The disastrous reign of Ramiz Raja

Angry reaction to question by Indian reporter by Ramiz

Sri Lanka emerged as the new cricketing superpower of the subcontinent as they defeated Pakistan by 23 runs to win their sixth Asia Cup title on Sunday. It was a massive heartbreak for Babar Azam & Co who were stunned by the island nation on a second consecutive occasion in the tournament. After setting a challenging 171-run target, Dasun Shanaka and his boys bundled out Pakistan for 147 in 20 overs to win the high-voltage Asia Cup 2022 final.

After the conclusion of the game, the Lankan dressing room was on cloud 9 and so were the fans who arrived at the Dubai International Stadium to watch the game. But for the Pakistan cricket team and its supporters, it was another bitter pill to swallow. In fact, PCB chief Ramiz Raja, who was in attendance at the venue, had a verbal altercation with an Indian journalist on his way back.

When asked if ‘awaam’ (people) were sad over Pakistan’s defeat, Raja seemed to be getting a bit furious. The Indian journalist asked, “ The people of Pakistan are very sad. What message would you give them?”

The question wasn’t welcomed by the PCB chief as he replied saying, “Aap India se honge? Aap to bade khush honge? (Are you from India? You must be very happy then?)”.

Not just that, Raja moved a few steps ahead and could be seen snatching the person’s mobile phone who asked the question. However, the PCB chief returned it right away and left the arena before answering a few more questions asked by the journalists present at the exit of the stadium.

The Indian journalist then took to Twitter and shared the video of the incident asking if he asked the wrong question. He even mentioned that Raja, being the president of a national cricket board, should not have taken the phone.

Ramiz Raja on Pakistan defeat:

"Our batting couldn't find the right rhythm as well. I think the important thing is that we have to play spin well. As long as we don't pick the spinners out of the hand, I think it will put pressure on us"

"I think this side is capable of winning the World Cup, I think this total was a bit hard to chase down for the final. We should keep on fighting, stay competitive and we will win big matches inshallah.

"Look we made it to the final, it is a big effort. In T20s, if 3-4 overs don't go as you want, I think it creates a lot of pressure. But like I said, fans own this team and I think after a long time we have found a team which we can market and follow"

Nothing insightful in his comments. Basically he is saying same things what dummy goalie saying. He is satisfied with the performance and happy to be in the final. Don’t expect anything from him. Same team will go to World Cup and first round exit.

He simply cares about marketing.

It was amateur response from Ramiz (his antics with the journalist).

He shouldn't have come to watch the match in the first place.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday issued notices to Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Municipal Corporation of Islamabad (MCI) seeking reply on a petition filed against the civic agency’s move to outsource six cricket grounds in the federal capital.

MCI has issued an advertisement in newspapers inviting parties to outsource management, operation and maintenance of six cricket grounds.

The cricket grounds included G-8/2 (old Diamond Cricket Ground), Bhutto Cricket Ground G-7/1, Margalla Cricket Ground G-9, National Cricket Ground F-7, Marghzar Cricket Ground Saidpur Village and Shalimar Cricket Ground main Margalla Road F-6. IHC Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan heard the petition.

Adil Aziz Qazi, counsel for the petitioner, argued that the government is renting out six grounds which would not be financially feasible for players to use these facilities.

He said that the MCI was charging Rs2,000 to Rs4,000 from the players for using the cricket grounds. If they are outsourced to private clubs, they would charge exorbitant fee for these grounds.

He said the MCI administrator issued a notification on Sept 8 to outsource these grounds. He argued that the administrator cannot outsource the grounds since it was a domain of the mayor who would be elected after the local government elections. He said an administrator, who has been appointed for a short period, cannot outsource grounds for two years.

The court after issuing notices to the respondents adjourned further hearing till Friday.

When is this guy going to be booted out by the PMLN government?

In the Asia Cup final, Babar Azam-led Pakistan suffered a 23-run defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka and as a result, the Islanders won the continental tournament for the sixth time. However, the biggest talking point came after the match came to an end, as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja snapped at an Indian journalist, who had asked Ramiz to say something to "Pakistani fans who were sad after the loss."

After hearing the question, the PCB chief was left fuming as he asked the journalist whether he was from India and also hinted that the Indian fans would be happy at the outcome of the final. Ramiz was also seen snatching the phone from the journalists' Shane before giving it back to him.

Now, while doing a QnA with fans on Pakistan Cricket's official's YouTube channel, Ramiz was asked about the incident after the Asia Cup final.

