The Batman (2022)

Exceptional filmmaking! I am a big fan of slowburn movies…so I loved this.
Pros: perfect casting, great story, beautiful cinematography & soundtrack …probably the best on screen iteration of Batman? Pattison owned the role. The movie atmosphere gives Seven/Zodiac vibes.
Cons: one or two scenes could have been left out for better pacing. Not enough Alfred. But overall a solid 8/10.

Cannot compare this to Nolan’s work as the style and aesthetic is completely different. I do believe TDK is overrated and full of plotholes. My overall Batman movie ratings:

Batman Begins: 8/10
The Batman: 8/10
The Dark Knight: 7/10
The Dark Knight Rises: 7/10
Batman 1989: 6/10
Batman Returns: 6/10
Batman Forever: 4/10
Batman & Robin: 1/10

Thanks for saving a waste of an evening.

When I read this is as good as The Dark Knight, I knew it would be false hype. If it wasnt for the Dark Knight, I wouldnt ever consider watching another Batman movie.

Perhaps it could be worth reading about the overall critical and audience reactions to the film which have been broadly positive (and very positive in some cases), instead of just going on a post from one forum user?

Biggest exaggeration of the century :) Not surprised as your taste in movies going by other posts is :)

Well yes. I am getting more and more cynical in my old age and perhaps it's true that my taste in movies is deteriorating but honestly I found this film to be utterly atrocious...

The cast, their acting and the screenplay were all really bad.
Also I clearly wasn't the only one.
My wife, who is extrneely difficult displease when it comes to movies, hates it too and for the first time in my movie going life I found myself bonding with complete strangers as we walked out together of the cinema in disbelief at what he had just sat through.

Bhai I am not youngster myself. That’s no excuse :)

Ok ok.
I have poor taste in movies

It will be interesting too see others views here.
Two of my friends saw it last night and loved it.

I've read two reviews so far, one absolutely hated it, and one rated it highly. I guess there must be some redeeming factors depending on your taste. Me personally, I dread watching reboots of my favourite films, and The Dark Knight is one of them.It usually ends badly, although to be fair, they did a decent job with the Spiderman franchise. But it depends how good the originals are. Scream and the Nightmare on Elm Street movies were impossible to follow for example, they were just too good.

People are clinging on to TDK trilogy like it is untouchable. It’s ok to say Pattison is the best on screen Batman to date.

But I agree re reboots. The Amazing Spiderman is the most pointless remake. Garbage.

It could be a love/hate divisive kind of film.

TDK was super overrated; more so after HL died.

Batman Begins is perhaps the best batman and this is pushing it after JN’s portrayal as the Joker.

The rest of Batman movies are pathetic and reflective of the dark and sinister society we live in. How many time must we see Bruce Wayne’s parents murdered? Move on, we get it.

Superman -the original comic book hero. Bring him back to the silver screen. The rest of the superheroes went to school on him.

PS: Batman is not even a superhero, he is a Billionaire with expensive toys; cue Ironman.

What's the thoughts of those who have watched it?

TDK trilogy isn't untouchable, you just better bring something amazing if you are going to go there.

Actually, scratch that, TDK is untouchable.

All three films are brilliant. I think Batman Begins is perhaps the closer of the three to the original source material; The Dark Knight is a legendary film of course and will go down as one of the movies of the century; and Rises is a bit weaker as an end-to-end piece than the other two but is still full of great moments.

So you have made your decision based on one person’s opinion?

Reading IMMY69 reviews on other threads related to movies/films, I tend to agree with him.

Its 3 hours long, has to be a great movie for me to watch it.

Rises gets better with a second watch as well. I don't think I appreciated it as much when I watched it at the cinema, but like the rest it delivers 100% and I underrated it on first viewing. I don't like all Nolan films, but the Batman films will be his legacy.

Rises captures the zeitgeist of 2012 pretty nicely: millennialism, the post “economic crash” economy and resulting vacuum of opportunity, speculative stock markets, the Occupy movement, proposed revolutions in western liberal democracies, kangaroo courts, icy cold weather, a new weapon of mass destruction, and a sort of apocalyptic & end-of-the-world feeling to everything. It works as a historical document. Bane’s speech outside of Gotham City Hall is a bit America First and Trumpesque as well which in an ahead of its time sense I find to be quite eerie.

