The constitutional right to keep & bear arms, and mass shootings in the US

You are a teacher in south London, IIRC? Do we have any kids brandishing knives?

Thankfully I am not in S London. I am in the Midlands and although you get sworn at on the odd occasion, I have never been or felt threatened. I have stopped fights after school where upto 30 kids were involved and I was one of only 2 on duty.
This is just tragic but in a society where guns are common, its not surprising. Thankfully she survived

Jan 9 (Reuters) - Police on Monday hailed a 25-year-old Virginia teacher as a hero for evacuating students from her classroom even after she was shot by a 6-year-old student.

The teacher, Abigail Zwerner, was in stable condition on Monday, following the Friday afternoon shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, Police Chief Steve Drew told a news conference.

Meanwhile the 6-year-old boy was in temporary custody at a medical facility, and a judge had until Tuesday to determine whether to extend a temporary order keeping him in custody, Drew said.

Baby among six killed in possible cartel attack in California

Four generations of one family were killed in what is described as a "cartel-like execution" at a California residence known to police for drug-related activity.

A 16-year-old mother, her 10-month old son and the baby's grandmother and great-grandmother were among the victims, police and family say.

The home in Goshen, population 3,000, had been raided by police last week.

Police say they are seeking two known suspects in the "targeted massacre".

In a news conference on Tuesday, Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux did not provide the names of the suspects, saying that it was due to the possibility that the killers were watching in order to avoid capture, but revealed that much was already known to authorities about the tragedy.

Police had searched the residence just last week and found stashes of marijuana and methamphetamines.

Ten people have died and at least 10 others been wounded in a mass shooting in a largely Asian city in southern California, law enforcement said Sunday, with the suspect still at large hours later.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun.

Another day. Another shooting.

When will they do something about their gun problem?

California police have identified the gunman suspected of killing 10 people in a ballroom dance studio near Los Angeles as Huu Can Tran, 72, who was later found dead in a white van.

He had a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was declared dead at the scene, LA County Sheriff Robert Luna said.

Celebrations for Lunar New Year had been under way in Monterey Park, known for its large Asian population.

Police do not yet know the motive.

Ten people were wounded in the shooting, and seven are still in hospital, some in a critical condition, the sheriff said at a news conference on Sunday afternoon in Monterey Park.

He added that the 10 people who died were still being identified, but they "seem to be probably in their 50s, 60s and some maybe even beyond there".

Earlier, officials said five women and five men had been killed, all "probably" of Asian descent.

The US does not have a single definition for "mass shootings", but The Gun Violence Archive - a non-profit research group - defines one as an attack injuring at least four people, excluding any shooters.

This is the 33rd mass shooting in the US this year, they say.

It is also the fifth gun mass murder - a single incident that kills at least four - and the deadliest so far this year.

Primal Instinct: California Shooting Hero Tells Of Wrestling Killer's Gun

The young coder credited with disarming the 72-year-old suspect in a mass shooting during Lunar New Year celebrations in California has described his "primal" battle with the gunman.

The man, identified by the New York Times as 26-year-old Brandon Tsay, was in the office of the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in Alhambra on Saturday night watching dancers when he looked up to see the suspect pointing a gun at him.

"My heart sank, I knew I was going to die," he told the newspaper.

"That moment, it was primal instinct," he said. "Something happened there. I don't know what came over me."

He lunged at the man and grabbed the barrel of the gun, beginning the fight of his life.

Mr Tsay, whose grandparents founded the ballroom, did not know that the suspect, identified by police as Huu Can Tran, was believed to have killed 10 people and wounded 10 others just minutes earlier at another dance hall in nearby Monterey Park.

He said he had never seen a gun in real life -- but that it was clear the gunman was there not to rob the place but to kill.

"From his body language, his facial expression, his eyes, he was looking for people," Mr Tsay told the Times.

Mr Tsay and his family said that security footage showed the pair struggling for around 90 seconds before he was able to seize the gun from the suspect.

