Yes much needed indeed. Although it seems impossible if Pakistan can beat Australia or even tie, them I think they can still qualify for Semi- Finals (Currently Australia lead South Africa 2-0) so if Australia can go on to win, that will do us a favor. But to beat or draw Australia by our team is unlikley, but one can hope haha

In 109+kg category, Nooh Butt lifted 173kg in snatch while in clean and jerk, he lifted 232kg and set another record. Overall, Butt lifted 405kg which is also a record in CWG 2022.

Following victory in CWG 2022, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Nooh Butt. In a Tweet PM said “Well done, Butt Saab.”

In the 2018 CWG, Butt won the bronze medal in the 105+kg category, while he also won a Silver medal in the weightlifting championship in CWG last year in December.

It is the second time Pakistan has won the gold medal in CWG's weightlifting event. In 2006, Shujauddin Malik won the gold medal for Pakistan in the 85kg category.

During CWG 2022, Pakistan has also won bronze medal as judoka Shah Hussain Shah downed his South African opponent.

Shah entered the bronze medal bout after losing his first round earlier in the 90kg category. This was his first ever 90kg event as the Pakistani player has always played in the 100kg category.

In the 2018 CWG, Butt won the bronze medal in the 105+kg category, while he also won a Silver medal in the weightlifting championship in CWG last year in December.

Just googled and yeah in 1962 that too when Pak was 4th.

It has 21 Golds in wrestling , shocking seems like was actually excellent in 60s.

Apparently Pak withdrew for 2 decades.

South Africa Mens team beat New Zealand Mens team in hockey by a score of 4-3 a great game it was too watch.

Last Match of Group Stage will be Pakistan vs Australia.

Pakistan if they are to advance not only have to beat Australia, but beat them by 2 goals to pass south Africa in goal difference,

Just to beat Australia would took a massive effort, and Pak would have to make close to zero mistakes, take full advantage when their able to do so, and maybe have some luck, The result which is almost certain is an Australian win, and a win by decent margin. Pak will just have to believe and try their best.

All the best to the Men in Green

Sri Lankan athletes’ passports confiscated after teammates flee Commonwealth Games

Sri Lankan athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games have been forced to turn in their passports after some of their teammates absconded amid fierce unrest back home.

Sanith Chathuranga, one of Sri Lanka’s male wrestlers, disappeared from a medical centre in Birmingham after testing positive for Covid-19, it emerged on Thursday.

Earlier this week, Chamila Dilani, a female judoka, and Asela da Silva, her coach, also fled from the Sri Lankan camp.

It is believed that the athletes could apply for asylum in the United Kingdom as Sri Lanka grapples with one of the world’s worst economic crises.

Over a quarter of Sri Lankans are in need of emergency food aid, according to the World Food Programme.

Police in Birmingham confirmed they are looking for the missing athletes while the remaining members of the 161-strong Sri Lankan contingent at the competition have been instructed to turn in their passports.

“We have asked all athletes and officials to submit their passports to our respective venue officials in all the villages after the incident,” said a Sri Lankan team spokesman.

“The police are investigating and the three cannot cross the UK borders. What has happened is really unfortunate.”

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is poised for further unrest after demonstrators said they would defy demands from police to clear the Galle Face site in the capital of Colombo by Friday evening, which has been the epicentre of nationwide anti-government protests since April.

Protesters had called for a mass demonstration on August 9 in Colombo, in an attempt to get Ranil Wickremesighe, the country’s new president, to resign.

Mr Wickremesinghe is seen as an ally of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the now deposed president who resigned on July 14 after protesters stormed the presidential secretariat and refused to leave until he stepped down.

Mr Wickremesinghe has also angered many Sri Lankans after abandoning his support for the peaceful demonstrations and launching a civil society crackdown this week.

Influential religious and student leaders who have organised protests have been beaten, arrested and placed on “no fly” lists.

Mr Wickremesinghe has warned that further unrest will delay ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout.

Bankrupt Sri Lanka owes over £39 billion to lenders but only has around £100 million in the bank, resulting in nationwide shortages of fuel, food and essential medicines.

Commonwealth Games: England's Jack Laugher and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix win diving golds

Jack Laugher and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix won the first diving titles on offer at the 2022 Commonwealth Games on a golden night for England.

Laugher, 27, successfully defended his 1m springboard title for a second time, as team-mate Jorden Houlden took bronze.

Seventeen-year-old Spendolini-Sirieix then won the women's 10m platform on her Games debut.