TDK trilogy is the best there, even Rises was ahead of its time, seeing how the world is now.

TDK is obviously the best.

But i’ll be going into the new one without expecting it to be as good TDK, I just hope it’s better than the over graphical DC movies.

Well said on DK Rises!

Billionaire with toys is considered one of the best superheros.

Dear Lord, what is this world coming to.

Batman was created as a reaction to Superman, someone who is a regular person but can still be a costumed hero. I do not see a problem with that. Ironman and Batman films have made more money than the rest so obviously a vast majority of people enjoy these characters and their films.

Hahaha. Batman is NOT a regular person; he is a Billionaire. Just goes to show how warped society really is.

Batman movies make money cos the majority live in a dark and twisted world.

This film is not an origins story and is different as in its a neo noir detective story. I am still put up by the long run time though.

I am happy to watch a 3 hr+ movie but how many times do I need to know how Bruce Wayne's parents died? Yup a dark and sinister connection attempt with modern day society. Get over it, parents die, no need to rehash.

By "regular" I meant he is a human being, he is not an alien, not a mutant, he didnt have an accident and develop any special powers that way, he is not genetically or mechanically modified, etc. (did I cover all the comic book tropes?)

Yes, he is a billionaire or millionaire playboy, who is extremely conflicted and screwed up in the head. He has a lot of demons. He is the most "humanized" of comic book heroes than the rest, which is why most people find the character interesting and why so many movies have been made on him. Superman is boring because he is so powerful he can do save everyone with one hand while knitting a sweater with the other, which is why he tends to be boring and why after the original series in the late 70s and 80s, none of the attempts to capture him on film have been too successful. Man of Steel was decent though.

Superman is the original Superhero; super powers, who does not need any toys to prove his humility and affection for the human race.

Batman is the pick for people who suffer and feel they are owed something in this world. Pathetic.

I havent seen it. but if you are afraid this would be the same old stuff as in the Keaton/Bale/Affleck films, I have read enough review to tell you its not. This is NOT an origin story, and they do not show his parents dying but how they died, well lets just say, I made the mistake of reading some spoilers on that part and thats the part of the mystery and its done very differently from the previous films, so if getting more of the same is your hold up, it should not be. Its done differently and there is actually not much action in it. Its a slow burn ala Seven/ LA confidential if you like those sort of films.

lol. Judgmental much? You are good with enjoying what you enjoy, man.

As they say whatever floats your boat, try not to take a dump on others who disagree though. Try and have a better day :)

Judgemental? You exposed yourself with the love for Batman who you have admitted is a dark and twisted character. You love Batman’s pain, says a a lot about your psychological profile.

Have you Clockwork Orange on 4k? Just wondering given you relish in dark pain.

Agreed, Batman has been rinsed and repeated because most of the world can relate to personal suffering.

I also happen to enjoy Grumpy Smurf, the dark twisted pained conflicted inner me makes me love such stuff, therefore...

carry on, sir.. I am grabbing a soda and popcorn! LMAO

You like Batman cos he is rich, cos he suffers in- pain, cos he seeks retribution. As I said, a reflection of society. Tsk tsk.

Last time I had a similar discussion was almost 4 decades ago. Dude, grow up. Why are you so bitter? Nahi dekhni to na dekh, bhai ja jaa ker apna kaam ker, awaein damagh ki lassi bana raha hai for simply posting a comment about a stupid comic book character.

Fine, bro, superman is the shiznit, he is the proper badass and batman is ridiculous. Any superhero who hangs out on rooftops at night with young boys in tights has to be demented. So does someone who wears red underwear over blue tights but if you like him so much, HE IS DA MAN!

SMH.. THIS pandemic has really screwed some people up, they just want to bite at everyone and everything for no good reason now!

The fact you invoked the pandemic proves my point.

The only superhero who is bitter is Batman. Fact.

Happy seeking retribution.

:)

Grumpy Smurf was supposedly Grumpy cuz Smurfette had supposedly been intimate with all the other smurfs in the village except him, did you know that?

