For Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick, Friday’s remarkable 8-2 hammering of Barcelona must have felt like the most wonderful deja-vu imaginable.

Flick had sat on the bench in Belo Horizonte in 2014 as assistant to Germany head coach Joachim Loew, as Germany handed five-times world champions Brazil their worst ever World Cup defeat with a shocking 7-1 victory.

If that will be remembered as one of the greatest performances by a German team, it will now be run close by what Bayern produced at an empty Estadio da Luz on Friday.

The trauma of “The 7-1” still reverberates through Brazilian football, the sense of embarrassment and anger at the loss, the fierce debates over blame and then search for solutions, continues even six years on.

It is hard to imagine how long it will take Barcelona to get over the impact of “The 8-2” but while the Brazilians had four years to get themselves sorted for the next World Cup, no such breathing space exists for Barca.

Luiz Felipe Scolari resigned as Brazil manager the day after the conclusion of that World Cup and it appears Barcelona coach Quique Setien will leave his post with even greater haste.

If he does, he surely won’t be the only one to pay the price for a ragged performance, in which his side appeared to throw in the towel in the latter stages.

“I think that right now it’s too soon to be talking about whether I stay at the club or not,” Setien said in the immediate aftermath.

“The reality is that it doesn’t depend on me. It’s worth all of us working out what’s important and considering a wide range of things which correspond to a defeat of this importance and which is so painful.”

SIGNS OF DECLINE

Such an inquest will begin right away in the local press which is unlikely to be sparing in its criticism.

Barca won their fifth European Cup in 2015 and the signs of decline have been evident over the past five years since — but no-one envisaged a fall as great as this.

The days when Andres Iniesta and Xavi produced the wonderful midfield passing dominance behind the wonders of Lionel Messi and Neymar, allied with Pep Guardiola’s tactics left the continent purring at Barcelona’s class, feel increasingly distant.

Children across all corners of the world chose to wear the clubs famous blaugrana striped shirts, just to be associated with the wonderful brand of football Barca were producing. But it will be the club’s hardcore support in the Catalan city who will be demanding change.

Barcelona have paid the price for the failings in recruitment, bringing in too many players who weren’t up to the club’s standards.

When they have signed players of undoubted quality, too often they have failed to integrate them into the team.

Nothing highlighted that more than sight of Philippe Coutinho, signed for more than 100 million pounds ($130.84 million) from Liverpool but now loaned out to Bayern, scoring twice in the final minutes against a defence that stood almost motionless.

The ‘Barca way’ is a team that wins playing attractive, entertaining football and this loss and the manner of the defeat was so far away from that ethos, that it is surely going to take a very painful process to rediscover it.

Barcelona manager Quique Setien has reportedly already been sacked after his side suffered a humiliating 8-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The 61-year-old was only appointed in January but is expected to be relieved of his duties after the devastating loss in Lisbon, according to Sky Sport Italia.

Barcelona were completely outclassed and overpowered by a ruthless Bayern, who had already scored four after just 31 minutes.
Bayern turned the screw after the break - despite a brief rally from the Spanish side - to inflict the worst defeat on Barcelona since 1940 with Philippe Coutinho rubbing salt in the wounds by scoring the final two goals against his parent club off the bench.

At full time Setien told reporters: 'Right now we feel enormous frustration and all we can do is make conclusions and think about the future.

'Barca is a club that is so great that this will cause us a lot of damage and obviously some things will have to change.

'The truth is this is a tremendously painful defeat.

'Barcelona want to recover their identity. Right now, it's too soon to think about whether I will stay or not. It doesn't depend on me.

'We have to reflect, taking the situation into account and the importance that such a humiliating and painful defeat means.

'I'm hurt, evidently, by such a hefty defeat.'The way it came about has been tremendously painful.

'I'm not worried about my future right now, but a defeat that is very painful for the club and the fans.'I know what a defeat of this calibre means.

'We have to analyse what happened today from a bigger perspective. I know that the credibility of a coach diminishes when something like this happens. This isn't what worries me at the moment.

'We have to accept the defeat how it is. We were beaten by a very good team.'Apart from the first few minutes, they were clearly better than us for the rest of the game.'

Barca defender Gerard Pique has confessed 'we've hit rock bottom' and insisted the club must make structural changes to become competitive in Europe once again.

When asked to reflect on Pique's assessment, Setien said: 'This reflection from a player that has been here his whole life indicates something.'

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has had his say on Setien's future and expressed symathy for the Spanish coach.

'I think a club, when it's that big or that bad, they always make a decision really quick to appease people' Carragher told CBS Sports.

'I feel sorry for the coach. I look at (Josep Maria) Bartomeu who came on, that's a decision almost looking after themselves. It had to be made. There was no way he could continue as the coach.

'If they hadn't won the Champions League this season I don't think he would be there next season anyway. He had to go, but I think it's a decision made quickly to appease people.

'I think the Barcelona fans are educated enough to know it isn't about this manager. It's about bigger things. It's about people at the top of the club and these (presidential) elections need to be brought forward 12 months (from 2021).'

The club's President Josep Bartomeu also admitted afterwards that huge changes are necessary and that some decisions have already been taken with reports elsehwhere suggesting that Director of Football Eric Abidal will join Setien as fall guys for Friday's embarrassing exit.

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has already been identified as Barcelona's prime candidate to replace Setien.

Gerard Pique says big changes are needed at Barcelona following their "humiliating" 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The 33-year-old defender, who has won 20 major titles over 12 years with the club, added that he would be "the first to leave" if the club wished it.

Friday's loss was the heaviest Barca have suffered in Europe and ends a season that has also seen them lose the Spanish league title to Real Madrid.

"We have hit rock bottom," said Pique.

"This is not the first, nor the second, nor the third time. We are not on the right path."

He continued: "Coaches and players follow one another, but it has been several years since we have been able to be competitive on a European level.

"We all have to think internally and decide what is best for the club, for Barca. Tonight was unacceptable for Barcelona.

"It's very hard to take but I hope it will be useful for something, for us to all think about it.

"The club needs changes. And I'm not talking at the level of the coach or the players, but structurally the club needs changes of all kinds.

"We must bring in new blood to change this dynamic, and if necessary, I would be the first to leave."

Barca have a presidential election in the summer of 2021, to seek a successor to incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Barcelona head coach Quique Setien was already under pressure heading into the quarter-final tie following a disappointing seven months in charge after succeeding Ernesto Valverde in January.

When asked about the future of the club and Pique's comments, he responded: "I'm not going to talk about what is needed at the club. I've been here for just a few months.

"If Gerard says that it's time for big changes there's going to be importance to his words. It's time for us to review and take the decisions which are needed for the future."

When asked to address his own future at the Nou Camp, he said: "I think that right now it's too soon to be talking about whether I stay at the club or not. The reality is that it doesn't depend on me.

"It's worth all of us working out what's important and considering a wide range of things which correspond to a defeat of this importance and which is so painful."

Ronald Koeman: Barcelona could pick Netherlands manager to replace Quique Setien

Barcelona manager Quique Setien is to be sacked on Monday and Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman could be the man to replace him, says Guillem Balague.

La Liga runners-up Barcelona were humiliated in an 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich as they crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage on Friday.

