@AssasinatedDevil

When is the PS5 out ? I wouldn't mind if it's a few years from now because during that time maybe I'd have clocked some hours on my PS4, I always end up buying the latest console when am yet to get the most out of the previous one. This time will hold off even if PS5 comes out next year.

Also, am going to get Fifa 18; I read that there's an update which includes the current World Cup as a mode

Bro nothing has been announced for it yet. The earliest it could be out is in 2019 but I would wager that they would hold it till 2020 as it's only been 2 years since the PS4 pro came out. Also, the ps5 would need to be a huge step up from the current consoles and if you look at the current prices of top of the line CPUs and GPUs then they aren't cheap enough to be used in consoles on a massive scale. 2020 would mean all these equipments and parts will get cheaper overtime, which means the price of the ps5 would be cheaper as well. That being said, they could still release it next year but I fail to understand how they would provide a substantial leap over the PS4 pro if they release it so soon.

Yaar only get FIFA 18 if its really cheap. FIFA 19 is just around the corner so if I were you I would wait for the latest and greatest version of the game. Not sure if FIFA 19 will have a world cup inspired theme to it though

I prefer PUBG over fortnite. I dislike the buidling mechanics in fortnite which for me are plain annoying. Also, im not much fan of cartoony styled graphics.

I like PUBG as well but I genuinely prefer fortnite over PUBG at the moment. PUBG is just too damn laggy on Xbox and don't even get me started on phones. The art style of fortnite is definitely childish but it doesn't throw me off too much. Fortnite also gets much more updates than PUBG and also has the advantage of being free on all platforms

For anyone who hasn't checked out Anthem, this is a recent trailer. Pretty keen for this game.

I usually wait a year so they can work out potential bugs that pop up. Same with smartphones.

Good point, I generally have the same approach when buying smartphones and tend to get the slim version of the consoles when they do release (by then the bugs would have been sorted to hopefully).

True, I forgot about that. PS4 pro has only been out recently and the VR is relatively a new tech as well so for them to justify a new console there would need to be some major upgrades but like you say cost is also an issue so it could a while before we get the next big release from sony.

I've not bought any of the previous versions on PS4, thought I like the World Cup as a mode and on the PS Store there's a deal where you can download the game for £16 and on Amazon it's being sold for £20. But it could be worth holding out for 19 because they finally have the license for the Champions League, I will probably get 18 and try to find a good deal

This is without a doubt my most hyped up game for 2018. Absolutely cannot wait to play Read Dead 2 as I was a huge fan of the first game. Hopefully the story is even better this time around :)

That's true but in this day and age the latest and greatest technology can become obsolete in a matter of months. I'd love to save some money by waiting for prices to go down and the next iteration of gaming hardware to come out but my early adopter's mentality doesn't allow me to do that :(

Death Stranding from the makers of Metal Gear Solid. Looks...strange but I'm intrigued nonetheless.

I had a PS3 which stopped working(yellow light).Planning to buy an Xbox now.

The only games I’ve played since my Playstation broke down were GTA V,COD and Fifa 18.

IMO, the best game on PS is Horizon: Zero Dawn...until The Last Of Us 2 is released.

The finale was very weak it has to be said

I wouldn't say it was weak but I did think it was very sudden. I expected the game to go on after that but they were definitely setting up a bombastic sequel with that ending. A lot of mind-boggling stuff in the easter eggs they put towards the end of the game. Did you also get the secret ending which involved you going to a certain area in the game? Curious to know why you thought the finale was weak.

Not particularly a gamer myself, but I would suggest you go for the PS4 or wait for the PS5. Sony is currently wiping the floor with Microsoft with all the quality exclusives it has released in the past 5 years. Best to bank on the current trend.

2 of the greatest games released in the last 5 years. I'd still say The Last of Us is better than Uncharted 4 but Uncharted has it's own type of charm. You're lcuky you get to play them back to back.

Yea, Last Of Us 2 is coming soon. I'm waiting for Red Dead Redemption 2, that's one game I'll definitely buy when it comes out in October. It's a shame they haven't released a remastered version of the original Red Dead Redemption for the PS4.

What games y'all playing?

Currently playing a bunch of old games as it's the time of the year where not many games come out. I got Fallout 4 with xbox game pass so started playing it again. I also play Forza Horizon 3 and titanfall 2 for about 30 minutes a day. Ashes Cricket is something I play for hours on end as well. :sm

5 references to the next "Playstation 5" and "Xbox Two" next-gen consoles

While we’re constantly speculating on what the future of video games has in store, E3 2018 marked the beginning of folks in the industry directly referencing the next generation of consoles. Not mid-generation improvements like the Pro and the X, but, for lack of official names, the PlayStation 5 and the “Xbox Two,” which seems to be codenamed Scarlet. More on that later.