Pattison is an idiot. He should not have taken this role because Grump Smurf here does not enjoy Batman. He should have played Superman... So lets all pooh pooh Pattison and throw garbage at him.

Get your facts straight.

Do not confuse Gargamel with a grumpy Smurf.

The fact you have now switched to Smurfs is a testament to how Batman has screwed your mind.

Joker.

It’s only a comic superhero guys.. Keanu Reeves is the new animated one lol

Did you know Gargamel thought he could cook the smurfs into little blue pills someone told him were good for a very embarrassing affliction that prevented him from courting t he widow Mrs. Kent the next town over. That Gargamel was actually Grumpier than Grumpy smurf! lol

Someone thinks our affinity to watch batman stuff makes us really dark and conflicted men. Do you feel like strangling little cute puppies with your bare hands sometimes? You should watch more Superman, and try to be a little more happy and gay!

Are you referring to Mitsi pills?

What Mrs Kent has to do with Smurfs just proves my point again. You are all over the place. What would Batman do? Lol.

Mine too, :)

So are you boycotting The Batman film? Like people are boycotting Russians? Will you refuse to even watch any other films in theaters just cuz they are showing The Batman? Are you going to write a letter to the studio and demand they pull this film out of circulation and immediately apologize and pay damages to you for hurting your feewings? Are you going to sue them for not making a Superman film instead? Do you run around your backyard in your read underwear over your tights? Do you call your right hand Lois?

Nice to see to see you now invoke the Russians now, at least you now how moved on from the Smurfs. The inner dark hatered has been exposed.

Should duly be noted, Batman also wears tights, if you are old enough to remember.

Right so I’m not an anorak sort of fan of any of this stuff, and some of the below might be wrong (correct me if it is), but…

It’s not just Batman.

Superman’s parents on Krypton died as well, and then his adoptive father on Earth also.

Peter Parker was raised by Aunt May and Uncle Ben, presumably because he was an orphan? And Uncle Ben dies as well, partly because of a mistake made by Peter himself.

The parents / father / mentor figure dying is often a key element of the hero’s own development and motivation, it’s a fairly typical trope of a superhero story.

They are all the same, tragic super heroes who wear capes and underwear over their tights and other colorful costumes to keep children interested and we are all being children just like they want us to be and arguing over who is better.

We really should find a better outlet for all this energy! Haha.

Depicting the death is only very common with Batman. The latest Spiderman trilogy starts off with aunt May, but doesn’t decent into scenes showing how the uncle died. We all get it, aunt May is a widow. Hence are more uplifting viewing and better on screen time spent.

Batman on the other hand, must we be reminded of his parents died at every juncture; only if the movie attempts to connect with the poor dark souls in society - plenty of them!

Superman is the deadest super hero.

If thats the greatest scene then I'm glad I haven't watched any of this rubbish.

Well, Superman was the original super hero, and good to know considering there were only 2 other Superman movies since the 70s.

Only the pure hearted will understand Superman.

Stick with CGI.

Poor old Batman. Billionaire, parents died, gets his butler to wipe his teeth, feel sorry for him, and his fans support him in seeking revenge.

You have peasants on PP criticising wealth and revenge, but no, a man wears a mask, black tights, has a slave, is a master, soaked in wealth, and he’s the epitome of a superhero, supported by hypocrites - oh hoe society is duped and brainwashed. Baa baa!

Man of Steel was a pretty solid Superman film.

Michael Shannon superb as Zod.

I'm big superman fan.
Watched the 1977 film in the cinema and watching him fly for the first time was a very special moment.

Back to topic.

The Batman.
Utterly rubbish

Michael Shannon superb as Zod.

MoS was a super flop because Superman does not kill (Zod was killed by SM).

Richard Donner’s Zod (Stamp), Lex (Hackman), Kal-El (Reeves), Jor-El (Brando) was the stuff of legends.

Meanwhile Bat-fans are critical on who who plays a man behind the mask. Irony.

I thought it was a brilliant movie. The story is very gripping and keeps you engaged till the end.

Goosebumps everytime. Reeves is the perfect Superman.

Snyder completely ruined it with he’s grumpy iteration.

He got the idea people are getting Grumpier and Grumpier … especially the Superman ******* who run around in red capes and underwear and red socks.

