Shakib Al Hasan will lead Bangladesh's 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023, beginning 30 August.

Shakib was recently named the new Bangladesh captain after Tamim Iqbal stepped down from the post last week.

Bangladesh have included uncapped opener Tanzid Tamim in their squad, while batter Shamim Hossain receives his maiden ODI call-up.

22-year-old Tanzid, who scored three half-centuries in the Emerging Asia Cup, has been rewarded for his consistent performances and in the absence of Tamim Iqbal provides Bangladesh with an opening option.

Meanwhile, Shamim, who has featured fairly regularly in T20Is since his debut in July 2021 will now get a chance to showcase his skills in the 50-over format.

All-rounder Mahedi Hasan makes a comeback after being out of the ODI set-up since March 2021.

Veteran batter Mahmudullah continues to be out of contention along with Taijul Islam and Rony Talukdar, who were part of the ODI series against Afghanistan last month but have also been left out.

However, Taijul has been named the standby players' list alongside Saif Hasan and Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

Bangladesh will play opening game their opening game of the Asia Cup on 31 August against Sri Lanka in Pallekele.

Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Litton Das, Tanjid Hasan Tamim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mamhud, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Shamim Hossain, Afif Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Ebadot Hossain, Mohammad Naim

Standby – Taijul Islam, Saif Hasan, Tanzim Hasan Sakib

Have to be honest, with Bangladesh, everytime we say they have strong squad, they fail to live up to expectations!

Fast bowler Ebadot Hossain has been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup with an injury and has been replaced with an uncapped pacer.

Shakib named captain for Bangladesh's Asia Cup squad
Bangaldesh had announced their 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 10 days ago, naming Shakib Al Hasan as the new captain.

Ebdaot, who was a part of the initial squad, sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during Bangladesh's ODI series against Afghanistan last month.

After assessment, it was found out that the right-armer will need at least six weeks of rehabilitation and with the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup less than two months away, the BCB do not want to risk aggravating Ebadot's injury.

“Ebadot had undergone six weeks of rehab following the injury. We have had multiple MRIs done during this time and the reports suggest that his ACL is still a concern and requires further management. Therefore, he misses out on the Asia Cup," BCB Chief Sports Physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury said.

“Considering the importance of the Bangladesh team’s next major event, which is the ICC World Cup in October, the BCB is committed to exploring every safe medical option available for getting Ebadot back to full fitness and playing as early as possible, including consultation and treatment overseas."

The BCB National Selection Panel has chosen 20-year-old uncapped pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib as Ebadot's replacement.

The youngster was a part of Bangladesh's victorious squad of the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2020 and was impressive in the recently concluded ACC Emerging Men’s Asia Cup, taking nine wickets in three games.

Four other players in the squad were also part of the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup winning team – Towhid Hridoy, Shoriful Islam, Shamim Hossain, and Tanzid Hasan Tamim.

Revised Bangladesh squad for Asia Cup: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Litton Kumer Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Naim Sheikh, Shamim Hossain, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Tanzim Hasan Sakib

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan stated that his side wasn’t looking at Asia Cup as a preparatory ground for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The Tigers have had a mixed run in the ODI format over the last year or so. In the 2022/23 season, they won the ODI series against India (2-1) and Ireland (2-0) at home, and lost the series against England by a narrow margin of 1-2.

In the ongoing season, they won 2-0 against Ireland away from home before being humbled by a spirited Afghanistan side (2-1) at home. Further, they were rocked by former skipper Tamim Iqbal quitting the sport in July before making a U-turn, and then quitting the ODI captaincy due to a back injury in August.

Veteran all-rounder Shakib was eventually named as the captain.

Speaking to the reporters for the first time alongside coach Chandika Hathurusingha, Shakib spoke at length about his team’s strategy ahead of the Asia Cup and the World Cup.

He stated that Bangladesh were looking at the Asia Cup and the World Cup as two different tournaments, adding that good or bad form in the former wouldn’t necessarily imply a good or bad showing in the latter.

"You cannot think of the World Cup with the Asia Cup because they are two different tournaments," Shakib said.

"Yes, if we can do well and develop as a good team in Asia Cup, in that case we have some good chance to do well in the World Cup and from that point of view Asia Cup is important.