Talking about the incident, Ramiz said: "I'll tell you what happened. The line of questioning was not right. The only point that I had was, the reporter asked that all Pakistan fans are angry with the loss in Asia Cup final, I just asked him how does he know that fans are angry? You are sitting in a different area, so how do you know the fans are unhappy."

"These are provocative statements, if you do not have any malice in your heart, it will come through. Anyway, it was just one incident, we shall let it go," he added.

Pakistan tasted a second straight humbling at the hands of Sri Lanka and this time it was in the final of Asia Cup 2022. Babar Azam's team failed to drive home the advantage in the summit clash in Dubai despite winning the toss and having the Lankans tottering at 67/5 after the first 10 overs. Bhanuka Rajapaksa slammed an unbeaten 71 to guide the Lankans to 170/6. After that the Sri Lankan bowlers bowled out Pakistan for 147 to script a great win.

Clown was running live fan forum video on his own channel(Ramiz Speaks). Does he feel no shame doing this?

Well in terms of scheduling and arranging tours you got to give it to Ramiz he has done well sometime back Pakistan team not playing much cricket may be this is due to playing back in home , but still Ramiz has done well on FTP front
7 games with England then a triSeries with 2nd giggers and then Wt20 and then test matches with England

He's doing alright don't understand these knee jerk reactions from fans on this forum.

It's also probably the hardest position considering Pakistan's poor setup to its grass roots, to the pitches, medical staff and the ever changing domestic infrastructure. Only so many things a person can do.

I am indifferent on Ramiz so far. He is very focused on getting teams back in Pakistan and we've seen it with a historic Australian tour and now an England tour. Early on PJL but I think that's a good setup too.

Pitches in Pakistan remain a problem as they have forever so I am not sure what he can do about that. It seems like they're trying all sorts of things but nothing seems to work. Shaheen injury stuff was a poor look though.

Ramiz may have his deficiencies but he's by far the best chairman ever had. Wasim Khan laid the ground work and I think ramiz jadd done a decent job expanding the game. There's also been a noticeable increase in their social media presence.

He does understand marketing side better and from his commentary one can make out he's a rational thinker so ll turn out beneficial for Pak cricket and for domestic circuit.

Just want him to avoid social media and avoid attending games. His interview to Indian reporter was totally unprofessional. Just focus on your d@mn job!

Earlier in the year, intrigued Associate chiefs fielded calls from charismatic Pakistan Cricket Board chair Ramiz Raja who had hit the ground running since taking on a gig universally known as a poisoned chalice.

They were immediately taken by the pitch from Raja, whose grand plan involved a T20 league in Pakistan aimed at players aged from 15-19. It would comprise the most talented youngsters in Pakistan and abroad - including the Associates who are generally desperate for more exposure - while incorporating a draft to mimic the equalization system commonly utilized in American sports.

Months later, Raja’s proposal became a reality with the first edition of the six-team Pakistan Junior League ongoing in Lahore culminating in a final on October 22. Those playing earn between $6000-$16,000 amid a $66 million budget from the PCB, who have taken ownership of it.

Team mentors include legendary cricketers Sir Viv Richards and Javed Miandad.

For a nation not hesitant in throwing incredibly young players in the deep end of international cricket, the PJL is hoped to provide a high-profile pathway, especially for those from tough backgrounds who may have slipped through the cracks previously.

“We have a habit in Pakistan of introducing young talent to the world,” Raja told me. “We are trying to create a development pathway, a route they can follow.”

Raja, a former Pakistan captain before transitioning into an engaging and popular broadcaster, said there was strong interest from overseas with around 150 players putting their hand up to be part of the inaugural edition. Eventually, 24 players from 11 countries made the cut, including from Full Members England, Afghanistan, South Africa and West Indies, and the concept is hoped to catch on around the world.

“This is a prototype. We’re the first cricket country to experiment with this and we've had great response from cricket boards,” Raja said.

The inventive idea represents an opportunity for Raja to put his stamp on Pakistan cricket and create a pipeline of T20 talent, a format this traditionally mercurial team have been relatively strong at.

Identifying youth early and giving them a big stage to perform in their formative years could unlock Pakistan and set them up for a golden era in the short format. Through its pathway program, 100 of the most talented youngsters in Pakistan had been spotted, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds who receive stipends amid commercial support.

“We want to make sure these kids feel comfortable,” Raja said. “It sets them up for a chance at success in cricket and if they are good enough then there is a pathway.”

