PHF names 20-member squad for Junior World Cup

LAHORE: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) on Wednesday announced the national junior side’s 20-member squad for the upcoming FIH Hockey Junior World Cup.

Abdul Hanan Shahid will lead the team in the tournament, set to be held in Kuala Lumpur from Dec. 5-16.

Announcing the squad at a press conference here, newly appointed chief selector Asif Bajwa said that only three changes were made in the roster that participated in the Sultan of Johor Cup, the team’s previous assignment.

Asif hoped Pakistan would be able to surprise much their established opponents in Belgium and Holland, who are grouped with the Green Shirts.

“If our team succeeds in pulling out surprises, we will be assured that our declining hockey will be in safe hands,” he said.

Bajwa said the players were were fully fit and that if they succeeded in following the strategy and planning prepared for the tournament, they could win it.

Asif vowed only merit would be considered in selection and that it was the only way to bring national hockey back on the right track.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s newly-appointed head coach Roeland Oltmans said he was fully satisfied with the team selection.

“I have already worked with this team and I know the boys have a lot of talent,” he said. “This team is looking stronger than in the past.

“Our first target is to qualify for the quarter-final stage and then we will move forward according to the plan,” Oltmans said. “We are not too lucky as we are in a tough pool where top teams like Belgium and Holland are present. Yes it is a challenge and I like to face challenges.”

Oltmans believed Pakistan possessed talent in the sport and urged the private sector and the government to invest its resources into its development through a comprehensive plan.

What a great comeback by our young lads. It would be great, if they could go the distance and clinch a title for Pakistan.

only problem is that they are not consistent enough to keep that sort of performcnce going for long time.

But yeah hoping for the best!

Pakistan beat New Zealand in Junior Hockey World Cup

With Arshad Liaqat scoring a brilliant hat-trick, Pakistan handed New Zealand a 4-0 defeat in their second match of the ongoing Junior Hockey World Cup being played in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

Liaqat scored three goals in the 19th, 30th and 54th minute of the match to put the Green Shirts in commanding position. Captain Abdul Hanan Shahid also scored a goal for Pakistan on a penalty corner in the 32nd minute of the match.

Placed in Pool D, Pakistan will play their final group match against Belgium on December 9. Top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

On Wednesday, the Pakistan hockey team had made an impressive comeback to register a 3-3 draw against the Netherlands in their opening match of the Junior World Cup.

Down 2- in the first half, Arshad Liaqat, Sufian Khan, and Arbaz Ahmed scored crucial goals for the Green Shirts to bring Pakistan back in the game.

Pakistan finished on the men’s Junior World Cup podium on each of the first five events played between 1979 and 1993, clinching gold at the inaugural event and claiming one silver and three bronze medals.

Since then, two fifth place finishes in 1997 and 2009 have been their best performance. They finished 11th at the Bhubaneswar 2021 World Cup, which was a historic low for Pakistan.

However, under the guidance of legendary Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans the team has improved performance which was evident from the silver medal they secured at the Junior Asia Cup earlier this year.

A narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of India was their only defeat of the competition, with Abdul Rehman scoring nine times to finish joint top scorer and Hannan Shahid bagging the award for player of the tournament.

The team recently finished fourth at the Sultan of Johor Cup, with penalty corner specialist Arbaz Ahmad netting four times in the competition.

But we feel we have a task to fulfill and that is to take the team to the quarter-finals. For that, we have to beat Belgium. I hope and pray that the team plays with the same spirit which it showed against New Zealand. It is 3rd consecutive time that Pakistan hockey team couldn’t qualify for the Olympics. Pak won Gold medal in 60 Rome Olympics, 68 Mexico Olympics and 84 Los Angles Olympics, but hasn’t participated in Olympics since 2012. Sad state of Pakistan hockey which needs good administrator not the former Olympians, some of them have been involved in financial bungling.

Pakistan captain Ammad Butt: "I want to tell you that the boys haven’t been paid for the last 6 months. The boys are giving 100 percent and their blood and sweat for Pakistan but the way we are treated it’s totally unfair."

With such treatment with the players, it is unfair to demand great results from them. PHF should be doing better than this.

