25. Egypt
US News calls Egypt "one of the world's earliest and greatest civilizations" and notes that its geography, including the Nile River and the sea, make it "a cultural and trading center."

Over history, "its location has also made it a prize to claim by empires and put it at the center of social and religious movements."

Egypt rose four places compared to last year, when it was ranked 29th.

24. Brazil

Brazil shot up this year's rankings: in 2019, it was ranked 30th in the world.

US News noted the country's huge size and draw as a tourist attraction, but also its upheaval, perhaps increased under the country's controversial president Jair Bolsonaro.

"Occupying half of South America's land mass, Brazil is the giant of the continent – both in size and in population. Brazil's history is filled with economic turmoil, veering from boom to bust, and its culture is a melting pot that has traditionally welcomed the world.

"Brazil is one of the world's top tourist destinations. However, the country in the 21st century confronts serious questions touching on poverty, inequality, governance and the environment."

23. Norway

Norway is another riser in the 2020 rankings, moving from 27th place in 2019 to 23rd in 2020.

US News notes its history in building maritime culture, and the impact of the Vikings on nearby countries.

22. Singapore

"Founded as a British trading colony in the 19th century, Singapore is a bustling metropolis in Southeast Asia and home to one of the world's busiest ports," US News said, while also noting the country's high GDP and low employment make it "one of the wealthiest nations in the world."

21. The Netherlands

The Netherlands also rose this year, having been ranked 26th in 2019.

US News notes that "Three major European rivers - the Rhine, Meuse and Schelde - run through neighbors Germany and Belgium into the nation's busy ports."

20. Sweden

Sweden was ranked 21st in 2019, meaning it rose this year.

US News says it "is one of the largest countries in the European Union by land mass."

19. Spain

US News notes its influence around the world after decades of colonialism.

18. Qatar

Qatar is another big riser. It was listed as 24th last year.

US News notes its monetary wealth despite its small size: "Now rich in oil and natural gas, Qatar is one of the wealthiest countries in the world."

17. Italy

US News notes that it attracts 40 million tourists every year.

16. Turkey

Turkey was also ranked 16th in 2019.

US News says it is "home to a unique intersection of culture as the nation bridges Asia with Europe."

"For more than a decade, power struggles between a military-backed secular government and an increasingly popular religious movement have raised concerns about government stability."

15. Australia

Australia ranked the same position last year.

US News notes that the country is unique in that it takes up a whole continent.

14. India

India rose three places compared to last year, when it was ranked 17th.

Home to 1.4 billion people, India "is the world's second most-populous nation after China, and has roughly one-sixth of the world's population."

13. Switzerland

Switzerland rose one place compared to last year, when it was 14th.

US News notes: "It's one of the world's wealthiest countries, and has been well-known for centuries for its neutrality."

12. Canada

Canada is in the same position it was last year.

Canada is the second-largest country in the world by landmass, and US News says its "expansive wilderness to the north plays a large role in Canadian identity, as does the country's reputation of welcoming immigrants."

11. United Arab Emirates

The UAE's position is the same as it was in 2019.

"While conservative at heart, the UAE is one of the Gulf's most liberal countries, with a constitution that allows for freedom of religion."

10. Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia fell one place compared to last year, when it was ranked 9th.

US News calls it the "giant of the Middle East" because of its landmass, and notes its importance for Muslims.

"Millions of devout Muslims from around the world participate in a pilgrimage to Mecca each year."

9. South Korea

South Korea was ranked 10th, one place lower, last year. US News noted the ongoing conflict with North Korea.

8. Israel

Israel was also ranked 8th last year.

"For its relatively small size, the country has played a large role in global affairs. The country has a strong economy, landmarks of significance to several religions and strained relationships with many of its Arab neighbors," US News said.

7. Japan

Japan was also ranked 7th last year.

US News calls it "one of the world's most literate and technically advanced nations."

6. France

France's position is unchanged compared to last year.

US News said: "It is difficult to overstate the influence France has on the world, both in the past and today.

"Located in Western Europe, France is one of the world's oldest countries, and its reach extends around the globe through science, politics, economics and perhaps above all, culture. Starting in the Middle Ages, France evolved through kingdom, empire and finally, into a republic. It was one of the first nations to champion the rights of the individual."

5. United Kingdom

US News calls it "a highly developed nation that exerts considerable international economic, political, scientific and cultural influence."

It also noted the country's vote to leave the European Union, and said this "ushered in anxiety about the country's role on the global stage."

4. Germany

"Germany, he most populous nation in the European Union, possesses one of the largest economies in the world and has seen its role in the international community grow steadily since reunification," US News said.

