What's new

The Commonwealth Games, Birmingham (July 28 - August 8)

Adam Peaty says he has his "spark" back after powering to a first Commonwealth 50m breaststroke title in what he says is his final race at the Games.

Having missed out on a 100m medal on Sunday as he recovers from a broken foot, the English swimmer had said he was "not bothered" about adding the shorter title to his collection.

That did not appear to be the case as he thrashed the water in celebration.

"I had two options this morning - I either fight or don't fight," he said.

"Everyone who knows me, knows I fight."

Peaty certainly looked ready to fight as he entered the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, beating his chest twice before raising his hand to acknowledge the goosebump-inducing noise from the crowd.

The 27-year-old jumped up and down behind his block, before eventually the shouts of "come on Peaty" subsided and silence fell.

Initially, after touching first in 26.76 seconds, Peaty only gave an understated nod of his head.

Before the final, he had said "you back a lion into a corner, they're going to bite". He looked every bit the king of the pool as his celebrations sprang to life and he climbed on the lane rope to roar at the crowd.

It was a fairly comfortable victory in the end too. Australian silver medallist Sam Williamson was 0.21 seconds back, with Scotland's Ross Murdoch - who secretly retired in December before returning to swimming - taking bronze in 27.32 seconds.

Peaty said after his 100m that he had lost his spark in the last two years and needed to take a long break before turning his attention to a third Olympic title at the 2024 Games.

The crowd's response to his victory may go some way to helping him fall back in love with the sport and he repaid their applause by throwing his cap and goggles into the stands.

"That means so much to me, because what I have been through the last five years," Peaty said.

"I lost my spark towards the beginning of the week and I have it back now. A lot of people have got to understand that I reached the bottom of the bottom yesterday and to bring myself up with the crowd in my own mind and that is the result."

Later, as he receiving his medal on the podium and lapped up the adoration of the Sandwell crowd, that spark had returned to his eyes and the smile to his face.

Peaty said he "can retire now" after completing his collection of Commonwealth titles, but added that he was "looking forward to resetting" and training over the winter.

"I am so glad I got that loss earlier in the week because these wins feel so much more alive and so much better," he concluded.

Women’s pole vault
Women’s discus

Also KJT leading heptathlon.

Dont blame Pakistani athletes. Given lack of funds & facilities - it wud be miracle if they win any medal

What about fiji/ samoa/ nuru/ sri lanka etc ?
Even they are winning some. Guess lack of encouragement towards non cricket is hurting Pak, they should start programs to create Olympians, it will give fruits 10 yrs down the line.

BIRMINGHAM: A Sri Lankan athlete and a senior official participating in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in England went missing on Tuesday following the fifth day’s events of the Games.

According to Sri Lankan media reports, a female judoka and manager of the judo team have disappeared from the Sri Lankan camp. Their names have not been revealed yet.

The female judoka lost her first-round competition yesterday and the two Sri Lankans reportedly disappeared soon after the event.

Birmingham Metropolitan Police have initiated an investigation into the matter after Sri Lankan management immediately informed the authorities about the disappearance.

Meanwhile, the Chef-de-Mission of the Sri Lankan contingent Maj. Gen (retd) Dampath Fernando obtained all passports of the Sri Lankan contingent to avoid further issues.

Many sri lankans are looking for migration right now, most probably those missing athletes would have gone missing for a better/ stable life. Sad lives :(

After winning his fight in Round of 16 against Anthony Shawn Joseph of Trinidad, Ilyas talked to Geo News and expressed high hopes for winning in a knock-out match.

All the best to the fella, it’s remarkable he got to this point with little resource or support. An absolute travesty really.

2026 CWG - as per new rules, only 2 sports -> swimming and athletics are mandatory for any games to be conducted in future. Rest 16 sports can be picked based on the convenience of host nation including Olympic sports like weight lifting/ shooting/ archery/ badminton/ wrestling which all are optional now...

Just like cricket till 2000's -> Australia and England have complete power to impose such rules. India have demanded to include shooting/ wrestling/ weight lifting at any cost. There were calls for boycott this time itself if above rule gets implemented then I guess we should.

Pakistan Shah Hussain Shah will fight for Bronze Medal in #Judo Men -90 kg against Thomas-Laszlo of South Africa around 9:00 pm.

Shah Hussain Lost Quarter Final but due to less entries he is eligible to fight for Bronze Medal.

Lol such annoying brats CW wants to keep it an all White Affair, I swear I used to think this white privilege is blown out of proportions but every single time a non white country does well in any sport they change the rules lol.

How can Wrestling not be part lol, should chuck out Swimming.(it’s a rant)

Not just that, every 2nd cwg will be hosted either in eng / aus so they get to choose 7 events of their choice for the games. I am sure they will increase swimming and cycling events and might scrap events which both eng and aus are not strong.

The issue is standard of competion. CWG is third rate sports event. Most disciplines dont have enough competitors. It leads to loads of cheap medals.

Shooting, archery, wrestling don't have enough competitors ?

In swimming, cycling except aus, eng who are the competitors ?

