At this stage, I can honestly say that he would not score even with no opposition players or goalie.

Just 2 goals from 41 appearances is just dreadful. Am sure someone can pull up stats to show the number of shots he has had but it's not required.

I'd have liked Rashford to get more opportunities then him in this tournament but it wasn't to be.

Sterling has everything you want in an attacker except a good finish.

He just doesn't have a good shot on him - I remember how he'd fluff simple chances when he used to play for Liverpool.

I never rated him as a finisher to be honest, seems to miss chances in the most important games.

If I could describe how I feel about Sterling all you'd see is *'s cos he is just the worst player to put on an England shirt.

He's a winger and has mostly played RW for Man City. He can't play striker cos he has zero presence up top and only runs in behind, zero movement. Rubbish finishing and the hate I have for him is visceral.

BUT COME ON ENGLAND SEMI FINAL LETS GOOOO

His finishing is poor. But the rest of his play is really good. Pep has improved him a lot.

Sterlings quick n got good movement He makes some great runs too Its just sad he cant finish He adds a lot to the england team with his mentioned attributes and hence he must play

He had one of his better games today I thought, really stretched the Swedish defenders with his pace and he was getting a lot of attention sticking to him which allowed more space to open up on the wings for Young and Trippier. But it is somewhat difficult to see past that missed chance at the end of the first half, he received perfect service from Henderson for that one and should have buried the game with it to be honest. I am not sure that he has the mental strength to deliver the goods in a semi-final or a final.

I thought he was decent today and did a lot of unselfish running which helped his team-mates and created space for them.

I feel he cops a lot of unfair stick at times.

terrible finisher, i would have rashford over him every day.

Rashford should have been brought on earlier today.

But Sterling didnt have a bad game. He put in good effort and worked well with the midfield.

Should have scored a goal though. The game should have been over much earlier had Sterling slotted the ones most forwards would.

If Delle Ali didnt get the second goal and Sweden equalised, all that good effort by Sterling would have gone to waste because he blew 2 sitters.

The position he plays in for England, he should be scoring often, i get it he works well and makes decent runs, but when playing in that position you have too take the chances you get.

Yeah, I agree with you. But I am not convinced that we start with Rashford. But on situations like today, Rashford could have been brought on early in the 2nd half. For a while when Sweden were pressing, changing things up a bit might have helped.

He wreaked havoc through the Swedish defence today and forced a corner.

He's just got a mental problem finishing at this level. He's overthinking it.

He has pace to burn but stops then looks for a pass when he should keep running. This causes him to run in to traffic so the chance is gone. Get to the byline then cross it or just go yourself. No need to stop when most of opposing players are behind you.

Rashford has been pretty rubbish too in the chances Southgate has given him in this campaign, he didn't take the opportunity to replace Sterling.

There were plenty of chances for him to pass the ball to others in the box but he was very selfish and kept fluffing chances when he knows deep down he is a rubbish finisher, I think if he could stop being selfish we could utilize him better but old habbits die hard and he use to play for Scumpool [MENTION=43583]KingKhanWC[/MENTION]

He's done more than Sterling has this whole tournament. Yes he missed that 1 on 1 but so has Sterling vs Sweden. Sterling is an inferior striker to Rashford in so many aspects.

REALLY???

He has been given only 2 real chances this WC, first in a match that England didnt seem they wanted to win and second to take a penalty against Columbia that he slot away so cooly.

Croatia fear England's Sterling in World Cup semi

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic has identified Raheem Sterling as England's danger man in the World Cup semifinal on Wednesday.

Sterling was a key part of the Manchester City side that won the Premier League last season but he has been less effective in England's charge to the last four for the first time since 1990.

Despite some disappointing early performances, England coach Gareth Southgate has kept faith with the 23-year-old and his speed was a constant threat to Sweden's defence in England's 2-0 quarter-final win on Saturday.

"I think Raheem Sterling is an important player because he is fast and dangerous alongside Harry Kane," Dalic said in a press conference Sunday.

"I wouldn't say there are any glaring weaknesses (in England's team) since they are in the semifinals, that says it all.

"They play very direct football, dangerous, fast, and they are really good at setpieces, and dangerous at corner kicks."

England survived a penalty shootout against Colombia in the last 16 whereas Croatia emerged through extra-time and spot-kicks against Denmark before going through the same ordeal again against Russia in Saturday's quarterfinal.

After such tight matches, it is easy to forget that Croatia produced a feast of attacking play to destroy Lionel Messi's Argentina 3-0 in the group phase.

Dalic blamed Croatia's opponents for smothering the creative talents of Luka Modric and said he expected a more open match in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

"Our last three games were different because we played teams with a defensive approach," he said.

"But we are looking forward to a different style of game against England because they like to play attacking football."

The semifinal also represents a financial mismatch between the riches of England's Premier League and Croatian football.

