More traditional approach might not have given England 400+ score in first inning.

In one dayers, T20s teams have learnt to defend attacking games over a period. Now you have to start with ODI field against England and bring them out of comfort zone. Sehwag decoded this long back. Later Warner adopted it. When the innings starts you have 3 slips minimum, a gully, a keeper, point, cover, midoff, mid on. May be a third or long leg. It is easy to penetrate the field with this field set which is what England is doing on flat wickets. Today as the innings progressed NZ packed the leg side with 3 deep fielders. You have can use the bazball tactics against them. Pakistan dropped the ball big time with totally unimaginative strategies.

I maintain that if Harry Brook had not been part of England team on tour to Pakistan, Pakistan would have won a test.
Harry Brook getting out for zero without facing a ball was the difference today. England's approach is what it is. 4th innings pressure may have made them crumble faster on day 5 pitch with slower approach.

Regardless of the result, England remains the most exciting test side, which is determined to build it's legacy. Honest truth is we all would like our teams to play the way England is playing test cricket. Well we Indians and perhaps Pakistanis as well would like our t20 teams to play like England is playing test cricket.

In due course they will forget how to grind an innings out. When form takes a nose dive or when they are up against challenging conditions or good bowling they will once again go back to relying on Joe Root. Being positive is good thing. But when to put a pause is something you learn from experience. Long time back Steve Waugh echoed after India beat Australia at the Adelaide oval that there are times you have to take a measured approach. Back then they used to score at 4 an over which was a big deal.

England played too loose in the second innings, ran out their star batsman for nought, and even then they were completely in the game and only lost the match by one run.
A disappointing performance and result, but nothing to set off alarm bells or require wholesale changes. Just need to make some tweaks to the approach.

England were stupid to declare early and not score 50 more runs in the 1st innings.

Absolutely shocking captaincy by Stokes. The declaration was a disaster and he was clueless against Cummins and Lyon, reminded of Azhar Ali against Buttler and Woakes at Old Trafford.

I'm actually glad some of the Bazball braggadocio has been punctured. I'm fed up of the self-congratulation and lectures about "how to play" Test cricket.
An attacking ethos is great but still need to combined with some common sense.

this series is basically two cricket concepts fighting, Australia playing the test series in a proper test fashion while England doing the bazball rechlessness.

There was nothing wrong with Root’s captaincy. The core issue for England was lack of proper Test batsmen. That issue has not been rectified and instead, McCullum has asked the white ball players to treat Test cricket like ODIs.
This strategy is not sustainable and it fails to address the core issue that has played English Test cricket for years.
Root is a gentleman who has always been there for England. The way he was hounded out of captaincy and replaced by a selfish man who has repeatedly put himself above England was very disappointing.
What about baistrow behind the stumps.

There is an interesting counter argument that England are a goodish side with a dodgy top 3, two aging fast bowlers and no decent spinner.
The fact that they won in Pakistan and went toe to toe with Australia is because of the approach they have used and they would have failed more playing more conventionally.
Not sure I agree, but it is a valid position.
Test cricket has been around since 1876 — to suggest England have suddenly discovered the secret to the way it should be played is clearly nonsense.
But maybe this is the best way they can play to maximise their resources.
Ultimately, as allegedly Churchill said “history is written by the victors”
If Australia play attritional , defensive cricket and win that will be the right way to play.
