I've always wanted to know why he does not act in Hindi movies? Theres a whole audience of people who watch Bollywood movies and its highly likely that most of them have not even seen one movie of his and are missing out on watching a talented actor onscreen.

I know he made some when his popularity wasn't on the same level as now and that was a while ago. Is there any chance we could see him soon in a Hindi movie? Maybe Indian Pper's could shed some light?

rajnikanth.jpg

The truth is he isn't a very good actor and only south indian audiences fall for his numerous cheesy gimmicks that made him popular in the first place.

Not really , most of his Hindi movies as solo hero got bombed.
Its been nearly 20 yrs since he was given lead role in Hindi movie.
He's at his best doing Tamil movies where he has massive budget at his disposal. Rumor are going around that Katrina Kaif might be his new leading lady.
My favourite Rajnikanth hindi movie was "Geraftaar". Where he outshines both Kamal Hassan and Amitabh Bachchan despite much shorter role.
He will probably make rare cameos appearance like in Bulandi and RA-One.

Some valid points are made by other posters.

In past he made some Bollywood movies but was not successful.

The reason I see is the different kind of audience in bollywood and south industry.

South movies are always been larger than life (especially Rajni sir movies). Bollywood also sells fantasy but Rajni movies are much more difficult to shallow sometimes.

Also, a lot of his movies run due to fan base and not always due to content. A similar content and storyline of other actor may not get same response as Rajni's. Like you see Salman movies in Bollywood. e.g. Dabangg wouldn't be a hit if it was anyone else than Salman.

In Bangalore I have seen, a lot of my colleagues, they just wait for Rajni movies to get release. They do not care about the movie, but for them it's Rajni which matters. :)

People who say he cant act have never seen his movies in 70's,80's and even some in 90's..its just that later on after a movie called "Basha" he has too much image for an actor..and keeps doing what his gazillion fans like.....still Kamal Haasan is leagues ahead as an actor

For me, his gimmicks simply add to his persona.

I love watching Rajinikanth movies; over SRK et al.

I watched Sivaji recently. Great entertainment!

(He was pretty sound in Hum too)

True..Its just fun. Its stupid when people get all serious and ridicule for his gimmicks in an attempt to show they are intelligent and watch "Intelligent" Cinema...

He was good in Chaalbaaz as well...(Sridevi stole the show though)

And many people actually like him for his completely different persona offscreen...very humble..never shy to show how he truely looks like..and great sense of humour..and does numerous charity works.

Must Watch

True,

I would watch Shivaji, Robot etc etc any day over SRK movies.

People who like cheesy stuff like him, i dont....

For that matter everything South Indian seems to be cheesy with exaggerated expression be i songs, movies or dance.

very true. But what was the movie where sri devi was mentally retarded girl (kamal hasan was the hero)? Oh my god, that movie was so good!

Original Movie is called Moondram Pirai (Tamil), Vasantha Kokila(Telugu). And then a year later they remade the movie in Hindi as well..Called Sadma. Leading actors the same in all the three...

One of my all Time fav movies...Sridevi as a mentally retarded dominates Kamal throughout out the movie only for kamal to steal it in the last 10 min. Heart breaking..

Huge misconception!!!!!!!! South Indian Cinema makes more real movies than bollywood can ever imagine..only if you follow Tamil and Malayalam Industry...and Handfull Telugu movies. They are as good as hindi..infact in terms of film making..leagues ahead...India's finest directors Ramgopal Varma,Maniratnam ,balachandran Music directors like Rahman, Ilayaraja..cinematographers like Ravi K chandran...all are from south...even Sridevi,Rekha,Hemamilini!!!...and India's best actors Kamal haasan and Mohanlal are from south. Kamal Haasan's Movie called "Nayagan" (Leader) is in the top 100 films ever made in the world listed by TIMES.....one of the best gangster movies in the world

It is a stereotype that South Indian's movies are cheesy which are like over the top movies like Salman's movies now....we do have plenty..but we have as many awesome films as well...but as far as real film making and talent is considered in India....Malayalam,Tamil,Hindi,Telugu is the order...

You guys don’t know how many times I struggled to imitate his signature cigarette move, coupled with the finesse of his sunglasses move, woefully might I add. In my days of youth I would try to impress my mates when out clubbing – each and every attempt ended in disaster.

For me, the sheer fact I was trying to mimick an actor was (and is) a testament to how much of an influence an actor has had on me. Rajinikanth over all and Amitabh in Namak Halaal. Till this day I mimic Amitabh’s moves to Ke Pag Ghunghroo when clubbing! People laugh, but to hell with them, dance like no one is watching you!

:)

^^ I try to imitate his "laka laka laka laka" dialogue from chandramukhi. My 2 year old just laughs like crazy.

Growing up for me Rajnikanth meant basha...and then Muthu and Padayappa....I actually pity people who cannot enjoy rajnikanth ...:D

from 0:36 !! Style...