From rumors to speculation to concrete details, here are are 5 references to the next generation of consoles that came out of E3 2018.

STARFIELD and THE ELDER SCROLLS 6

Next-gen talk kicked into gear during the final moments of Bethesda’s E3 2018 conference. After showing off extended demos Rage 2 and Fallout 76, both of which should be in our hands in less than a year, Todd Howard capped off the show with two brief, but important announcements. Starfield, the long-rumored “third open-world pillar” for Bethesda, and The Elder Scrolls 6.

When describing Starfield, the studio’s “first wholly original franchise in 25 years,” Howard said that the game would be next-gen. Howard then went on to describe The Elder Scrolls 6 as "the game after" their Starfield. Since Starfield will be a "next-gen" game, it would seem to be safe speculation that this means Elder Scrolls 6 will be as well.

XBOX TWO/PROJECT SCARLET

So Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 are next-gen games, but what about the consoles we’ll be playing them on? Well, a report recently came out that the next Xbox is currently codenamed “Scarlet.” If you recall, the Xbox One X was known as Scorpio, the Xbox One was Durango, and the 360 was Xenon. The report also pointed towards a 2020 release date, but also that the project encompasses “multiple pieces of hardware.”

What this means for the Xbox One X still remains to be seen. Will games like Starfield be playable in any form on the X, or will the next-generation truly abandon everything before it?

CYBERPUNK 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was the talk of E3, from its awesome re-reveal on Microsoft’s stage, to its behind-closed-doors demo that helped secure its win as our Game of Show. But one question we’ve been asking ourselves is just where we’ll be playing it when it comes out.

While CD Projekt stated that they’re “targeting” current-gen consoles, the 45 minute demo we saw at E3 definitely felt like something truly next-gen. This wouldn’t be the first time something like this happened -- Watch Dogs was revealed at E3 2012 long before the PS4 and Xbox One had been revealed, eventually having the best version of the game released on those two. Could Cyberpunk be a cross-gen game?

HALO INFINITE

Speaking of cross-gen speculation, let’s talk about Halo. One of the most exciting reveals of E3 was our first look at Halo Infinite, and in turn, developer 343’s brand new Slipspace Engine. An official 343 blog post states that the Slipspace Engine is “taking advantage of the full power of the Xbox One family.” But will Project Scarlet be a member of that family?

Core Halo games traditionally release every three years, most recently with Halo 5: Guardians coming out back in 2015. Clearly Halo Infinite’s development alongside this new engine means we won’t be seeing the game in 2018, so at that point, you have to ask yourself if this is going to be a game that helps usher in the next generation of Microsoft consoles.

BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL 2

Beyond Good and Evil 2 was the big surprise last year at E3 2017, and it showed up again this year with a fantastic trailer. But those of us hoping for a concrete release date were left disappointed, as it seems like the ambitious game is quite a ways off.

Michel Ancel said that they’re aiming to have a playable beta ready at the end of 2019. Given that Ubisoft's betas tend to take place months in advance of release, that almost certainly places a release date, at the very earliest, at some point in 2020. If we line that up with the Project Scarlet reports, it’s a safe bet that Jade and company will be making their return on the next generation of hardware.

For those that are curious about the next geneation of consoles, this provides some interesting insight into the whole matter

Fortnite is the biggest game on the planet right now because it’s a living, breathing world

When Epic Games revealed the big surprise of Fortnite’s fourth season earlier this week, fans could both see it coming and retain that giddy kid-on-Christmas-morning feeling. The developer planned the reveal for months: a meteor in the sky hovered over the game’s map since January, and on Tuesday it crashed into the world of Fortnite to create a massive crater with gravity-defying extraterrestrial power-ups scattered about. In addition to the meteor crash, Epic transformed its map in subtle but powerful ways, adding new structures, secret underground lairs, and other goodies in service to its new superhero theme.

Most players expected something to this effect, and yet the Fortnite community has been effusive in its praise for how the build up and eventual execution was pulled off. It was a shared gaming experience like no other. And that’s what makes season four of Fortnite feel like a crucial turning point for the battle royale game, which remains fundamentally about sending 100 human players to a deserted island to loot, build, and shoot their way to victory. The experience still revolves around that same satisfying survival cycle. But the holistic Fortnite experience is fast resembling something closer to a massively multiplayer online game, with a constantly updated narrative, a persistent world that changes all at once for every player, and a fan base with the means to customize and outfit an avatar in increasingly sophisticated ways.