"If we had England's money, who knows where we'd be in our country?" Dalic said.

To be fair to him his performances in this tournament have been pretty decent but the poor finishing overshadows the good work, they should stop trying to get him a goal and Raheem needs to put the team first as well if the moment presents itself in a crunch situation.

Sterling is awesome other than finishing

He should still start tomorrow, Rashford was very disappointing against Belgium.

England may be out of World Cup because of the injustice they committed against Sterling.

Thanks [MENTION=46929]shaz619[/MENTION] England took out Sterling as per your wishes and as a result they are now out of World Cup;

His best display of the tournament today, not sure why he was taken off so early.

Sterling answered his critics in the last couple of games, including me. We really missed him when he went off, Croatia were really struggling against him in the first half.

Ran out of gas after first half... looked threatening for first half hour then Croats found a way to shut him down

Should have stayed on for a bit longer. Rashford was awful when he came on anyway.

I specifically criticised his poor finishing and it was frustrating to see him miss many chances but beyond that he has been good

Raheem Sterling: Manchester City forward signs three-year contract extension

Raheem Sterling has signed a three-year contract extension at Manchester City, committing him to the club until 2023 in a deal worth up to £300,000 a week.

The 23-year-old England forward's previous deal at Etihad Stadium was due to expire at the end of next season.

It is understood the new contract will make Sterling one of the best-paid English players in the Premier League.

"I'm delighted to sign. My development here has been incredible," said Sterling.

"I felt from the minute I got here it was the right choice for me. It's paid off and I'm really grateful."

Sterling, who has scored seven goals for the club this season, joined City from Liverpool in a £49m deal in 2015.

He scored 23 goals last season as the Blues won the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

Capped 46 times by England, he scored twice against Spain last month - his first international goals for three years.

City director of football Txiki Begiristain said: "This is a significant moment for the club. Raheem has improved dramatically in the past two seasons and is now one of the Premier League's best attacking players. His statistics tell their own story.

"He's quick, strong and excellent in front of goal - everything a modern-day forward needs to excel."

The new deal comes in the week that German news magazine Der Spiegel alleged City overvalued sponsorship deals to help meet Uefa's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

City said they will not be commenting on the claims and that the attempt to damage their reputation had been "organised and clear".

Sterling on scoring, team-mates on the future

In an interview with the club's City TV, Sterling talked about aspects of his game.

Scoring: "With time and watching myself over on clips, I started to realise what I was doing in front of goal. I stopped rushing, took my time and started being more ruthless and not thinking about it too much and do what you do every day on the training pitch."

Team-mates: "It's a club where you are expected to challenge on all fronts, you know you are expected to win stuff. You enjoy that but at the same time it is a bit of pressure. Players like David [Silva] and Sergio [Aguero] have done it year in year out, not just for their club but for their countries."

Life at City: "It's massive, that's one of the reasons I came here - seeing the vision. Playing against City in the past the way they moved the ball then was scary. The vision the club gave me sold me straight away. How we've developed with Pep with and without the ball, it's always nice for attacking players to have as much possession as possible, It's been a real joy."

The future: "There's definitely a lot more (to come), there's stuff I'm still working on, there's never a time where I feel this is where it stops, I always want to get better and get my numbers up, score more goals and get more assists. If I'm producing and other players are producing that will only help the team."

He is actually a brilliant player for his club but like most other English players goes missing in internationals especially big tournaments.

He is actually a brilliant player for his club but like most other English players goes missing in internationals especially big tournaments.

Not many top players actually have great records for their country. It's a much bigger task to make players play the way they should for the national team when the manager only sees them from time to time and knows that the squad could change significantly in the build up to a tournament. Teams that tend to do well either have extremely talented depth (France) or the same golden generation that seems to play for years (Spain), mainly because they "bypass" these issue to a certain extent.

Y'all who don't rate him are clueless. Pep has taken him to the next level. He's learnt how to get into the right positions to score goals and he can beat most full backs 1 vs 1.

Brilliant footballer who I always knew would serve humble pie.

Quality player.
Quick, can dribble, great movement, always on the end of chances.
Has been hugely underrated for years. One of the biggest talents in English football for years.
The media witch-hunt against him has been a disgrace.

England forward Raheem Sterling will not play in the Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro on Thursday "as a result of a disturbance in a private team area", the Football Association has announced.

The Manchester City player, 24, was involved in an on-field argument with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, 22, during the Reds' 3-1 Premier League victory at Anfield on Sunday.

The Press Association reports the pair were again involved in an exchange on Monday.

"Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday's game were still raw," said England boss Gareth Southgate.

"One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we've been able to separate club rivalries from the national team.

"We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday. My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken.

"Now that the decision has been made with the agreement of the entire squad, it's important that we support the players and focus on Thursday night."