There is definitely something about Rajinikanth. As far as I am concerned he connects with the soul; you never tire of him. Yet one sniff of SRK's - King of Bollywood's jelly lips - and it's all over!

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/O8ZCkgjoTec" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Watch the song fully...has many funny iconic rajni stunts....Hillarious!!!! and he pulls them of with so much style....LEGEND!!!!

Ranjikanth is popular in Pakistan (I guess in Karachi) among the older (50+ crowd).

Perfectly said . Bollywood is very very overrated ..:19:

Please that movie Nayagan was a rehash of the first 2 godfather movies. Not a patch on the original anyway.

Please go and watch Kamal Hassan's interview itself where he himself says that it was based on Godfather with an Indian premise.

You are saying its a remake..how can somebody's life story be a remake. I have listened kamal say they researched on Varadarajan...even wiki mentions its based on varadarajan. May be there is some inspiration as far as taking and some scenes are considered....I dont think Times magazine is that stupid to include godfather and then include nayagan as well if the later is a rehash.

The similarties are uncanny, expect Indians to master the art of forgery

So basically, the video takes some similar scenes and puts it together. I definitely wont deny godfather influence in gangster movies...and some scenes are inspired as I have said in the previous post...but the movie itself is not a rehash of godfather as you said...the video basically takes some similar scenes and puts it together...Once again...There are countless movies which "inspired" from Godfather...and similar scenes here and there does not mean its a copy especially if the genre is the same...if the movie is a rehash..times would not definately not put Nayagan in the list..I am sure they saw some originality , taking and acting and stuff....Watch Nayagan..you will find a few similaries...but then few similaries can be found in many movies....does not mean its a rehash...

To succeed in Bollywood, you need to have a certain look. That is, you have to look almost like a white Caucasian with Indian touch. If you do not possess that, you have to be a Punjabi :))

Actors from South cannot succeed in Bollywood as most do not possess those looks. Even if someone from south do have those fair skin Caucasian looks, the stigma of being from south will always haunt them. This only applies to Heroes. For Heroines, it does not matter. Bollywood audience do not care which part of the country the leading lady comes from as long as the girl is good looking.

Also, the masala that works in South Film industry will not work in Bollywood. In South movies, the heroes are always elevated to such an extent that one would think if this hero can kill superman with bare hands. Heroes can do weird stunts which defy all logic and get away with it. Worst thing is, the front benchers in the theaters love those stupid stunts. Those are the people the producers of the movie target. A few stupid stunts and a couple of Item songs is what they look for.

In Bollywood, you do not see such idiotic stunts, but you see pathetic comedy interlaced with melodious music where the chocolate boy hero dances with a milky white heroine with a few blonde models in the background. The typical South Actor's image will never fit into such roles.

There is one thing in common with all Indian movies though. Most directors or story writers do not waste time in trying to be innovative with the story. They producers of the movie want the movie to be done in 2 or 3 months. So the writers either copy the story from some Hollywood flick or just give a new twist to an existing story. Audience are dumb. Most do not care about the story. They only look for some sex scenes which the heroine or some item girl will provide. :asif
If the producer is ready to invest 5 crores, he expects the film to make 6 crores with 1 crore profit. A quick buck in less than 6 months time. Better than putting your money in Share Market :D

Bottom line, Indian audience do not care about the quality. Even though most films are flop, the producers make their money in the opening 10 days or they at least break even.

RA-ONE, Krish? :ahmed

Like Bollywood has one salman khan, south has a quite a few who do some crazy stunts , but there as many normal realistic movies..actually more real than bollywood..

RA-ONE, Krish? :ahmed

They are superhero movies...

In South an ordinary guy can jump over buildings, throw cars and vans in the air like they are toys and can kick 100 goons with bare hands... These days, they don't even have to kick the goons.. All the hero has to do is brush his mustache or slap his thigh or just make eye contact and the villian will fly in their air like he has been hit by a tornado :))

agreed to what you stated .the recent trend in south indian movies have been like you mentioned above...but acting wise i would say south indian stars are miles ahead all the Khans and rest of them...and in the mid 80's tolate 90's south indian movies were much more realistic than bollywood movies and like i said have better actors...there have hell lot of south indian movies remade into Hindi but not many hindi movies to Tamil Telugu etc etc

Rajnikanth pera keta udane PakPassion chumma adhirudhulla! ;-)

About SSRK not appearing in Bollywood movies, not a big deal. Tamil movies are his bread and butter. We, in the south love the guy! Love his movies, love his personality, love his humility and love his charity. We dont want to lose him to Bollywood in a sense.

Now, as to why we love him as much as we do, cant really answer that. You needed to have grown up watching the man, his movies. Its hard to quantify what exactly endears him/his movies, but its fair to say that he is one of the most revered man in South India.

Out of the 3 khans, only Amir Khan is a good actor. He justifies his role all the time.

Sharukh overacts and his stammering gets irritating after a while. He acts cheesy too...