The hope of a medal is still alive as Nasir Iqbal and Faiza Zafar secured a win in their Mixed Doubles event of the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Nasir and Faiza beat Sri Lanka's Sinaly Chanithma and Wakeel Shamil to advance to the round of 16. After a competitive first set, which ended 11-10, the Iqbal-Faiza duo thrashed Sri Lankans in the second set by 11-5, winning the clash in straight sets.

Unfortunately, another Pakistani Mixed Doubles duo, Amna Fayyaz and Tayyab Aslam, lost their match against Meagan Best and Cumberbatch Khamal after a good performance. The Barbados duo won the match by 6-11 and 6-11 in straight sets.

Pakistan's Jehanara Nabi, who took part in Women's 400m Freestyle, clocked 4:36.87, which unfortunately couldn't help her qualify for the next stage of the swimming event.

Meanwhile, Qaiser Khan competed against New Zealand's Jason Koster in the round of 16 of the Men's 100 Kg Judo event. But the New Zealander beat Qaiser after an Ippon, which is the highest score a fighter can achieve.

In Men's 90 Kg Judo event, Shah Hussain Shah played against Australia's Harrison Cassar in the quarter-finals, and again he lost after an Ippon.

Should ban CWG in the first place. Nothing but a remnant of the colonial, racist past - dont know why countries like India, Pakistan have to associate themselves with such an event.

India might if CWG committee continues to skip shooting, wrestling next time.

So far India has been competing in these games because our athletes aren't that good enough in Asiad/ Olympics and need some showpiece event. With better participation and results in Asian/ summer Olympics plus world events, India should reach a stage to either demand few events or skip it soon.

Pakistan finally gets on the Commonwealth Games medal table as Shah Hussain Shah secures bronze in Judo 90 kg.

All these games including Olympics are just for boasting rights. If a country cannot win any medals, it means they are weaklings and not fit.
Once these games finish, nobody cares about who won what other than the near and dear of the people who actually won a medal.

It shows your clout. Post wwii, olympics are probably the only thing which shows who has more power. It's a war without a war.

In asiad it is China
In olympics it is usa vs ussr, now it is usa vs china
In cwg, it is eng vs aus

top nations do care

No wrestling powerhouse other than India. Same for shooting. So for Indians its free haul of medals

Atleast in swimming or athletics - there is decent competition from Aus / Eng / South Africa

BIRMINGHAM: After a long wait, Pakistan won its first medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Wednesday.

Shah Hussain Shah won a bronze medal for Pakistan in Judo after defeating South African Thomas-Laszlo Breytenbach in Men's -90 Kg event.

Shah entered the bronze medal bout after losing his first round earlier in the -90kg weight category.

It should be mentioned here that Shah has now won a medal at the Commonwealth Games for the second time as he had won the silver medal in the 2014 competitions in Glasgow.

The 20-year-old son of Olympic bronze medalist boxer Hussain Shah has also won two Gold medals for Pakistan in South Asian Games.

India win a medal in mens singles for the first time ever in squash in CWG history.
Def English athlete in the play off.

15th medal for India

You are wrong, Canada and Nigeria are good enough and win quite a handful of GOLD in wrestling

Aus , Singapore and Eng are all good in shooting, it is out strongest event but it's not a 1 way event. It is just a costly affair to hold this event.

AlhamdurAllah, A little lucky to get their, but we will take it haha :)

Thanks for the share :) Man is looking sharp :)

If there is no wrestling and shooting at CWG, India should definitely stay away from these games.

This is like Aus and Eng organizing a circus to see their athletes beating up former colonies.

Table Tennis
Fahad won first match 4-0 against Goyana

Can someone confirm if Ilyas Hassan Lost his boxing match- i had the stream and it stopped, but I believe he lost

Goal Pakistan, they have tied the game what a beautiful strike ( Pak 1 - Sco 1) 7 mins left in 2nd quarter

If he was playing against some one from UK judges will make him lose :)

The boxer was from Northern Ireland, but I think he was better, the boxer from northern Ireland, but if somoene can confirm that result i would appericate it, I am watching 2 streams and working and updating on Pak Passion someone give me a medal hahahaha

I expected Bangladesh to win a few medals by now. Their cupboard is empty. Pakistan with all its problems have managed to win a bronze.

Pakistan has had a decent medal tally in past and might get golds here too , BD somehow is remarkably bad at sports in general.

Murad Ali win men’s singles by 21/9 21/8
Badminton

Pak lifter seems like class apart, he is going to try 236 kilos in first attempt which will confirm GOLD for him.
Where was this guy all this while ??

NVM, just google this Pakistani lifter did participate in Asiad 2018.

Olympics/ asian games lifters are doing 450kilos to win medals so our lifters aren't good enough overall who are doing 400-420 :(

Confirmed Pakistan Boxer Ilyas Hassan did lose to Jude Gallagher of Northern Ireland scorecard shows 5-0 in favor of Jude

Nooh Dastigir Butt Take a bow Son :) Pakistan wins gold :) When Nooh lifted that weight, he lifted a whole nation, subanAllah I am in tears :)
