The Halal Bubble and the Sunnah Imperative to Go Vegan

Mohamed Ghilan on 16 May 2016

Mohamed Ghilan is a Canadian Muslim originally born in Saudi Arabia. In 2007 he began his full time studies in the Islamic Tradition and has been consistently travelling to study various aspects of the… [more]

The popular conception of religion seems to be that of a set of rules and regulations that one adheres to. It is a handbook of what to do and what not to do without much attention given to what it all means and what it is about. For many Muslims, Islam is simply an explicit code of not only what to believe, but also how to articulate it in a way that does not get you in hot water with whoever appointed themselves as the gatekeepers of Paradise. Beyond this, Islam is viewed as nothing more than a set of obligations and prohibitions that one must abide by. In effect, when one chooses to fly with Islamic Airways they have to leave their intellect and conscience behind at the airport because these are items displayed on the diagram posted at security checkpoints outlining the prohibited articles to carry onboard.

Very long article but worthwhile I think. I was already to dismiss it straight away. I love meat. But I found this eye opening and thought provoking. Will certainly give consideration to reducing consumption of meat.

I love meat too and would struggle to give it up however I think it's undeniable, given the disgrace that modern industrial livestock production has become, that vegetarianism is better for the planet and therefore probably falls into line with what is written and preached in many of the major world religions.

I see this Halal word a lot. So do Muslims consider Internet Halal or Does this apply only to food items ?

eyond the environmental damage we are causing, the people and animals we abused just so we could have a barbeque or a walima will also seek us out for retribution on the Day in which neither wealth nor children will benefit.

Very well written but i'm biased towards it because i'm a vegetarian that turned and have seen first hand account of how bad the live stock are treated and the same supplied to my Dad's fast food!

When the calf is born it is removed within hours, sometimes before it has sufficient strength to walk, so that the milk meant for it can be diverted towards human consumption. In response the cow goes into frenzy and can cry out for days because it cannot find its offspring

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So instead of voicing for animal rights, become vegetarian.... How convenient..... Don't try to solve it but run away.

No wonder woman are blamed for rape because unintentionally they fail to keep man's urge in check due to their appeal.

Same logic applied for both the cases.

Wrong information. Without a constant sucking reflex, milk won't be produced or become lesser over time.

You need a calf for more production of milk.

The meat that comes out of slaughter houses is already not halaal. Only the method of slaughtering does not make the meat halaal. Pure halaal meat is when the animal is hunted, or raised well to be sacrificed when its time comes, not when it is subject to torture and abuse in slaughterhouses which are dozakh for animals.

Very, very, true, sir.

It is one of those things that I know deep in my heart will be the right thing to do but I just cant bring myself to do it.

But I am with you completely on that assessment.

You can make the cow lactate by an injection. Participate in ipl and bollywood threads and leave serious topics to adults.

Just because livestock production is a bit cruel, how can one come to conclusion that vegan is better for planet?

Nature selection. Tigers, lions wouldn't have existed had vegan is a better way of life. They would have evolved into herbivorous if that was the case.

Its called conscience FGS,that's the difference between animal and a human which is the core of the article!

We are talking about two different aspects.

Point is the statement, Vegan is a better way of life. If that was the case, evolution would have weeded out the Lions, Tigers. It didn't. Which means both needs to Co exist.

I left Google after knowing it stores my personal information. It is an enemy in disguise.

Duck duck go doesn't come up with anything.

This is what happens when one goes to get a medical degree in china or some unknown east european country. There is lots of research on hormone induced lactation, even in infertile cows.

Lol isn't that the point?

Had I known, i wouldn't have asked that questions in the first place. There's no shame in not knowing. Except God, we all are imperfect on one way or another :)

Even I have sort of come to the same conclusion...

And upon some research I found even in religion meat consumption isnt encouraged as much as Muslims eat. The Holy Prophet pbuh used to go days upon days without meat.

However Ive seen Muslims in general go ham on meat. I estimated last year that over the past 10 years (since 2006), there have been barely 5 days where I have gone without meat for a 24 hour period.

There have been some excellent documentaries over the years highlighting the appalling cruelty meted out to the animals that eventually end up on our dinner tables. I end up being vegan for a good couple of days every time I watch one of those documentaries, but I realize very quickly I wouldn't be able to survive without meat.

One trouble with the vegan diet is that is very hard to get all of the essential amino acids in sufficient quantities without ingesting excess carbs and fats. It can be done of course, but it is so much simpler through meat. Vegans in the West tend to rely quite a bit on soy products, but it has too much estrogen.

A compromise could be to only consume meat from animals that were humanely treated. However, this isn't always cost-effective, and when you have to ensure that it is also halal, that reduces the options even more.

One of these days though, I do plan to give a vegan diet a go for a few months.

I think modern Muslims are very much in awe of fast food as it's a comparatively new thing in Pakistan. My grandmother was an old village girl and she would barely touch meat, even when it was served she used to just dip her roti in the shorba. She was extreme, but the older generation in general seemed to have a much better handle on eating healthy, meat was occasional rather than the only option.