England play their 1,000th senior men's international on Thursday and a win at Wembley would book a spot at Euro 2020 with one qualifying game to spare.

The Three Lions are top of Euro 2020 Qualifying Group A, three points clear of the Czech Republic and four ahead of Kosovo with the top two nations advancing.

A win for Southgate's side will see them qualify, while a point will also be enough if the match between the Czech Republic and Kosovo also ends in a draw.

England then play their final group match away in Kosovo on Sunday.

Sterling, who joined Manchester City from Liverpool in 2015, has made 55 appearances for England, scoring 12 times, and netted in the 5-1 away win in Podgorica in March, while Gomez has featured seven times for the national side.

However, Gomez has struggled for first-team action for Liverpool this season and only started one Premier League match.

Sterling has started 11 of City's league matches in 2019-20 and has scored 14 times in 17 appearances in all competitions for his club, as well as scoring four times for England.

Forward Raheem Sterling admitted "emotions got the better of me" after being dropped for England's Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro following a clash with team-mate Joe Gomez.

The Football Association said Sterling had been dropped "as a result of a disturbance in a private team area".

The Manchester City player, 24, then took to social media to confirm "a five to 10 second thing" with Liverpool's Joe Gomez, 22, in the England camp.

Sterling and Gomez had an on-field argument during the Reds' 3-1 Premier League victory at Anfield on Sunday.

"Both Joe and I have had words and figured things out and moved on," Sterling said via his Instagram account on Tuesday.

"We are in a sport where emotions run high and I am man enough to admit when emotions got the better of me.

"This is why we play this sport because of our love for it - me and Joe Gomez are good, we both understand it was a five to 10 second thing... it's done, we move forward and not make this bigger than it is.

"Let's get focus on our game on Thursday," Sterling added.

England boss Gareth Southgate said on Monday: "Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday's game were still raw.

"One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we've been able to separate club rivalries from the national team.

England must 'lose the arrogance', says SouthgatePick your England all-time XIPlayers to wear 'legacy numbers' as part of 1,000th match celebrations

Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said the incident could have been "handled better".

In a post on Facebook, Ferdinand suggests Southgate "would no doubt have seen worse many times during his time as a player and manager".

"I just feel this could and should have been handled better to support the player and not hang him out to dry," he continued.

"One of our world-class players who has conducted himself wonderfully through racism and unwarranted criticism in an England shirt will now come under more scrutiny and be vilified in the media no doubt - when this could have been dealt with internally. Hindsight is a great thing though."

Analysis

BBC football correspondent John Murray

Today is a media day with England and I'm sure the long lenses will be focused on Sterling and Gomez. The big point in all of this is that during the time Gareth Southgate has been the England manager, team harmony has been one of the key things.

He has often told us how they have worked on defusing club rivalries, because it has been a problem with England in the past. Sterling will remain with the squad and one of the things Southgate said was that the emotions from Sunday's match were still raw and the decision to leave Sterling out has been made with the agreement of the entire squad.

Sterling has come on a storm in the last year or so, while his development has continued with Manchester City and England. He has scored 10 goals in his past 10 internationals and he did captain England when he won his 50th cap against the Netherlands in June.

Time will move on and we will always refer to this, but he is such an important player for England, I would go as far to say he is the first name on the team sheet. So I would not rule him out of captaining his country in the future.

England manager Gareth Southgate has compared his squad to "a family" in the aftermath of Raheem Sterling's confrontation with Joe Gomez, saying arguments are inevitable.

"I love all of my players. We are like a family. The important thing is for a family to communicate and work through problems," said Southgate.

"I don't expect as a manager to not have to deal with issues."

Sterling admitted "emotions got the better of me" during the incident.

"Me and Joe Gomez are good, we both understand it was a five to 10 second thing...it's done, we move forward," he added in a statement on social media earlier on Tuesday.

The Manchester City forward, who was involved in a previous altercation with Liverpool's Gomez in his side's 3-1 Premier League defeat on Sunday, has been dropped for England's Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro on Thursday.

Southgate confirmed that Sterling was the aggressor in the incident at the team hotel.

"Raheem in his [social media] post last night explained for a very brief moment his emotions ran over. It would be correct to say that's not the same for Joe," he added.

At a team meeting on Monday night, Southgate, Sterling and Gomez all spoke as the manager decided on the appropriate action to take.

"In the end I have to find the right solution for the group," added Southgate.

"That's a difficult line, you try to be fair when dealing with all players. I won't always get that right but I am the manager.

"Raheem is very important for us but I felt it was the right thing."

England are already assured of at least a play-off spot to make Euro 2020 after five wins from their opening six matches in their qualification campaign. They need just a point to qualify for the finals automatically.

Leicester defender Ben Chilwell said that Sterling and Gomez spoke at a team meeting on Monday, as well as Southgate.

"Gareth spoke about the situation and spoke about what he thought, and he also wanted to know what we thought about it," said Chilwell.