Setien, 61, was hired as Ernesto Valverde's replacement in January.

However, he failed to lead his side to a trophy in 2019-20.

Spanish football expert Balague says former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has "been approached", but ex-Barca player Koeman would be a more popular choice.

"The board will meet tomorrow and [Setien] will be sacked," Balague told the BBC 5 Live Euro Leagues podcast. "They have to choose a manager because in two weeks time pre-season starts - and the talk is Koeman could be the man

"He said no to an offer in January, but this is different. I think his health situation may have played a part. Discussions may be taking place, we may hear tomorrow, but he will need to separate from the national side so there is still a wait for that to happen.

"He is a name who will, more or less, make everybody happy."

Former Everton and Southampton manager Koeman, 57, who was appointed as Netherlands manager in February 2018, was rushed to hospital in May with chest complaints but said afterwards he felt "fit as a fiddle".

Pochettino, who has been out of work since being sacked by Tottenham after five years in charge in November, is also being linked with the role.

According to Balague, the Argentine is in the running but his appointment would not be a well received by the fans, due to his history as both a player and manager for local rivals Espanyol.

Instead, Koeman may oversee a "year of transition" before ex-Barca midfielder Xavi, currently in charge of Qatari club Al Sadd, would arrive.

3 consecutive UCL knockout exits (Roma 3-0, Liverpool 4-0, Bayern 8-2), each more embarrassing than the one before. Their transfer business has been completely all over the place, splashing money here there and everywhere. Their 3 100+ mil players all didn't start, one of them on loan to the opposing team and he got 2 goals and an assist against them!

They have clear structural problems, the likes of which countless new managers and blind spending won't fix, and in some cases has made it worse. Despite all the changes and spending and everything, they are still entirely reliant on ageing Messi and Suarez. They need a clear boardroom shuffle and a massive rethink of their executive planning and strategy, otherwise Barca, by far and away the best team in the world 5 years ago, are going to continue to slump further.

What is the way forward for Barcelona?

Setien was sacked in a meeting with technical director Eric Abidal just days after the humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Ronald Koeman, strongly tipped to be the new Barcelona boss, says he would like the job but that nothing has been finalised yet.

The 57-year-old, who is manager of the Netherlands, is set to join the La Liga runners-up this week.

When the former Barca player was asked if he wanted to return, he said: "I'd like to, but it'll only be confirmed once I've signed the deal.

"Until then, I cannot say any more about it - even though I'd like to."

Koeman played for the Catalan giants between 1989 and 1995, helping the club to four league titles and the European Cup.

His contract with the Dutch FA runs until the 2022 World Cup.

Barcelona parted company with sporting director Eric Abidal on Tuesday, one day after relieving head coach Quique Setien of his duties.

The dismissals come after the club's humiliating 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League last eight on Friday.

Barcelona said: "The club would publicly like to thank Eric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and the close and positive nature of his relationship with all aspects of the blaugrana [Barcelona] family."

Meanwhile, Barca's German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 28, will be sidelined for 10 weeks after an operation on his right knee.

Director of Football Eric Abidal has left Barcelona

Ronald Koeman will be the new manager of Barcelona, says club president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

The 57-year-old, who is currently in charge of the Netherlands, is set to join the La Liga runners-up this week.

Speaking on Tuesday night, Bartomeu said: "Koeman is the one we've chosen. If nothing goes wrong he will be the head coach next season."

Former Netherlands and Barca defender Koeman flew to Barcelona on Tuesday to finalise a deal with the club.

There have been rumours that the team's star Lionel Messi could leave but Bartomeu said: "Messi wants to end his career at Barca, he has said that many times.

"I have spoken with Koeman and the pillar of our project is Messi.

"He has a contract until 2021, I speak a lot with Leo and more regularly with his father.

"He is number one in the world. There is no doubt that in Koeman's new project you can count on Messi."

Bartomeu indicated a squad overhaul was now going to take place.

"The renewal will be as deep as necessary," he said. "I decided to give this generation the opportunity for another year. Maybe it was time to start the renovation last year.

"There is money but Covid-19 has reduced income so we have to reduce payroll to be able to bring in new footballers.

"The easiest thing would be to resign but I am not doing it because of my responsibility to the club. It is not a club crisis. It is just a sports crisis, which we must fix."

Koeman, who played for the Catalan giants between 1989 and 1995 and helped them to four league titles and the European Cup, has a contract with the Dutch FA which runs until the 2022 World Cup.

Earlier on Tuesday, when the former Barca player was asked if he wanted to return as manager, he said: "I'd like to, but it'll only be confirmed once I've signed the deal.

"Until then, I cannot say any more about it - even though I'd like to."

Ronald Koeman: Barcelona name former player as new head coach

Ronald Koeman has been named the new head coach of Barcelona two days after the club sacked Quique Setien.

The 57-year-old left his role as Netherlands boss, with two years left on his contract, to sign a two-year deal with the Spanish giants.

He played for Barcelona between 1989 and 1995, helping them to four league titles and the European Cup.

It is sad to see Barcelona in this state. Chaos and poor decisions in the boardroom, young players not being backed, old players who are happy to sit on their contracts , and bad decisions in recruitment.

I think it will get worse when Messi leaves or retires unless Barcelona sort the boardroom and recruitment out.

Georginio Wijnaldum: Ronald Koeman wants Liverpool midfielder in pivotal Barcelona role

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman wants Liverpool's Georginio Wijnaldum to play a pivotal role in his rebuilding project at the Nou Camp.

Reports coming out of Barcelona which suggest that Wijnaldum has already agreed terms with the La Liga club are incorrect.

Wijnaldum, 29, is in the final year of his current deal and understood to be keen to stay at Anfield if agreement on an extension can be reached.

However, negotiations to extend that contract have yet to take place.

Liverpool manager Klopp insisted last week he was relaxed about his midfielder's contract situation and as yet there has been no contact between the two clubs.

Koeman worked closely with the Liverpool midfielder during his time as Netherlands boss.

Wijnaldum will be 30 in November. He moved to Liverpool from Newcastle United in a £25m deal in July 2016.

Since, he has scored 19 goals in 186 appearances under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool have been continually linked with Bayern Munich's Thiago Alcantara throughout the summer.

It is understood the Premier League champions would only look to bring in a midfielder if one were to depart.

Barcelona forward Luis Suarez has agreed to join Juventus, reports BBC Radio 5 Live's Guillem Balague.

Suarez will move to Serie A on a free transfer - or perhaps a nominal fee - if he can negotiate his release from the Spanish giants.

The Uruguayan has a year to run on a contract he signed in 2016 but if he played 60% of games during 2020-21 it would be extended for another year.

Suarez would be happy to be paid off with one season's wages.

Italian media reported on Friday that he would also need to pass a citizenship test to play in Italy - he has a Uruguayan passport and played in Spain thanks to his wife's Italian passport, enough to be considered European in La Liga.

The 33-year-old's move has no bearing on the future of his friend Lionel Messi.

Suarez and Messi - along with their families - are close but Messi's decision over whether to stay or remain at the Nou Camp will not be affected by his team-mate's move.

Suarez's switch to Turin will see him line up along Messi's great rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Suarez joined Barcelona from Liverpool for £74m in 2014 and has scored 198 goals in 283 appearances.