3. China

China's position has not changed since last year.

US News says it is "home to one of the world's oldest civilizations" and says it is "the world's most populous and is considered the second-largest by land mass."

2. Russia

The scale of Russia is difficult to imagine," US News said.

"It is the world's largest country by land mass – nearly twice as big as Canada, the world's second-largest nation – and covers all of northern Asia and much of Eastern Europe. It shares land borders with more than a dozen countries, and shares sea borders with Japan and the United States."

1. United States

US News calls it "the world's most dominant economic and military power" and notes now its "cultural imprint spans the world" thanks to its production of movies, TV, and music.

It also noted that President Donald Trump's positions on immigration and trade "have raised questions around the world, including from the country's closest allies, about the nation's future course on the global stage."

This list must be wrong, we are in 2020 and India has attained supa powa status. Any list that puts them below #2 is a farce.

Am just happy to be above Turkey this year, Choti choti khushiyaan of mine :P

This will bruise some egos. Most Indians believe they are #3.

Who cares about these rankings? Not 1/3rd of our population languishing in poverty. Not the educated/qualified youth unable to find jobs or farmers stuck in debt trap.

Pakistan has to be in the top ten. This list is flawed. Not ahead of India in Statistics but ahead of the Middle Eastern armies for sure.

The fact that India and its citizens have "accepted" the continuous suicides of farmers is scary. Media is carefully kept silent. Just imagine, day in day out working in fields to feed your family but some politicians/bankers just won't let you get out of debt trap. Hell on earth.

What a tragedy.

My grandfathers were farmers in Punjab(Pak). Alhamdulillah, they had enough acres and rarely had to take loans. As a son of farmers I sympathize with fatmers' struggles, doesn't matter their nationality/religion/race.

Surely a nuclear power such as Pakistan who actually have a pretty solid army and have some say in the Middle East should be ahead of a country like Norway.

Norway is peaceful but they aren’t powerful

Powerful in what sense? Economy? Military?

Surprised to see Norway on the list. Didn't know they were powerful.

These rankings based on subjective criteria are usually clickbait. Here is another one, also reported by Business Insider like the OP, which puts the Indian military at #4.

https://www.businessinsider.com/most-powerful-militaries-in-the-world-ranked-2019-9#5-france-21

The country with the 3rd largest economy (measured by PPP GDP, and 5th largest in nominal terms), and the 4th most powerful military shouldn't be ranked at the 14th "most-powerful-countries-on-earth". It should either be #3 or #4.

What's the use of ranking 3rd or 4th when our country is unemployed and below poverty?

Pakistan were 22nd last year
http://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/most-powerful-countries/

What are we this year?

Why have we gone down?

It appears Pakistan didn't make it to the list of the top 73 countries, though great powers like Qatar, Ukraine, Luxembourg, Kazakstan, Belarus, Greece, Myanmar, Guatemala, Kenya, Estonia, Sri Lanka etc. did.

Hard to believe Pakistan is actually behind the above countries. This is the flaw of such subjective rankings.

In a ranking of militaries, which I think is more accurate, Pakistan comes in at #15.

What's the use of ranking 3rd or 4th when our country is unemployed and below poverty?

I didn't say there was any use. I only offered my opinion of a more accurate ranking of "powerful countries". India is obviously a "powerful country" in which a large section of the population lives in poverty.

There are a lot of homeless people in the US too, but as a percentage they are much smaller than the Indian poor.

real rankings are these

rest of countries are just for number filling

United States

Daylight

China(demography, liquid cash, now a decent military, improving scintific output)

Russia(geography , geographic resources, military)

UK/Germany/France(original knowledge creaters , historical cultural impact on global sciences and arts , they were leaders in many fields before rise of USA, most founding fathers of USA are also of anglo germanic stock)

Japan/France(economy, soft powere, culture , knowldge creation and so on)

now switzerland/sweden/netherlands and co(small european countries but immense focus on quality over quantity to the extent per capita citations of swiss research beats USA by a margin, they focus on future:liberal societies, high tech environement friendly societies and so on)

South Korea (rising kid)

rest is just cope.

Our PM couldn’t even attend a summit without the permission of Saudi Arabia.

We shouldn’t even be in the top 100. We are not a sovereign state.

Just coz they don't show India as a supa powa they're fake?? lol

You're 4th in the index because of your large population hence you have a very large manpower. Your machinery is a lot older than most countries who are in the top 10. You're just 4th because of your manpower nothing else really.