"Joe and Raheem got the chance to talk, which they both wanted to do. For Raheem, he wanted to apologise and Joe wanted to get stuff off his chest as well. That was it done then.

"[Sterling] was apologetic. He said it's not in his nature, which it's not. We all know as footballers that emotions can run high. There's no-one trying to make excuses for him, including himself.

"Gareth didn't want to make a decision himself, he was keen we came to the right decision with the leadership group. It got spoken about between the leadership group and Gareth. The decision has been made and we're all very on board with that.

"Since then it's not been spoken of. It got squashed yesterday [Monday]. We've moved on and trained as normal this morning."

Raheem Sterling 'tried to get Joe Gomez in headlock' as fresh details of clash emerge

Raheem Sterling attempted to get Joe Gomez in a headlock as they clashed in the England canteen, according to new reports.

Gareth Southgate has axed Manchester City forward Sterling from the Three Lions' Euro 2020 qualifier with Montenegro as a result of the bust-up.

The incident occurred on Monday when Liverpool centre-back Gomez was in the canteen greeting his international team-mates.

Gomez spotted Sterling sitting down and walked over to him to say hello.

Sterling responded with the comment: "So you think you're the big man?", which sparked laughter from the other players - including Gomes.

The players thought the 24-year-old was joking, but things took a sudden turn.

According to The Athletic, Sterling got to his feet and attempted to get Gomez in a headlock, knocking food over on the table in the process.

A source told the publication: "It was a pretty full-on thing and food went everywhere. Sterling behaved like a bit of a child."

England boss Southgate spoke to the press on Tuesday, where he confirmed Sterling let his emotions get the better of him.

"We have taken the decision to not consider Raheem for the match against Montenegro on Thursday.

"One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we've been able to separate club rivalries from the national team. Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday's game were still raw.

What an insecure tweet!

Poor from Sterling. He's lucky he's a gifted footballer. If he wasn't he wouldn't get away with all this thuggery. If he wasn't a footballer at all I would be worried for his well-being.

England full-back Danny Rose said he never realised how much Liverpool fans "dislike" Raheem Sterling until he watched the forward return to Anfield with Manchester City on Sunday.

Rose said it was the first time he "sat back and took note", as the forward who left Liverpool for City in a £49m move in 2015 was jeered by Reds fans.

Sterling then clashed with Liverpool's Joe Gomez when the pair reported for England duty on Monday.

He has since been dropped by England.

"It's probably the first time I have sat back and actually realised and took note of how much the Liverpool fans dislike him," Rose told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I take that for granted whenever I'm watching Raheem. I think he just gets on with it and maybe it had a part to play in whatever happened."

Following the incident at England's base at St George's Park, the City forward admitted "emotions got the better of me", while insisting his relationship with Gomez was "good" - something echoed by Tottenham defender Rose.

However, England boss Gareth Southgate opted to leave Sterling, 24, out of Thursday's Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley.

"We have moved on," Rose said. "You know the media and everyone will have their fun today and tomorrow.

"But I hope it can be put to bed as soon as possible because obviously Joe is - and I'm not just saying this - one of the nicest people I have come across in football.

"He won't want this to fester and Raheem won't want this to fester."

Both players have since addressed the rest of the squad to apologise for the incident, and Rose said he could sense Sterling's apology "was from the heart".

"You could sense that and you could hear that," added Rose.

"Joe spoke afterwards and we were all proud of what they said. We are just happy that everyone has woken up in a better mood this morning."

Asked whether it was possible to set aside club rivalries on international duty, Rose insisted it was, saying they were "friendships and relationships forged throughout the years", and citing his own relationship with Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, players formerly at Spurs' north London rivals Arsenal.

"Obviously I'd like to think that everybody knows if I ever played against them, then my will to win for my team will always override any friendships or relationships, but when I come here for England it is all put to one side," he said.

England need just a point against Montenegro to qualify for Euro 2020 in their 1,000th match, and manager Gareth Southgate has compared his squad to "a family" in the aftermath of Sterling's confrontation with Gomez.

"I love all of my players. We are like a family. The important thing is for a family to communicate and work through problems," said Southgate.

^ Sterling has been to Anfield many times with City. Liverpool fans have no love for this man because of the way he left the club. He will get it even worse on the next occasion. lol

Under pressure in big games, he is a poor player in a great team.

Not jut the way he left. Enough time had past that it wasn't as relevant anymore. But he reopened the wounds by singing about Liverpool fans being "battered on the streets".

But yea as a 19 year old he did drag the club through mud. No one has ever done that before. Torres, Owen, Macca etc.

The last man to try and drag the club through mud like that was Diouf and there's no love lost there either.