After moving from Anfield to Barcelona, he enjoyed huge levels of success, forming part of a devastating front three, alongside Messi and Brazil star Neymar.

The trio led Barca to a league, cup and Champions League treble in 2014-15 and the club would also win three more league titles, another three Copa del Rey trophies, two Spanish Super Cups, the Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup during Suarez's time there.

But he and Messi have been unable to inspire Barca to another Champions League success, meaning it is five years since they won Europe's premier club competition.

They finished last season without a trophy after being beaten to the title by fierce rivals Real Madrid.

Jose Maria Bartomeu: Barcelona president set to face vote while Quique Setien sues club

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is set to face a vote of no-confidence after a campaign seeking his removal gained the necessary backing.

Bartomeu, who became president in 2014, has come under increasing pressure, notably when star striker Lionel Messi handed in a transfer request in August.

A motion to remove Bartomeu was filed the day after Messi's transfer request.

A total of 20,731 signatures have now backed the motion, meaning Bartomeu should face a vote over his position.

Some 16,500 signatures were needed and as long as that number is cleared when the signed documents are verified, 57-year-old Bartomeu will be the subject of a referendum within three months.

The potential referendum will be undertaken by the club's 150,000 members and if 66.5% of them vote against him his time at the club will come to a premature end.

Bartomeu is due to step down in March, having served the maximum two terms as club president.

But he looks set to become only the third president to face a vote of no-confidence after Josep Lluis Nunez in 1998 and Joan Laporta in 2008, though both survived the subsequent referendums.

Messi has agreed to stay at the club but resentment against Bartomeu has been growing in the past year due to worsening finances and the team's decline on the pitch, which saw them lift no major silverware last season.

Meanwhile, former manager Quique Setien and three of his assistants also announced on Thursday that they are suing the club for failing to fulfil the terms of their contracts after being sacked last month.

They claim they only received written notice of their contracts being terminated on 16 September, despite his sacking taking place on 17 August.

Setien said he had not received any compensation and that a letter sent to him by the club on Wednesday "revealed the clear intention from the club to not comply with contracts we signed on 14 January 2020."

Barcelona have failed in an attempt to sign Max Aarons from Norwich City, despite the right-back agreeing personal terms with the La Liga giants.

After a turbulent summer, Barcelona are confronted by several serious doubts as they return to La Liga action on Sunday at home to Villarreal - and visiting coach Unai Emery will be looking to make a major impact with his new team.

With Barca seemingly in disarray, BBC Sport poses five key questions facing the Catalan giants as they attempt to dispel the theory they are a fast-fading force.

Can Koeman convince Messi?
It's impossible to begin an analysis of Barca's plight with any subject other than Lionel Messi, following the captain's aborted attempt to leave and his subsequent outbursts against unpopular president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Messi made it clear on Friday that he is still very unhappy with the club, making a scathing point in his farewell message to departing team-mate Luis Suarez, who has joined Atletico Madrid.

"You deserved a farewell fitting who you are: one of the most important players in the history of the club. Not to be kicked out like you were. But the truth is by now, nothing surprises me," Messi wrote on Instagram.

For better or worse, incoming coach Ronald Koeman still has no choice but to centre the team's rebuilding process around the Argentine, whose demeanour and attitude will continue to be endlessly analysed over the coming weeks.

Messi will be free to sign a pre-contract with another club in January, so Koeman has limited time to convince the skipper that he can build a team worth hanging around for.

If the coach doesn't quickly succeed in improving the captain's dark mood, it could turn very ugly, very soon.

Who will play up front?
Allowing Suarez to leave was partly symbolic, with Bartomeu pointedly dismantling the ageing team that suffered Champions League humiliation against Bayern Munich.

But it is also pragmatic: the club is broke - hence the acceptance of Wolves' bid for Nelson Semedo despite Bartomeu previously describing him as non-transferable - and Suarez's departure takes a significant strain off a crippling wage bill.

Barca's top La Liga scorers in 2019-20
Lionel Messi - 25 Antoine Griezmann - 9
Luis Suarez - 16 Arturo Vidal - 8

It also leaves the question of who will lead the line. There is no lack of attacking quality, with Messi joined by expensive misfits Antoine Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, plus talented youngsters Ansu Fati and Trincao.

But other than the injured Martin Braithwaite, there is nobody who could be classified as a centre forward.

Koeman is expected to field Messi as a false nine, but the Argentine will always drop into the same deeper areas that Griezmann and Coutinho also like to occupy - one of the main reasons they have both struggled to shine.

So the coach has the tactical task of devising a system which encourages his gifted forwards to operate collectively rather than individuals, including the challenge of maintaining a penalty box presence from a squad lacking out-and-out strikers.

If Koeman solves those riddles, the results could be spectacular. But can it be done?

Where are the defenders?
The 8-2 embarrassment against Bayern made it pretty clear that Barca have defensive issues, but Koeman has a startling lack of options to resolve them.

Semedo's departure means the squad's only right-back is Sergi Roberto, who is really a converted midfielder.

On the other flank, 31-year-old Jordi Alba remains first choice despite an alarming drop in performances over the past two years, while the club's desire to sell injury-hit Samuel Umtiti would also leave scarce central options.

The club is attempting to recruit, with Ajax's Sergino Dest, Norwich full-back Max Aarons and Eric Garcia of Manchester City on the wish list. But the dire financial situation outlined above leaves Barca in a weak position, with no guarantees that proven new faces will arrive.

And just to round things off, goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, so often the team's saviour, will be missing through injury until November.

Can Miralem Pjanic (left) move ahead of Sergio Busquets to partner Frenkie de Jong (right) in midfield?
As much as the identity or quality of the individual players, the team's demise has been based on the lack of compactness in their overall shape.

The wide open spaces between attack and defence have often left the midfield overrun and unable to repel rapid counter-attacks. That weakness was most brutally exploited by Bayern but it was also regularly evident in La Liga, where Barca conceded 13 more goals than Real Madrid last season.

Koeman will attempt to instil greater solidity by employing a 4-2-3-1 formation, with fellow Dutchman Frenkie de Jong joined by either Sergio Busquets or new signing Miralem Pjanic in midfield.

But unless the back four pushes higher up the field and the forward line of Messi, Coutinho and company are cajoled into playing their part defensively, it remains doubtful whether a more effective, collective structure can emerge.

Will Bartomeu be forced out?
Overshadowing everything behind the scenes is the fate of beleaguered president Bartomeu, who faces a vote of no confidence after more than 20,000 club members signed a formal motion against him.

Bartomeu's term of office expires in March regardless of that process, but his opponents are desperate to make him leave as soon as possible - partly in the hope of persuading Messi to stay beyond this season.

A great strength of Barca's ownership model - the club belongs to its 140,000 members - is that ordinary fans can exert a genuine influence over the running of the club (imagine, for example, if Manchester United fans were able to force out their owners the Glazer family in the same way Bartomeu is being ejected from the Camp Nou).

But that also inevitably leads to endless rounds of political in-fighting, and those bitter squabbles could form an unpleasant backdrop to a challenging season which is threatening to unravel before it has even begun.

Ajax right-back Sergino Dest is having a medical at Barcelona before signing for a reported 20m euros (£18m).

The 19-year-old came through the Ajax academy and broke into the Dutch champions' first team in 2019.