Raja has also been keen to power women’s cricket, which has taken time to develop in the subcontinent compared to trendsetters Australia and England who boast thriving T20 franchise leagues. The subcontinent has been slow to replicate, but leagues in Pakistan and India are set to finally launch in March.

Earlier this month the PCB announced a four-team women's T20 league will run alongside next year's Pakistan Super League.

Raja, who has been a keen proponent of a women’s PSL since taking the reins, has naturally lofty visions for Pakistan’s women, whose national team lost in the semi-final to Sri Lanka by just one run at last month’s Asia Cup.

"A women’s PSL will be huge in developing women's cricket and will be a great product,” he said. “The dream is one day for Pakistan to play India in the final of a World Cup.

“And Pakistan, of course, winning.”

The Pavilion pundits criticizing Ramiz Raja

Wasim criticized Ramiz quotes on his views on coaches ie he felt they were a waste of time, that he was more in favour of short term one tour specific consulting gigs at best.

Misbah then jumps in saying that if a captain and players need long term security then the same applies to coaches as well ie it takes players at least 6-12 months of frequent practice and indoctrination to buy into a coaches ideas and mindset and even if you approach the best coaches in the world, you will struggle to attract them if they know they will have zero job security ie they can be fired on a moments notice on the basis of a few bad tours or a tournament defeat, they will refuse to work in an unstable environment.

Revelations from the Pavilion show

From The Pavilion

1) The PCB is spending Rs 500 million per year on coaches at the high performance centre and domestic cricket but there is no system of accountability or proper assessment of Kpis

2) The PCB in the name of cost cutting does not cooperate with the domestic coaches ie they don't help the domestic coaches hold training and practice camps during the off season ie 1-2 months to work on the players. The coaches complain they cannot do significant skill, fitness based work on the players during the domestic season and that this stuff can only be executed during the off season

3) Mudassar Nazar as the head of the academies proposed many initiatives for the academies but he was given a run around by the PCB in the name of financial budgetary constraints and he left the PCB unhappy in the end

4) The domestic and international players who come to practice at the high performance centre are responsible for bringing their own balls and bat's, the PCB doesn't provide these to the players in the name of cost cutting. The players cannot afford kookaburra balls because of cost and they have to settle for the local Grey ball and this becomes a problem as the main ball used in international cricket is the kookaburra ball and players find it hard to adjust

5) Saqlain Mushtaq was the head of the high performance centre and Mohd Yousaf was the batting coach at the high performance centre. Ever since these individuals have joined the national team coaching set up, the PCB has not even appointed replacements at the high performance centre as of yet

6) Ehsan Mani and Wasim Khan introduced a 5 year strategic plan for the PCB in 2019. Ever since Ramiz took over, the 5 year plan has been abandoned

7) PCB's investment in U15, U19, A tours, pathway programs is very weak. They should match the investment Engro is making in the hundred best youngsters in the country.

A lot more revelations as well

Shocking stuff, thanks for sharing. If PCB cannot even provide bats and balls to players practising at HPC then what are they there for ?

The end is nigh for Ramiz's reign. In typical Pakistani fashion I expect all the coaches, chief selector, captain and chairman to be replaced only to see the same performances from our team.

Ramiz has made us pathetic in all formats cometh the Eng Tests and we might be whitewashed to complete the 360 degree.

If Ramiz is to save his credibility then he should immediately plan a TriSeries with Ireland and Zimbabwe and make Pakistan win a trophy also a 4 match Test Series be played with Bangladesh to create an ashes like atmosphere to hookup the angry fans :))

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Director has been accused of assaulting a colleague and the matter now is with the Disciplinary Commission.

According to the details, an unfortunate incident happened in the premises of the PCB headquarters and there is also a piece of evidence in the form of CCTV footage.

As per sources, the relations between the Director of Media and Communication, Sami ul Hasan Burney and the Director of Commercial, Usman Waheed, were not ideal from the beginning.

In the past few days, there was a bitter conversation between the two and harsh words were exchanged where a director's language was not worthy of his position.

Later, when confronted in the corridor, Sami allegedly pushed Usman and tried to assault him, on which he defended himself. Sources said that other officials present on the spot calmed down the matter.

Director of Commercial reported the incident and submitted a written complaint. He wrote that the Director of Media also tried attacking him using offensive words. The matter is handed over to the Disciplinary Commission and a meeting has already been held.

A decision will be taken after hearing the stand of both parties and seeing the evidence. The sources further said that some quarters, including a senior PCB officer (not the chairman), are pressuring Usman Waheed to withdraw his complaint but he is not ready for it, he did not even accept the offer of unconditional forgiveness.

