricket for two to three years

Faruque Ahmed, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), believes opener Tamim Iqbal has the ability to continue playing cricket, as he still has two or three years left as a cricketer.

Tamim skipped the 2023 ODI World Cup and has been away from cricket since, largely due to his indifference with the cricket board. He was supposed to discuss his issues with the then-BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon, but before that, Papon had gone into hiding due to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.

Recently, Tamim was seen at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium when Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan visited. Tamim accompanied him and was introduced to the BCB officials.

"I will have to talk to him [Tamim]. He is a very sensible boy. I feel that he is one of the best from Bangladesh," Faruque said. "Personally, if you ask me, I would want him to play for two-three more years. But that doesn't mean it will happen. He will take his decision. We will have to see what his fitness is like."

Faruque also thinks the ODI format will suit Tamim best at this moment, as Test cricket requires huge mental and physical fitness. "We have to see what's his priority. I think Test will be difficult for him at this stage, but it's good if it's ODIs. Whatever he does, it's good if he can play."

Faruque said he would be happy if Tamim wants to join the cricket board. "If he comes to the board, I will be very happy. He has leadership qualities, and if guys like him come [to the board], we can do something good."

In an interview with the local Indian sports media, Tamim Iqbal shared:

“The way I finished, it wasn’t pleasant. So, for me to come back and play, I need to have a purpose.”

“I am not someone who would come back for the heck of it and then play just four or five games.”

“What is the point? Everybody says, ‘Come back, we want you’, but if I turn up for five games, will that help Bangladesh cricket? If there is a proper plan in terms of what they want to do and achieve, then I can think about it and we can talk accordingly.”

“Now you are talking about the Champions Trophy, where you hardly have four to five ODIs and there are three in the West Indies.”

“But then, it’s a different thing if they (the BCB) tell me that we want to win the Champions Trophy or at least we want to qualify for the semifinals, and this will probably be the last tournament that the three or four senior players would play regardless of whatever the differences are and that the BCB will fix it. This is the way to approach people.”

“You can have bad relationships, or there could be differences with people, but when it comes to the national interest, everybody should be one and there should not be any vindictiveness. Unfortunately, that happened.”

“I’m a very emotional person and whatever happened to me during those days, I did not take it nicely and decided to step away.”

Really liked him in comm box...calm and composed voice and seems like a humble man. Much better than Athar Ali Khan.

Tamim seeks time to decide on national team return

According to the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Faruque Ahmed, a player should be considered available unless he announces retirement. His statement indicates that the BCB is interested to have Tamim in the squad. But what does Tamim want?

At this point, the national team selectors held a meeting with Tamim at the Fortune Barishal’s team hotel in Sylhet on Wednesday.

Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu later revealed that Tamim requested for some time to make a decision. The opener, who has been out of the national team for a long period, will consult with his family before making a final call.

That's hardly high praise. You could pick someone off the street and put them in the comms. box and they would probably be better than Athar Ali Khan

Bangladesh opener calls time on international career

Opening batter Tamim Iqbal has announced his retirement from international cricket, having made 387 appearances across formats for Bangladesh.

Iqbal wrapped up his career with 15,192 runs for Bangladesh, the second-most after Mushfiqur Rahim.

Announcing his retirement on Facebook, Tamim said: "I have been away from international cricket for a long time. That distance will remain. My chapter in international cricket is over. I have been thinking about this for a long time.

"Now that a big event like the Champions Trophy is coming up, I do not want to be the focus of anyone's attention, which could lead to the team losing their focus. Of course, I did not want this to happen before, too.

"Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto sincerely asked me to return to the team. There were discussions with the selection committee too. I am grateful to them for still considering me in the team. However, I have listened to my own heart."

In July 2023, Iqbal had announced his retirement, but later reversed his decision.

The 35-year-old amassed 5134 runs across 70 Tests, in addition to 8357 runs in 243 outings in ODIs and 1758 runs across 78 T20Is.

His last international outing came against New Zealand in September 2023.

Long time servent of BD cricket. Had the talent to achieve more than he achieved.

He practically retired a long time ago. Even started to do commentary.

I guess this is the official announcement.

No conflict of interest, insists Tamim Iqbal on dual club involvement

Tamim Iqbal's involvement with both Mohammedan Sporting Club and Gulshan Cricket Club has raised questions about a potential conflict of interest.

However, the former Bangladesh captain remains adamant that his dual role does not present any issues.

Since retiring from international cricket, Tamim has been preparing for a new chapter as a cricket organiser while continuing to play domestic cricket. His journey into administration took a significant step forward when he, along with Fortune Barishal owner Mizanur Rahman, invested in Gulshan Cricket Club. Despite his financial involvement, Tamim has maintained that he is not the club's owner, merely a sponsor facilitator.

Tamim, who will captain Mohammedan in the upcoming Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, dismissed suggestions of a conflict of interest. He questioned, "What's the problem here? If I get out early against Gulshan, will you think I did it on purpose?"

He further clarified, "I am not the owner of Gulshan Cricket Club. I have only helped secure sponsorship for them. I do not see any conflict of interest here." Tamim urged critics to view the situation positively, noting that without sponsors like him, 15-20 players might not receive their salaries.

Conflict of interest has long been a debated topic in Bangladeshi cricket. Past examples include Khaled Mahmud Sujon, who served as a coach in the Dhaka Premier League and Bangladesh Premier League while also holding a director's position at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon's role at Beximco, a company with vested interests in domestic cricket, also drew scrutiny over potential conflicts.

Tamim's connection with Gulshan Cricket Club came shortly after he was elected president of the Chattogram division's Cricketers' Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB). With the new season starting on 4 march at BKSP, Tamim's Mohammedan Sporting Club will play their first match against none other than Gulshan Cricket Club.

The experienced opener hopes his involvement in cricket administration will contribute positively to the game, but his dual roles continue to spark debate.

One of Bangladesh's greatest, he's their second-highest run-scorer in international cricket!

Happy birthday, Tamim Iqbal 🎉

Happy bday TI.

Just turned 36. Still had few years left in him. BD missed his experience and quality at the top of the order last two years. I reckon he could’ve played till 2027CWC. There’s still opening slot issues for BD in all formats especially odis.

Good decent bat. Probably the most well spoken and educated member of his team. Wish him well for the future.

Indeed he is. That’s because he is the only one from the 2006/2007 batch who came from a well off background, and went to an English Medium school. Amongst the few only cricketers in BD history which came from an English medium background, till date.

Form differs and varies, but I’d say he wasn’t one that got easily complacent like most of them cricketers do. Most of them are easily satisfied coming from humble backgrounds, their goal is to earn money, make their family proud, build new house and get married and live happily. But, Mashrafe, Mushy, Shakib, Tamim, Riyad - the fab 5 had different mentalities from what is standard in BD cricketers. Hence why they lasted that long.

HBD. Decent player and a very decent person. Of all the BD players i have met, this guy was the most humble.