Her team-mate Lois Toulson took silver, upgrading from bronze from 2018.

Spendolini-Sirieix, who scored 357.50 points, had topped the leaderboard from her second dive. Toulson finished with a total of 337.30.

Laugher, who won the 1m springboard title in 2014 and 2018, scored 447.05 to finish 10 points ahead of Australia's two-time world champion Li Shixin.

He will be joined on the podium by fellow Englishman Houlden, who won bronze on his Commonwealth debut - an achievement which Laugher said was "extremely special".

"First Commonwealth Games in front of a home crowd, there's a lot of pressure," he told BBC Sport.

"He's come out there, he's pushed me and the boy from Australia all the way. He's done himself proud today and it's lovely having someone alongside me now. I couldn't think of a better person for it."

Having finished fourth in the preliminary round earlier on Thursday, Laugher was in bronze medal position after the first three dives in the final as 24-year-old Houlden impressed to go top of the standings in the early stages.

But a score of 79.90 on his fourth dive - an inward two-and-a-half somersaults in pike - catapulted three-time Olympic medallist Laugher up the leaderboard.

His experience showed as from then he posted consistently high scores to ensure daylight between himself and Li, finishing with a final dive score of 80.85 to put the gold medal out of the Australian's reach.

Laugher has struggled with his mental health in recent years, but said this performance, and the three medals he won at the World Championships earlier in the summer, showed he was back on an upwards trajectory.

"It is always a work in progress and you can see the physicality of the people I am competing against - they're all so high," he said.

"Jordan is a little bit younger than me and a very strong boy and at the top end, the physical aspect is really similar and what separates the best from the best is the physical aspect of it.

"Mental health and mental well-being has been extremely important for me. I've really struggled with it over the years but I feel like I've overcome quite a lot and obviously doing performances like this today and at the World Championships makes it all better and keep me moving forward."

Houlden landed his first major medal with a total score of 429.30.

"I feel absolutely speechless," he told BBC Sport. "Coming to my first Commonwealth Games and coming third, getting a medal - I wasn't expecting it. I am completely blown away."

KARACHI: Without a shadow of a doubt, Pakistan's current fastest man Shajjar Abbas has set all the nervousness aside as his ambition is crystal clear — winning a medal for the Pakistani nation tomorrow in Commonwealth Games 2022.

Shajjar will contest among 24 sprinters in the knock-out stage of Men's 200m at 11:09pm (PST) tomorrow (5th August) at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. While hundreds of Pakistanis will watch the race inside the stadium, millions will enjoy it on their TV screens, hoping for yet another medal for the country.

Speaking to Geo Super a night before the mega semi-final, Shajjar said he is just praying to get the strength to win a medal for Pakistan.

"Being an athlete, you have to be strong enough to control your emotions," Shajjar said when asked about being nervous.

"I don't have butterflies in my stomach. I am relaxed and fully focused. Tonight, I will just pray for strength to win medal tomorrow," shared the 22-years-old sprinter who will compete in the first semi-final race.

Weightlifter Nooh Butt won the first gold for Pakistan in Commonwealth Games 2022 on Wednesday whereas Judoka Hussain Shah bagged bronze. Shajjar aims to follow in the footsteps of his compatriots.

"It was the best-ever feeling when I saw my flag on the top," expressed Shajjar. "They both made us so proud. I hope and pray to follow them and do something for my country tomorrow," said the Kasur-hailed athlete.

Shajjar thanked Allah, his family and coach Rana Sajjad. "I am blessed to be picked to represent Pakistan at this level. My family and coach Rana Sajjad played an important role in my journey. It wasn't possible without them," he said.

"I know people are watching us in Commonwealth Games. They have expectations from us. Their support and prayers will definitely help us shine in front of the world," he signed off.

Having claimed a weightlifting gold and judo bronze, Pakistan is expected to secure some more medals as national wrestlers will start their Commonwealth Games journey here at the Coventry Arena on Friday (today).

The country’s premier wrestler and defending champion Mohammad Inam (86kg), Youth Olympics bronze medallist Inayatullah (65kg) and heavyweight grappler Zaman Anwar (125kg) will vie for medals in what could be gruelling contests to be held on Friday (today).

India and Canada are fielding packs of fine wrestlers but Pakistan also has boys with killer instincts who can do anything on a given day. However, it also will depend on draws. If strong India, Pakistan and Canada are drafted in one group then Pakistan may face problems.

The draws were scheduled to be held on Thursday at 9pm PST and the bodyweight will be held on Friday (today) at 11am PST.

