He is one of the most talented young player going around in the world and possesses great range of strokes and excellent hitting ability.

However, it is unfortunate that England team management hasn't backed him well across all formats of the game.

While he is one of England's most impact player going around in limited overs, he needs to be backed up in the test format too.

With Bairstow establishing himself as one of their premier batsmen in tests, time has come up for him to give up gloves and bat at 4-5. As a result, Butler can establish himself as a wicket-keeper who can bat aggressively as well at 7.

However, England team management needs to back him up well and bring him back in the XI quickly because he is already 27 and a great talent like him should not be wasted.

We know the damage he can do in LO cricket but when it comes to test cricket I am disappointed with how his career has panned out so far. He hasn't played enough red ball cricket and also England didn't give him a long run imo.

I hope he can make a comeback in tests as he could be desvating at number 7 and is more than good enough keeper for test cricket.

In LO cricket he needs to improve his temperament in pressure situations as he has been a let down in the big situations so far. Still has enough time.

1 of my favourite players in the world today.

Modern day great?!?!?!

Why don’t we just do away with the facade and play Baseball..

He didn’t seem to know how to bat in situations at test level.

Some people just have a better mindset for LO cricket.

My fav English player and one of the favs going around.

Saw him first time in Natwest t20 2010 where he smashed a peak Afridi to all parts.

Kid hasnt justified his talent yet. More to ccome ;)

One of the best hitters of the ball in the world. Very similar to AB in the way he relies on unorthdox shots alot. Definitely my favorite English player.

Foakes is ahead of him and is a better keeper than jos.imo foakes is more deserving candidate for test cricket.

Buttler is one of my favorite players currently but I feel he is not taking his game next level even in LOI's.
I want to see more conventional shots in his batting & less shuffling in the crease to work on still head position like his idol abd.
And he must bat in top order in t20 cricket.

Devastating on his day but I feel he is overrated. Needs to be more consistent

I think he is nearly as talented as de Villiers, and is in the same mould too. If he applies himself, there is no reason why he cannot become a brilliant player across all formats over the next decade.

Go a bit easy there bro, Bairstow and Foakes ahead of him in Tests so he's more likely to go the Hales way

His reach is immense at the crease which puts unreal amount of pressure on the bowler - no room to err in length against him. For me, England's most dangerous white ball cricketer.

Both Bairstow and Buttler need to play Test cricket as specialist batsmen. They are both phenomenally talented, and England would end up wasting their potential by restricting them as WK batsmen. Besides, England is alarmingly short on specialist batting talent at the moment, but they do have quite a few talented WK batsmen coming up.

Bairstow needs to drop the gloves and move to number four, with Buttler slotting in at number five, followed by Stokes and Foakes.

Avgs 31 in Tests and in FC, nowhere near good enough . Foakes avgs 10 more and is a far better wk

Agreed and while some are saying that he doesn't know how to apply himself, well he can learn it and develop it with the experience.

AB had a very terrible defensive game in his initial years but he learned and developed it. I think Butler should bat at 7 and take gloves as well. As a result, he can take his time and develop his game in longer format.

He is a naturally aggressive batsmen and that will always be of extra benefit.

Not that young he is nearly 28 years old. He is talented though but should not play tests. He is not good enough to play tests.Good for limited overs only.

Bump! A sensational inning in IPL. I would argue in 2019 WC, he will be the real deal, not Stokes and not Root either.

Buttler is most destructive player in the team but root is their fulcrum. Stokes improved his odi batting last year and looks best player of fast bowling in England team along with roy.
But in t20 he is hit and miss.

I want buttler to bat at no.4 in 2019 worldcup to give him best chance to get set and launch attack in end overs.
Morgan should take responsibility as a finisher again like he used too before the arrival of buttler in the team.
Not to forget bairstow he is their dark horse.

Who were the bowlers? Not doubting his talent but IPL performances should be taken with a bucket full of salt.

The inning came against CSK which are the best IPL team when it comes to delivering under pressure.

A good player would have choked in the chase but Buttler is a special player IMO.

He is currently on 88* off 52 balls for RR against his former team MI. RR need just 4 more runs so it seems like Buttler has played a big role in this victory...

Has just finished the game with a huge six! So he finishes on 94* off 53 balls.

Buttler opening the inning has done wonders for RR.

Should England also open with Jos?

The already have Hales/Roy/Bairstow ahead of him in the pecking order, plus he can cause some serious damage down the order.

