Interesting and poor stats- he looks a better player than those stats and will on his day take attacks apart, but he looks to be playing the same way, irrespective of conditions
 
Pant has been poor with bat for long now. His keeping (except for that dropped catch earlier today) though has tightened now.

I want him to even be more attacking.Bit unsure now
 
He is your Rahane level bat in overseas conditions and that is not bad for a keeper batsman. He is missing out on home test matches.
 
I don't mean to be rude but he could with some first class cricket under his belt and maybe learn a few pointers from Rizwan.

Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant entered his name in the history books during the 2nd Test match between India and hosts South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium on Tuesday. The explosive wicketkeeper-batter had earlier shattered MS Dhoni's Test record in the three-match Test series between the two nations. Keeping the wickets on Day 2 of the 2nd Test match against the Proteas, Pant joined legendary cricketer Dhoni in a special club by taking the 100th catch of his red-ball career.

The 24-year-old wicketkeeper completed Lungi Ngidi's dismissal by taking a sharp catch on Day 2 of the 2nd Test match at Johannesburg. Ngidi's catch off pacer Shardul Thakur in the 80th over not only ended South Africa's innings but the dismissal also paved the way for Pant to join 100-club with Dhoni. For the record, Pant is the fourth Indian wicketkeeper to complete 100 catches in the longest and oldest format of the game for the Asian giants.

The Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper has joined Dhoni, Syed Kirmani and Kiran More in the elite list. Pant is the 42nd wicketkeeper in the all-time list to take 100 catches in the longest format. Former Team India skipper Dhoni had bagged 256 catches in his illustrious Test career. Dhoni is followed by Kirmani (160), More (110) and Pant (100) in the list of Indian wicketkeepers with a century of catches.

Dhoni had managed to take 256 catches in 99 Test matches for India. Pant has achieved the special feat in his 27th Test appearance for Team India. In his much-promising Test career for Team India, Pant has scored 1608 runs from 27 matches. Earlier, Pant had become the quickest Indian to 100 dismissals in the longest format. Pant had surpassed Dhoni by completing 100 Test dismissals in the 1st Test of the three-match series between India and hosts South Africa at Centurion's SuperSport Park.

He will always be bit loose on pitches offering sideways movement so such run of scores in Eng and SA is expected. Even in this lean patch he has scored some small nugget inns which basis situation were very critical for team (25 in Edgbaston, 37 and 22 in Lords, 50 in 2nd inns at Oval, 34 in 2nd inns Centurion).

Don't think it is any cause for concern. He's not a grinder and we shouldn't try to make him one. When he gets true pitches like in Aus or spinning wkts he is truly deadly and can bludgeon game changing 70-80+ scores.
 
I think the criticism is unjustified. With pant you got to take the rough with the smooth, like every player he is going through a bad patch.
 
Surely Rahul Dravid can see past this fraud and bring an actual wicket keeper into the team.
 
He is the modern day Sehwag. He will demolish teams where pitches suit him so he is needed in the team . He will struggle in NZ, Eng and SA but it is not a concern,
 
Gavaskar not happy with Pant's shot:

"You have got two new batsmen at the crease and then you saw that shot from Rishabh Pant. Forgettable, no excuses for that shot, no excuses. None of that nonsense about that being his natural game," Gavaskar said in the commentary box.

"There is supposed to be a bit of responsibility shown. Because there are others taking the blows. There are guys like Rahane and Pujara who have taken it on their body. So you also fight it out. I tell you what, you won't get too many kind words in the changing room."

Yeah maintaing an average of 46/47 is really easy in test cricket. Even KL Rahul and Rahane are finding it pretty easy. :91: :inti

Pant averages 19 since WTC final against NZ. Really poor numbers.
 
People will be left with huge eggs on their faces soon enough, it’s already started to appear.

He is talented and sometimes his madness has a method but recently has batting has become a parody. The credit will start to run out soon and if Ind lose here, he will be fighting for his place
 
Considering we have been playing only 5 batsmen since long and 3 of them are Pujara, Kohli and Rahane, makes his batting numbers even more worrisome.

Even Gilchrist who was an ATG, could average 47.

Unlike Pant, Gilchrist used to assess the situation before throwing kitchen sink!
 
Read this on another Pant related thread and it seems that Pant was classed a GOAT even before he had put on his cricketing pants!

The way he is picking and choosing test matches already shows how much he cares about test cricket, definitely has the minerals for the limited over game, not so sure when it comes to tests.
 
Rishabh took England to the cleaners at the start of 2021, not quite sure what has happened to him since then. Awful shot selection and an arrogant approach in the majority of his Test innings.
 