Starting with season three and culminating with last Tuesday’s reveal, Epic began crafting a narrative for Fortnite that felt giant and ambitious in ways few other online games have ever pulled off. Players theorized about an incoming alien invasion, and whether Epic was planning on destroying the controversial in-game metropolis Tilted Towers as a way to tell a story and adjust the game’s competitive landscape at the same time. While it was Dusty Depot, and not Tilted Towers, that suffered deep impact, the effect remains the same. Epic crafted a narrative for an online multiplayer game exclusively out of contextual clues, in-game hints, and other forms of environmental storytelling. The end result is a game that feels richer, deeper, and more purposeful than its battle royale trappings would have you believe.

Epic didn’t stop with the comet landing. The new superhero theme is also an ingenious way to build another layer onto the ongoing story and give players even more ways to express themselves. There are new costumes to unlock and goofy emotes, one even culled from a popular internet meme. But this season, Epic included two superhero skins that can only be upgraded by playing the game, performing challenges, and leveling up using in-game experience points. You can’t buy your way to these upgrades; you have to earn them, just like in any hardcore role-playing game. The substantial upgrade paths, unlockable rewards, and the persistent but ever-changing game map make Fortnite a much meatier experience than Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, which has static, unchanging environments and otherwise boring customization options.

In this way, Fortnite feels like a more realized version of Bungie’s Destiny, a game that ambitiously tried and never quite succeeded at blending the best of shooter and MMO game design. Like Destiny, Fortnite lets players engage in a shared world, customize characters, and, now, upgrade those customization options through in-game activities. But unlike Bungie, Epic puts its world-building and other update efforts toward the competitive multiplayer battle royale mode, without worrying too much about a traditional story or plot. Because Fortnite is free-to-play, players don’t expect anything outside the core experience, and they pay money only for cosmetic vanity items and nothing else.

Epic’s narrative and RPG-like focus isn’t a thematic side project or something the developer is doing just for fun. Focusing on world-building and giving players a communal story to rally around is a business imperative for a free-to-play game like Fortnite. The game can only stay relevant so long as players feel invested in what they’re doing. That doesn’t just mean playing the competitive multiplayer every day to unlock challenges or try and win a match. Being invested in Fortnite also means caring more deeply about what story Epic is trying to tell, where the game is headed, and how that interplay between narrative and gameplay will help the title evolve over time, like just the best of MMOs.

Also consider the Battle Pass, which urges players to log in every day and complete challenges to unlock better rewards that can only be earned and not bought. Every single core pillar of Fortnite, from its growing narrative to its in-game store to its seasonal competitive multiplayer approach, feeds into a cycle that helps the game stay relevant, popular, and lucrative. The players who are more invested then become more likely to spend real money.

So when people say the future of online gaming looks like Fortnite, they’re not just talking about the battle royale genre, which won’t feel so shiny and new a year from now. They’re talking about the blending of every good idea from the last decade of online gaming, from both the East and West. Like most MMOs, Fortnite is free-to-play, constantly updated, and massive multiplayer. And like the most successful games of the last few years regardless of genre, it’s free-to-play and cross-platform, makes money using vanity cosmetics, focuses on letting players tell their own stories, and incorporates community feedback on a regular basis.

All of these aspects will inform the way games are developed, marketed, and make money in the future. And Fortnite is leading the pack by illustrating just how to make this combination of genre elements, business model innovations, and raw fun factor have influential, industry-changing staying power.

Curious to know how many posters here play fortnite

Any PPers have the nintendo switch? What games do you guys play on it?

I have it, for me, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Mario Kart are must buys. Already spent way too many hours on them, more than I'm willing to admit on here.

I've only really played my PS4 for sports games (NBA 2k18, Fifa 18 and Don Bradman Cricket) and it's quite disappointing to know that none of the other games I've seen have really appealed to me. Looking forward to Spiderman and might pick up God Of War once I'm done with Xenoblade. If you want a list of Switch games to get I'd suggest:

Mario Odyssey, Breath Of The Wild, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Hollow Knight, Kirby Star Allies, Octopath Traveller, Pokken Tournament, Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Rabbids (like XCOM 2) and Smash Ultimate when it comes out.

Also I don't rate Fortnite and can't wait for it to die, it's rubbish and lacks anysort of skill to play, because epic games seem to keep nerfing anything that would need skill to use effectively (such as building). I find it extremely hard not to roll my eyes and sigh when I hear people say they play Fortnite, especially since a majority of the time it's just bandwagoners. Sorry for the rant. :))

I’m not a hater but man I feel bad for Xbox fans this generation. They’re so obviously in denial :)))

Also, I’ll start posting in this thread regularly when I get back to Canada. I consider myself a really hardcore gamer

Currently playing silent hill 2 for the first time. Will probably go down as one of my favourite games of all time

Is the Nintendo Switch also like a PSP except you can continue playing it on a big screen ? Do you mostly play on the telly or handheld

Nintendo have always been my favourite and while there have been some amazing releases nothing has topped the N64, then again it's the greatest console ever and hard to top.