Looks like he's quite possibly back in the England test squad as a number 7 specialist batsman.

IPL and RR in particular has given him confidence and he has used it well. Many players with potential like Watson, Smith, Warner have been aided by their success in IPL. Add Buttler to that list.

His selection shows the importance of IPL performances. It has become more than just a T20 league now: it is international cricket in franchise form.

Buttler has played 81 FC matches and he averages just 31. At best, he can play as a wicket keeper batsman in tests.

Jos Buttler says his England Test recall for the series against Pakistan is a "fantastic surprise" and an "awesome opportunity".

The 27-year-old has not played Test cricket since the tour of India at the end of 2016. Since then, he has established himself as one of the world's most destructive white-ball batsmen.

This month, he hit an IPL-leading five consecutive half-centuries for Rajasthan Royals; form which has earned his Test recall for the two-match series against Pakistan, live on Sky Sports.

"It wasn't particularly on my radar", said Buttler. "It's a fantastic surprise, an incredible opportunity and it feels like another debut really.

"I sort of planned the end of this summer and I knew I was going to be available for a lot of Championship cricket for Lancashire, so that was a real focus of mine to target red-ball cricket. You always think maybe that race is run so to get that call - it's unbelievable and an awesome opportunity."

Buttler has smashed 490 runs in just ten matches in the Indian Premier League this season, and hopes to bring that attacking style of play into the Test side.

"They want me to play in the way that suits me and in the fashion that will get the best out of myself," he added. "For me it's about expressing myself, trusting my instincts and allowing that to flourish rather than fighting it.

"I'm pretty sure I won't be opening and trying to slog it in the first six overs but hopefully I can entertain."

Although Buttler has become renowned as one of the best white-ball bastmen in the world, he insists Test cricket is still the pinnacle of the sport.

"You get the feeling talking to everyone that they still feel Test cricket is the best", he added.

"Virat Kohli signing for Surrey to get used to playing in England so he can play well in Test matches shows that it's at the forefront of players' minds - Test cricket is still the pinnacle."

True to an extent. As per a leading cricket website, it is his IPL form that has earned him a test call-up.

Right call eventually by ECB. Took the game completely away from Pakistan IMO.

Let him play 10 more test than we will see .btw he was dropped very early in his inning on shadab bowling

Dropped catches are part of the game. Point is he flayed the Pakistan bowling the way AB used to in his days. babajee, some of the early predictions eventually getting right now.

Average of 33 is still very medicore in test after playing more than 15 test .lets see where he stand in test after 1 year

Ofcourse I am not claiming that he is a world class test batsmen or even if he will become one like that in future is a debatable thing. I just said that he has the potential for that and ECB should have backed him, rest upto him.

My argument was just that he is a test class level and hence needed to be backed by ECB. He can take his average to 40s in next 2-3 years.

Butler has hidden how weak England's batting really is. Would have lost by an innings the first test without him. Had he got out in the second game, would have been a close contest.

Butler is what stood between Pakistan and a test series victory in England!

Man of the match - been a good comeback for him.

He has been the main man in this test for england by taking the game away for pakistan on the third day.

The English selectors decision to pick him based on his IPL performance has been validated.

Cricket is cricket, even with the differences between formats. His performance in IPL showed he was in good form and deserving of a place in the Test team.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2018/05/16/jos-buttler-conquered-ipl-won-back-england-test-spot/

Well hejust returned from ipl where he scored quick 50s againsr thei inferior
IPL bowlers and then he whacks the superior PSL hardened BOWling attack in the second test match . Guys got talent

Buttler is a potential LOI great. A really dynamic batsman. But still has too many technical flaws to become a test great.

What an innings by Buttler in a different type of situation that he has been used to recently.

What a wonderful thread this has turned out to be by a wonderful poster. As always, OP never fails to impress.

He indeed has a really vast cricketing knowledge and there is a lot for youngsters to learn from it.

Indeed... a wonderful example of modesty for youngsters to emulate also :)

Would have been genuinely impressive had you created this thread 3 years ago.

He is going to be a big star. Clutch performance yet again. Consistently displaying his immense potential on the world stage.

Has the talent to become an ATG and potential to be the GOAT finisher. Dhoni should learn a thing or two frim him.

A solid player and a player with massive potential. Not just batting and wicketkeeping but potential with the captaincy as well. One of my favourite players to watch today.

IPL or no IPL...he has proven he is future star ( if not already)..