He immediately pointed it back at him and yelled "Go, get the hell out of here," he told the newspaper.

The suspect fled. Hours later he was dead, shooting himself inside a white van in Torrance, several miles to the south, on Sunday afternoon as police moved to arrest him.

Five men and five women, all in their 50s or 60s, were killed by the gunman in Monterey Park on Saturday night.

Police have said the reason behind the attack, which came as Asian communities around the world celebrated the Lunar New Year holiday, remained a mystery.

They said they believe the gunman intended to carry out a similar massacre in Alhambra, and credited those who disarmed him with saving lives.

Los Angeles County sheriff Robert Luna has said two people disarmed the suspect in Alhambra -- but Mr Tsay and his family, who still run the ballroom, say the video footage shows he alone grappled with the killer.

Mr Tsay's older sister Brenda, who runs the business, said the footage showed the gunman's fierce struggle to keep control of his weapon.

"He kept coming at him," she told the Times. "He really wanted the gun back."

A gunman killed seven people before being arrested in California on Monday, just two days after a shooting claimed 11 lives at a popular dance hall.

The latest attacks occurred at two separate locations in the coastal city of Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles (50 km) south of San Francisco.

The attacker was identified as 67-year-old Zhao Chunli, a local resident.

It comes as the state mourns the deaths in majority-Asian Monterey Park during celebrations for the Lunar New Year.

The suspect on Monday was filmed by news cameras turning himself in to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office about two hours after the attack.

The first four victims were discovered at a mushroom farm around 14:22 local time (00:22GMT), while the other three were later found at a nearby trucking business.

Investigators have not yet provided a motive for this attack.

Monterey Park shooter: police ask why he attacked dance hall he frequented
All 11 victims of the shooting have now been identified, with all of them, except one, being in their 60s and 70s

Investigators in California are searching for answers as to why a 72-year-old man gunned down patrons at a ballroom dance hall on Saturday night, a venue he is said to have frequented.

The community of Monterey Park continues to reel from a weekend massacre that killed 11 people and wounded nine. The gunman, identified as Huu Can Tran, attacked the Star Ballroom Dance Studio then drove to another nearby dance hall where an employee wrestled a weapon away from him, preventing an even greater tragedy.

Tran later killed himself as police closed in.

Robert Luna, the Los Angeles county sheriff, said investigators have not yet established a clear motive and are looking into whether Tran had relationships with the people he shot at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio. Tran was previously arrested for illegally possessing a firearm, had a rifle at home, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and appeared to be manufacturing gun silencers. Investigators are also honing in on the possibility he was motivated by jealousy or other personal animus, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“What drove a mad man to do this? We don’t know, but we intend to find out,” Luna said.

A man who said he had been a longtime friend of Tran told the Associated Press that the gunman had been a regular patron at the Star Ballroom and the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio, the second venue he targeted, and that he griped about the way he thought people treated him there.

On the day a six-year-old pupil shot and wounded his teacher in the US state of Virginia, school leaders were warned three times that the boy might have a gun, a lawyer for the teacher said.

This included a request to search the boy and a report from another child who said the boy had shown him a gun.

The teacher - Abigail Zwerner, 25 - is recovering after being released from hospital last week.

In the fallout, the school's superintendent has now lost his job.

Board members of Richneck Elementary School voted five-to-one to sack George Parker.

The removal of Mr Parker happened only hours after Ms Zwerner's lawyer, Diane Toscano, announced plans to sue the district, saying the shooting was "entirely preventable".

A US court has struck down a 30-year-old law that barred people under domestic violence restraining orders from owning guns.

The court, as part of the ruling, dismissed charges against a Texas man found guilty of harassing and stalking his girlfriend and also in possession of arms despite a ban.

The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling in June expanding gun rights.

The US justice department is expected to appeal against the order.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said that Congress had determined the law "nearly 30 years ago".