Likes of Danny Rose and Trevor Sinclair trying to shift the blame are lying through their teeth. He should tell us how Spurs fans treated Sol Campbell but I didn't see Sol clawing at people's faces while on England duty

Sterling-Gomez clash: Gareth Southgate says forward may not be 'hugely enthusiastic' about him

England manager Gareth Southgate says he "wouldn't imagine" that forward Raheem Sterling is "hugely enthusiastic" about him at the moment.

Sterling was dropped by Southgate for Thursday's Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro after a clash with team-mate Joe Gomez at England's training camp.

But Harry Maguire feels the squad has "moved on" from the incident on Monday.

"Joe and Raheem are talking now," said the Manchester United defender. "It's good for the team to move on."

Manchester City forward Sterling has stayed with the squad and the 24-year-old will be available for Sunday's qualifier in Kosovo.

At a news conference on Wednesday, Southgate said: "I wouldn't imagine that he's hugely enthusiastic - but I can understand that.

"He's with the group, that's the most important thing. He's a massive part of what we do - has been, will be.

"He's with us for the game tomorrow, he's back with the team on the training pitch enjoying his football. [He] trained superbly well, as he always does.

"So for me, the thing is finished."

Sterling and defender Gomez, 22, had an on-field argument during Liverpool's 3-1 win over Premier League title rivals City on Sunday - a day before the England squad linked up - but Maguire said there are "definitely no cliques" between players from rival clubs.

"Everybody mixes," said the 26-year-old centre-back. "We all share tables and share jokes and laughs together.

"You've seen how good the unity in the squad is over the past couple of years. The group has grown together. We continue to keep on growing and that's really important.

"We've moved on since Monday and we've trained hard, fully focused on the game, because it's a big game. We want to qualify for the Euros."

England need just a point against Montenegro at Wembley on Thursday (19:45 GMT) to qualify for Euro 2020 in their 1,000th match.

Many of Southgate's players faced each other in last season's Champions League final, as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 just five days before England's Nations League semi-final defeat by the Netherlands.

The England boss added: "When you're involved in high-emotion games it really challenges everybody's feelings and it is a very difficult situation for everyone to come back immediately together. We had that with the Champions League final in a different way.

"Because we have so many of our players - nearly all - playing in England, it's inevitable that we're going to have those games and those rivalries.

"But the players are very, very close and that's been the case right the way through the rest of the week. I don't see that changing because they're too tight for that not to be the case.

"What I saw on the training ground over the past couple of days, there was full focus on the game, with everybody very together, laughing, enjoying their football again. That's where all of us want to be."

England fans wrong to boo Joe Gomez, says Raheem Sterling

England forward Raheem Sterling says it was wrong for fans to boo Joe Gomez when he came on as a substitute in Thursday's 7-0 Euro 2020 qualifier win against Montenegro at Wembley.

Manchester City's Sterling was dropped for the game after he clashed with Liverpool defender Gomez on Monday.

Sterling was seen applauding Gomez when he came on to the sound of jeers.

"It was hard for me to see my team-mate get booed for something that was my fault," Sterling tweeted.

"Joe hasn't done anything wrong and for me to see someone who keeps his head down and works hard, especially after a difficult week for him, to be booed when he came on tonight was wrong.

"I've taken full responsibility and accepted the consequence."

'No England player should be booed like that'
The altercation between Sterling and Gomez happened at the England camp one day after the pair were involved in an on-field argument during Liverpool's 3-1 Premier League victory over Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

Sterling has since apologised for his actions and England boss Gareth Southgate confirmed he will start Sunday's final Euro 2020 qualifier in Kosovo.

Southgate said he was sad to see the reaction to Gomez's introduction in the second half against Montenegro.

"I am hugely disappointed for Joe," he said.

"Joe had done nothing wrong and no England player should be booed like that when they are wearing the shirt.

"All the players are particularly disappointed with that."

What kind of thread is this?! Having said that comes to no surprise who started this.

Sterling is England's best player and he could easily be playing for Real Madrid right now.

Gareth Southgate went to seek out Joe Gomez after England victory

Gareth Southgate personally went to speak to Joe Gomez and his family to offer extra support at Wembley after he was loudly booed by some supporters, Sky Sports News understands.

Gomez was left devastated by the crowd reaction when he came on for Mason Mount in the 70th minute against Montenegro on Thursday, Sky Sports News has been told, with team-mates also rallying round him in the dressing room after the game.

At first, it was not clear in the stadium whether fans were targetting the Liverpool defender himself or the England manager for his decision to replace an attacking midfielder with Gomez when England were already 6-0 up.

But the boos continued when Gomez initially touched the ball, leaving the 22-year-old in no doubt that he was being targeted for his part in the bust-up with team-mate Raheem Sterling at St George's Park on Monday.

Gomez is an extremely popular figure inside the England dressing room, and Sky Sports News understands there is widespread bemusement among his international team-mates about why the crowd reacted to him in the way they did.