Loved it. Loved the atmosphere, how grounded it is, the Blade Runner/Se7en vibes, the soundtrack, the respect to certain storylines from the comics.

I preferred the fight scenes infinitely to the Dark Knight trilogy, as much as I like it.

Cinematography was beautiful.

Could it have knocked off a few minutes? Yes, probably, but I loved being immersed in the world, can't wait to see where they go in the sequels and see Batman evolve into the hero we know he becomes.

Excellent movie but the interactions between Catwoman and Batman were terrible.

But this is really close to the cartoon series, Villains were excellent!

Actually I don’t want to spoil but the first paragraph you wrote is an essential part of the movie.

Colin Farrell to reprise his role as The Penguin in new Batman spin-off TV series

Farrell will also serve as executive producer of the TV show which is due to air on US streaming service HBO Max.

Batman star Colin Farrell is to reprise his role as the Penguin in a new spin-off TV series.

The actor, 45, will play the DC Comics villain for a new series on US streaming service HBO Max.

Few details are yet known about the show, but it will be executive produced by Farrell himself, alongside Batman director Matt Reeves, Dylan Clark, and Lauren LeFranc.

In a social media post, HBO Max said: "Every story has a beginning. @DCComics The Penguin (working title), a new Max Originals limited series starring Colin Farrell, is coming to HBO Max."

Producer Lauren LeFranc tweeted: "Honoured and excited. This is gonna be wild!"

When transformed into the comic book villain, Farrell is barely recognisable as he wears prosthetics.

He previously told PA news agency: "Just being buried… being anonymous beneath all that make-up kind of freed me up in a way I'd never experienced before. I had no fears about how I was being seen or portrayed."

The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the superhero and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, has made more than $300 million worldwide since its release earlier this month, Forbes reported.

The Penguin is one of the most iconic villains from the Batman comic books and is typically known for his top hat, monocle, and collection of deadly umbrellas.

Before Farrell, the character has been played by actors including Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito and Robin Lord Taylor.

Even better on second viewing. Pattinson is the best on screen Batman ever.

Yup. The premise of Batman is revenge, which the majority of humans can relate with. Batman connects with the darker aide of humanity thus its fans are full of hate and retribution. This is why Batman sells.

Yet we got morons worried about Trump and Covid.

Amazing but true.

Liberals love Batman because the character represents their lefty alter ego. Liberals spend day and night denouncing violence, promoting economic equality, AND, supporting social justice.

Yet here we have Batman who is the complete opposite and gets the liberal vote.

Just as a bat is blind, so are the liberal supporters who cling to this dark and pathetic character.

Amazing. People forget that the scene is not just the beginning of a montage, but the beginning of Superman as a superhero.

Snyder deserves a bata chapal for his awful Superman Return. Barring the aeroplane scene, the rest as Superman would say, is garbage.

I’m going again as well but not for Pattinson, just loved the mystery aspect and camerawork .

Very motherless brooklyn vibe

You mean Bryan Singer

Actually Brandon Routh is a better Superman than one facial expression Henry Caville.

Yep, on point as always. It’s certainly the most authentic live action adaptation of the character in the comics, taking great inspiration from year one and the long halloween. Gotham looked absolutely stunning, visually alone it’s the best looking bats movie so good job by the cinematography guys, the action was absolutely gripping and you could tell there was a great degree of realism to it given how they shot those scenes with practical effects. Pattinson is definitely the best actor to have played the character, he nailed the role really well, this Bats was in his early years and he reflected that on the emotion side of things and especially some of the reckless decisions, there was a lot more vulnerability because of that but some of his darker outlooks hadn’t peaked which bough us full circle with the opening prologue and during the finishing stretch (without going into detail). Villains were certainly great, especially the Riddler and his psychological warfare, it evoked some elements from David Fincher movies

My biggest criticism is the runtime, 3 hours wasn’t necessary and there was a fair chunk of filler, mostly to set up the spinoffs. And it affected pace and clarity at times with the narrative. Overall though, this is the first attempt at actually getting the detective side of things right and close to the source material as much as possible and it was a great in that sense but defo something to build on, it’s very hard to compare it stylistically as neo noir to other Batman movies though.
