The Eoin Morgan Thread | Is he a Craftsman, Finisher or Just Overrated?

if all irish dudes that play hurling took up cricket they would be an unstopable fielding and batting unit...if only...

The man has ice running through his veins...what a player.

Morgan continues to remind me of a fairbrother/Thorpe type player when it comes to ODIs and T20s for england. A quality player in both forms of the game.

He is Irish not English, that's why the talent.

England itself has not produced any quality batsmen for a long time now.

OK I think I have come to the conclusion that Eoin is a bit of a traitor. I know he is a nice guy because we have mutual friends in Dublin who tell me he is a nice guy. But playing for England instead of Ireland?! I know it's all about the money but I dont think he really cares about England at all.

Eoin Morgan playing for england is no different to Robert Croft playing for england in my eyes. Ireland are not a fully associated International cricket nation. So dont see what issue here is?

Couldn't care less as long as he keeps knocking the runs in. What a brilliant talent!

Eoin Morgan the Wayne Rooney of cricket!!

This guy has impressed me the most from all the newcomer from the last year only if Pakistan could get soneone like him!!

Wayne Rooney and Morgan are similar though - they betrayed their home teams who nurtured them to chase silverware and money.

Too harsh? Maybe....

Bresnan = Lampard

Anderson = Beckham

Strauss = Terry

KP = Gerrard

Collingwood = Scholes

Harmison = Crouch

any more additions?

Agreed. If the guy has decided to make this a full time career and not be a "semi-pro" anymore, he deserves to make the most out of it. England is in the semis b/c of him and KP. Simple. Both imported in a way...

What a talent though. Both Morgan and David Warner in no time have created an impression. At least Warner opens, Morgan comes down the order and still averages 42+ with SR of 140+ in T20s.

This guy on current form is as good as it gets. All the shots, with an exemplary temperament to boot. Doesn't even look to be trying hard and the runs just tick over. Early days yet but has a a wider array of shots than Bevan and M Hussey who he might be compared to.

Superb Innings today
Absolutely marvelous

I was shocked at the repertoire of shots the man possesses

His composure, assesment of the situation, accelaration at will, effortless looking strokes remind me of Inzi.

Morgan is an exceptional T20, Odi player!

This guy is a world class batsmen and i expect great things from him in the future.

Saj brother....You have the means to talk to :umarakmal ....please tell him to learn from Morgan how to utilize the batting talent he has. There is no point of scoring 30s or 40s....Learn from Morgan how to put value to wicket and finish of games ...thanx

Brilliant Inning ....and wataplaya ...... :14:

superb....

bas aise hi aussies ki dhunai karte raho .....Well done...... :14:

I watched this match a bit and he was batting very sensible. couldnt watch the match ending but im happy ENGLAND won. what a player, pak has to think about this weakness and work on it, he has shown that he is a match winner. saved england from a beating to BD in odis this year.

i can see pak getting the england top order cheaply and morgan coming down the order and scoriong runs...just as hussey does

What a fantastic player he is.

He reminds me so much of Graham Thorpe in terms of technique and mental toughness. He probably has more shots at his disposal than Thorpe did and probably hits the ball in the air more than Thorpe did, but the similarity is there for all to see.

He seems like a mix between Thorpe and Fairbrother. Thats something England havent had in their ODI team for a long time. Looks like he will have a long and sucsessful ODI career!

Eoin Morgan is quickly establishing himself as one of the best finishers in the game right now. He is young and very promising. Can easily walk into any sides playing eleven ATM. Good for England to have such a player in their team.

He has all the shots and another good thing is his mental strength, he is so calm out there, just like Mohammad Yosuf and he brougt up his hundred with the winning stroke as well.

Well played young lad!

Amazing batting i have seen after a long time i wish he was a pakistani :)

Even if he was, he would probably still be playing for England!

Im just glad to see that Ireland can produce world class players. Now we just need to get them to stay in the country.

Good player this IRISH bloke.

God England are a joke of a team. How pathetic do you have to be to import players because your own are soft overrated hacks?

You might guess RA has strong opinions on this...

here's a new Urdu phrase for you, RA:

angoor khattay hain

Google it. ;-)

Morgan has impressed in both games. He seems to always thrive on pressure and also seems to keep a cool head. His ability to pick gaps in field using different angles with his shots is an art hes mastered well.

:umarakmal needs to learn from him. He is more talented than this Irish but lacks common sense.

Lol, how can you say he is more talented. Morgan is head and shoulders above anyone at this present moment, both in terms of talent and form.