Amazing the hate and downing.
Dude is a talent and a different one. He will frustrate, entertain, play the perfect shot, edgeit, put the pepper up peoples noses, all possibly in one over/session/match.
Thats the beauty of watching a free spirit like him.
The trouble is there's enough keyboard busybodies who knee jerk it basing an player's entire career/charac ter/being on their last innings score/num of wickets or catches clanged.
Let him be. cricket needs characters. Rishabh is one of them.
Hopefully, his next innings is a cracker.
For me, watching him do his work, the twinkle in his eyes, the smile, the cheekiness, the convo's with the opposition batsmen is fun.

I hope young players from across the world learn to have Twinkles in their eyes, a good smile, the cheekiness, the (brainless) convos with opposition & so on. Afterall Cricketers are demigods, & they should be judged on how well they act, rather than mundane stuff like runs/wickets/catches.

Let matches be won/lost on how much twinkles, smiles, cheekiness etc. a team shows, just like how some players judge their teams on 'Moral victories' rather than trophies they possess

Mercurial players like him often fail when they are young, Adam Gilchrist played his first test when he was 28.
Rishabh Pant would have played 70 tests by then.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has castigated Rishabh Pant after the explosive wicketkeeper batter gifted his wicket to Kagiso Rabada on Day 3 of the ongoing 2nd Test match between India and hosts South Africa. Known for his aggressive style of batting, Pant failed to fire for the KL Rahul-led Team India as the left-handed batter perished for a duck courtesy of his former Delhi Capitals (DC) teammate - Rabada.

Pant is facing a lot of scrutiny for his underwhelming form for Team India in the second edition of the ICC World Test Championship. The Indian southpaw lasted for only three deliveries in India's 2nd innings and his cheap dismissal paved the way for the Proteas pacers to mount more pressure on the vulnerable middle-order of the visitors.

Gambhir, who is an integral part of the Hindi commentary panel for the South Arica series, lashed out at Pant for playing a reckless shot on Day 3 of the Johannesburg encounter. “It’s foolishness. Even if he (Rishabh Pant) had got a six off the ball, he shouldn’t have played the shot,” Gambhir said. Speaking to Star Sports after the end of the day's play, Gambhir slammed Pant again for playing the irresponsible shot against pace ace Rabada.

"Unbelievable, you will call that stupidity and not bravery. The way Rahane and Pujara got you back in this Test match, you have given it back to South Africa. This is not Test cricket. There is a very thin line to call yourself brave. If you had hit a six as well with that shot, you would still not have called that an excellent shot. Test cricket is all about handling pressure and you knew that Rabada was bowling his fourth or fifth over," Gambhir added.

No one is talking about him failing again and again. We were discussing his shot selection. Any thoughts on that? Or are you going to wait for 1 good inning from him to speak again? You have been eating humble pies from quite sometime now. Whether it is Pandya, KL, Kohli as a captain or Pant, it has been a tough last few months for you. You deserve a break. Hopefully Pant can learn from his mistake and play a good inning. His die hard fans can't even criticise his poor shot selection these days. :inti

This is what happens when you try to disrespect a bowler of class of KG Rabada. He changed the course of the game by getting those three middle order wickets in no matter of time.

It was a shot played by Pant out of clear frustration and he deserves a bit of stick from the Indian management for this.
 
Pant is good on flat wickets. Yet to produce a knock on a tough pitch. And his shot selection is worse than afridi.

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid on Thursday admitted that there is a need to have conversations with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant regarding his shot selection. Dravid's remarks came after India stumbled to a seven-wicket loss in the second Test against South Africa at the Wanderers, Johannesburg. Pant had thrown away his wicket in the second innings while looking to go over the top and he was dismissed for a duck. "In the sense that, we know Rishabh is a positive player and he plays in a particular manner which has gotten him success. But yeah, of course, there are times, we will have a level of conversations with him around, it is just about the timing of that shot you know. No one is going to tell Rishabh not to be a positive or aggressive player. Sometimes it is about choosing the timing to do that," said Dravid while replying to an ANI query during a virtual press conference.

"When you have just come in, giving yourself some more time would be more advisable. We know what we are getting with Rishabh, he is a very positive player, he is someone who can change the course of the game for us, so we won't take that away from him and ask him to become something very different. It is about figuring out when is the right time to attack. He is learning, he plays in a particular way but he will keep learning," he added.

Wise words from Dravid.

He's great to watch and can destroy any bowling attack, but in Test cricket you can't keep batting the same way again and again.
 
Risabh Pant doesn't have the technique to survive on pitches with pace, bounce and seam. That Brisbane knock he played, the pitch was fast, bouncy but the players didn't get much swing, seam. Add Swing, Seam to the mix and he is toast, he doesn't have the defensive technique and temperament to survive tough periods of pace bowling which is why he gives up under the pretext of playing his natural game.
 
Pant batting style cannot be changed , he is not a regular batsman , he will play once in a while a match winning innings , you have to back such players.
 
