I have been having some disusscions with Abhilash93 and Acricketfan on another thread regarding the wicket keeping situation with Team India right now.

Almost everyone would agree that Saha has not lived up to the standards we would expect him to. Is a very good keeper, however, his batting at 7 does not inspire much confidence. It would be fair to say, he got enough chances.

Having said that, I went back to check the 2015/16 Ranji season, to figure out which keeper-batsman stood out.

Naman Ojha is the clear leader.
Surprised to see Aditya Tare as well.
Saha has done decently in the limited games he played?

Would like to throw this out for discussion as to who do you think should be Team India's keeper-batsman for 2016/17 season?

IMO, I would go with Ishan Kishan. He is young and would be one to invest for the future.

Following are the stats for 2015/16 season

Robin uthappa has impressed me for sometime, but think he is more suited to LOI formats, Saha has been regular in tests for a while doubt they will change

Give more time to Saha. He is ideal for tests.

If he fails then make KL play at 6 and give him gloves.

Saha is >31 years. Don't think there is much cricket left in him. May be three years at best. We all know how fit Dhoni is but even he is struggling at 34.

KL doesn't even keep wickets for KA in domestic cricket. CM Gautam does. We need a keeper who can hang on to every half chance that come in as we all know how good our bowlers are at (not) producing them.

Exactly. Agree with you 100%

Ishan Kishan, Dwiwedi (UP), and Samson would be my pick for the long run, i.e. when they are ready and after Ojha/Saha/Karthik retire.

Uttapa is a part time keeper, shouldn't be anywhere near Indian team as a keeper, will drop crucial catches in crunch situations

It'll have to be Saha.

We've invested a few series in him - he will come good sooner rather than later.

We haven't invested a lot, we can still pull out, he has not future, time to invest in something better :msd

Saha is the only complete package we have...
1. Best keeper in country.
2. many tough inning for WB in Ranji.
3. Age is non issue IMO. Every player has his shelf life. Many a player have started their career well into their 30's. If he gives us 5 to 6 good years then that's more than enough time for a real new talent to show itself.

Saha is not a test class keeper and the fact that he is almost 32 means that we should not be persisting with him.

Nothing against him, but he is just not good enough.

Regarding Ishan, he is too raw. Needs to wait for at least 3 more years.

Naman Ojha himself is almost 33 so no point of playing him as well.

In my opinion, the timing is perfect for Samson to make his debut.

Saha is not test class batsman/wk.

Posters keep doubting Saha's batting abilities and he keeps proving them wrong. An average of 112 in the NZ series and now the match winning Irani knock.

Agreed he came back in an epic fashion with that Irani knock and I am happy to be proved wrong. He is light years better than PP in terms of keeping abilities.

I guess you are the only one here who has never been proved wrong. I look up to you!

Saha is good. But we must start investing for future and future is rishabh pant

What happened to Samson? Along with Zol and Chand, he has been the most hyped upcoming Indian talent over the last 4-5 years, at least on PP. None of them seems to be close to breaking into the Indian team. In fact, Zol hasn't played a F/C match for nearly two years now.

I believe my brain just stopped working due to an inflated ego :(

No more looking up to me anymore :)

Sorry if I came across as being arrogant.

Samson struggling in domestics for quite a time now.Plays good innings occasionally and randomly. He will be alright eventually. He has the talent .
Zol is not good enough.Better batsman available than him.
Chand is vinay Kumar of batting. He would perform good in domestics but doesn't seem cut out for internationals
My two cents....

lost focus, temperamental issues, also not a good keeper, thinks stardom already got in his heads. there's is some issues with him and Kerala Cricket Board during Ranji season due to his attitude.

As I said one year ago only complete wk/bat we have atm.

New talent like Pant, Ishan Kishan etc aren't ready for Tests yet. Until then we can extract 3-4 years out of Saha yet.

No dude we cannot waste talent like Pant saying he is not ready.Nobody is ready until he is actually facing the demon face to face. He is not a talent to be wasted because he is not ready. No point asking him to play more domestics.Get him in already. His wicket keeping will improve by playing internationals impetuously.

Cool down man. We have a system in place. And he is on radar and is being very closely monitored. Have you seen him keep? He is quick but not overly athletic and is yet to attain level of keeping skills you need to play tests as wk for India.

Hehe. I am overexited about his prospect because I can see he being the next big thing for Indian cricket. System is for the usuals.Special talent needs to be fast-tracked. About his keeping he was decent in ranji. His fitness is an issue for not being athletic. Dhoni was not a complete WK when he became regular.