No Salary, Medical Benefit In Pakistan Hockey For Six Months, Senior Players Clash With Management

The never ending ordeal of Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) continued as the cash-strapped national body has not paid its employees for the last six months. According to details, all the employees of PHF at its headquarters in Lahore and sub-office in Karachi are still waiting to get their salaries for the last six months. Over 80 office and ground employees are said to be in dire straits as they have also not been getting any medical benefits for the last six months.

To make matters worse even the national senior players have neither been paid their contract salaries or allowances for the last 4-5 months for even participating in the recent Olympic qualifiers in Oman.

A source aware of the developments said that Pakistan captain, Imad Shakeel Butt and some other players also clashed with the team management during the qualifiers over the issue of non-payment of their daily dues.

"At one stage Butt even threatened not to play further matches until the dailies were cleared," the source said.

The nadir is that no one knows who is to blamed for this sorry situation in Pakistan hockey.

While the sacked former President Brig (retd) Khalid Sajjad Khokar blamed his predecessors and also his successor for the financial crunch, the source said it is a fact that the government has not only stopped giving funds to the PHF, its accounts have been suspended because of an ongoing inquiry into financial misappropriation of funds by the federation.

"Presently the PHF is said to owe around 80 million rupees in dues to its employees, players, coaches and other clients," the source added.

Tariq Bugti nominated as PHF president: PSB

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has nominated Tariq Bugti as president of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), the Pakistan Sports Board confirmed on Tuesday.

“Upon acceptance of the resignation tendered by retired Brig Mohammad Khalid Sajjad Khokhar from the post of President, Pakistan Hockey Federation and in pursuance of powers conferred under Article 15 of the Constitution of Pakistan Hockey Federation, the Prime Minister in his capacity as Patron-in-Chief, PHF is pleased to nominate Mr Tariq Hussain Masoori Bugti as President, PHF with immediate effect. Pakistan Sports Board’s earlier letter/Notification No.F.7-18/2020-PSB(NF) dated Dec 22, 2023 stands modified,” read a notification issued by the PSB on Tuesday.

When contacted by Dawn, PSB Director General Shoaib Khoso confirmed that the PM had nominated Tariq as his nominee for the post of president PHF. “[Yes] we have issued a notification in this regard,” Shoaib said.

It is shocking to see Pakistan not qualifying for 3 straight Olympics, which is the biggest event for the sport because of its long history.

I still remember Sohail Abbas and his amazing drag flicks which would be a constant source of pain for the Indian team even when we managed to outplay Pakistan. Abbas was like a cheat code for Pak, who could be relied upon to convert most of his PCs.

Goalkeeper Waqar Younus laments PHF apathy during hard times

Pakistan goalkeeper Waqar Younus, who underwent a knee surgery at local a hospital recently, has expressed strong displeasure over the treatment meted out to him by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) during tough times.

“I was sent back from Oman after I suffered a knee injury during the Olympic qualifying round match [in January this year]. Surprisingly, the PHF also withdrew the daily allowance of my remaining days in Oman before sending me back to Pakistan instead of helping me to recover,” a dejected Waqar said while talking to reporters from the Jinnah Hospital, a government institution, on Friday.

“I did not receive any assistance hand from the PHF, despite the fact that I got injured while on duty,” the player said while lamenting “no PHF official came to meet me before the operation”.

Waqar regretted his fellow players also did not come to inquire about his health, and only contacted him over telephone. “This is the reward which I have received for my eight-year services for hockey.”

However, Waqar said that he received encouraging messages from his department Wapda and his Dar Hockey Academy for financial assistance.

It may be mentioned here that due to struggle for power among different hockey lobbies in the country, neither PHF affairs nor those of hockey players are being managed satisfactorily.

Recently, the PHF was split into two factions, one headed by Shehla Raza as president and the other by Tariq Hussain Bugti.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PHF is yet to pay dues of around Rs60 million to its players and officials. To one’s utter surprise, the federation staffers have not received their salaries for the past seven months.

In addition to the decline in hockey in Pakistan, support for hockey players has also diminished.

After reading such news, I don't think any parents in Pakistan would want their children to become a hockey player. PHF should be taking better care of the players.