Sergino Dest: Barcelona sign Ajax defender for £19m

Barcelona have signed 19-year-old Ajax right-back Sergino Dest for an initial 21m euros (£18.9m).

The fee could rise by a further 5m euros (£4.5m) depending on variables.

Netherlands-born Dest, who has won three caps for the United States, has signed a five-year deal with a buyout clause of 400m euros (£359m).

Barcelona will present him at a press conference on Friday, and he could make his debut against Sevilla in La Liga at the Nou Camp on Sunday.

Manager Ronald Koeman has signed Dest as a possible replacement for Portugal international Nelson Semedo, who joined Wolves in September.

A Spanish journalist has apologised after comparing Barcelona's Ansu Fati to a black street vendor in their 5-1 Champions League win over Ferencvaros.

Fati, 17, scored and made a goal in Tuesday's match and was supported by team-mate Antoine Griezmann on Twitter.

Griezmann said: "Ansu is an exceptional boy who deserves respect like any human being. No to racism and no to rudeness."

Fati is the first player under 18 to score two Champions League goals.

Salvador Sostres' match report in Spanish newspaper ABC had likened the Spain winger to a "black street vendor" who "you suddenly see running" when the police arrive.

In an apology published by ABC on Thursday, Sostres said that he was attempting to "praise the beauty of Ansu's movements" and was "deeply sorry for any misunderstanding".

Poor Koeman - the knives are already out for him among certain sections of the media and fans.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has resigned following increasing fan pressure and a public fall-out with Lionel Messi.

The power of Messi strikes again.

Fifa says it is not aware of any agreement for Barcelona to join a European Super League.

Outgoing Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu said the club had begun proceedings as he announced his resignation on Tuesday.

Bartomeu stepped down, along with the entire board of directors, after facing increasing pressure from fans.

Last week, it was revealed that talks had taken place over the creation of a new £4.6bn European Premier League.

It would involve the top sides from across the continent, although discussions are at an early stage.

In a statement, Fifa - football's world governing body - said: "Fifa is not aware of any agreement.

"As we already said last week, the topic of a so-called "European Super League" comes up every now and then and Fifa has no wish to comment further on this since there are already well-established football institutional structures to deal with it."

Barcelona presidential frontrunner Victor Font wants Pep Guardiola to return to the club and has "no doubt" Lionel Messi will stay.

Current president Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned earlier this week, along with his board of directors, ahead of an expected vote of no confidence next month.

It comes after months of widespread criticism over the club's worsening finances and the team's decline on the pitch, which came to a head with their 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals in August.

Font has quickly become the frontrunner to succeed Bartomeu and exclusively told Sky Sports News he has a clear plan to bring back the glory days to La Liga giants involving the old Barca dynasty breathing new life into the current one.

Lionel Messi's contract at Barcelona expires in the summer of 20210:29

Lionel Messi is far more likely to stay at Barcelona and sign a new contract with the club following the departure of president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

"Replacing the best generation the world of football has ever seen, which I believe we have had over the last decade, is a big challenge," Font said.

"Particularly at a time when competition is intense and many clubs are owned by very powerful owners.

"FC Barcelona also need a significant investment to rebuild the stadium and all in a world which has been hit with one of the worst crises ever (coronavirus).

"It is clear we need a very solid plan to meet these challenges and this is what we have been doing over the last few years.

"It is our intention to build a very strong and competitive project and we are very lucky at Barca that we inherited a style of play that Johan Cruyff instilled throughout the organisation.

"And most of the best professionals who know about this style are also fans and love the club - like Pep Guardiola, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol.

"They are all legends that love Barcelona but do not work for Barca today - we need to bring them back to ensure we will have a very competitive project.

"The only thing Messi needs is to know he is part of a competitive project that aspires to win the next Champions League.

"We have no doubt that if we basically have the honour to take the helm of FC Barcelona we will be able to achieve that (Messi staying)."

Bartomeu did not go quietly as he resigned from his role as Barcelona president, revealing the club had accepted a proposal to join a future European super league as he stepped down.

The plans involve Europe's biggest football clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, joining a new FIFA-backed tournament that would reshape the sport's global landscape.

Sky News has learned that financiers are assembling a $6 billion (£4.6 billion) funding package to assist the creation of what could become known as the European Premier League.

More than a dozen teams from England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain are in negotiations about becoming founder members of the competition.

However, Font has been left bemused by Bartomeu's statement on a competition that doesn't exist - although hasn't ruled out anything himself at this stage.

Outgoing Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu couldn't help but go out with a bang by revealing plans for a European Super League, says Spanish football expert Semra Hunter.

"I was very surprised by that statement because I know the project is not a reality at this moment in time," Font added.

"So joining a competition that does not exist is kind of weird to say the least.

"If we have the honour to take the reigns of FC Barcelona we would be very much interested in understanding what type of alternatives there are and what type of interesting projects there are in the world of football and then based on that, we will make decisions.

"When I've been asked about this in the past I have always said that making whatever top European competition better, which is currently the Champions League, is something we should aspire to do.

"But at the same time having a strong national championship is good for the sport and footballing ecosystem."

Messi looked set to leave Barcelona this summer after falling out with the club's hierarchy. But now Bartomeu and the rest of the board have resigned, what does it mean for the future of Messi?

Messi demanded to leave Barcelona over the summer, criticising the board publicly in the process, after his relationship with the club's president had soured.

Although Barcelona managed to keep Messi, in part due to his €700m release clause, their chances of retaining the Argentina international beyond this season appeared remote with his contract set to expire, but has the situation now changed?

Barcelona now four games without a league win after Alaves draw

Barcelona failed to win for the fourth successive La Liga game after being held by 10-man Alaves.

The hosts, who started the day 15th in the table, took a surprise lead when Brazilian keeper Neto was dispossessed by Luis Rioja.

Alaves were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Jota was sent off for a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.

Antoine Griezmann equalised a minute later but Barca could not find a winner.

Ansu Fati was denied a goal on his 18th birthday by Fernando Pacheco's excellent save, while Griezmann had a goal ruled out.

Pacheco frustrated Barca with further saves to keep out Lionel Messi, Miralem Pjanic and Sergino Dest.

While Barcelona top their Champions League group after wins over Juventus and Ferencvaros, they trail leaders Real Madrid by eight points in La Liga after dropping 10 points in six games.

"We are very angry because we really wanted the three points and we have to improve a lot," said Griezmann.

"We are missing a lot of chances, me more than anyone, but it's still early in the season and I know we're going to get better."

Substitute Messi helps Barcelona to first league win in five games

Half-time substitute Lionel Messi turned the game around for Barcelona as they beat Real Betis for a first La Liga win in five games.

Ousmane Dembele gave Barca the lead with a powerful effort and Antoine Griezmann had a penalty saved.

Antonio Sanabria smashed home an equaliser just before half-time.

But Messi came on at the break and had a hand in Griezmann's equaliser and scored twice himself before teenager Pedri hit a late fifth.

The Barca captain dummied Alba's pass, taking two defenders and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo out of the equation, to leave Griezmann with a tap-in.

He then put Barca ahead from the penalty spot after Aissa Mandi was sent off for handling Dembele's shot on the line - a decision made after a lengthy video assistant referee review.