"Whether analysed through the lens of Supreme Court precedent, or of the text, history, and tradition of the Second Amendment, that statute is constitutional," Mr Garland said in a written statement. "Accordingly, the Department will seek further review of the Fifth Circuit's contrary decision."

In the case of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v Bruen, the Supreme Court ruled that restrictions against gun owners must be "consistent with this nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation".

Although 5th Circuit Judge Cory Wilson said banning people under domestic violence restraining orders from owning firearms is intended to "protect vulnerable people in our society", he said the Bruen ruling essentially nullified that consideration.

The ban as it applies to this case, Mr Wilson said, was something that "our ancestors would never have accepted".

U.K. jails right-wing extremist who helped "inspire" U.S. mass shootings

London — A 19-year-old British man whose extreme right-wing videos helped "inspire" two recent U.S. shootings, according to police, was sentenced Friday to 11 years in prison by a U.K. court. Daniel Harris was convicted of encouraging terrorism.

He had been previously found guilty of six terrorism offenses in November of 2022, following a slew of online posts on the World Truth Videos platform spewing racist rhetoric and issuing calls for the death of minorities.

Harris was also convicted of the possession of a 3D printer with the intent to make his own gun.

So a UK kid inspired mass shootings in the US. Crazy.

Is it even possible to make a working gun via a 3D printer?

I believe it is possible. I have seen videos before.

3D printers are getting advanced.

The the argument of gun control will be out the window soon.

Its America, even if there was not a single gun, these people would use another method to kill.

Violence is in their culture. IF the government go around bombing and murdering millions, this mentality will be in the peoples mind too.

Guns are a big factor , but so is the mentality of the people . Both have to be worked on to make progress

What a delusional country.

You have the right to bear arms but you do not have a right to healthcare or an education, no the later are privledges.

Amreekans can lose their healthcare, but they will never lose their guns even though they paid for them.

Republicans tried good and hard to repeal Obamacare for example.

Insanity.

Priorities all wrong in the so called beacon of civilisation.

Acc to stats, West Virigina has over 300 gun related deaths(& rising), many are young people who use guns for suicide. Yet they are giving them away free. Im sure due to this policy there would have been an increase.

Then again...the vaccine will outdo guns...

Republicans tried good and hard to repeal Obamacare for example.

Nowadays Americans are divided on it, the woke or Liberal side doesn’t have guns as such and protest against gun laws every year and want free healthcare and more social benefits.

Your social views align with that of Conservative America(Republicans) but on Free healthcare and guns you differ in which you align with the former.

Michigan State: Three killed in shooting at university

At least three people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University, police say.

As well as the three victims, police said the suspect had died apparently from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound".

Another five people were injured in the attack at the main campus in the city of East Lansing late on Monday.

Police described the suspect as "a black male, shorter in stature". They later said he was 43 years old with no known affiliation to the university.

Students and local residents were told to shelter-in-place during the manhunt, however police later lifted the order, saying there was "no longer a threat to campus".

They added that the suspect was "located off campus".

In photos released earlier, the suspect was wearing a denim jacket, a navy baseball cap and red trainers.

The shooting started shortly after 20:00 local time on Monday (01:00 GMT Tuesday).

Police officers responded to the attack, finding victims at the Berkey Hall on the campus's north side, and the adjacent Michigan State University Union building.

At a news briefing, the police said there were several crime locations, and their investigation was continuing. The attacker's motive is not known.

A number of ambulances were seen arriving at the scene, and the injured - some of them believed to be in a life-threatening condition - are now being treated in hospital.

"This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight," said Deputy Chief Chris Rozman of the university's police force.

All campus activities have been cancelled for at least 48 hours. East Lansing lies about 70 miles (112km) north-west of Detroit.

Police in the US have named the gunman who fatally shot three students at Michigan State University as Anthony McRae.

The 43-year-old, who killed himself hours after Monday's shooting, was not a student at the university and had no known affiliation, police added.