Closest thing to de Villiers as I said, although I don't recall the former playing the type of ODI knock that Buttler did yesterday. Those who say that he cannot play back-of-the-wall innings in Test cricket are wrong in my view. For precarious talents like him, it is all about applying himself. Over the last month, he has played a couple of innings that people thought were beyond his capabilities a month ago.

A once in many, many generations cricketer.

Is Buttler the next Steve Smith?? Both were seen as very average batsman, and were struggling into the team. But eventually, IPL performances lifted them and stroke of luck in selection, got them into the full glove. Both are late-bloomers.

I think Buttler has potential to become one of the ODI legends of the game. At 27, he already is among the top batsmen in the world(particularly after that knock) and is destined to become England's best limited overs batsmen till he retires. 2019 WC will decide the legacy of many England cricketers.

However, in tests, he is just a starter. So, has a long way to go.

Buttler was always better limited overs batsman than Smith & he never struggled to make England team because there is no like for like replacement for him in England cricket.
From his early days buttler is identified as a most talented English batsman due to his innovative stroke play, power and finishing ability. See his list A stats for that matter.
Craig kieswetter's freak eye injury accelerated his selection.

One of the classic display of batting under pressure.

Haha trying to figure out what kind of pressure he was under.

It was run of the mill odis against the worst attack I have seen. Bilateral series. Series decided. No pressure. Nothing. Wouldnt matter if they lost. Lets stop pretending he won a WC

He is a limitted over specialist for a reason. He has the power to muscle the ball to sixes. Wouldnt last against good bowlers, let alone thrive in test arena. No good ODI bowlers around to test him either so he is thriving. In tests, even average spinners will hve him for lunch.

Steve Smith rise had nothing to do with the IPL.

I think you are confusing pressure with big matches. Big matches themselves bring a different level of pressure but there can be pressure in bilaterals as well.

Will do well in LOI cricket but the only place he should be batting in tests is at 7 where he should be given the license to go all out and get runs rapidly ala Gilchrist. Should be given the gloves as well.

Haha read this again and you’ll know you are the confused one.

It's a stupid theory that good limited overs batsmen will struggle in tests. Modern limited overs cricket is way tougher proposition than tests, there you go I said it!

A good limited overs batsman can excel in tests. That said the likes of Cook or Root would struggle in the modern limited overs game. People used to call Warner a white ball specialist and look at him now?

They all have their flaws, against swing, spin, bounce etc.....but the pressures of the modern limited overs game is a lot more than tests. In test cricket your biggest advantage is that you can bide time, in limited overs one has nowhere to hide. A successful Limited overs batsmen today needs a 360 game, good footwork, a wide array of shots, ability to rotate strike, good physical ability and strength. The only thing the need to add to the repertoire to make it successful in tests is temperament.

Cook, Azhar Ali, Pujara, has all the temperament in needed for tests, but what them play competitive limited overs cricket and it's like fish out of water. I am sure Buttler's transition into a gun Test batsman will be far more successful.

He's ahead of De Kock now as the #1 wicket keeper batsman in the world in shorter formats.

An incredibly talented player who keeps getting better and better.

Cant believe this thread was created just 3.5 months ago. At that point, everyone thought Buttler's test career is over and there is no chance of him getting a call back to test cricket.

And now, he is the vice-captain of the England team and also one of their main batters. He scores runs at a good SR and when in zone can completely knock the opposition out of the game.

England should bat Jos at 5 and bring Ben Foakes as wicket-keeper batsmen at 7. Bairstow should bat in top 4 as well.

England are having 3 vacant spots at this point if we look at their batting lineup:-

____(Cook)
____
Root
____
Bairstow(wkt)
Stokes
Buttler

Surely, they cant fill all three spots anytime soon. Hence, it is better if they bring Ben Foakes in the XI and give him gloves, even if his batting isn't good. Those three vacant spots are anyways turning out to be useless for them.

The XI should be:-

_____(Cook)
_____
Root
Bairstow
Buttler
Stokes
Foakes(wkt)

OR

_____(Cook)
Bairstow
_____
Root
Buttler
Stokes
Foakes(wkt)

You cant afford to have a top 4 where your three specialist batters contribute nothing.

I felt India series should have been the last one for Cook and Cook himself should have announced this before and retire gracefully. But maybe he is waiting for the next Ashes. Time has come to take strict decision on him. England cant just keep sitting like this.

Buttler has been the best English test batsman this summer for me. Consistently scoring against both India and Pakistan. Certainly better than the overrated bairstow, past it Cook and out of sorts Root.