Messi played a one-two with Sergi Roberto, who backheeled the ball into his path and he smashed it into the roof of the net.

That was his first goal of the season for club or country which was not a penalty. The previous six had all been from the spot.

He thought he had a hat-trick afterwards but his goal was disallowed for a Roberto offside.

It was a much needed win for Ronald Koeman, whose side had only picked up two points from the previous four league games.

They move up to eighth, one point behind Real Betis.

Pique injured as Barcelona beaten by Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid moved level on points with La Liga leaders Real Sociedad after beating Barcelona, who are now nine points adrift of the top two.

Yannick Carrasco scored the only goal on the stroke of half-time, driving in from midway inside the Barcelona half with goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen having tried to beat him to the ball.

Barcelona also lost defender Gerard Pique to injury to cap a bad night.

Pique looked visibly upset as he hobbled off in the second half.

Barcelona confirmed after the game that Pique had sprained his right knee and are "waiting for more tests to ascertain the extent of the injury".

There is no timescale on how long Pique could be out for but reports in Spain suggest he could be sidelined for up to six months.

Barcelona rarely looked like rescuing a point from the game, with Jan Oblak's save from a Clement Lenglet header the closest the visitors game.

The result leaves Barcelona 10th in La Liga. They have 11 points from eight games, nine behind Sociedad, who are only ahead of Atletico on goals scored, both having the same goal difference, although Atletico have a game in hand.

This win continued Atletico's unbeaten start to the season and stretched their unbeaten run to 24 games in all competitions, while it was Barca's third defeat in eight La Liga games.

Lionel Messi was unusually subdued, although the forward had only returned from a long trip to South America on Thursday after international duty with Argentina.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique will be out for a reported three to five months with knee ligament injuries.

Pique, 33, sprained the internal lateral ligament in his right knee and suffered a partial injury to the anterior cruciate ligament during Saturday's defeat by Atletico Madrid.

Barcelona will also be without defender Sergi Roberto for two months after he ruptured a thigh muscle.

The 1-0 loss was Barca's third in eight La Liga games, leaving them 10th.

Barcelona's players have agreed to wage cuts that will save the Spanish club 122m euros (£110m).

The 26-time La Liga champions have also agreed with their players to have about €50m (£45m) of variable payments deferred over a three-year period.

Their last accounts showed a 97m euros (£87m) loss while the net debt more than doubled to 488m euros (£438m).

"[This] will be a milestone of great importance to redirect the current economic situation," the club said.

In March, Barcelona's players agreed to take a 70% pay cut during the coronavirus pandemic and make additional contributions to ensure non-sporting staff received full wages.

Police in Catalonia have reportedly arrested former Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, and other high-ranking officials, following a raid of the club’s Nou Camp offices on Monday.

The raid relates to the ‘Barcagate’ scandal from last year, in which it was claimed the club had paid a social media company to plant online criticism of key Barcelona figures.

The club vehemently denied the allegations that saw Lionel Messi, Pep Guardiola, Xavi and Gerard Pique among those reportedly targeted by I3 Ventures.

On Monday, Cadena SER reported that Bartomeu had been arrested by the Catalan police, along with three other men.

Chief executive Oscar Grau, legal head Roman Gomez and Bartomeu’s former advisor Jaume Masferrer were also detained.

Barcelona released a statement on Monday confirming they have offered their full cooperation to the investigation.

The statement read: “Regarding the entry and search by the Catalan Police force this morning at the Camp Nou offices by order of the Instructing Court number 13 in Barcelona, which is in charge of the case relating to the contacting of monitoring services on social networks, FC Barcelona have offered up their full collaboration to the legal and police authorities to help make clear facts which are subject to investigation.

“The information and documentation requested by the judicial police force relate strictly to the facts relative to this case.

“FC Barcelona express its utmost respect for the judicial process in place and for the principle of presumed innocence for the people affected within the remit of this investigation.”

Police had also conducted a search of the Barcelona offices last July with more documents seized.

Once the ‘Barcagate’ claims emerged in early 2020, former chief Bartomeu admitted to hiring I3 Ventures for social media analysis but insisted the agreement had no link to criticism of Messi or anyone else.

An external audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers was commissioned, which found no wrongdoing on the club’s behalf and the contracts were cancelled.

But the police launched an investigation following a complaint by eight club members.

Pique, one of the players allegedly targeted, spoke out about the allegations last October.

He said: “It’s a disgrace the club actually spent money to criticise us.

“It’s an atrocity as a Barcelona player to see my club spending money – money they’re now asking for from us – to criticise not just external people with a previous relationship to the club, but players still here.”

Bartomeu stepped down as president of the club last October following the high-profile falling out with Messi that resulted in their star player trying to force a move away.

Barcelona: Joan Laporta elected president for a second time

Joan Laporta has been named as Barcelona president for a second time after winning the club's election.

Laporta, whose central pledge was to keep Lionel Messi at the club, won more than 54% of the vote.

The 58-year-old, who oversaw the appointment of Pep Guardiola as head coach in his previous spell at the club between 2003-2010, succeeds Josep Maria Bartomeu who resigned in October.

Victor Font was second with 30% of the vote, with Toni Freixa a distant third.

Barcelona said 55,611 of its 109,531 eligible members voted in the election, which was postponed from January because of coronavirus restrictions in Catalonia.

Laporta signed the likes of Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho and former Cameroon forward Samuel Eto'o in his first stint as president, with the club winning the Champions League twice, four La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey.

Messi also emerged as a world star during that period and was among several current Barca players to vote in the election.

Amid champagne celebrations on Sunday evening, Laporta shouted: "Now let's go to Paris and see if we can make another 'remontada' [comeback] happen!

"Seeing Leo [Messi] go to vote, the best player in the world, voting with his son, for me, this shows what we've said all along, that Leo loves Barca, that we are all a big family. Hopefully that helps him to stay which is what we all want."

Barcelona face Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in the Champions League last 16, with a 4-1 deficit to make up from the opening leg.

Longer term, Laporta's task will be to rebuild a club in crisis, with crippling debts exacerbated by the pandemic and Messi considering leaving for free when his contract expires this summer.

Barcelona missed the chance to go top of La Liga as they suffered a surprise home defeat by Granada.

Lionel Messi had given the hosts the lead when he combined with Antoine Griezmann before slotting into the far corner.

Barcelona missed several opportunities to add to their lead before Darwin Machis drove in the equaliser in the second half.

Substitute Jorge Molina then headed in the winner for the visitors late on.

Victory would have put Barcelona one point clear at the top of the table with five games to go but instead they stay third, two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid and level with Real Madrid.

Barcelona ‘untouchables’ could be sold ahead of 2021/22

Barcelona look set for a summer of upheaval ahead of the start of the 2021/22 La Liga season.

Following their dramatic exit from the title race in the final weeks of the current campaign, serious doubts have been raised over Ronald Koeman‘s future at the Camp Nou.

However, according to the front page of Tuesday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo, certain key players could also be on their way out this summer.

Defender Sergi Roberto is one of the most likely to head for the Camp Nou exit as he enters into the final year of his contract.

Veteran duo Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique are also set for showdown talks with the club potentially asking them both to take a pay cut for the final years of their own deals.