Oltmans approached by PHF as Pakistan eye two major events

Roelant Oltmans has been approached by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to return as the national side’s head coach with the Azlan Shah Cup and the FIH Nations Cup around the corner.

The Dutchman has served the Pakistan senior and junior sides in the role during different periods since 2004 and was involved with the youth side in in his recent-most stint.

The cash strapped PHF is currently looking to hire Oltmans only for the Azlan Shah Cup and the Nations Cup, set to be held in Malaysia and Poland respectively in May-June, with the long-term agreement to come into question only after the two events.

Dawn has learnt the PHF has sent Oltmans the contract and that the coach is studying it.

“If he accepts the terms and conditions the PHF will hire him for the two tournaments,” a PHF told Dawn.

The federation is looking to set up the national side’s training camp in Islamabad from April 15 for the two tournaments and is hoping Oltmans agrees upon taking the coaching role — an agreement of two months — before it starts.

The last time the PHF hired a foreign coach to work with the national side, it was Oltmans compatriot Siegfried Aikman in 2022-23. The experience was one to forget for the latter as the PHF failed to pay his monthly salaries for one year due to the body’s differences with the Pakistan Sports Board.

Aikman received his dues only after he walked away from the job following a bitter time in Pakistan.

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup: Pakistan beat Malaysia with last-minute winner

Pakistan defeated Malaysia 5-4 with a last-minute winner by Abu Mahmood in their Sultan Azlan Shah Cup match on Saturday in Ipoh, Perak.

The nine-goal thriller saw some of the best goals as the Green Shirts managed to emerge triumphant after a long 60 minutes.

The match began with Pakistan earning a penalty corner in the ninth minute which was converted by Sufyan Khan without much problems. However, Malaysia responded quickly and levelled the score with Abu Kamal Arzai scoring for the home side.

The first quarter ended 1-1 but Malaysia took the lead in the second quarter as Arzai scored for his once again. The third quarter was no different than the previous one as Arzai completed his hat-trick and put his side in the driving seat.

Malaysia were dominating the match and it looked difficult for Pakistan to break through their defense but they bounced back and scored two goals in quick sessions. Sufyan and Zikriya Hayat scored in the 50th and 53rd minute respectively.

Malaysia once again took the lead in the 56th minute with Marhan Jalil scoring for them and with just four minutes left in the conclusion of the match, it looked over for Pakistan to come back in the game.

But, once again, that was not the case as Pakistan continued to push for a goal and Sufyan once again found the back of the net and levelled the score in the 59th minute.

Seconds after Sufyan scored his third and Pakistan’s fourth, they earned a penalty corner which was converted by Abu Mahmood as Pakistan emerged victorious after a nail-biter.

Pakistan’s next match is now against Korea on Sunday at the same venue.

Pakistan come back to edge Canada, face Japan in Azlan Shah Cup final

Pakistan and Japan won their respective matches on Wednesday to qualify for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup final in Ipoh.

Both the teams top the table with 10 points each from four matches. The final will be staged on May 11 at the Azlan Shah Stadium.

Pakistan have registered three wins and a draw while Japan also have the same number of wins plus a draw.

On Wednesday, Pakistan defeated Canada 5-4 while Japan beat hosts Malaysia 2-1.

Malaysia and New Zealand are placed at third and fourth, respectively, with six points each.

South Korea have registered three points and are at five while Canada with no wins, are at bottom in the six-nation invitational event.

Continuing with their impressive comeback show in the event, Pakistan edged Canada.

The green-shirts, who clawed back from two goals down, to register a well-deserved win, now top the six-nation event with 10 points under their belt and face New Zealand in their last league match scheduled for Friday.

In earlier matches of the ongoing event, Pakistan worked their way back from 1-3 down against Malaysia before winning 5-4, and the same scenario existed against Japan in the 1-1 drawn match.

Sean Davies’ field goal in the fifth minute pushed the Canadians, 19th in the world rankings, ahead of Pakistan, ranked 15.

Forward Harbir Sidhu, with 25 caps under his belt, then added further gloss by scoring the second goal in the 17th minute giving Canada a solid looking 2-0 lead.