Miss playing gems like Mario Kart, Star Fox, GoldenEye, Body Harvest, WM 2000 and Perfect Dark

I have a ps4 but envy those who can play Forza, Xbox folk generally get the best racing games

I have Mario kart as well but didn't really bother getting Xenoblade as it didn't really grab me.

Spider-Man is going to be one of the biggest games of the year imo and should sell incredibly. Absolutely cannot wait for that game. Sad to hear that you couldnt get into many ps4 games since imo they easily have the best exclusives this generation. Nintendo has great exclusives as well but Sony's lineup is more versatile.

Out of the games you just listed, I already have Mario Odyssey, Breath Of The Wild, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Hollow Knight. Mario tennis aces looks cool as well and I really enjoyed playing the beta but I'll wait for it to go on sale.

As for fortnite, I used to be like you and didn't rate it very highly. But in the past couple months, I've really started enjoying it based on how quick and easy it is to get into a game and the sheer power of the building system in the game. The game is like visual eye candy on the Xbox One X as well, so that's also one of the reasons I come back to it again and again. It's not the biggest game in the world for no reason. Epic has really done an amazing job when it comes to updating the game and implement a form of storytelling without any real dialogues or cutscenes.

The switch is a hybrid console which means you can play it on the go and use it as a handheld or connect it to the tv and play it that way.

The N64 from what I know was indeed an amazing console and Nintendo might re-release some of the older N64 games on the switch later this year when their paid online service starts.

If you miss playing Mario kart then the switch already has one and it's easily the best Mario kart to date.

Xbox really did mess up big time in 2013 at the start of the generation but they have done well to fix that to an extent and make the best of a bad situation. I am lucky enough to own all 3 consoles but the Xbox is definitely my favourite. With features like backwards compatibility and services like game pass, Xbox is really destroying PlayStation in many departments and these such services will transfer over to the next Xbox, which means all the games you play today will most likely be playable on the next gen console. Add to the fact that they are all on board with the whole idea of cross play and it shows that they are doing what gamers want. The One X is also easily the most powerful console on the market at the moment, so the graphics on that console are unmatched. The PS4 pro was a massive disappointment when it comes to raw power.

Also glad to know that you're a hardcore gamer like myself and intend on posting here more often.

I have a ps4 but envy those who can play Forza, Xbox folk generally get the best racing games

The Forza Motorsport series and Forza horizon series are some of the best games out there imo. I wasn't that much into cars before playing them but the level of love and dedication that the developers put into making these games is on a whole other level. It doesn't hurt that they are technological marvels either. Horizon 3 and Motorsport 7 pm The One X are some of the best looking games ever made.

CYBERPUNK CREATOR ON 2077: 'PERFECTION TAKES TIME'

To make Cyberpunk 2077 the best it can be, "We need space, we need time, and we need the privacy to mull it over," says Cyberpunk 2020 creator Mike Pondsmith of the games long development timeline. In an interview with IGN, the author of the cult-classic tabletop RPG said that his biggest concern is whether or not fans can be patient enough to allow CDPR to build the game they want to build. "We have an awful lot of stuff that we want to do, and it's going to take time to do it. And I'm hoping the fans are going to give us the time to do it."

He confided that "The game we have right now is pretty damn close to what I would have built if I built it alone myself in a broom closet. I look at things in there and I just go, ‘Oh my God, that's perfect. That's just downright perfect.'" He continued, "But to get that kind of perfection does take time. It takes iteration."

He went on to explain that he felt it was "very smart not to show the whole world gameplay." As we've mentioned before on IGN, pre-alpha gameplay demos are done more to showcase ideas, themes, and mechanics of upcoming games, as opposed to a segment of the final product. Running demos and receiving feedback allows developers to find the best method of implementing the mechanic or idea that they want to see in the final game.

Pondsmith continued, "If we're going to do stuff that has never been done before - or has never been done the way we're doing it - we need space, we need time, and we need the privacy to mull it over. If we have too many cooks in the kitchen we're not going to get a good dinner out of it."

GTA V is the most profitable entertainment product of all time

The above is probably the least surprising headline you'll read on GamesIndustry.biz all year.

The success of Grand Theft Auto V is well documented, but a fresh report from MarketWatch offers more insight into the record-breaking impact of the hugely popular game.

The site reports that with 90 million sales worldwide, and $6 billion in revenue, GTA V is the "most financially successful media title of all time". While the report primarily makes comparisons with film, this almost certainly encompasses books, music and other entertainment products as well.