Gomez was amongst the first England players to leave the changing room after the game, and walked through the mixed zone alongside a senior member of England's media team.

Sterling himself tweeted after the game, appealing for the England fans to stop the abuse, making it clear that Gomez was entirely blameless in the spat that left him with a scratch under his eye.

Southgate too praised Gomez's reaction to the provocation from Sterling, saying he had shown admirable restraint and professionalism.

Southgate has indicated Sterling will start the game against Kosovo in Pristina on Sunday night, after he was dropped at Wembley as punishment, as England's 7-0 victory secure their place at the Euro 2020 finals.

It is thought a number of senior England players are now keen for Gomez to also be given a starting place, to reinforce the image of squad unity, and help the Liverpool man get over one of the most difficult weeks in his career.

'All it takes is two or three people to start to boo and it spreads very quickly'

Former England defender Danny Mills believes "fierce" club rivalries are to blame for Gomez getting booed by sections of the Wembley crowd.

He told Sky Sports News: "As England, when you come together, it would be ideal if everyone was behind the team and backed them constantly. But we don't live in a perfect world - that is never ever going to happen.

"The club rivalries are fierce. They are huge. They are intense and all it takes is two or three people to start to boo and it spreads very, very quickly.

"All of a sudden [people think] 'We can do it. It's acceptable'. Then all of a sudden you get two hundred or a thousand people booing, and in a game like that where the game is very, very quiet you are going to hear it - and that is what happens.

"If you go back, John Terry has been booed when he has incidents in the past, David Beckham has been booed and had effigies of him being burnt as well.

"I was there when Ashley Cole got his 100th cap and sections of the crowd booed Ashley Cole. A hundred caps for England and people still thought it was acceptable to boo him because clearly they weren't Ashley Cole fans.

"This is not the first time, it's not an isolated case and I guarantee at some point in the future it will happen again."

Awesome player is Rahim! Just imagine him in the current Liverpool side with our already dazzling front three running circles around all opposition. He seems desperate to score against Liverpool often trying to hard that gets him in to trouble. The whole episode has been blown out of proportion by the media it seems, Rahim's behaviour towards Gomez did not help either getting aggressive on the L'pool defender for no reason. Don't see why Gomez was booed when he did nothing wrong at all.

Manchester City have opened talks with forward Raheem Sterling about a new long-term contract.

Sterling, 24, signed a deal in November 2018 that runs to 2023 but City are keen to secure his future.

It is understood any new contract would see him become one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League.

He won the 2018-19 Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award and has been praised for his public stance on racism in society.

A Manchester City fan has been banned from football matches for five years for racially abusing Raheem Sterling.

Ian Baldry, 58, from Bradford, has also been sentenced to 200 hours community service after he admitted using racist language while celebrating a Sterling goal against Bournemouth in December 2018.

Baldry told Manchester Magistrates' Court he had been excited and since regretted using the language.

Sterling did not hear the comment at the time, although it was heard by a number of supporters, the court was told.

On Thursday, Italian police handed a five-year football banning order to a 38-year-old who was found guilty of initiating racist chants towards Mario Balotelli in a Serie A game between Hellas Verona and Brescia in November.

Raheem Sterling says Real Madrid are a "fantastic club" but insists he is "really happy" at Manchester City.

Sterling, 25, has been linked with a move to Real following City's two-year ban from European competition.

"Right now I'm at City and I'm really happy. But I say Real Madrid are a fantastic club," Sterling told Spanish outlet AS.

"When you see the white shirt you know exactly what the club stands for, it's massive."

The England international added: "But at the same time, I have a contract with City now and I have to respect this. But it's a fantastic club."

City play Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, with the first leg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday and the return game at Etihad Stadium on 17 March.

The Spanish giants have lifted the trophy on a record 13 occasions, including three in successive seasons under Zinedine Zidane between 2016 and 2018.

"I think to win the Champions League so many times especially in a row as well is very difficult," Sterling said of Zidane, who left Real shortly after that third win in 2018 before returning for a second spell at the Bernabeu in March.

"I don't think that's luck, it's definitely a formula. Some people have that winning mentality and he wins by any means.

"I'd say it's something he has probably developed over his great career as a player and he's developing his career as a manager so it continues this winning touch."

Raheem Sterling will be tested for coronavirus before joining England's bio-secure bubble after attending a party with Usain Bolt, who is now self-isolating.

Raheem Sterling launches charity foundation to help disadvantaged youngsters

Manchester City and England forward Raheem Sterling will launch a foundation aimed at helping disadvantaged young people which will include providing university scholarships and work placements.

The 25-year-old said he wanted to create something "humongous" for the people he was helping with the organisation which would focus on social mobility.

The England international's charitable body would help those supported by Marcus Rashford and his food poverty activism.

Sterling recently also spoke out about the issue of online abuse, and questioned the will of social media companies to tackle the amount of hateful messages footballers received.