But Pakistan, the three-time former Sultan Azlan Shah Cup champions, made a superb comeback with two penalty corner goals within a space of two minutes, leaving Canadian goalkeeper Matthew Sarmento baffled.

Abu Bakr Mahmood struck back-to-back goals for Pakistan in the 28th and 29th minutes.

Arshad Liaquat extended Pakistan’s lead to 3-2 (36th), Ashraf Waheed Rana made it 4-2 (44th) and Ghazanfar Ali nailed the fifth (45th).

Canada’s Sean Davis made a field goal in the 45th minute, and Avijot Butter scored in another field attempt in the 50th that reduced the deficit to 5-4.

Except for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where Pakistan comfortably won 7-1 in a pool match, the record shows the contest between the two nations have always been close. In the last 14 meetings, Pakistan won 10 times, Canada three times that included claiming a 6-0 whitewash victory over the former world champions in the 2017 Hockey World League semi-finals in London, and drawn once.

Pakistan head coach Roelant Oltmans praised Canada.

“Let us give credit to Canada. They played a good game and gave us a hard time today. We were only able to come back in the second quarter after being 2-0 down. Although we led 5-3, the pressure was still on us. And we had so many chances to score and even had 11 penalty corners,” the Dutch coach said after the match.

“At this moment we have not thought of the last pool match against New Zealand on Friday,” he added.

Patrick Tshutshani, the Canadian coach, said the dedicated performance shown by his players delighted him.

Dutch visa delay puts hockey team’s preparations in jeopardy

Unnecessary delay in the issuance of Dutch visas may spoil Pakistan’s preparations for the Nations Challenge Hockey Cup starting in the city of Gniezno (Poland) on May 31.

Pakistan team has been booked to travel to Amsterdam (Holland) on May 20 but due to an unwarranted delay in the issuance of visas by the Dutch Embassy in Islamabad, the touring squad may not be in a position to travel today (Monday) to start training camp as scheduled.

“Yes, we have not been able to obtain Holland visas so far. Though, the embassy has promised to hasten up formalities, chances of getting the travelling documents ready by Monday look remote. In that case, we would not be in a position to start the training as per schedule (May 22) in Amsterdam,” a source within the touring squad, when contacted, said. The source claimed that efforts were on to secure visas in time before the team’s departure on Monday.

When it comes to touring European countries, the embassies in Pakistan have always been non-cooperative in the issuance of timely visas to leading Pakistan athletes, knowing well that the majority of hockey players usually play European leagues and there are tough measures in place for players and officials. At all cost, the team members will be back in time after completing Nations Challenge Cup in Poland following the training camp in Holland.

The worst part is that the spineless Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has absolutely no relations with embassies (despite offering its facilities many times to these embassies) to help the team out at this juncture.

Recently a lesser-known Dutch Hockey Club travelled to Pakistan for a series of matches. The hockey authorities and PSB extended all possible help to the tourists to make their trip comfortable and trouble-free. However, so far uncertainty prevails over Pakistan’s team’s timely departure for important camp training in Holland that also includes one-off Test against the host country’s national team.

Oltmans is already in Holland making final arrangements for the camp training. It was the team’s head coach who proposed a ten-day training to build up momentum for the Nations Challenge Cup starting on May 31.

In a recent talk with ‘The News’, Oltmans said that the cup is very important for Pakistan hockey prospective. “Winning the Nations Cup is all the more important from Pakistan’s perspective as the title will take the team into the FIH Pro League next season. I have proposed a ten-day training camp in Holland ahead of the Nations Cup to acclimatize well for the event.” Oltmans also shared the outcome of his talks with Dutch Hockey, revealing that the team has agreed to play against Pakistan in a one-off Test during a training session in Holland.

“It is a good development. I am trying to get more matches but at the moment one Test against the Dutch national team has been finalized.” The head coach termed France as the main challenge to Pakistan in a quest to win the cup.

“Besides other teams, France are expected to pose the main threat to the Pakistan team mainly because they are preparing for the Paris Olympics and have improved leaps and bounds in recent times as a team.” The federal government under special instructions of the prime minister has already released Rs59 million for the camp training in Holland and participation of the national squad in the Nations Cup.