The shooting began shortly before 8.30pm local time and left three students dead and five in critical condition after officials said shots were fired in two locations - an academic building and the student union.

Chris Rozman, deputy chief of campus police, said officials have "absolutely no idea" what the motive was, adding that McRae was not a student or Michigan State employee.

"This truly has been a nightmare we're living tonight," he said.

Mr Rozman added that police confronted McRae before he killed himself.

TSA raises alarm amid increase in guns at US airports

An assault rifle and 163 rounds of ammunition taken from a man about to board a plane in New Orleans on Valentine's Day is an example of a trend identified by US officials.

In some parts of the country, more passengers are attempting to bring their guns through airport security.

While 2022 was a record year for guns found at US airport checkpoints, the TSA says, 2023 may well beat it.

Officers in Seattle, Washington DC and Indianapolis have all raised the alarm.

The TSA intercepted a record 6,542 guns at airport checkpoints across the US last year. Some 88% of them were loaded with ammunition.

Travellers are allowed to pack unloaded firearms inside checked luggage that typically goes into an aircraft's hold. They are also required tell the airline they intend to travel with weapons at check-in.

But guns are not allowed in carry-on bags or passenger cabins, even if a passenger has a concealed weapon permit.

The TSA intercepts guns at airport security checkpoints and reports some airports are seeing a surge in numbers in some places that are ahead of comparable figures last year.

Joe Biden to unveil executive order to crackdown on law breaking gun sellers
Merrick Garland, the attorney general, tasked with moving the country ‘as close to universal background checks as possible’

Joe Biden will announce on Tuesday that he is ordering the attorney general, Merrick Garland, to crack down on gun sellers who break the law, “moving the US as close to universal background checks as possible”, the White House said.

The president will speak in Monterey Park, California, meeting victims’ families and community members devastated by a mass shooting that claimed 11 lives and injured nine other people in January.

Opinion polls show that a majority of both Democrats and Republicans support universal background checks that would reveal whether a person is a convicted criminal or domestic abuser before allowing them to buy a gun. But with Republicans in control of the House of Representatives, there is little hope of Congress heeding Biden’s pleas to pass legislation.

On a swing through California, the president will acknowledge this political reality and unveil an executive order to enforce existing laws against gun sellers who, knowingly or otherwise, currently fail to run the background checks they should.

On a conference call with reporters, a senior administration official said last year’s bipartisan gun safety legislation – the most sweeping of its kind in three decades – “created an opening” for Biden to direct the attorney general to move the US as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.

Most kids in Pakistan simply do not have access to guns.

Plus mental health issues (most common cause of mass shootings) are not prevalent in Pakistan given joint family structures, closeness to Islam etc.

US gun violence: Girl, 3, kills sister in accidental shooting at Texas home

A 3-year-old US girl found a loaded gun at home and accidentally shot her sister, killing the 4-year-old, police said.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the girls were in the bedroom of an apartment in Houston, where they lived with their parents.

Five adults, who were all family members or family friends, were in other parts of the apartment and the girls were unintentionally left unsupervised around 8pm on Sunday evening (local time), Gonzalez said.

“The 3-year-old gained access to a loaded, semi-automatic pistol. Family members heard a single gunshot. They ran into the room and found the small toddler, 4 years old, unresponsive,” Gonzalez said.

I believe they call this "freedom".

Actually it's worse than that.
They love their guns more than their kids.

I don't think this family will take much of an action to change their views and practices of gun ownership after a little bit of a dramatized mourning.

Same goes with the dogs. The dog attacks and kills a baby - it's the owners fault. An army of idiots come into the support of the dog. No one cares about the killed child, not even the parents. They will continue to have dogs.

Three children and three adults have been killed in a shooting by an ex-student at a school in the US city of Nashville, Tennessee.

The attack took place at The Covenant School, a private Christian school for students aged three to 11.

The three pupils who died were all aged nine.

Police said the suspect gained entry by shooting through a door at the school. A search of their home led to officers seizing more firearms.