And yet they're beating the Aussies....... :13:

Well in the past year, England have:
-Hold 2-0 ODI series lead
-Smashed Aussies in T20 WC final
-Won Ashes

Random Aussie, I would say you should be accustomed to getting beatings from English cricket team :yk

We all know your hate for Akmal jr but do you have to bring it into every thread that you post in?

Anyway Morgan has been looking impressive over the last few months. A gem of a player

His best quality is his steady head. He's remarkably cool headed for a 23 year old guy with barely any experience. Destined to be a limited overs great if he continues these match winning performances

Congratulations with maiden ton. He is a good player, but he should thank some of our bowlers as well who allowed him easy runs.

Wonderful innings today. Morgs is making it hard for the selectors. If Bell comes back, whom do they drop?

Eoin Morgan - Brilliant Finisher or Overrated?

As the title says, is Eoin Morgan overated ?

Apart from the first test match, where he was lucky to score a century, he has not done nothing much since, against the mighty Pakistan bowling attack...

Pakistan have brought him back down to earth !!

he's a very good player, he will shine against the aussies. and don't forget, there's still a test to go, he could play another match winning knock.

Ofcourse he is,shouldnt be playing test cricket.but then again a ton is a ton

is very good in LOIs though

He is an excellent player of pace and bounce. Can't play swing. And definately can't play spin. He was so bad in the IPL because he can't play on turning tracks.

I am quite sure he has scored more runs than KP in this series so far so would you say KP is overrated too?

He has faced one of the best bowling attacks in conditions which have suited swing-bowling and still averaging 35 in the series. That is not bad at all. He will only get better.

I love watching him when he is in shape. Dont know what's up with him nowadays. Bad luck to be out of form so early in one's career.

he' facing good bowlers in testing conditions looks the goods to me and please stop making such threads till the series finishes might eat the humble pie like that Swann thread.

You think this thread is a curse ? :13:

At this stage I don't think anyone can judge whether Morgan is overrated.

Whilst the selectors like what they see of him, overall England set-up is still feeling out whether he is suitable test player. He got a century after Pak gave him a few chances but there are plenty of batsmen who have been given chances and not capitalised.

On the bouncy pitches of Oz he may well come good, especially given they don't have a decent spinner.

eoin morgan is a traitor. i hope he fails in all international matches. he should have been playing for ireland itself. given the way ireland is progressing, he would have got a chance to play test cricket within 2-3 years for ireland

He is a very talented player and will become a good test player he has just started too early to say that he is overrated

He is definitely a very good batsman of the shorter formats..But I think he'll come good in test cricket too. He needs time.. It's too early to judge him. Don't forget he's been facing an excellent bowling attack in this series.

Hes shown hes already hes a quality T20 and ODI player.

Hasnt played many tests to make a judgement call as a Test player yet.

Its hard to make as judgement...hes green and hes struggled in a series in testing conditions against a top attack...
I wouldnt dismiss him based on this series...give him the aussie series atleast...

His heart is elsewhere... in Ireland... how can he possibly provide more than just a handful good knocks for England? The english should be happy that their South African and Irish imports are at least keeping them on a respectable level in cricket.

Umar Akmal though... no such excuses for him.

Gotta agree with you there.

No self respect or pride. Disgraceful to betray your own country.

Back on topic? Overrated by the English. He's good, but not THAT good.

Well, its not like he alone is failing

Apart from Prior and Trott (to some extent). Almost every batsman from both the sides have had a poor time of it.
Morgan atleast had one big score to his name

The quality of the bowling + conditions make it very difficult conditions to bat, so I'll reserve judgement on him

The media made him out to be the dogs Bo***x, even so the English commentators...i guess they all have been proved wrong..

2 test match failures in conditions and quality of oppositions where almost every other batsman in the top order along side him have failed, atleast for me, is not enough to say hes over rated

He is not over rated one bit. This guys the real deal.
Very explosive, elegant batsmen.

He's a decent prospect.

Brilliant limited overs player. Very tough to get out. He will progress in tests and will start scoring runs as his career moves on. He's shown in the past that he can play under pressule, extremely well.

English media/fans overrate every player. Just like any fan would do. He is good, though.

How many batsmen on either side have scored a test 100 during the English summer?

That should answer your question.

You have to see the performance of others around him against the same attacks and in the same conditions and the majority of the batsmen have had a very poor time of it all, so its harsh to rate Morgan based on these tests alone

Yes but others have not been rated soo highly as Morgan by the media and the English commentators since the T20 WC.