The $6 billion revenues, for example, is far past the $4 billion achieved by best-selling films such as Star Wars and Gone With The Wind (adjusted for inflation, and adding DVD sales to the $3 billion box office receipts).

Even the highest grossing film of all time - James Cameron's Avatar, which made $2.8 billion - fails to match even half the money taken by Grand Theft Auto.

It's not completely clear whether the $6 billion is based purely on sales, or if it includes the "recurrent consumer spending" that Take-Two is still enjoying from the online multiplayer.

Grand Theft Auto is the clear winner within the games space of course. The closest competitors include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops, which achieved 26.5 million and 24.2 million sales respectively - far short of GTA V's total unit count.

In fact, you would have to combine the sales of GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV to match GTA V's figures.

Of course, there are a few extenuating circumstances. The regularly updated and expanded online multiplayer goes far beyond that of GTA V's predecessors or even other AAA games (most of which stop releasing post-launch content within a year of release).

It's also worth remembering that the 90 million sales figures includes two generations of sales, thanks to the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions, with many consumers likely to have picked up a second copy when they upgraded to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

Grand Theft Auto V was the sixth biggest selling game of 2018 in the US, the third biggest game in the UK and Europe, and still capable of topping the charts four years after release.

Cowen analyst Doug Creutz stressed that Grand Theft Auto V remains a "wild outlier", with few other console titles likely to ever achieve such success.

Even the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 or a far-flung Grand Theft Auto VI is unlikely to match these sales.

"That's not to say Rockstar won't have other big hits - it may - but another GTA V isn't likely," said Creutz. "Michael Jackson had a lot of hit albums but he only had one Thriller."

For those that didn't read all of it, I'll summarise it for you guys. GTA V (a videogame) is the single-most profitable entertainment product of all time.

Single.Most.Profitable.Entertianment.Product.Of.All.Time

It has made more money than any book, music record, film, tv show or any other entertainment product ever made.

Let that sink in for a little bit.

For comparison's sake, Avatar, which is the highest grossing film of all time, has just made 2.8 billion dollars, not even half of what GTA V has made.

Insanity.

Yeah I saw this a while back and it’s not really a surprise.

Becuase from what I remember GTA5 made a billion dollars in its first day. On top of that GTA online alone made another billion dollars from all its micro transactions.

It’s no surprise that a game turned out to be the most profitable entertainment product becuase games are generally more expensive than music and films to consume. The average game is priced at $60 and games these days have many other ways to get even more money from the consumer like additional downloads, micro transaction and special editions.

Yeah. It came out on my birthday and I pre ordered the steel book edition. Was probably my most hyped game of all time. Now I realize how mediocre it really was though.

Yes cross play is a good initiative and Sony has made some decisions I haven’t liked but at the end of the day, with how dominant they are in the current console market, they don’t really need to do any of that.

When it comes down to it, the ONLY thing I care about is quality of games. Xbox is absolutely shameful if you compare the amount of quality games with those on the PS4. I have both consoles so I have no reason to blindly defend Sony. Yes the Xbox One X is more powerful than the ps4 but who cares? Microsoft is an awful company to work with which is why bungee also left. Forcing out Halo and Forza games year after year shows their mindset when it comes to games. Bungee didn’t want to make a Halo game after 3 (which is when the series should’ve ended but unfortunately Microsoft don’t have the guts to try something new) but they were forced to keep making more.

Who cares about raw power when the PS4 has games like Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War which absolutely destroy the graphical bar and blow away anything Microsoft has ever made. Good graphics aren’t just about raw graphical power but about art style and attention to detail which Sony exclusive studios are masters of. A little bit of graphical improvement on non exclusives does not give me any reason to turn on my Xbox. But at the end of the day, it isn’t even about graphics. Sony exclusives play like an absolute dream and are so perfectly written.

I still go back and play ps1 and ps2 games because like I said before, quality of games is the only thing I care about. If I cared about forza or halo (which I don’t know why anyone would care about anymore), only then would I buy an Xbox but I care about games in general. The key thing here is that Sony encourages creative freedom within their studios and their quality control is unmatched. That’s all I will ever care about.

Recently at e3, Xbox announced it was buying more studios to create exclusives. I feel like it’s too late. Sony at e3 just showed us exclusives that look better than real life and Xbox is saying it just bought studios. Even then, I expect most of those exclusives to be no match to Sony’s.

Also, exclusives aren’t the only reason. When it comes to a lot of multiplayer games, the largest player base is often on the PS4. For example, rainbow six siege is the only online multiplayer game I play nowadays (used to be a hardcore multiplayer gamer a few years ago but not anymore) and more than half the player base of said game is on the PS4. (That includes Xbox and PC!) On higher ranks it is almost impossible for me to find games on the Xbox and when I do, most people don’t have mics.