Speaking to the Sunday Times magazine, Sterling said: "That's me finished with the 'what can happen, what should happen'. Now I'm trying to put into place stuff I can do myself.

"Stuff to give young people in the same circumstances I was in another shot. If there is a university they want to go to, football equipment they need, other things. I want to be a helping hand.

"I'm not really fussed about having this million and that million. What will make me happy is seeing I am able to help. Even if it's five people, even if it's one, at least I have helped someone come out of their bubble and experienced that there is something better to England."

The Sunday Times reported Sterling was still working on the finer details of the foundation, but that his contribution was likely to be seven figures and he has asked his club and his main sponsors to match his financial commitment.

He said: "It comes down to, OK, I come from northwest London, I move out of my area - what good is it if I take all I have made in life, my success and just build a big house somewhere? I'm happy, cool, but that's not who I am."

Sterling helps inspire the FA's new Leadership Diversity Code

Raheem Sterling's passionate calls for football to address the lack of black representation in positions of power have helped inspire the launch of the FA's new Football Leadership Diversity Code, with over 40 clubs pledging to introduce hiring targets.

The teams, including 19 of the 20 Premier League sides - Southampton the only one not to join - and a selection from the EFL, WSL and Women's Championship, as well as England, have signed up to the voluntary code, committing to tackle inequality across senior leadership positions, broader team operations and coaching roles.

The Code aims to increase accountability and transparency, as well as moving away from recruitment practices which are focused on personal networks.

Sterling is a small guy but his development in the last few seasons has been BIG!

One of the main men at City now, with Aguero constantly injured and David Silva gone, I'd personally rank him as City's second best player only behind DeBruyne.

Sterling has added the knack of being in the right spot at the right time and this has helped him tot up his goals tally taking his game to the next level.

His start to this season has been a bit slow by his own high standards but I don't think it will be long before he gets back to firing on all cylinders.

Having DeBruyne back after injury should help in this regard and still only 25, he's currently rated as the second most valuable footballer after Mbappe.

Ever since Grealish came, Sterling has been spending a lot of time on the bench. Sterling > Grealish, I haven't seen Greliash do much of his special dribbles ever since he came to Man City.

Looks a fringe player at the moment.

I wonder how soon his patience will run out.

Raheem Sterling says he would consider leaving Manchester City and moving abroad.

Speaking at the FT Business of Sport US summit Sterling, quoted in the FT, said: "If there was an opportunity to go somewhere else, I'd be open to it at this moment in time.

"As an English player all I know is the Premier League and I've always thought: 'You know, maybe one day I'd love to play abroad and see how I would come up against that challenge.'"

Even last season, he was made to sit on the bench a lot. He's too good a player to be ostracised like this. For all his greatness, Pep certainly knows how waste some really good players.

Sterling should definitely look to move elsewhere, be it abroad or home.

I would love Raheem back at Anfield. Have a feeling that he will move to Newcastle next.

Well done to Raheem but that was a ridiculously poor penalty decision. Very harsh on Wolves.

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling this summer.

That’s according to the Telegraph, who say the Gunners will ‘explore’ a move for the England star as he enters the final year of his Man City contract.

Raheem Sterling: Man City forward attracting interest from Bayern Munich and La Liga

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling is attracting interest from Bayern Munich and leading clubs in Spain amid uncertainty over his future.

Sterling, 27, won his fourth Premier League title with City this season.

But he started the final-day win over Aston Villa on the bench, in addition to both legs of the Champions League semi-final defeat by Real Madrid.

With just one year left on his contract, Sterling now has a major decision to make about his future.

City have already signed two forwards ahead of the new campaign, Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and Argentine Julian Alvarez from River Plate, and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has stated the club expect to sign at least two more players this summer.

It is understood Sterling's situation is likely to be addressed in the middle of June, once his international commitments with England in the Nations League are over.

Sterling has no interest in becoming a bit-part player and retains the desire to improve and play a meaningful role in winning more honours.

He also knows playing regularly is the best way of ensuring he retains his England place for November's World Cup in Qatar.

City are likely to sell at least one forward player, with Brazilian Gabriel Jesus heavily linked with Arsenal in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Poland striker Robert Lewandowski has said his "story is over" at Bayern Munich as the 33-year-old seeks a move from the German champions this summer.

Sterling shouldn't hesitate and should just move. He has his critics but he's too good a player to be sat wasting his prime years warming the bench.

He also needs to think about keeping his England place, which if he is not getting game time he will soon struggle to do.

Chelsea interested in City star Sterling (The Telegraph)

Chelsea are the latest club to have expressed interest in Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling, reports The Telegraph.

The England international continues to see his future at the Etihad Stadium called into question, as he enters the final year of his contract, and those at Stamford Bridge are keeping a close eye on his situation.

