The Newcastle United Thread

Once we got to 5 the game was done

If we maintained the intensity then 10 would have been on the cards but we have 2 games this week so easing off made sense

I know what you mean, but spurs deserved a 10-0 beating.

Howe getting you top 4 in 1st full season just shows what a good manager he is

Another excellent performance from Newcastle tonight.

4-1 away to Everton and up to 3rd.

Looking all set for a Champions League spot.

Newcastle have been immense in 2nd half of season when so many expected then to wilt and drop out of top 4, just shows you can turn a club round in 18 months with a good manager and none of this fake "trust the process" nonsense.

I can see Newcastle adding a few PL proven player to their squad next year and the pushing for top 4 again and a trophy.

I'm not sure it's entirely fair to compare our situation with other clubs, it was a bit unique

We had 14 years of Mike Ashley, consistently the worst owner in the league, apathy had well and truly kicked in and we were very much a zombie club going through the motions. There were brief positive moments such as the season we finished 5th (with Ba and Cisse) and Rafa as manager but Ashley always ensures it quickly unraveled

On top of the above we had the worst manager in the league and in all aspects the club was an absolute mess. The takeover was huge, it was a fresh start and we were at rock bottom so up was the only way we would go and for the first time in a long time everything about the club was aligned and as you can see we are rocking right now

Obviously we did very well by identifying the right manager, I dread to think where we would be if we got someone like Gerrard or Lampard as certain pundits/journalists were suggesting

If we get top 4 this season then the aim would have to be to do that again next season however it won't be easy playing Tuesday/Wednesday and then on the weekend, we've not had to juggle that though it helps that next season 5th place is likely to be a CL place as well

Newcastle United's owners are interested in Paris St-Germain's Brazil forward Neymar, 31, as they look to make a 'marquee' signing this summer. (90min)

Superstar players such as Paris St-Germain's Neymar and Al Nassr's Cristiano Ronaldo are out of Newcastle United's financial reach, says Magpies boss Eddie Howe.

Newcastle are one of the richest clubs in the world following a takeover by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) in October 2021.

It has seen the club linked with moves for the likes of Neymar and Ronaldo.

"We could not be able to come close to affording those players," said Howe.

"They are the best players in the world. We are never going to be in a position currently to afford those transfer fees and wages, so we need to go underneath and find them young and develop them into the players they can be."

Since the takeover, Newcastle have spent about £250m on signings including Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, Nick Pope and record purchase Alexander Isak.

They have helped the club to third in the Premier League with five games left this season as they close in on securing qualification for the Champions League.

Asked about Portugal forward Ronaldo and Brazil's Neymar, Howe said: "That kind of speculation has been there from day one since the takeover.

"Naturally everyone has then assumed the biggest names in world football will be going to Newcastle.

"Now, we've not recruited that way. Financially, we can't recruit that way at the moment, but also we have to bring the right people and the right players into the group.

"I will say the transfer market is such a complex decision, you can't just pick a name and bring them in.

"There's got to be a lot of thought going into what we're doing both financially and looking at the players."

He added: "Those two players are unbelievable players. We are linked with different names.

"I know what direction I want to take the team in and what we can and can't do in the transfer market."

Newcastle still on course

Newcastle United's fans could not hide their disappointment at the final whistle as all their efforts to dent Arsenal's title challenge and lift their own Champions League aspirations came to nothing.

It removes some of the margin for error as they chase a place in the top four, but the manner in which they ran Arsenal so close and made the margins so fine was an example of their progress this season.

Who knows what might have happened had Murphy's shot in the opening minutes gone in instead of bouncing back off the woodwork? But in the end Arsenal had the better chances and claimed the three points.

The Toon Army is alive with self-belief and optimism, even cheering their side loudly after the final whistle as manager Howe took his players on a lap around the pitch.

Isak showed what a quality acquisition he has been, but there was no joy for key midfield man Bruno Guimaraes who did not have one of his better days.

Newcastle stay third, two points ahead of Liverpool in fifth, the good news for Howe and his players being that they remain firmly in control of their own destiny.

Running out of steam.

Could it be they miss out on a top 4 position with Liverpool doing so well?

Superb tonight against Brighton.

The fans were brilliant and their big players like Trippier, Bruno, Wilson all on top of their game tonight.

Looking like job done for a top 4 finish.

Massive, massive win! Champions League football returning to St James Park after 20 odd years.

Massive, massive win! Champions League football returning to St James Park after 20 odd years.

Not quite yet, 3 more points needed

Hopefully we can get it done on Monday night

Squad is being stretch to it's limit as Willock is now injured, we basically have no CM other than Joelinton and Bruno, who have really been ran into the ground

I think Newcastle will struggle next year as expectations go wild. In 96, they should have won the title had it not been for 2 poor keepers in Hislop and Srnicek. This team had little expectations this year and have done amazingly well due to calm and intelligent leadership of Eddie Howe. But next year the expectations will be much higher and history shows they struggle under the weight of expectations

With Arab money flowing in Newcastle will definitely continue their form next season, they are chasing Sadio Mane who will be an excellent addition

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is "performing at the best level I've seen him at", says manager Eddie Howe.