“But it is not like if we do badly in the Asia Cup will imply that there is no chance for us in the World Cup nor if we do great will suggest that our chances in the World Cup will increase substantially.

He added that the side would begin looking at the World Cup only after the Asia Cup had concluded.

“Now the whole plan is based on the Asia Cup and the preparation and team is prepared accordingly. When we finish the Asia Cup, the World Cup will come and we will think about it at that point of time. Now we are thinking only about Asia Cup and more precisely we are only thinking about Afghanistan, Sri Lanka game.”

Bangladesh coach Hathurusingha was in agreement with Shakib.

"Definitely, our aim is to qualify for the second round first," Hathurusingha said. "We are playing in Sri Lanka against Sri Lanka. They're a very good team at home. And then, we are playing Afghanistan in Pakistan and lately, they played here and they won the series.

"So, there are big challenges but we are up for it."

Bangladesh begin their campaign in Asia Cup against Sri Lanka at Pallekele on 31 August.

Bangladesh’s goal needs to be to kick out Afghanistan & SL and become the third best team in Asia.

They have been on the downhill for a while now.

Litton Das ruled out of Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh announce replacement

Litton has been ruled out of Asia Cup 2023 after he was unable to recover from a viral fever. He did not travel to Sri Lanka for Bangladesh's opening match.

Bangladesh was dealt a significant blow on the opening day of the Asia Cup 2023, as star wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das has been ruled out for the entire duration of the tournament.

Litton has been ruled out of the 2023 Asia Cup after he was unable to recover from a viral fever. He did not travel to Sri Lanka for Bangladesh's opening match in Pallekele.

"The National Selection Panel of BCB has named 30-year-old fellow right-hander Anamul Haque Bijoy as Litton’s replacement," the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in an official statement.

Anamul Haque has played 44 ODIs and has scored 1254 runs which include three hundreds. His last ODI appearance for Bangladesh was in December last year against India. He is due to arrive in Sri Lanka to join the Bangladesh team later on Wednesday.

The Chairman of the National Selection Panel, Minhajul Abedin, commented on replacing Das with a like-to-like replacement: “He (Anamul) has been among the runs in domestic cricket and we have continued to monitor him in the Bangladesh Tigers programme. He was always in our consideration."

“Due to Litton’s unavailability, we needed a top-order batter who could keep wicket and Anamul got the nod” the BCB said.

Bangladesh will begin their Asia Cup campaign against tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka on Thursday in Pallekele, Kandy.

Bangladesh Asia Cup Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (Captain), Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Naim Sheikh, Shamim Hossain, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Anamul Haque Bijoy.

Very similar to the Sri lanka winning world cup thread however unlike Sri lanka, ik 100% bangaldesh won't win world cup.

But what are their chances for the Asia cup? They nearly upset Pakistan in 2011 for the Asia cup, and best India back then. They also recently defeated India (In some matches) in the odi series and unlike Sri Lanka they aren't plagued with injuries and are well settled.

Nazmul Hassan Papon, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), was surprised to learn that opener Liton Das is going to fly to Pakistan to join the Asia Cup team.

"First of all, I am not aware that Liton is going to Pakistan today. I did not hear it. I just inquired about his update today. If he goes to Pakistan, then I was supposed to know it," Papon told reporters on Monday.

Asia Cup 2023: Bangladesh’s Liton Das declared fit, set to join squad in Pakistan

Bangladesh received a boost to its Asia Cup campaign when batter Liton Das was declared fit to play on Monday and was immediately drafted into the squad, the chief selector said.

“Liton is fit now, he will travel to Pakistan tonight to join the squad,” Minhajul Abedin told AFP.

Liton missed Bangladesh’s two group matches due to a fever and was replaced by Anamul Haque.

Bangladesh lost its opening match against Sri Lanka by five wickets on Thursday but bounced back strongly on Sunday to beat Afghanistan by 89 runs.

It is refreshing to see Bangladesh win. They are the third team I support after Pakistan & England.

Bangladesh's top run-getter from Asia Cup 2023 Najmul Hossain Shanto has been ruled out of the tournament with an injury.

Shanto was plagued with a left hamstring discomfort during his knock of 104 against Afghanistan in Lahore on Sunday, 3 September.

An MRI the next day confirmed a muscle tear and Shanto was advised rest by the BCB medical team to preserve him for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, which is just a month away.
"The player had complained of hamstring pain during batting and could not field. We had an MRI scan done confirming a muscle tear," National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.

