The defeat in Bridgetown was embarrassing.

Certain players obviously performed poorly - Babar Azam and Asad Shafiq have clear temperamental issues to address, while Shadab Khan's selection unbalanced the bowling attack.

But there are other issues that people of Pakistani origin seem to be too deferential to seniority to admit.

The senior players let the team down badly - in spite of Younis Khan's excellent catching and Misbah's 99.

It was obvious on Day 1 that the pitch would deteriorate and be hard to bat on on Day 5. As much as I admire the epic blocking of Boycott or FAF, this was a game in which the batsmen needed to keep the game moving forward, because on Day 5 the conditions would not allow more than around 40-50 overs of survival.

But Younis and Misbah set the wrong tone, as if this was a game that the team batting fourth could afford to slow down.

And Misbah has more to be held accountable for.

The West Indies bowled Pakistan out on Day 5 for 81 without the leg-spinner bowling a single ball. Even Jason Holder bowled 11.4 overs on the trot.

The decision to only field 2 quick bowlers in a Test in the West Indies was an outrage.

But Misbah's fields on Day 4, which let the West Indies convert 41-2 into 235-4, were even worse.

You would think that in Australia he learned that making Yasir Shah bowl to a leg-side field - often round-the-wicket - is a proven failure which must never happen again.

But he did it again.

The West Indies got out of jail on Day 4. Just like England did at Edgbaston, just like Australia did at Melbourne.

Let out of jail because a team with too few fast bowlers - yet again - overbowled leg-spinners with absurdly non-threatening fields.

I hope that Mickey Arthur survives this. He has clearly spent the last year letting Misbah do things his way, but that way has lost 7 of the last 8 Tests, including 2 to the West Indies.

Pakistan needs more aggressive leadership. Leadership - and team selection - which can accelerate with the bat and attack with the ball when the need arises. Leadership which can stop picking an extra batsman, given that even with that extra batsman they keep losing.

And it's time for courageous selection policies. The team already has far too many old players - even after Younis and Misbah go there will still be Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed, Wahab Riaz and Yasir Shah the wrong side of thirty.

This is no time to recycle players the wrong side of thirty like Fawad Alam, Salman Butt, Mohammad Hafeez or Mohammad Asif.

Sarfraz Ahmed and Mickey Arthur need to be given a young team and the authority to play attacking cricket.

Because old age, too few quick bowlers and a defensive captain have caused 7 defeats in 8 Tests now.

You need balance in a test side. You need a player in the top 6 who can bowl 10-15 overs in a game at around 3 an over. Wickets are not important for the 5th bowler. Control is. But this player has to be a proper bat not a bits and pieces guy. I really don't see any player like that in the domestic circuit besides Fawad, maybe Hussain Talat can develop into one. But 31 or 32 is too young to abandon a player. The wrong side of 35 I agree but not 30. Not for test cricket.

Good points, agree with most of it.

Don't agree with pinning everything on Misbah though. I never expected him to play two leg-spinners, one of them who is an 18-year-old. Highly doubt that was his call alone.

25 plus overs from round the wicket , pakistan should have only been chasing 80-100 on this pitch if wasn't for some poor decisions in the field.

When you are going round and round in a circle then every point is a turning point.

Pakistan cricket is down in the dumps due to folks like Misbah, Inzi, Waqar and Mickey. They each have played their part in the constant humiliations we have been receiving in the last two three years. Unfortunately these faces will change but the situation will remain the same, since decision making from the top of the PCB is flawed and it flows down to the absolute bottom level.

Only hope is the elections in 2018 bring a favorable result and we have a government that appoints heads of PCB on merit rather than political affiliations, this will bring change in the entire setup of PCB and hopefully improve the decision making of the team.

Yup, we need to play attacking cricket and if we don't, then defeats will keep on piling up.

This criticism is always available to the critics. If the batsmen bat carefully, the run rate falls. However if the batsmen wish to push the run rate higher, they have to play more risky shots. And if they get out playing risky shots they are called "brainless".

It is not as if pushing the run rate higher does not bring with it greater risk of getting out. This is totally ignored when a low run rate is criticized.

I do not think that our batsmen are confident enough to play positive even on a road. Most of them just try to survive so that they get another game. Ahmed Shehzad is a prime example.

The main reason this keeps happening is the team management. Like Misbah said yesterday the staff hadn't discussed anything with the batsmen. So they just went there and batted according to their own philosophy ( in words of Misbah)
Instead of this Mickey and Misbah should encourage our bats to score at the least at a RR of 3,3 per session after seeing off the new ball in the first innings.