National wrestlers were scheduled to undergo training at 11pm PST Thursday.

As it will be a two-day event so on Saturday (tomorrow), rookie Ali Asad (57kg), Mohammad Sharif Tahir (74kg) and the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Tayyab Raza will press for medals.

India’s Olympics silver medallist and three-time Asian champion Ravi Kumar Dahiya (57kg), the 2019 Nur Sultan World Championship silver medallist and the 2019 World Junior Championship gold medallist Deepak Punia (86kg) and the Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia are also there in the strong India pack.

And, indeed, in these weights Pakistani wrestlers will have to do something extraordinary. Their coach Ghulam Fareed is confident about Pakistan’s chances.

“InshaAllah we expect something better from our boys,” Fareed told ‘The News’ here on Thursday.

“Our wrestlers are ready for the challenge. We had good training here for the last few days and the weather was ideal and it helped grapplers train very well,” Fareed said. “We had come all the way here while having trained in hot conditions in Pakistan. Coming here a few days before the fights was a plus. I hope we can do our best.”

Wrestling has been the most potential medal-winning sport of Pakistan in the Commonwealth Games. Since the 1954 Vancour Commonwealth Games Pakistan has so far claimed 17 gold, ten silvers and nine bronze in the quadrennial event. Pakistan’s most impressive event in wrestling was the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games where national grapplers secured seven gold and one silver.

The current six-man pack mostly trained at home. They were aiming to go to Iran for training but it could not happen. Besides all these issues a senior official of Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) also expects medals from all six boys.

“InshaAllah all six will earn medals,” PWF vice-president Arshad Sattar told 'The News'. Arshad is here in Birmingham, acting as an administrative officer of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) but is keenly looking after his brigade also.

“Yes, Indians are tough but our trio of Inam, Inayat and Sharif Tahir will put Indians in trouble,” Arshad hoped. “In the super heavyweight Canada is the best, even from India, and it will depend on draws,” he said.

It will be a testing time for Inam as he will defend the title. Having won gold in the Gold Coast in 2018, Inam is keen to defend the title.

Local police located two out of three missing Sri Lankan contingent members who reportedly fled from the Commonwealth Games 2022 village on August 1.

A wrestler, a judoka, and a judo coach reportedly went missing from Sri Lanka's contingent comprised of 161 athletes and officials.

Sri Lanka’s National Olympic Committee Secretary General Maxwell De Silva on August 4 confirmed that two out of three missing members were located by the local police. However, their details have been kept under cover.

"In fact, we had contacted the British High Commission but they would not reveal details about the found members," Silva told foreign media.

Reports also claimed that the located members of the Sri Lankan contingent have surrendered their passports to avoid going back to their home country, which is facing an economic and governmental crisis.

After Sri Lankan team members went missing, the Commonwealth Games 2022 management removed documents for all remaining members of the team temporarily.

Birmingham: In an embarrassing incident for the organisers, the wrestling bouts at the Commonwealth Games had to be stopped and spectators were asked to vacate the hall after a speaker fell from the ceiling, minutes after the first session began. Only five bouts could be completed when a speaker, used to relay announcement, fell near one of the mat chairmen, raising a safety issue at the Ceventary stadium and arena on the opening day of the wrestling competitions.

This was right after India’s Deepak Punia had won his opening 86kg bout.

The gathered fans were asked to vacate and a thorough check was ordered by the organisers, who fixed a restart of the session at 12:45 local time.

“All are safe, they are just rechecking the whole system to avoid any untoward incident,” said a coach.

How did pakistan become bad in Squash?

Yeh aik laaaaaambeeee kahani hai - same question to be asked about hockey.

But at least in hockey you can say facilities etc can be an issue, with Squash though, seems more a case of the nation losing interest or others getting better

What has changed for Pakistan this time around in CWG? They are performing so well.

Most medals that would come Pakistan way werr wrestling, weightlifhting and javelin throw. All those events happen to be around the end of the commonwealth games

A gold medal is a rare occurrence of for Pakistan in the last few decades. This time, they may get more than one Gold. Somebody deserves massive credit for their performance.

The athletes who are winnings, their family and supporters and coaches should get credit. Just imagine if the sports board and government provided the support they need. Anyone who is winning a medal for Pak is doing it without the support of government or sports board.

Imran khan investment on sports just kidding .

Sadly for non cricket sports it is just still dependent on individual how much talent he has and the effort he puts in as there is zero support from system

Disgrace.