The child victims have been named as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney.

The adult victims were named as Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Mike Hill, 61.

The suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Audrey Hale, officers said.

There has been some confusion about Hale's gender identity - with police initially describing the attacker as a woman, and later saying that Hale identified as transgender.

A police spokesperson told Washington Post that Hale "is a biological woman who, on a social media profile, used male pronouns".

The shooter was armed with three guns, including a semi-automatic rifle, and was shot dead by police.

They had left a manifesto and had drawn a detailed map of the school, with entry points. Police are now studying those documents.

Hale, who had no criminal record, was a former student at the school and officers said they believe "resentment" may have been a motive.

So transgenders after all, are not always those innocent and cute lil fluffy creatures that the liberals made them to sound and look like.

Glad that they killed it.
In jail, it would’ve claimed to be a female inside and demanding to be transferred to the women section only to attack and rape females.

I wonder why we don’t hear a transgender in a female section claiming to be feeling like a male from inside and demanding to be moved to male prison section?

Same in sports.

This was a terrorist attack and a hate crime.

The killer went to the same school as a child.

Media should label it as it is but will never call transgenders terrorists.

One off or 100 the fact is this trans went to a school which 'they' hated, wrote a manifesto and carried out killings inc of 3 children. This was as terrorist attack as much as a terrorist attack can be . But for Hindutva fans its hard to accept terrorists can be others too but the denial is real not matter how embarrassing. Keep your poor comments to yourself .

Any doctors on the forum :facepalm

Is this an x ray of the terrorist? Are they claiming this was the cause to shoot down 3 kids?

It seems a pointless label in this one-off incident. Terrorism usual pertain to killings backed by an ideology or an identifiable pattern.

I agree. Definition of terrorism - the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

I see no political aim in this henious act of violence.

No, it's not related to that particular shooting. They are just showing an x-ray of bullet in a young girl's chest to make the point that gun violence is out of control in USA

Weird. 38 mass shooting in the US this month and this is all they could find.

This was a terrorist attack and a hate crime.

The killer went to the same school as a child.

Media should label it as it is but will never call transgenders terrorists.

We all know if this was a Muslim who committed this attack, the media would label it a terrorist attack and would release the manifesto.

But because it was some transsexual weirdo who committed the attack, and the woke media suck up to the Trans community, this won't be treated as a terrorist attack.

This was nothing but a terrorist attack on Christians.

Imagine the media and liberals being all up in the air if this was Christian person attacking a transgender group?

There will be outrages and nationwide protests, had a Christian attacked a transgender group. But because it is a trans person committing the attack, people are trying to cater to the feelings of the poor trans people, instead of releasing the manifesto. They are more concerned about not using the wrong pronouns of this terrorist lol.

Woke ideology will someday be the end of the west.

Christ alive.

So glad that I’m not raising my children in the US.

Yes it is relevant but but so far you have failed to condemn the attack and then making up some diversion excuses.

Why cant you answer a simple question.

Are you claiming this wasn't a terrorist act?

Don't bother bruv, I think he is disappointed that it was not a Muslim attacker, and that the media is not smearing Islam, that is why he is not condemning the attack because the attacker was both a transgender and a Christian (went to the same school he attacked).

Some users obviously missed the memo on Muslim attackers avenging the wars in the ME as motive which has nothing to do with ideological terrorism. Just look at the IRA - the Christian ideological wing of UK terrorism.

But yes, the media will spare the fact the killer was a transgender just to appease the woke agenda. The media will also fail to report in detail he went to the same Convent school where he killed 6 innocent people.

Such a sad state of affairs, 3 innocent children died at the hands of a transgender, and for what? Upset that his faith rejected him? So sad . . . .

Imagine the media and liberals being all up in the air if this was Christian person attacking a transgender group?

You don't need to imagine. In 2022 Anderson Lee Aldrich killed 5 at a LGBT nightclub, Club Q. He was a neo nazi and a registered member of the Mormon Church.

