New Delhi: Mohammad Kaif has become the latest cricketer to be at the centre of a controversy after posting pictures of himself performing 'surya namaskar' on social media.

"Surya Namaskar is a complete workout fr the physical system, a comprehensive exercise form without any need fr equipment.#KaifKeFitnessFunde," Kaif posted on Twitter alongside four pictures which depict him performing the ancient Indian exercise.

However, his gesture did not go down well with a section of people who accused him of insulting his religion through his actions.

Although a lot of Twitter users defended Kaif, the uproar prompted the former India batsman to defend his actions.

"In all 4pics, I had Allah in my heart. Cant understand what doing any exercise, Surya Namaskar or Gym has to do with religion. It benefits ALL," Kaif posted later.

India pacer Mohammed Shami had also run into a similar controversy a couple of days ago after posting a picture with his wife on social networking site Facebook.

That is a major problem amongst Muslim's that we're quick to judge our coreligionists. We should worry about our own salvation instead of poking our noses in to what other believers are doing. Kaif like all is answerable to Allah, not us.

Surya Namaskar is a great thing to do, I am sure Allah will forgive him. lol at these backward muslims whom are causing a controversy..

I have a massive sympathy for Mohammed Kaif ,remember the issues he faced during 2003 WC and now this,he is not even in the team but can't catch a break.

Its not like he saying any Hindu mantras while stretching his back,SC is genuinely intolerant nowadays and social media the medium for opinionated and judgmental folks, yes I'm judging the people that are judging Kaif!

Sorry would you mind elaborating on this?

His house was vandalized for poor performance in the WC...

Ah cheers for the clarification!

I thought it may have been another instance of holier-than-thou judgemental types causing a fuss. But instead another type of idiocy lol.

Yes do indeed feel sorry for Kaif for receiving this sort of treatment. And not that it is ever justifiable, but India performed very well in the 2003 WC, barring the final. It's quite bizarre to lash out at Kaif for that!

Anyways one positive is that these acts of vandalism, burning effigies etc in response to poor performances have slowly disappeared. I remember hearing after the 1999 world cup Wasim Akram's father in-law was kidnapped or something. No words at these sort of reactions to what at the end of the day is just a game.

Lol worse thing about Internet is it gives morons a platform to troll/give their sadistic views over petty things..

Yeah Agreed the burning of effigies etc has stopped, might have something to do with the rise in 20/20 that people no longer take cricket seriously...

Haha perhaps ;-).

I think just the amount of cricket going on has diluted the intensity and interest in from desi fans. Probably the introduction of T20 has indeed played a role in this.

Whatever the reasons hope we don't return to those days, it's just fun cricket after all :yk2

There is nothing wrong or unislamic in doing this.

Our religion is being led by our religious leaders and teachers.

The problem here are the Teachers and Ulema who have engrained these things in their students and followers.

Fatwa against 'un-Islamic' Surya Namaskar in MP

While Madhya Pradesh government is making all efforts to make the 'Surya Namaskar' exercise on Swami Vivekanand's birthday here tomorrow, a world record, Muslim leaders have opposed the move by issuing a fatwa against it.

Leaders of the minority community have termed the move as un-Islamic and equated it with idol-worship, which is prohibited in Islam. They also issued a fatwa in this regard on Tuesday which was also ratified by the Shahar Qazi, Sayyed Mushtaq Ali Nadvi.

The school education department has made elaborate arrangements to ensure maximum participation in the Surya Namaskar exercise so that a world record can be created by registering the feat in the Guinness Book of records, official sources said.

Directives have been issued to all the government and government-aided schools to ensure maximum participation in the exercise so that it can become a world record.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has clarified that the participation in the exercise is not compulsory.

State School Education Minister, Archana Chitnis told reporters, "Surya Namaskar is a Yogic exercise aimed at improving one's health and those not interested in taking part in it have an option to stay away from it. Sun is neither saffron nor green."

However, Muslim leaders have termed the move as an attempt to saffronise the education system.

Muslims are misled by Fatwa's like this and the Fatwa factories are there to be blaimed.

If it's just an exercise then I don't see a problem with that