Chelsea are targeting Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling as their major summer signing.

Sterling's Manchester City future is in doubt as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

The England forward, 27, has attracted interest from major clubs overseas but Chelsea believe they can persuade him to remain in the Premier League.

The Blues have the obvious attraction of being in the Champions League for the London-born player.

Sterling scored 13 goals in 30 Premier League appearances as he won his fourth title last term.

However, he was on the bench for both legs of the Champions League semi-final defeat by Real Madrid and the epic final game of the season against Aston Villa.

Sterling did spark that memorable last-day comeback by setting up Ilkay Gundogan's crucial first goal as Pep Guardiola's side came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and pip Liverpool to the Premier League.

Raheem Sterling managing talks over his future, Chelsea waiting on Romelu Lukaku exit before acting on interest

Raheem Sterling is managing talks over his future, but no decision has been made yet, with Chelsea expected to act on their interest once Romelu Lukaku's loan to Inter Milan has been completed.

The England international enters the final year of his contract at the Etihad, and at 27, is carefully considering what he believes is the defining stage of his career.

Chelsea have yet to open any formal dialogue with Sterling, who is one of their primary targets.

The club are holding out for 10m euros as a loan fee for Lukaku and want Inter to pay his wages. The Italian club have so far increased their offer from 5m euros to 7m euros plus add-ons.

Sterling feels he hasn't reached his ceiling and can still elevate his game, which can only be achieved if he is viewed as a decisive contributor in the starting XI - especially in the context of the biggest matches.

That status has receded at City, but deep mutual respect remains between the player and the club. He has respectfully asked for time to fully assess what kind of role he holds in Pep Guardiola's plans moving forward.

Sterling is desperate to make a significant contribution wherever he plays and has been honest that he does not want a bit-part function and thrives on being given responsibility on and off the pitch.

Talks with City have been very professional, and cordial and it is understood that the club will not stand in his way if he chooses to move on and they receive an appropriate fee.

Thomas Tuchel is an admirer of Sterling, who represents an upgrade on many of his current options in the final third and possesses tactical dexterity.

Sterling could cure Chelsea's scoring issues, having posted double figures in the Premier League in each of his last five seasons. He has proven to be a creative force too, first at Liverpool and then City, directly contributing a combined 165 goals in the division in 320 appearances for both.

Chelsea are not alone in monitoring Sterling with Real Madrid and Barcelona checking on his situation. Bayern Munich had considered him as an alternative to Sadio Mane with Julian Nagelsmann publicly declaring his appreciation of the multi-functional forward previously.

Chelsea are using the Senegal international's £35.1m switch from Liverpool to the Allianz Arena as a guide for Sterling's potential fee but City will demand more - upwards of £50m - as he is much younger than Mane and an intra-league premium to a rival will apply.

A compromise of around £45m has been loosely floated should Chelsea solidify their pursuit.

Sterling will not ponder any potential transfer until formal talks occur and he has a handle on what guarantees he will have from a football perspective.

It is a fundamental reason he is conducting all meetings himself. Sterling does not want to exit a winning machine like City in search of greater minutes and significance only to sit on the bench elsewhere.

The four-time title winner is certain he can be a crucial cog for a club in lifting more silverware moving forward and is keen on helping to develop younger players.

Chelsea are also considering Ousmane Dembele and Christopher Nkunku, with other options seemingly out of reach. Robert Lewandowski is set to join Barcelona while Arsenal are "cautiously optimistic" of signing Gabriel Jesus from City.

According to the Independent, Chelsea are down to the final details of a £45m move for the Manchester City attacker, with Sterling expected to go on the pre-season tour to the United States.

The story adds that the 27-year-old is comfortable with the terms and is excited about a move back to London with the club.

Raheem Sterling has confirmed his Manchester City departure and said he was leaving the club as "a man".

The 27-year-old's £50m move to Premier League rivals Chelsea is expected in the next 24 hours.

The England forward issued a heartfelt goodbye message to his former team-mates and the club's staff and fans on his social media account.

"I arrived in Manchester a 20-year-old. Today, I leave as a man," said Sterling.

"Seven seasons, 11 major trophies, a lifetime of memories."

City signed Sterling from Liverpool in a £49m deal in 2015. He went on to score 131 goals in 339 games, winning four Premier League titles.

Capped 77 times by England, Sterling will become Chelsea's first major signing since the Todd Boehly-led takeover.

He added: "I am thankful for the ups and downs, as it's the downs that have tested my strength and resolve and enable me to stand here in front of you as the best possible version of myself."

Sterling will now link up with the Chelsea squad who flew out for their pre-season tour to the United States on Saturday.

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of England forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City in a £50m deal.

The deal is worth £47.5m initially and up to £50m with add-ons and bonuses.

7 seasons at Man City.

He served them well and I guess he felt it was time to move on. A big pay deal also an incentive probably.