All in all, I can’t emphasize enough that to me gaming is all about the games. I often sound like a snob when it comes to movies as well and it’s no different when it comes to games. I don’t consider obsessing over fortnite, forza, halo etc real gaming. Gaming for me is an art and one of the best forms of it. Gaming is about exploring, playing and thinking about different types of games that are high quality and stand for something And Play Station for me is the place to experience all that.

Also if this post was too long then just read the following : God of War, Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Nier Automata, Last of Us, Persona 5, the Yakuza games and many more with many more still to come. Oh and did I mention God of War?

(Also nice to see some fellow gamers on pp)

I don’t mean to offend any Xbox fans. Just stating what I believe. I will admit that Sony fans can be really harsh sometimes and need to stop commenting on every single Xbox page out there (though I’ll admit some of their jibes at Xbox and looking at comments from offended Xbox gamers can be hilarious sometimes).

If you miss playing Mario kart then the switch already has one and it's easily the best Mario kart to date.

It was buddy from its pioneering releases, innovative controller and game changing graphics it was just incredible and very often ranked as the greatest ever, definitely for me. If that is true about those classic releases it makes my decision easier to try and find a good deal during black Friday !

aliasad1998 Since you don't rate Forza which racing games are there on PS4 which are better and good to buy ? I already have Dirt Rally and didn't get Gran Turismo because of all the bad reviews

I want to buy God of War but need to buy all the previous releases to get into the overall narrative and characters, I did play the one on PSP and it was brilliant but never finished it so typical of me

I rate forza. I don’t rate halo anymore. It is the best racing game on the market. But I personally don’t play racing games

Driveclub is the only legitimate PS4 racing game I own. It's definitely not on Forza's level though.

Yep this news is a couple months old. In hindsight it's not that surprising that it's the biggest entertinment property of all time since it was already the biggest game of all time in terms of revenue but it still boggles my mind that a medium such as gaming, which is much younger than other forms of entertainment such as movies, books and music etc. has yielded a property that beats everything else in history. That's even more interesting when you take into account that video games aren't taken very seriously in the traditional press and to this day, many people still believe that it's a hobby that only kids should pursue and that adults are too old for it.

It was my most hyped up game of all time as well but I don't for a second believe that it is mediocre. It was transformational for open world games in many ways and Los Santos is still one of my favorite video game settings to explore to this day.

Buying a switch is definitely a worthy investment and I can guarantee that you won't regret it. They have hinted at NES classics and SNES classics several times in the past so keep your fingers crossed i reckon!

nah man don't bother worrying about the old games. You don't need any prior knowledge of the old games to enjoy this game. It's almost like a reboot. Kratos is a very different character compared to before and the Norse setting is nothhing like the older settings. Dive right in I'd say.

Is Nier Automata good?

I’ve been thinking about getting it for a long time. They say you have to play the game multiple times to get the whole story, but for some reason I get the feeling that I won’t really enjoy the story.

Yeah but that’s slowly changing because people are slowly starting to notice the money in games.

Plus a lot of big name people from film and tv are getting involved in video games now. For example people like Guillermo Del Toro and Norman Reedus are a big part of Death Stranding and one of the directors of West World is also co-directing The Last Of Us part 2.

It's a much more powerful PSP that can be used as home console or portable. Mario Kart is great on the switch, a new Star Fox is coming from what I've heard, however there isn't many (or any) games that replicate the magic of Perfect Dark or Body Harvest unfortunately. I guess Doom is a good alternative to Body Harvest, while the WWE 2k18 port on the Switch is a joke, despite the NBA 2k18 port being very good.

Though you can hardmod the Switch to a point where you can run emulators of a gamecube, N64, SNES etc on there.

I think it's just due to PS4 exclusives being gritty and deep story games which I'm not really a fan of, games such as Uncharted or the Last Of Us are bit over the top in every sense of the word. (A hot take I know, just not a fan of the boring gameplay these games have, no matter how good the story is). Obviously due to that, I don't really feel like I can agree with you that it has the best exclusives this generation (only if the switch is included as this generation because it released four years later I believe).

Only issue with Xenoblade is that it is very slow for the first couple of chapters but afterwards the game becomes pretty good as far as JRPG's go. Maybe that is why it didn't really grab you.

Graphics don't really mean anything to me, nor does an easy learning curve (in fact I prefer games that have depth and difficulty unlike Fortnite, which even my six year old cousin seems to be prolific at playing). I wouldn't say that it's the biggest game in the world either but that's a matter of opinion, it just feels like one of those games every will forget about playing, such as GTA V online or Black Ops 3 after an intial craze. Personally If I wanted to play a Battle Royale game I'd just go and play H1Z1, which is what this game blatanly rips off. (It's crazy to think that the PUBG developers tried to sue Epic Games, when Epic Games licenses the engine for PUBG. Have no idea what wsa going on there.)