As Bournemouth manager, Howe signed Wilson from Coventry in 2014 and the pair spent six years together with the Cherries, before being reunited at Newcastle when Howe was appointed by the Magpies last season.

The England international has scored 18 times this term, including eight goals in his past six appearances.

His tally is the most by a Magpies player in a season since Alan Shearer scored 22 in 2003-04.

"The season he was in the Championship with us, my first season with him at Bournemouth, I thought he was electric," said Howe.

"But this is at the very highest level, this is against the best defenders in the world and the best teams in the world, and he’s performing at probably the best level I’ve ever seen him at.

"I complimented him [after the Brighton game], not in terms of the goal he scored, but just his intelligence on the press for us. He’s the one who has to set the chain off and he has to get it right. If he gets it wrong, the whole team suffers. His tactical understanding was as good as I’ve seen."

0 0 against Leicester tonight.

A point that's enough to take Newcastle into the Champions League.

Well deserved.

Congrats to Newcastle, great achievement to make top 4.

Eddie Howe has been brilliant.

But I doubt they will get out of the group stages in the CL, unless they get a lucky draw.

Or if they splash some of the cash.

Players might be more interested in joining them now they are in the Champions League next season.

Add a couple of top class signings to that side and there'll not be that many teams who can put them away.

Aaaaand breathe

Absolutely buzzing, been a long season and we can properly enjoy it now

Going to be a fun summer, need to make some signings because our squad has some depth issues

They need more than a couple imo, around 5/6 very good players with experience in Europe too would be ideal.

Europe is very gruelling, the travel, the pressure and the quality you face. If Newcastle come 3rd , they will be playing on Thursdays.

But a good challenge and experience for the club. The PL is so competitive even with spending top 4 next season will be tough for all teams barring City and LFC imo.

If we get a brutal group then it will be a struggle (Think Napoli, Bayern and Inter)

However there'll not be many teams that fancy playing us, especially at SJP

Plus we'll clearly be active in the summer, if we make 2-3 Bruno type signings plus a few others we'll be much improved as a result

Congrats but gutted for Liverpool, though I'd rather have seen Liverpool oust Man Utd than Newcastle.

Not over yet but its pretty much academic that United will qualify.

Newcastle have been top 3 for most of the season, that's not a fluke. They were also leading 3-1 against Manchester City at one point in the season before being hauled back by a couple of Haaland goals. Man City who are far and away the best team club in the world. Add three more world class players to that squad and they will compete with anybody. We've seen it all season.

Newcastle are closing in on another top talent for the future: 2004 born winger Yankuba Minteh is set to join Magpies on permanent deal from Odense, work permit pending.

The Gambian winger will cost €7m

James Maddison: Newcastle lead Tottenham in race for Leicester and England midfielder

Newcastle are currently leading Tottenham in the race to sign Leicester's James Maddison.

Both clubs are interested in signing the attacking midfielder, who has only a year left on his contract, this summer.

Newcastle's interest stems back to the January transfer window, when Leicester were unwilling to sell the 26-year-old.

But following relegation, the Foxes will now listen to offers.

Newcastle are able to offer him Champions League football over Spurs, who are also long-term admirers.

However, Tottenham may formalise their interest following the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as head coach.

Postecoglou and Spurs are now in the process of making decisions on how to improve the squad this summer and which players will stay or leave to facilitate desired change.

Maddison is one of several Leicester players expected to depart, a list which also includes winger Harvey Barnes.

Sandro Tonali: Newcastle United are close to signing Italy midfielder from AC Milan

Newcastle United are close to signing Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali from Serie A side AC Milan, according to his agent.

The 23-year-old is expected to sign a six-year contract and complete his medical in the coming days.

Speaking to Italian media, Tonali's agent Giuseppe Riso said the transfer could be worth up to 80m euros (£68.5m) including add-ons.

He said final details are being agreed by both sides.

"When such an important offer is received it is difficult to refuse both for the club and the player," he said.

Riso added that personal terms have been agreed between Newcastle and Tonali.

Tonali helped Milan win the Italian title in 2021-22 and was part of the side which reached last season's Champions League semi-finals.

He is currently part of Italy's squad at the Under-21 European Championships.

Tonali developed through the ranks at Brescia and made his professional debut for them in Serie B at 17.

Brescia were promoted to Serie A in 2018-19 and, while the club were relegated the following season, Tonali made his Italy debut during the campaign when he came on as a substitute against Liechtenstein in October 2019.

He joined AC Milan on loan in the summer of 2020 and, after making the move permanent the following year, scored five goals in 36 top-flight appearances as the club won the Italian title in 2022.

Tonali scored twice in 34 Serie A outings as the San Siro side finished fourth last season, while he made 12 appearances in the Champions League before Milan were beaten by rivals Inter in the semi-finals.