Sources further said that the Director of Commercial is also looking into the matter, in this regard he also wants to file an FIR against Sami in the police, but the board itself has restrained him from taking extreme measures by assuring him of justice.

In order to know the position, in this regard, the correspondent contacted Chairman PCB Ramiz Raja, CEO Faisal Hasnain, COO Salman Naseer and Director Commercial Usman Waheed, but despite the passage of more than 24 hours, no one responded.

A message was also sent to Media Director Sami ul Hasan Burney that since there is a case against him, if he does not think it is appropriate to stand up himself, then he should refer to someone else in the board, but he also remained silent.

Hello says Rambo

Ramiz deserves full credit for the inclusion of Mohd Haris. The selectors and Babar wanted to select Sarfaraz Ahmed for his experience but Ramiz put his foot down and demanded that the team had to back youth, potential and requested the selectors, team management to pick Mohd Haris instead.

Mind you Haris while he had a successful PSL but didn't do well in the National T-20 Cup.

Ramiz needs to be sacked ASAP!!!

The title says it all. He is all talk but no vision. He kept Saqlain after semi lost against Australia in 2021 T20 World Cup, thanks to Babar and Yesman Saqlain had no game plan and persisted with useless Hasan Ali instead Nawaz in a spinning track in UAE.

Both were failed miserably in Asia cup final with no game plan and persisted with useless Fakhar, Asif and Khusdil....

Then failed again in 2022 T20 World Cup by taking same bunch of losers plus unfit players, no game plan and make same mistakes.

Your opinion please!!!!

If your team is consistently making semi finals and finals of tournaments, how can you call it bad.

Even in bilaterals, they have won the series they were expected to win and lost the ones they were expected to lose. Not world beating performers but not disastrous by any means.

The women’s team is coming along fine now. There was a Junior PSL which I thought was a good idea given School cricket is almost a pipe dream. He has done all PSLs well too.

What he can’t do anything about is political interference. He was working on a domestic structure and now with change of government, this is just twisted.

I am sure he can do better. One can always talk about selections, coaches and what not. In general, Pakistan have tried the widest assortment of players one can think of before arriving at this team. They also prepared thoroughly coming into all big tournaments.

He is a good ambassador in general for Pakistan cricket.

Here is the biggest problem. Every institution in Pakistan is stuffed with crony appointments, vested interests and dubious loyalties. Operating within that is hard for anyone. Resistance and conspiracies are everywhere. You could put Elon Musk as PCB chairman and he will achieve much less than his potential.

There are no winners in this.

If Ramiz had sat in Lahore than flying to Melbourne for giving that 5hitty advice of going berserk in last 4 overs which absolutely fell flat

Ramiz is a spotlight hungry guy who has no business running pcb, this isn't early 00's anymore. Success on the field follows from professionally run sports body, not the other way around. If anytiem you see Rameez on any traditional media or social media other than a policy presser, he is not doing his job and just being a glorified cheerleader.

I was speaking with a player today who was saying that domestic coaches are receiving direct orders from the PCB hierarchy regarding which players should and should not be picked for domestic cricket.

Don't think this is a bad thing, the domestic coaches and selectors in the past have picked players who have future with Pakistan anymore.

Well then what's the point of having coaches might aswell let Ramiz pick all the squads.

This is terrible

This is not how merit works

To be honest our sports reporters are never happy. Selectors in the past were accussed of bias, then they changed the selection system to include opposition coaches and even then there was criticism of bias.

It is on record that Hamad Azam's career and domestic performances suffered because his captain Sohail Tanvir never gave him an opportunity to bat up the order and Sohail kept coming in to bat even in the death overs because he viewed Hamad Azam as a threat. The PCB has the right to step in these situations to act as a check and balance.

I was speaking with a player today who was saying that domestic coaches are receiving direct orders from the PCB hierarchy regarding which players should and should not be picked for domestic cricket.

Might explain why we are seeing so many young players playing in domestic this season.

I was speaking with a player today who was saying that domestic coaches are receiving direct orders from the PCB hierarchy regarding which players should and should not be picked for domestic cricket.

But how the hell would PCB know who is good or who isn’t good across all of Pakistan and its provinces if they’re not there in person watching? Or at least the footage? There’s no they’re analyzing the footage of all players. You have to pick solid domestic coaches who are authentic. This is ridiculous. They are probably doing what some PPers do aka just read some stat sheets and go on stats alone without any regard for pacing innings, stroke play, technique, swing/seam.