Look at your GDP per capita LOL. China has nearly the same amount of people as you and has a much bigger economy and a higher gdp per capita than you. over 100 countries have a higher GDP per capita than you.

You ain't that powerful nor are you a supa powa

A lot of sour grapes in this thread. Perhaps it's incorrect, yes. But everyone getting insecure for India being higher than Pakistan? It's just embarrassing.

Considering the control of wealth, economy, artillery and influential capability: USA is the most powerful country no matter how you look at it followed by China. After that I think Russia and Germany. I think Israel and Saudi Arabia comes after.

Israel - "For its relatively small size, the country has played a large role in global affairs. The country has a strong economy, landmarks of significance to several religions and strained relationships with many of its Arab neighbors,"

Got to really admire Israel for the way it has developed since it's inception.

Who comes up with these kind of crap rankings? Anyways, what does this mean to a common man? nothing. Pretty much 99% of the world population want to live in a secured society that conforms to their belief and earn a living.

Unsure Russia is #3. They have a lot of nukes and a lot of resources but a weak economy. Perhaps their use of soft power / alternative warfare is key to their ranking.

Surprising that UK is ranked above France as we have just shot our international influence in the foot with Brexit.

Actually, their #2 which I think is right. As the rankings are about the most powerful countries, Russia would beat anyone in a war bar the US.

I also reckon UK should be ranked above Germany never mind France. The UK is a stronger military power with nukes than Germany. Now it may be slightly weaker economically than both Germany and France but no European city can compete with London in terms of its influence on the world stage including economy and cultural diversity.

Lol.

Look at the insecure souls taking solace in India's 14th ranking and getting all worked up for obvious reasons. :))

So??doesnt matter to us ,I want pakistan to enter in the list in genuine way even its after two hundred years , we should be producing original knoweldge in arts and sciences and socety should have gone through evolution before entering in such lists . This generating sheer numbers because of population , natural resources is not my cup of tea. Tommorrow india becuasue of 1.4 billion people will become a similar sized economy to Germany , will it become germany? not by a galaxy mile.

Are you thick?

It’s obviously a mistake.

We were 20th in 2017, 22nd in 2018 and 22nd again in 2019.

I know you’re not very bright but even a person like you should realise that there must have been a mistake as no country goes down 50 places even though they were ranked in the early 20s for the last 3 consecutive years.

It's not a mistake, it's just that 80 countries were selected and Pakistan wasn't one of them this year.

What is all the hoopla about exactly :29: If anyone wants to believe that Slovenia is more powerful than Pakistan, let them.

You could have just checked that article once before making a mockery of yourself with your silly emojis and unnecessary name-calling out of impulsive insecurities.

But alas. You had different plans. :)

Doesn’t make sense
why would they not be there even though we ranked in the 20s in 2017,2018 and 2019?

There must be a reason

I checked the article

So you actually think Pakistan fell down 50 places since the feb 2019 article?

If you do then my prayers are with your family

Doesn’t make sense
why would they not be there even though we ranked in the 20s in 2017,2018 and 2019?

There must be a reason

They rank the 80 'best countries' first and then subdivide then into other categories. Pakistan was 75th out of 80 in the best countries list last year (22nd in the subdivision of 'power rankings') and probably fell outside the best 80 countries due to the economy this year. So it just hasn't been ranked in that list of 80 and thus has no power ranking in 2020.

Hope that clears it up.

Amazing how Israel features in this list!

Thank you for this comment. Unfortunately the majority are just using this pointless ranking for bragging and straight up mocking.

The OP is really quite a stupid ranking which is completely consistent with the biases of Western Liberal Corporate Establishment.

Case in point, for "A Leader" India (Modi) scores 1.8 while China (Xi) scores 8.8.

You may believe that the head of a dictatorial party that has recently been throwing millions of Muslims into concentration camps deserves an 8.8 ranking while a democratically elected PM deserves 1.8, but that is your choice.

Paradoxically the Liberal Establishment loves dictatorships, while the Corporate Establishment loves the money they make from dictatorships. An essentially stupid ranking.

The rankings are based on the positive effect the leaders have had on their country and how they’ve helped their country move forward economy.

The rankings are pretty accurate.

The rankings are pretty accurate.

My idea of "positive effect the leaders have had on their country" is not throwing millions of your citizens into concentration camps, but to each his own I guess.

Seems like it’s only US for now by far.
They get away with Taiwan, Iran , Gaza, Tariffs anything

MIGA is trending right now

They were not this powerful before WW2. They became #1 after WW2.

Question is how did world let them become this big? They should've been kept in check.

Anyway, all empires collapse and I expect US to collapse too (probably from within).