The first innings is key in a test match and in many ways decisive. Pakistan needs to bat with a strategy even if they are wearing the whites!

Nobody was asking them to go all Afridi on the bowling.. simple single double would have done the trick and kept the scoreboard ticking along. Misbah and Azhar instead decided to shut up shop and go on an epic tuk marathon even though at that point Pakistan was well ahead in the game. There was a point where these two had scored a whopping 16 runs in 10 overs.

What's the excuse of even blocking full tosses? There is a limit to everything. Our bats seem to dull to think longcterm the reason we need to bat with a general strategy.

so basically, had we scored at a runrate of 5 we would had won the game

The decision to play Shadab backfired. He's a tremendous talent, but in a test match where the pitch was doing the work for the spinners, it was more important to pick one who wouldn't give any loose runs. I think that was the difference in the end.

can we have the amazing cricket knowledge bankers comment on this post, (something i completely agree with btw). 1st innings of this test was amazingly poor, and its not misbah (as a batsmen) or Azhar to blame, bcz thats their strength, but likes of Shahzad, shafiq and Babar azam should be given a very harsh slap as they should have been the ones to make better run rate possible. Younus Khan was embarrassingly poor where he should have led the pack... wrong selectonn but cant blame the bowling as they still did their part

Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about because you have not followed Pakistan cricket in the last few years. The pattern by some legendary batsmen has been the same in the last 5 years. negotiate the fast bowlers and take the spinners to the cleanrers. The reverse sweeps, the slog sweeps, coming down the track is not that taking risk?lol

Misbah even struggles to rotate strike. how bad can you be to simply not be able to rotate strike?how much risk is in taking a single? but we see dot dot dot against pacers and then bang bang against spinners. It also seems that some of these players do all the hardwork for their 50s and once they get their satisfactory score then you see them playing all kinds of shots. it's just selfish and lack of skills combined.

just watch Chase innings. That's how they should have batted. cautious but ready to punish bad deliveries not block even the full tosses.

but it's too late. Give this farewell to legendary pair and let them achieve their milestones and then restart with couple of young players but better approach. I know Mickey can't wait for YK and Misbah to leave so he can take charge of things. future will be bright if he stays for two more years.

We played 140 overs. A run rate of 5 for 140 overs would mean we score 700. Oh yes we would have won with an innings to spare.

On a more serious note a RR of 3.1 would have resulted in 434, 3.2 would have given us 448. Run rate really should have been better but despite that we batted well enough given the great contributions of Asad, Shehzad, Sarfraz, Younis and Babar.

We bowled poorly in the 3rd innings considering the state of the pitch. In the end it was a combination of slow batting in 2nd innings which cost us 40-50 runs at the very least and some boor bowling+tactics in the 3rd innings which gave away atleast 40-50 runs too many.

Misbah retiring will definitely be a mixed blessing. He has served his purpose well during his tenure, steadying the team out of the crisis in 2010 to become a respectable test match force.

However I agree Pakistan really need a new approach. Our brand of cricket has become quite boring. And now it's clear no longer as effective. This team needs some enterprise.

I assume their goal was also to demoralize the bowlers by grinding them down. Unfortunately for them it did not quite work out that way.

It never does. They are international cricketers not gully mohallah level and this grinding down strategy only works against Pakistani cricketers who with their pot bellies start huffing and puffing if they have to be in the field for more than two sessions.

Postmortem of any defeat is generally useless !!! Many factors contributes to a final single event. What is needed, I think, is mental toughness. Other Teams have played on a Fifth day wicket and easily scored some 180 odd runs to win the Test. So why not us ??? Many PPers had predicted a loss if we had to chase more than 150 runs !!! How tragic !!!

this should be post of the week. The sooner we get rid of Misbah and Younis the better for us. Misbah mentality has not only given us defeats but also defensive players like Shafiq and Azhar. Misbah never had the talent to be an attacking batsman and because of his own insecurity he didn't allow youngsters who had different approach from him to settle in the team.

Test team is in desperate need of fresh imputence. I am Misbah fan but his style of play is over cautious. We had issues rotating strike and we're missing out on loose balls.

I don't think there was a need to block as much as Misbah and Azhar did. I think they should have rotated the strike a bit more.

I think we lost this test in our first innings by not posting an even larger total. We should have aimed to bat only once on this pitch after losing the toss as day five pitch was very difficult to survive on. Babar, Younis, Asad and Sarfraz failing in the first innings was very costly.

Number of full toss Shahzad blocked was a joke.

Agree with OP. This could well be a blessing in disguise if it leads to more youngsters in the team.