I'm still planning to buy games for my PS4 eventually, games such as Nier Automata, God Of War, Spiderman, Dragon Ball FighterZ and BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle are at the top of my list.

Great post. I agree that sony is clearly the dominant player in the market at the moment and they can sort of get away with not having cross play since there player base is more than the xbox and switch combined at the moment. Nevertheless, you have to admi that it's a very anti-consumer move and it only limits us from playing with people on other platforms. Sony is being cocky to an extent because of this lead but this hubris could backfire on them next-gen.

I don't agree with you about Microsoft being an awful company to work with. This might've been the case a couple years ago around the end of the 360 era and the beginning of the xbone era, but Microsoft today is a company that has the best interests of gamers as well as developers in mind. The fact that they are willing to utilize features such as backwards compatibility is amazing for consumers and also drives the sales of older,last-gen games. Xbox game pass is also indeed an amazing service as it gives you access to 100s of games for a ridiculously low price. Gone are the days where I start my console and am not spoilt by choice. I have access to 100s of games that, although alot of them are mediocre, some of them really are gems. Todd Howard from Bethesda also recently said that Playstation isn't being cooperative with them, which is the reason fallout 76 won't have cross-play. It would've been great if Playstation would've been less adamant on opposing cross-play.

I agree that good graphics aren't just about raw power. Zelda is one of the most visually stunning game that I have played this generation, and it ran on a machine that uses a processor designed for tablets and has just 4 gigs of RAM. Sony takes the cake when it comes to the most visually striking exclusives. God of War and Horizon truly are stunning, even when I play them on a machine with just 1.8 teraflops of compute power.

I firmly believe that Xbox, at this stage, is playing to win. They have already confirmed that they are deep into architecting the future consoles. They have services like game pass which will surely transfer over to next gen and before you know it, you will have dozens of games available to you as soon as you buy the console. The 5 first party acquistions they just made means that they have 5 world-class studios making games for the next generation xbox, and what this means is that Xbox won't have the same issues that they had this generation when it comes to first party games. Historically, the king of one console generation has always lost the throne in the subsequent generation. Sega and nintendo kept on interchanging positions in the 80s and 90s. From the ps1 to ps2 generation, sony kept the throne. But the PS3-360 gen came alone and microsoft established themselves as the dominant player in the market(although sony did well to catchup in the end). Some would even argue the Wii won the generation but let's keep that piece of trash aside for a moment. In the current generation, we saw microsoft trail behind Sony, where the PS4 has ben selling almost 2 times faster than the xbone. That's the beauty of it I guess. No one's position is secure, no matter what the market may lead you to believe. Nevertheless, exciting times ahead.

(Btw, sorry for the late reply. Got a bit preoccupied with other stuff in the past week so couldn't find the time to type all this up)

I always find that RPG's have the toughest boss fights, I remember when I was a younger trying to beat Pokemon Diamond with one pokemon (Infernape) being complete hell (crazy to think it's been 11 years since). Have similar feelings about some Xenoblade and Final Fantasy bosses. :))

The time has come. The biggest game of this decade. I stayed up till 1 am just to watch this even though I had a 7 am uni start the next day :(

Worth the wait though.

I've been waiting 8 long years to play this game.

This will put every other game to shame.

Nothing comes close.

Nothing will.

Any one know when the new Nvidea cards are coming out? The 1080 has been out for 2 years I think

I've had the gtx 780 since it came out 5 or 6 years ago.

Thinking of upgrading the Plasma to an Oled and gaming at 4K

With my current card doubt I would get any where near 60 fps at 1080p.

More than four million people have watched a video in which a pro Fortnite player makes an emotional appeal to have a permanent ban lifted.

Jarvis Khattri was banned for using cheating software while playing the popular game.

Fortnite creator Epic imposed the ban even though Mr Khattri used the software on a game account separate to the one he uses to compete and stream.

Fans of Mr Khattri lobbied Epic via social media to get the ban lifted.

Fortnite is a "battle-royale" type game which allows up to 100 players to fight individually or as part of a team to be the last standing on a virtual battlefield. Players gather materials to build structures which can prove crucial in the game's close-quarters firefights.

'Huge mistake'
The type of ban imposed on Mr Khattri is believed to include key identifying details about the hardware he uses to play, and the net account through which he connects. This means it will be difficult for him to set up a new account and start playing again.

In a statement, Epic said it had a "zero-tolerance policy" for anyone using cheat software.

The software Mr Khattri used is known as an aimbot, which helps players land shots on opposing characters.