French star Antoine Griezmann is also rumoured to be on the list of potential departures with the former Atletico Madrid attacker attracting interest from across Europe’s major leagues.

'Hopefully he will sign for Barca!': Paul Pogba's brother Mathias suggests Manchester United star will consider Nou Camp switch 'once he wins the Europa League'

Paul Pogba's brother is the latest person to make a public intervention about the player's Manchester United future by saying he will consider a move to Barcelona.

Pogba's chequered Old Trafford career has been consistently plagued with talk of his leaving the club.

The France star has in turn shone and disappointed in a United shirt, with fans divided over whether his £89million return in 2016 was money well spent.

But his older brother Mathias Pogba, also a professional footballer at Slovenian club Tabor Sezana, has claimed Paul will consider his future after United's Europa League final against Villarreal on 26 May.

Mathias was also clear on which club will lift the trophy.

'Once he (Paul) wins the Europa League, then we will talk (about his future),' Mathias told Spanish TV show El Chiringuito.

Barcelona have been heavily linked with a move for Pogba over the years. Last year their former head of transfers said the Catalan giants turned down a chance to sign the 28-year-old before Man United did.

Asked to comment on Barcelona's recently revived interest in his brother, Mathias continued: 'I don't know anything but I'm with you, I would sign tomorrow if that was the question.

'Hopefully he will sign for Barca.'

Manchester United must address the question of Pogba's future imminently, as he will move into the final year of his contract at the end of the season.

Pogba's agent Mino Raiola claimed in December that the Frenchman's United career was 'over'

The France World Cup winner has had arguably his most successful campaign since returning to Old Trafford, and has been a key figure in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side securing second place in the Premier League.

His agent Mino Raiola has consistently stirred up talk of Pogba leaving Old Trafford, most famously declaring in December that the Frenchman's time at United was 'over'.

Pogba himself raised eyebrows in October last year when he said it would be a 'dream' to play for Real Madrid.

Barcelona confident of signing Sergio Aguero and Georginio Wijnaldum on free transfers

Barcelona are confident of completing the signings of Sergio Aguero and Georginio Wijnaldum on free transfers within the next week.

Representatives of both players have been at the Nou Camp in the last few days for advanced discussions on proposed contracts.

Finalising a deal for Aguero is expected to develop more rapidly after his final game with Manchester City in the Champions League final against Chelsea this weekend.

Wijnaldum, whom Barca have been chasing for more than a year, said his goodbyes to Liverpool after the final Premier League game of the season last weekend.

Barca have taken a severe financial hit from the coronavirus pandemic, with debts reaching more than £1bn, so have been targeting players at the end of their contracts.

Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay are further signings they want to make when their respective deals at City and Lyon expire on June 30.

Official: Ronald Koeman will continue as the manager of Barcelona

In a press conference held at the Barcelona offices today, Joan Laporta has announced the much-awaited news about Ronald Koeman’s continuity at Barcelona, confirming that the Dutchman will remain at the helm of the club for at least next season as well.

“We have come to the conclusion that Koeman’s continuity is the best option for Barça. I see him motivated, excited and with the right mentality,” Laporta said.

Koeman took over from the departed Quique Setien, who was sacked after Barcelona’s defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League in the 2019/20 season. With the club under a huge transition period, they were certainly tough times. Not to forget the financial condition, and the lack of a competent administration under Josep Bartomeu.

However, under the situation, Koeman delivered and exciting fight for the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey trophy. In addition, the 58-year-old received plaudits for his inclusion of youngsters, and improving the team’s mentality.

With the transfers of Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia, Emerson complete, and Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum underway, next season holds a lot of hope for Barcelona. With the right support, Koeman’s team can go all the way, at least on the domestic front.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta reveals club debt stands at £1.15bn

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed the Spanish club is 1.35bn euros (£1.15bn) in debt, describing the situation as "very worrying".

The club's wage bill currently accounts for 103% of total income.

Laporta blames predecessor Josep Maria Bartomeu for the debt, accusing him of leaving a "terrible inheritance".

Extending Lionel Messi's contract would have made the wage bill accountable for 110% of revenue, which La Liga refused to accept.

Messi announced an emotional exit from the Nou Camp last week and signed for Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract.

"Our salaries represent 103% of the club's total income, that's 20-25% more than our competitors," said Laporta, now in his second term as president after winning March's election.

"The first thing we had to do when we arrived was to ask for a loan of 80m euros because, otherwise, we could not pay the salaries. The previous regime was full of lies.

"Barcelona has a negative net worth of 451m euros - it is a terrible inheritance. What has been happening is very worrying."

Bartomeu defended himself in an open letter released on Saturday, claiming financial measures he would have put in place had he not been forced to resign in October would have allowed Messi to stay at Barcelona.

"As is known, our board of directors planned to call elections on 21 March, within the statutory period at the end of our mandate, which would have allowed us to take on and carry out the settlement of the 2020-21 season accounts," Bartomeu said.

"We would then have taken the decisions necessary to avoid arriving at the current financial situation.

"We would have been the only ones responsible for the closure [due to the pandemic] and its consequences, a decision that the new board has not taken throughout these past months, making clear their inaction."

Laporta described Bartomeu's letter as "an effort to justify management that is unjustifiable" and "an exercise in desperation", adding: "They will not escape their doing."

New signings Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Rey Manaj were only able to be registered by La Liga after defender Gerard Pique agreed to a wage cut to comply with salary cap rules.

Memphis Depay scored Barcelona's winner as they beat Getafe in La Liga.

Sergi Roberto slid home the hosts' opener from Jordi Alba's cross after only 99 seconds.

Sandro levelled for Getafe after a one-two with Carles Alena, both former Barcelona players.

But Depay showed good skill from Frenkie de Jong's pass before rifling into the bottom corner after half an hour for the winner in front of about 26,000 fans.

It was the first La Liga goal scored and assisted by a Dutch player since 2009.

Barcelona - who brought on 17-year-old Gavi for a second-half debut - remain unbeaten on seven points from three games. Getafe have lost all their matches.

There was a return from injury for Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who missed the opening two weeks after knee surgery.

Ronald Koeman's Barca were far from convincing but could have won by more, with Ronald Araujo having a goal ruled out for offside and Depay volleying over.

Barcelona sign Sevilla's Luuk de Jong as Antoine Griezmann rejoins Atletico Madrid

Dutch striker Luuk De Jong and France's Antoine Griezmann both featured at this summer's European Championship
In only one summer transfer window nearly everything has changed at Barcelona.

With over £1bn worth of debt, Barca embarked on a cost-cutting offload that saw captain and legend Lionel Messi move to Paris St-Germain.

Then on deadline day they let £107m signing Antoine Griezmann rejoin rivals Atletico on loan - the 11th player to leave the club this summer.

Coming the other way was former Newcastle striker Luuk de Jong, joining on a season-long loan from Sevilla.

It is the second successive season that Barca have strengthened their rivals. Last season Luis Suarez fired Atletico to the title after joining from Barcelona.

Barcelona's forwards now consist of new signings: Dutch forward Memphis Depay, former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, on-loan Austrian teenager Yusuf Demir, De Jong, plus Denmark striker Martin Braithwaite and the injured 18-year-old Ansu Fati, who has been given Messi's iconic number 10 shirt.