The US also had ISIS inspired Muslim Omar Mateen kill 49 at the gay nightclub Pulse in 2016.

There will be outrages and nationwide protests, had a Christian attacked a transgender group.

As posted above that has happened. There was no discernible outrage or nationwide protests as per standards after a mass shooting.

But because it is a trans person committing the attack, people are trying to cater to the feelings of the poor trans people, instead of releasing the manifesto.

What would you think this manifesto contains. Verses from the holy book of LGBT justifying the killings? A tax on everyone who isn't a transgender?

They are more concerned about not using the wrong pronouns of this terrorist lol

Any evidence for this?

Woke ideology will someday be the end of the west.

This may be true, I guess when the US abolished slavery and the UK started letting in dark immigrants the slippery slope had begun.

This is actually one of the problems with woke culture. In many ways the idea is well meaning, but this confused woman thought that being a man meant she had to dress up in combat fatigues and gun down anyone in her path to prove her machismo. She obviously felt it was something that she needed to change sex identity for in order to fulfil her sick fantasies. This is one outcome of confused gender bending.

Tell me you are triggered without telling me you are triggered. Imaginative narrative. We perhaps will find out some semblence of the truth as I have read that they will be releasing their manifesto.

A sheriff in Florida went on a rant against gun control while announcing the arrests of a 12-year-old and a 17-year-old in connection with a shooting that left three dead.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said the two suspects were charged with murder, and a third suspect, a 16-year-old remains at large.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Woods said: "There are individuals out there viewing, and includes some of you media, that want to blame the one thing that has no ability or the capacity to commit the crime itself, and that's the gun. These individuals committed the crime.

"All the gun laws we got in place didn't prevent it, did it? Neither will any new ones. Because here's the fact: The bad guy is going to get a gun no matter what law you put in place.

"These juveniles shouldn't even possess a handgun but they did."

He added: "I am a father, and here's the one thing my boys know. Growing up, the barber had my permission to whip their a****."

On 30 March, Layla Silvernail, 16, was found injured on the side of a road with a gunshot wound. She later died.

The next day authorities discovered the body of 17-year-old boy with the same injury, lying on a road a few miles from the first incident.

The third victim, another 16-year-old girl, was found dead on Saturday inside Layla's vehicle, which was partly submerged in a body of water.

Mr Woods said the victims and suspects all knew each other and were involved in committed robberies and burglaries. They also had affiliations to gangs.

Florida has gone the other way.

Sunshine State Becomes The Firearm State: Florida’s New Permitless Concealed Carry Law

On Monday April 3, 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 543 into law. This bill, strengthening the second amendment, eliminates the requirement that an individual obtain a permit to carry a concealed firearm in Florida. Beginning July 1, 2023 permitless concealed carry for lawfully owned weapons will become legal.

No training , no permit? This could become dangerous for Florida. America is not a nation where such freedom to carry guns should be allowed esp due to so many mass shootings in recent history.

A permit would be fine, as people would be vetted I assume.

At least 20 people were shot and wounded late Saturday at a Sweet 16 birthday party in the southern US state of Alabama, local media reported.
Television station WRBL early Sunday reported heavy police activity and crime scene tape around a building in Dadeville, Alabama, where it said white sheets could be seen covering parts of the floor.

Law enforcement agencies have not publicly confirmed any injuries or fatalities, but local media and witnesses have said several wounded people, the majority of them teens, were transported to local hospitals for medical attention.

WRBL reported that during a preliminary investigation, police and sheriff's office investigators suspected that an altercation led to the shooting at a teen's birthday party, at around 10:30 pm Saturday (0330 GMT Sunday).

The United States, a country of around 330 million people, is awash with some 400 million guns, and deadly mass shootings are a regular occurrence.

Police late Saturday confirmed two people were killed and four others wounded in a shooting in Louisville, Kentucky, the same city were a gunman slaughtered five people at a bank last Monday.