Salman is the worst actor of all the 3 khans and he cannot act to save his life. He cannot even dance. He is very stiff. To cover up his shortcomings as an actor, he tries to do comedy in almost all his scenes or just takes his shirt off :asif

I agree that South Actors are a lot better in terms of acting than the Bollywood actors.

he is just an average actor but in the past 5 years his popularity enormously increased all over India due to the high budget films and the Rajni jokes. His choice of movies is also pretty good.

Talkin abt kamal i believe Akali rajyam(telugu) [Varumayin Niram Sivappu in tamil] is his best film along with Nayagan which is not bad at all.......

Enthiran(Robot) >>>>Ra one

Hmm. i guess he does! I remember one hindi movie of his with amitabh when i was in school he was smart looking I guess now he is so damn old he is getting ugly and he should retire.. i have seen just 2 movies of him recently with sub titles and found him to be entertaining prefer him over the some plastic actors in bollywood ..

I don't see why he should act in Hindi movies!! does amithab act in tamil or any other langauge movies... everyone is comfortable in thier zones and make money and fame. He has acted in some top hindi movies with amitabh etc... But he preferred tamil.. Niether of which is his mother tongue anyway..

From the youtube clips I've seen of him he belongs in magic shows rather than movies. He puts Chuck Norris to shame

It is not looks for which He is getting fans. He have a strong fan following in Tamilnadu,Andhra and Mysore and overseas. even if He looks black or ugly isn't a matter. most south Indians and north Indians are dark and many will look like Rajnikanth.

In Tamilnadu, He is not seen as what other Indians think about Rajnikanth. see his Tamil movies and His "Heroism", "Style" etc from 80s to 2000s captured Tamil audience who will rather see more "expressive" heroes with "punch dialouges" and a 5ft3in guy fighting mukesh rishi. it is too complex. same with other mass heroes of tamil movie industry. "thala ajith", "vijay" all have such die hard fans and fan clubs(rowdy gangs).

Tamils always respected movie heroes as real life Heroes. that's the common psyche in Tamilnadu was and is. be it MGR(giyf) or any other mass heroes. in every villages or towns in Tamilnadu You will see hoardings of Rajnikanth,Kamalhassan,Vijay,Ajith and such heroes/heroines and their fan clubs. Tamil Cinema,Heroes their dialogues, their mannerisms are all respected and embraced by Common Tamils in their daily life. even in general talks, You can see tamils using movie dialogues. Tamil movies play a big role in their lives. be it Tamil politicians even current Chief Minister is a Tamil Heroine.

As long as His fans and fan clubs are happy, why should we care? :/

Well like i said i saw only few movies i think the count might be just 5.. and chuck norris i must say i have seen only 1 movie of his and that is delta force... I thought he was decent and the movie too Unless u are trying to say chuck norris makes lousy movies and rajnikanth overshawdows him.. Maybe you are right!
but his recent movies and one that i saw on cable dubbed in hindi he was damn damn good..

I am not his fan but i still remember the way he lights his cigarette and fights the goons at the same time.. :19:

There is no shortage of such actors in the South Indian film industry

Soton, Are you being serious here?

He made just one film that too through the funding he got from one of the local church(can see loads of Christian propaganda in the film) Erode/Coimbatore region. He is basically a courier boy from erode and never acted any movie since this one.

This movie was never released in theaters. It was such a badly made film that it became unintentionally super funny and an instant rage over youtube during 2008/09.

I guess you got the wrong impression of him being the next superstar from the comments that people made over his youtube videos.

Sarcasm isn't your cup of tea, I guess :yk

Wow, Soton Wow.

Check movies of Surya, Vikram,Madhavan, Sidharth and many others. and then I guess there is no use talking to you....and you posting that on a non-indian forum...imagine if there were no indians to actually see if that was true or not....Pathetic to say the least!!!! No wonder so many non-indians have many misconceptions....

He is claiming Sam Anderson (whose last and only film was made in 2007) as the next big thing in south Indian film industry and he is (supposedly) from Hyderabad

Don't Hyderabadis speak Telugu ?
And isn't that song Tamil ?

Perhaps he just didn't know, like Tamils probably don't know who's the latest Bollywood star.

Muslims in Hyderabad have their own language. Don't know how to classify it, but it is similar to Urdu with a unique style. I can't speak that Hyderabadi language, but love to hear that.

Perhaps Soton can open a thread on it in the language forum. :)

Its impossible to not know tamil movies and their standards if you are telugu and vice versa..and it is next to impossible to say sam anderson is next big thing...

We have a petty big movie industry which movies with as much quality as bollywood...and when it comes to real cinema...south is way better..we do have masala's like rajnikanth..anyway...he was definately doing his soton's trademark thing when he said sam anderson was next big thing...he was internet phenomana for pathetic movie he made..we joked on..in 2009..and thats it..

Nope its quite hard not to know. It is not like old days, Internet changed everything. Sam Anderson is a comedy piece, his video went viral among Tamils as an example of worst film ever.