"As a precaution, Shanto will not take any further part in the tournament and will be returning home to start rehab and prepare for the World Cup."

No replacement has been announced yet. However, the return of Litton Das after recovering from a fever will be a huge boost to the team.

Bangladesh have enjoyed mixed success in the Asia Cup so far. They started their campaign with a loss against Sri Lanka but followed that up with a big 89-run win over Afghanistan. With a good NRR to boast, the team is through to the Super Four stage.

Shanto has been Bangladesh's most prolific run-getter in the tournament. He was the top-scorer in the first match, a patient 89 against Sri Lanka giving his team something to bowl at. He followed that up with a brilliant century against Afghanistan, helping Bangladesh to their third-highest total in Men's ODIs.

Bangladesh are playing a preparatory three-match ODI series against New Zealand just before the World Cup. They begin their World Cup campaign on 7 October against Afghanistan in Dharamsala.

The Tigers are yet to announce their World Cup squad.

Shakib Al Hasan speaking after his side's abysmal batting performance against Pakistan in the Super 4 game in the Asia Cup:

"We lost early wickets in the start, and we played some ordinary shots. On a wicket like this, we shouldn't lose four wickets in the first ten overs but it happens. Our partnership [for the fifth wicket] was good, thought we needed to bat seven or eight more overs. Very poor batting display on a surface like this, but we have to move on to the next one"

BD is missing Shanto badly. They are almost ready to compete against good teams. They just need positivity in their batting. Also, Shakib is done - his reflexes are down now. He needs to go.

Part of me will he glad when Shakib retires because then there’s no excuses. New guns have to think differently. He has too much credit in the bank hence why wont be criticised as much for bad captaincy or cricket. So post 2023 world cup times might be dark but BD will head towards a new direction.

Reflexes are ok he did hit well in afghan match but his game awareness still poor despite playing million of years of cricket. Senior or junior it’s just not in BD cricketing dna to understand match situations.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan expressed concern over his team's below-par performance in the batting department in recent months.

Since the start of this year, Bangladesh have so far played 16 ODIs: Won 7; Lost 7; No Result 2. They lost a three-match home series to England by a 2-1 margin, won both home and away series against Ireland 2-0 respectively, and lost to Afghanistan at home 2-1 in July.

In the ongoing Asia Cup, they have tasted defeat in three out of their four encounters so far – twice against Sri Lanka and once against Pakistan – and in all three losses, they were bowled out by the opposition. Only once did they manage to cross the 300 mark, in the win against Afghanistan where they posted a strong 334/5 thanks to twin centuries from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto.

In Saturday's Super Four game against Sri Lanka at the Asia Cup, chasing 258, Bangladesh were bundled out for 236. None of their batters managed to cross 30 apart from youngster Towhid Hridoy, who made a fighting 82.

"Our batting is going downwards for the last six months (in ODIs) since the series against England and later Afghanistan, now in this tournament and we need to work on it," Shakib said after last night's loss against Sri Lanka.

"We are concerned with our batting and we need to see those areas and work on it so that we can rectify those areas. This tournament before the World Cup will be hugely beneficial because we need to have a reality check," he added.

Shakib also shed light on Bangladesh's ODI performance, emphasizing their strength in bilateral assignments while acknowledging the need for improvement in big tournaments.

"We always play well in bilateral series and you cannot say we are a bad team but our big test is taken in this kind of tournament where we don't perform extraordinarily.

Reflecting on Bangladesh's past World Cup performances, in which they have won three games in each edition since 2011, he continued, "We won three matches in 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019 World Cup so people can say a lot of things but when we have a reality check usually we fail. It is good that the tournament [Asia Cup] was played before the World Cup and everyone will think how we can solve this problem and only after that can we do better.

"We don't have history because we have not succeeded (in big tournaments) though we played two or three finals in Asia Cup and if we could win it would have been better but we are always a promising side."

Bangladesh will kick off their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on 7 October at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.

"Mushfiqur has informed us that his wife is still recovering, and he needs to be by her side and with their children at this time. We fully understand his situation and have decided to permit him to skip the game," BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Mohammed Jalal Yunus said in a statement.

Mushfiqur to miss the Friday game vs India