"When people use aimbots or other cheat technologies to gain an unfair advantage, they ruin games for people who are playing fairly," Epic said.

In a tweet, Mr Khattri said he took "accountability" for his actions.

He added: "I just wish I had known how severe the consequences were at the time and I would have never thought about doing it."

The UK-based player expressed similar remorse in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel on which he currently has about two million subscribers.

He said: "Obviously this is a huge mistake and it's completely wrong on my end."

Some of Mr Khattri's followers started using the #FreeJarvis hashtag to gain support for their call to have the ban lifted. Some pointed out that Epic had only imposed bans of two weeks on other pro players who were caught colluding during a recent tournament.

The ban prompted a spat between popular gaming streamers Ninja and DrLupo during an online chat.

Ninja, aka Tyler Blevins, who rose to fame through Fortnite, said Epic should be more lenient towards content creators who help the game thrive. DrLupo, aka Benjamin Lupo, had less sympathy, and said the ban was justified.

China is imposing a curfew on online gaming for minors, the government has announced.

Gamers under 18 will be banned from playing online between 22:00 and 08:00. They will also be restricted to 90 minutes of gaming on weekdays and three hours on weekends and holidays.

Its part of China's latest move to curb video game addiction, which officials say is damaging to children's health.

China is one of the world's largest gaming markets.

The official government guidelines - released on Tuesday - include spending limits for minors.

Gamers eight to 16 years old can spend up to 200 yuan (£22, $29) per month, while those between 16 and 18 years can spend up to 400 yuan on their gaming accounts.

China is the second-largest gaming market in the world, with US global revenue surpassing China for the first time this year due to China's increased regulations on the industry, according to research firm Newzoo.

What's the background?
China has repeatedly criticised video games for negatively affecting young people.

In 2018, the government announced the establishment of a gaming regulator - in response to concerns about near-sightedness in children - to limit the number of new online games, restrict paying time and develop an age-restriction system.

The same year, China enacted a halt on approvals for new video games, which lasted nine months, dealing a significant blow to the lucrative industry.

Some of the largest video game companies responded proactively, but enforcement and reliable age verification have been major concerns.

Tencent - the world's largest gaming company - addressed criticism by limiting game time to one hour per day for users under 12 and to two hours per day for users between 12 and 18. They also started requiring users to prove their age and identity against available state records.

But the new guidelines will apply universally to all online gaming platforms operating in China and will address enforcement concerns directly.

The administration will work with law enforcement to construct a unified identification system that gaming platforms can use to verify a user's identity and age with government data, a spokesman told state-run Xinhua news agency.

How harmful are video games?
Last year, the World Health Organization listed gaming addiction - which they call "gaming disorder" - as a mental health condition for the first time.

The most recent American Psychiatry Association manual of mental disorders does not officially recognise it, instead listing internet gaming disorder as a condition for further study.

But some countries have identified excessive gaming as a major public health issue, and many have private addiction clinics to treat the condition.

Resident Evil 2 has been named as the ultimate game of the year at the Golden Joystick awards.

The remake of the 1998 game takes place in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and was praised by critics and players.

The awards - which took place in London - are significant because they're mainly voted for by the public.

More than 3.5 million votes came in for 19 of the 24 categories in the award ceremony's 37th year.

Gaming legend Yu Suzuki, who spent decades at Sega but has more recently developed mobile games, won the Lifetime Achievement.

"Because my career started with the arcade game, the word joystick has a retro sound to it. So it's really such an honour," he tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

"Nowadays, there are just so many different types of games in terms of diversity - there are smartphone games, consoles and the variety of games as well as the number of platforms.

"It is a very healthy environment."

Fortnite, which was named as ultimate game in 2018, won the best e-sports title and the game's maker Epic Games was named as studio of the year.

Fortnite player Ewok came top in the best streamer category.

The 13-year-old, who is deaf, recently became e-sports team Faze Clan's first female player. She's also just swapped streaming platform Twitch for Mixer.

EA battle royale game won as the best multiplayer game.

Resident Evil 2 won a second award for for its use of audio.

Other winners include Cyberpunk 2077, which comes out in April, as the most wanted game

The game made headlines at the E3 conference earlier this year as it announced Keanu Reeves in a starring role as Johnny Silverhand.

The mobile game of the year was BTS World, where you play as the manager of the K-pop boyband.

Xbox's boss: Years before game streaming is mainstream
It will take many years before streaming video games becomes mainstream, the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has said.

The best gaming experience was still on a console or PC, Mr Spencer told BBC Click's Marc Cieslak.

His comments come just before Google launches its video game streaming service Stadia on 19 November 2019.

Xbox has a rival service called Project xCloud which is still in its public testing phase.