As per a media report, 192 players who have taken part in a number of domestic tournaments - including the National T20 Cup and the Quaid-e-Azam trophy - have not been paid their monthly retainers or even match fees. Players have only been paid their daily expenses.

This is scandalous, I would love rambo raja to get interviewed for this by Athers. Shameful on the ack of Saheen Afridi injury travel fiasco.

Rambo looks like has no placee for Test cricket and domestic concerns only interested in t20 & pSL

So now the ex chairman that said he wont send his team to India, is now sitting in India doing media shows and insulting Pakistani cricketers there and laughing with Indians like Irfan Pathan.

Rameez Raja even called Misbah's shot stupid aswell... pathetic human being.

Lol - man what’s wrong. Seriously there’s fandom, but why is anyone that criticises Misbah public enemy no1 for you. Have some perspective. Hero worship is not healthy.

There are plenty reasons to be angry with Rambo but calling Misbah’s shot pathetic (which it was) is not one for them.

I find it hilarious for Ramiz to go in the media and his youtube channel to criticize the team and the players when he is one of the main architects of this dreadful WC campaign.

I would really like some of the other commentators to pull Ramiz up on how he completely undid a lot of good work by previous administrations. He needs to give an account of how awful he was as a chairman how and why our junior programme is rubbish and player development generally awful. He sits there mouthing meaningless nothings.

Ramiz is the one who promoted and marketed these teams as super stars. He is the one who promoted the BS that Babar has Virat Kohli type potential and deserves captaincy authority like Virat Kohli.

That’s exactly true. Nonetheless, Ramiz/Misbah are responsible for making Babar captain.

Ramiz is still stuck in 1992. He wanted to give Babar the same powers that IK had during his days as Pakistan captain.

What makes it more laughable is the fact that he thought Babar of all people could pull it off.

Babar was never captaincy material and I’ve been saying this for 4-5 years. You can see it from a mile away with certain players. With Babar you can because it doesn’t a genius to figure out that he’s simply incapable of leading a team because he’s a beta male.

I never seen such an emotionless and lost player like Babar. Not even in club cricket. Like Imad once said, he is just innocent from the outside. We don’t know how Babar is in the locker room. He is related to the infamous Akmals (friends of Misbah) after all.

I wonder if it was rameez that decided to not have the team focus on fitness

Ramiz is part of that tola which has suked life out of Pakistan cricket, a complete overhaul is required with no former player who retired before 2010 should even be within the radius of Pakistan cricket board

Although it was a mixed bag reign. About time we give Ramiz the credit where it is due. One of them being. Without PJL we wouldn't have seen such talented players selected in U19.

Another of his accomplishments was kicking Misbah-Waqar. We need to eliminate mediocrity from our cricket.

Nothing is more disastrous than the current era of Mohsin Naqvi. And everybody knows the reason why I called is disastrous... No explanation needed.

Rameez Raja patching things with Misbah, Waqar and Hafeez?

Misbah era was worst! That’s where Pakistan cricket downfall started.. never should’ve replaced Mickey Arthur..
with mickey and Sarfraz we were defiantly going down the right track one WC loss and it all finished.

but how many world cups we won if that was the reason they were sacked? been humiliated in every single one
not even been able to reach the semis

Another of his accomplishments was kicking Misbah-Waqar. We need to eliminate mediocrity from our cricket.
I agree but he undone all that hard work by giving Babar unlimited powers. The worst part of it was that he instructed super flat wickets to be prepared in tests to help him score runs.

Misbah only agreed to rameez raja! So Rameez can use Misbah’s son on commentary .. so his son can get selected for Pakistan.

Remove Misbah, his family and his Friends from PCB . Pakistan will win next 20 World Cup in India…

We are not winning anything for the next 20 years, forget the next 20 World Cup in India.

Our struggles go beyond Misbah, Naqvi, Rameez etc

Every problem has Misbah involved. Get rid of Misbah and your will see the difference

I know you hate Misbah but to claim his era was worse when we have numbers right in front of us is being plain delusional and ridiculous.

If you ever want to see why Pakistan doesn't make much progress, look at delusional thinking like this one. People so steeped in hate of one person, they lose all sense.

Misbah is not the real topic here actually.... Ramiz's reign was not more disastrous than the current one... Defeats after defeats...

Bro’s cricket knowledge is straight from Cricinfo’s refresh button. Never watched a full match, but out here preaching like he coached the team. No wonder he worships Misbah slow tuktuk , safe tuktuk , and his painfully tuktuk average…