Barca will pay 31-year-old De Jong's salary this season and have an option to make the Netherland international's stay permanent next summer.

Atletico take on Griezmann's salary this term, but there is a compulsory clause to make the transfer permanent.

Griezmann was the third transfer deadline day sale from Barcelona. Right-back Emerson Royal joined Tottenham for £25.8m and teenage midfielder Ilaix Moriba moved to RB Leipzig for £13.7m.

What has happened at Barcelona this summer?
Griezmann's departure came two weeks after Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed the Spanish club is 1.35bn euros (£1.15bn) in debt.

Barcelona's wage bill in mid-August accounted for 103% of their total income.

It was "financial and structural obstacles" relating to La Liga spending rules which saw record six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi leave Barcelona after agreeing a new deal to stay.

Barca's all-time top goalscorer went on to join PSG on a free transfer in early August.

Laporta said keeping Messi could have put the club at risk for 50 years.

Griezmann himself scored just 35 goals in 102 games and managed to win only the Copa del Rey in his two seasons with Barca.

The France striker returns to Atletico where he scored 133 goals in 257 games and won the Europa League, Uefa Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup.

Potential Barcelona team after transfer window closed
Barcelona's possible starting XI, with De Jong replacing Griezmann from their 2-1 win over Getafe on Sunday
The only money Barca spent to bring in a player on a permanent deal during the summer transfer window was to exercise their option to call Emerson back from Betis for a reported 9m euros, only to offload him for a substantial profit.

De Jong, who scored 19 goals in 93 games for Sevilla after moving to La Liga from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2019, is the fourth forward to join Barca this summer after compatriot Depay, Aguero and Demir.

Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba agreeing to salary reductions on Tuesday ensured Aguero could be registered and helped "to extend the club's limit with regards to financial fair play regulations."

Gerard Pique did the same earlier in the summer to allow Depay and former City defender Eric Garcia to be registered,

French football expert Julien Laurens on BBC Radio 5 Live

The most baffling thing for me is that yet again, like they did with Luis Suarez last summer, Barcelona are just strengthening the squad of their opponents for the title.

Griezmann was not happy at Barca, but you are giving one of your direct opponents for the title - and one of the other big clubs in Spain - one of your best players arguably, a fantastic player, and you don't get anything in exchange.

I don't know who makes those decisions, but I find them crazy decisions. Incredible.

3-0 thrashing by Benfica in the Champions League.

Horrible season so far.

Koeman is surely not far from the sack. Barcelona are declining rapidly.

Ronald Koeman said there was "no point" comparing his Barcelona team to those from the past after defeat by Benfica made this the club's worst start to a Champions League campaign.

Barca - also beaten 3-0 by Bayern Munich earlier this month - have lost their opening two matches in the competition for the first time, and sit bottom of Group E.

Benfica got off to an energetic start and opened the scoring inside three minutes, when Darwin Nunez cut inside and finished low into the near corner.

Rafa Silva then clipped in a second after the break and Nunez netted a penalty in a comfortable victory for the home side.

"I'm not going to argue about the level of my team," said Koeman, part of the Barca side that won the European Cup in 1992.
"There's no point in comparing this with Barcelona teams of years gone by. That's as clear as water. I can only give you my opinion of my work at the club - I feel backed by my players and their attitude."

Rumours that Koeman is going to get sacked before Barcelona's next match.

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11833/12423867/ronald-koeman-barcelona-president-joan-laporta-backs-under-fire-coach-after-talks

Barcelona president Joan Laporta gave coach Ronald Koeman his backing on Saturday, saying the Dutchman deserves time to turn the club's fortunes around.

Koeman has come under fire after Barca won just one of their last five games in all competitions, including a 3-0 humbling by Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Names such as Xavi Hernandez, Andrea Pirlo and Roberto Martinez have been linked to the job by local media.

Laporta, however, said he backed Koeman after holding clear-the-air talks with the 58-year-old.

"Koeman will continue as the Barca coach," Laporta told the media ahead of Saturday's LaLiga clash away to Atletico Madrid.

"We understand that he deserves a bit of margin for many reasons: He's a Barca fan and legend for fans all over the world. He'll stay on and deserves a margin of confidence.

"He loves Barca and decided to come here in a really tough time both institutionally and on a sporting front.

"After talking to him, I can see he's got faith in the team... We spoke and it's not true that we've got a tense relationship - it's good and honest. I think we both think the same, to turn things around."

Barca travel to champions Atletico seventh in the table, two points behind Diego Simeone's side having played one game fewer, but five down on table-toppers and arch-rivals Real Madrid.

One reason behind Laporta's stance might be the club's dire financial situation: LaLiga's Financial Fair Play controls mean the club have a budget of just 98m euros this season, and this week Barca confirmed that they posted a loss of 481m for last season.

Not many high profile coaches available now and the Spanish mafia doesn’t have the financial muscle anymore to rob players or managers from other clubs - that’s the only reason RK is still in charge.

They won’t be able to buy out any top EPL manager - none from Bayern, Dortmund, Milan (s), Juve or PSG. Highest profile Managers now available is probably Conte & Zidane (he won’t join Barca, probably eyeing French National job after 2022); but Conte might not join a bankrupt club and his style won’t suit Spanish soccer either. I think, they missed an opportunity to bring one of the best coaching talents but almost unknown- Christophe Galtier, brilliant French manager famous for building squads with young players.

May be Barca can think of bringing back Rijkaard from retirement - he is still young enough (59) for 6-7 years; otherwise RK will survive the season I guess.

Barca’s crisis started with violating gentleman's agreement and poach Coutinho from Liverpool, something still they are trying to swallow and I am loving it - these two Spanish mafias are bigger than Spanish soccer and they get things done their way in Spain - that’s one reason among major soccer nations, Spain is the least successful country despite arguably producing more talents than Germany, France, Italy & definitely England.

Barcelona's accounts presented a loss of €481m (£409m) for the end of the 2020-21 financial year - but how has it come to this?

In August, Barcelona president Joan Laporta opened up on the "very worrying" financial situation when revealing the club are €1.35bn (£1.15bn) in debt.

A summary of their accounts at the closure of the 2020-21 season shows the club recorded a 26 per cent, €224m (£191m), drop in revenue from the previous year, citing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic as a primary reason.

Barcelona said the estimated impact of Covid-19 is €181m (£154m), mainly due to the inability to open both the stadium and other club facilities.

Operating expenses increased by 19 per cent to €1.136bn (£967m), an all-time record figure at the club, while transfer income was €56m (£48m), a decrease of €92m (£78m).

Barcelona's teenage midfielder Pedri has agreed a new contract until 2026 including a release clause of €1bn, the La Liga club have announced.

Aguero makes Barcelona debut as Coutinho ends 11-month goal drought

Sergio Aguero made his long-awaited Barcelona debut as Philippe Coutinho's first goal in almost a year helped secure victory against Valencia.

Aguero joined Barcelona in the summer after leaving Manchester City but had been sidelined by injury.

He came on with three minutes to go, shortly after Coutinho had made sure of Barcelona's win.

The former Liverpool forward struck from close range to add to goals from Ansu Fati and Memphis Depay.

Jose Gaya had given the visitors an early lead but Fati marked his first start in almost a year with a goal soon after, firing home from the edge of the box.

