BIRMINGHAM: Pakistani wrestlers Mohammad Sharif Tahir and Asad Ali were off to a winning start in their respective categories of wrestling events in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Tahir, in Men's Freestyle 74kg category, defeated John Vake of Tonga by 11-0 to qualify for the quarter-final contest which will take place later today. He will meet Canada's Jasmit Singh Phulka in the knock-out match.

On the other hand, young Asad fought in Men's Freestyle 57kg category and outclassed his English opponent in 1 minute 15 seconds by 10-0. England's Harvey Ridings was speechless in front of Pakistani wrestler.

Asad will play his quarter-final against Namibia's Romio Ricardo Goliath later today.

Pakistan's Tayyab Raza also qualified for the quarter-final in Men's Freestyle 97kg category. He took 10 technical points to beat Rashji Mackey of The Bahamas. He will now face Scotland's Cameron Nicol in the quarter-final.

BIRMINGHAM: Pakistani wrestlers Mohammad Sharif Tahir, Asad Ali and Tayab Raza have made it into the semi-finals in their respective categories of wrestling events in the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Tahir and his Canadian opponent Jasmit Singh Phulka fought hard on mat A here at Coventry Arena Wrestling.

Taking an early lead in Men's Freestyle 74kg category's quarter-final, Tahir was suffering to tackle the Canadian wrestler. Phulka took a point but failed to maintain consistency as he lost the match by 5-1.

Tahir will now meet New Zealand's Cole Hawkins in the semi-final on mat B later today.

Earlier in the day, Tahir defeated John Vake of Tonga by 11-0 to qualify for the quarter-final.

Moreover, Asad Ali beat Namibia's Romio Ricardo Goliath to qualify for the semi-final contest. In Men's Freestyle 57kg wrestling event, Asad beat Goliath by 10-0.

In a qualifying match, Asad beat England's Harvey Ridings by 10-0 in just 1 minute and 15 seconds.

Asad will meet India's Kumar Ravi in the semi-final.

In Men's 97kg category, Tayab Raza beat Scotland Cameron Nicol by 10-0 to become the third Pakistani to play a semi-final later today.

Tayyab qualified for the quarter-final after defeating Rashji Mackey of The Bahamas.

He will now face Canada's Nishan RANDHAWA in the semi-final.

On Friday, Pakistan's wrestlers Inam Butt (86kg) and Zaman Khan (125kg) won a silver medal each whereas Inayatullah won bronze in the 67kg category of Men's Freestyle wrestling event.

BIRMINGHAM: Mohammad Sharif Tahir beat New Zealand's Cole Hawkings to qualify for the final of Men's Freestyle 74kg wrestling event in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 here on Saturday.

Tahir stunned Hawkings in a three-minutes-and-53-seconds-long semi-final contest. The Pakistani wrestler took the back-to-back lead and finished with 11-0 to ensure another medal for Pakistan.

It's time for another Pakistan vs India final match in the wrestling event of CWG 2022. Tahir will meet India's Naveen Naveen in the final later today.

On Friday, Pakistan's Inam Butt lost to India's Deepak Punia to finish with a silver medal in Men's Freestyle 86kg wrestling event.

Today, Pakistan's Tayab Raza and Ali Raza failed to qualify for the final in their respective categories. Tayab lost to Canada's Nishan Randhawa in Men's 97kg category's semi-final whereas Ali Asad lost to his Indian counterpart Kumar Ravi in Men's 57kg category's semi-final.

Tayab will meet India's Deepak Nehra in Bronze medal match while Ali will face New Zealand's Suraj Sing in Bronze medal match later today.
 
BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan hockey team beat Canada by 4-3 in a nail-biting seventh-position match in Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022.

The two teams battled for the seventh position in 10-teams hockey event of CWG 2022.

Taking the field here at University Hockey and Squash Center, both the teams played competitive hockey as the first quarter finished without a goal being scored.

A few attempts were well defended by the goalkeepers which forced the two teams to come out with a better plan to net the ball.

In 24th minute, Abdul Rana scored a goal take 1-0 lead for Pakistan. It wasn't too late for another leading goal for the Green Shirts as Ghazanfar Ali struck the very next minute.

Under pressure, Canada also made a solid comeback when Matthew Sarmento made the most of a penalty corner to make the scoreboard 2-1 in the 26th minute. Keegan Pereira then netted the ball in the last minute of second quarter to make Pakistan worried as the scores were level 2-2 when the two teams walked out for half-time.

A goalless third quarter increased the excitement of this dead rubber contest. Pakistan's skipper Umar Bhutta scored in the 52nd minute to once again take the lead for his team.

Leading by 3-2, Pakistan tried to save goals on one end and counter-attacking on the other. But, Sarmento once again struck a goal to level the score 3-3.

On the last minute of the game, Abdul Shahid scored a match-winning goal for Pakistan which helped them finish seventh in multi-sports event.

Disagree...India women beat the same Aussies in Olympic quarterfinal and now held them 1-1 in this semis which they eventually won on penalty shootout.

A crucial umpring error can have an adverse effect on any team morale in such a big game.

Kudos to our team...getting better and competing with big teams regularly....

Kudos to the Indian girls they played well however Australia was the better team this around, and was the deserving winner.

In regards to tokyo olympics a good result by indian women but that was last year. We are talking about the match from yesturday and australia did end up winning.

Indian womens team have a lot to be proud of and this will make them stronger

That naveen guy dint look 19 lol, but seriously some of our wrestlers look so confident and intimidating . I tought it was only the sushil kumar guy was like that and an exception contrary to so many other sports where we tend to choke under pressure. There is something the sports body is doing right

Bangladesh doesn’t really have a sporting culture, things that would help them eliminate poverty such as one culture/ethnicity ends up being the reason for their poor show in sports as well.

BD is a South Asian powerhouse in economy but at the same time they absolutely seem to have zero sporting culture.

Haryana has been promoting sports from 2000s.. Sushil was part of that era Phoghats as well.

Not Surprisingly wrestling has become huge in those areas.

Thankfully to Mary Kom boxing has become huge in North East and Gopichand gas made Badminton huge in Telugu states.

BD is not a South Asian powerhouse. Just like everything with BD just a bunch of statistics made up by their government. Non of their consumption levels are even same as Pakistan and many are Nepal level.

Very tough when you have Iranian, Japanese, American and x Soviet nations wrestlers in fray.
 
India have good wrestlers for these countries but apart from one or two no one is gonna win at Olympics or World championship.

World wrestling championship is starting next month and apart from Ravi dahiya and maybe bajrang punia no one is gonna win in that event.
 
I m most impressed by Ali Asad from Pakistan he may not win at world level but he looks good and can give good competition to high level wrestlers.

No Australia are not. They were beaten by India in Tokyo Quarterfinals and this game was also 1-1 before the clock decided to act funny again.