Fati was then fouled inside the box and Depay stepped up to convert the penalty.

As Valencia pushed for an equaliser Coutinho scored for the first time since a 4-0 win against Osasuna in November 2020 to secure the win.

Barcelona are on 15 points, five behind leaders Real Sociedad.

Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid: David Alaba and Lucas Vazquez net as visitors seal victory in El Clasico

Goals in each half from David Alaba and Lucas Vazquez saw Real Madrid win 2-1 at Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday, leading Barca fans to confront Ronald Koeman as he left the Nou Camp in his car after the game.

Alaba - making his Clasico debut - opened the scoring after 32 minutes with a thumping long-range strike, before Vazquez doubled the visitors' lead in second-half stoppage time.

Despite Sergio Aguero coming off the bench to score a late consolation for Barcelona on his Clasico debut too, Madrid hung on to hand Carlo Ancelotti his first managerial win at the Nou Camp.

As a result, Real went second in the La Liga standings on goal difference from Sevilla and moved one point behind league leaders Real Sociedad after their 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, Barca stay eighth.

Following the game, footage posted on social media appeared to show Koeman's car being surrounded by fans as he drove away from the Nou Camp.

A crowd of supporters could be seen hitting Koeman's vehicle and angrily reacting to their latest loss as the 58-year-old tried to drive away from the stadium.

In response, Barcelona posted a statement on their official Twitter account which read: "Barcelona publicly condemn the violent and disdainful acts that our manager experienced when leaving the Nou Camp.

"The club will take security and disciplinary measures so that such unfortunate events do not happen again."

Things turning very toxic at Nou Camp. End is surely near for Koeman.

Ronald Koeman says he wants to "enjoy the time I have left" as Barcelona manager as he faces mounting pressure following the defeat by Real Madrid in El Clasico.

Barca were beaten 2-1 at home by their biggest rivals on Sunday, which leaves them ninth in La Liga.

They travel to in-form Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday and Koeman says his side "cannot afford back-to-back losses".

"I'm a grown up and I know how these things work," Koeman said on Tuesday.

"I want to enjoy the time that I have left, if it is eight years, six months, one year, or some weeks. I think it's important that we win this game in Madrid, we cannot afford back-to-back losses."

Following the defeat on Sunday, Koeman's car was surrounded by some Barcelona supporters, who he has since dismissed as "uneducated people".

He added: "It is a social problem. Uneducated people that don't understand rules and values.

"Inside the stadium the environment was completely different and that is what I keep in mind, that festive vibe, not with those kinds of people."

Rayo are seventh in La Liga, one point ahead of Barca, having been inspired this season by the arrival of veteran Colombia striker Radamel Falcao.

They have won four of their last six games and will be roared on by an expectant home crowd, while Barca may be without teenage forward Ansu Fati because of pain in the knee he had surgery on.

"They are a really tough team to beat and they are even better this season," said Koeman. "We'll have to be in our best shape to beat them in their home.

"He [Fati] doesn't feel right, we will decide on Wednesday morning if he makes the trip."

Barcelona sack Ronald Koeman after Rayo Vallecano loss

Ronald Koeman has been sacked as head coach of Barcelona after 14 months in charge at the Nou Camp.

Barca have picked up just 15 points from 10 games in La Liga and have already lost twice in the group stage of this season's Champions League.

They are ninth in the table, six points adrift of the joint leaders after losing at Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday.

The loss was Barca's third in their last four games and it followed defeat in Sunday's Clasico to Real Madrid.

In a statement, the Spanish club said: "The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him [Koeman] of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano.

"Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday."

The former Netherlands, Everton and Southampton boss, 58, could only guide the five-time European champions to third place in the league last season.

The Dutchman has not been helped by the club's significant financial problems, which resulted in Lionel Messi's exit and subsequent move to Paris St-Germain in August.

Barcelona were unable to spend any money on new signings in the summer, with Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia arriving as free transfers and striker Luuk de Jong joining on loan from Sevilla.

Speaking after Wednesday's defeat, Koeman said: "It [Barcelona's league position] says we're not well.

"The team has lost balance in the squad, lost very effective players, which shows. In recent years other clubs have strengthened every season and we haven't, which also shows."

Club legend Xavi, the former Barca midfielder who is now manager of Qatari side Al Sadd, is one of the favourites to replace Koeman.

It is the first time since September 1987 that Barca have lost three away games in a row without scoring - a run that saw English manager Terry Venables sacked.

Koeman won the Copa del Rey at the end of his first season but Barca finished behind Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in La Liga with their lowest points tally since 2008.

The former Netherlands centre-back played for the Spanish club between 1989 and 1995, helping them to four league titles and scoring the winning goal in the 1992 European Cup final.

He was brought back to the club in August 2020 as head coach by former president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

New chief Laporta, however, frequently made it clear the Dutchman was not his appointment.

The duo had an uneasy relationship, and Koeman released a statement in September asking to be given time to rebuild after losing Messi and fellow forward Antoine Griezmann in the summer.

Following the defeat to Madrid on Sunday, Koeman's car was surrounded by some Barcelona supporters, whom he later dismissed as "uneducated people".

Speaking before the trip to Rayo Vallecano, he said: "It is a social problem. Uneducated people that don't understand rules and values."

Writing has been on the wall for a while. Not sure why they think Xavi is the man to rescue them from this dire slump amid such financial problems.

Thank god, Koeman's tenure was a nightmare.

Hopefully Xavi takes over and gets Barca back to its true philosophy and playing style. Watching Barca play in the recent years was very odd as it looked like a different team in Barca colours.

Sure there isn't the stars of the yesteryear, but there are some very good youngsters like Fati, Pedri, Gavi, Demir, Puig De Jong and we can hopefully build a good team centred around these players under Xavi.

Xavi Hernandez, a club legend, has expressed in public that he would one day like to manage Barcelona and that he's willing and ready to come home as soon as he gets the call.

"He'd be happy to come back and take the job, but as of yet, nothing has been said regarding any contact.

"If Barcelona want to compete with the elite, then they perhaps do need to bring somebody else in. In 10 games against some of the biggest clubs around - Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich for example in the Champions League - they only won one with Koeman in charge.

"There's a big gap behind some of those leading clubs that needs to be closed. The games have shown that Koeman maybe isn't the right man for the job. It might just be that he's the right man but just not at the right time."

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says he is in contact with Xavi but would not comment on whether he will replace Ronald Koeman as manager.

Koeman was sacked after defeat to Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday and Laporta has admitted he should have gone sooner.

Former Barca midfielder Xavi, 41, is in charge of Qatari club Al Sadd, but is favourite to replace Koeman.

"I have always said one day [Xavi] will be Barca's head coach but I don't know when," said Laporta.

He added: "We have great references about Xavi at Al Sadd. All our reports about Xavi are positive. We can talk a lot about Xavi, but I cannot give you more details. He is in all the papers, but we also have other options."

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Laporta was asked whether he waited too long to make a decision on Dutchman Koeman's future.

"Probably, yes," he said. "Looking back it is easy to analyse, we felt Koeman deserved confidence to recover some injured players and it was a way to motivate the manager.

"I looked for some positives. Probably we had to make an earlier decision, I assume the responsibilities of this decision."