Sunil Gavaskar has added to his criticism of Rishabh Pant, once again pointing out his dismissal during India's second innings against South Africa on Day 3 in Johannesburg on Wednesday. Pant was dismissed for a three-ball duck, trying to give Lungi Ngidi the charge and getting out caught behind. Responding to a fan query that stated 'why is all the focus on Pujara and Rahane, when Pant too hasn't scored much since the Australia series', Gavaskar identified the origin of this specific pattern of dismissal that has crept into Pant's game.

"It's a valid question. This is something one could understand if Rishabh Pant had been batting on 30 and 40. This is something he had not done in Australia. There he applied himself, recognised that there will be hard times at the beginning when you come in to bat and then battling through the hard times, he got set and got to know how the pitch is. And then he played the big shots. That's what he did in Australia," Gavaskar said on The Byju's Cricket Live Show on Star Sports.

Gavaskar mentioned that it was during the home series against England early last year, where Pant made it a point to run down the wicket to bowlers, but the former India captain added that the young wicketkeeper batter cannot bank on the same approach all the time and expect it to always work for him.

"This is something we saw against England, at the start of the series. When England came to India, he was jumping down the pitch and trying to hit James Anderson… he did that so well. But after that he seems to think that is the only way to play. That is not the way to play and I am pretty certain that in the change room, Rahul Dravid would have given him a hearing, or as they say in cricket, Dravid must have given him a 'bamboo'," added Gavaskar.

If you are talking about Brisbane knock then he also tried to play a stupid shot when he was batting on 51. Tim Paine missed the stumping and lost the match for Australia there. :inti

Dravid is saying the same thing now which I have been saying for the past few years. His shot selection is poor and he loves to gift his wicket away. Initially it was in LOI's only but now as expected he is doing it in test cricket also. It seems just like his fans Pant is also taking his place for granted because of his performance in Australia. Was I wrong when I compared Pant with Umar Akmal based on their shot selections during crunch situations? :inti

There would have been no hate if some posters wouldn't call him Gilly or even bigger than Gilly etc.

Let him make his name by performances and then talk about him.
So far, he has some good performances in tests and also some pretty bad ones. In LOI'S he has nothing to show.

Exactly. Most of us were against the overhyping of Pant and calling him the next big thing here. His fans keep quiet for 9 bad innings and then only come back when he plays 1 good inning. They can be seen serving humble pies and throwing eggs on his critics faces after that 1 good performance though. :91: :inti

I totally agree with that part. Good rationale disccussion. He's got mega solar systems to go before he's anywhere near Gilly - for that i blame the bombastic chest thumping indian media who tend to go overboard. In tests, yes he has delivered some awesome ones with the bat. He has also misfired a lot of times.
Regarding keeping, i think his standard has gone up. he is diving more. his legside keeping has improved beyond bounds, look at the way he collects edges off ash on the leg side - not an easy task.
Off course he is not a Dhoni when it comes to collect -run outs but then Dhoni was a one off, a freak when it came to crease awareness for running out batsmen.
Overall, my point was he is is only 23. Some amount of positive criticism wont hurt and hopefully Rahul D will administrer that dose. My comment was against the blanket hate and bashing
In LOI i totally agree, he is dud. needs to improve mega -else ishan k or someone else will take over.

Bhai, I saw UA in NZ 2009 live - i felt this guys is a super talent.
I may be off the mark as didnt follow pak cricket as keenly in the 2010's, but several things UA has done was brng harm upon himself with several not so good decisions combined with some lack of guidance by pcb/team management. yet to see that level of hara kiri from Rishabh.
Only 23 , I feel with time he is bound to improve and hence my comment. Its like spare the rod and spoil the child - i guess indian management will be clipping his wings soon :)
 
He’s technically suspect in conditions which are bowler friendly outside Asia unless he drastically improves his technique the inconsistency will always be there.

start with Pujara and Rahane. Everything is granted for them. Retaining them obviously gives message to youngsters that doing well consistently is not important

I agree. Team management should first drop Rahane and Pujara. Their habit of playing one good inning when they are about to be dropped isn't helping Indian batting. Pant is a wicketkeeper batsman. I don't mind him playing but I am against those fans who overhype him too much. :inti

Team India head coach was not impressed with the way Rishabh Pant threw away his wicket in the second innings. His dismissal could be one of the reasons behind India’s defeat. The veteran said that the team management would speak to the player about his stroke-making.

Dravid admitted that this is how Pant plays, but he wants the player to make smart moves. He advised the wicket-keeper batter to spend some time at the crease rather than playing big shots from the first ball.

“I know he plays in a particular manner but there are times we are going to have a chat with him.No one is going to tell him to curb his game but sometimes it is bout picking and choosing the time to do that,” he said.

Pant was dismissed on a duck while hitting Kagiso Rabada for a big shot.

Pant is a talented player. But an accident waiting to happen. His technique was sooner or later going to be questioned. 8 times out of 10, the hung ho approach will fail. There are slid question marks about his physique for me - needs to lose weight. And clearly there’s some mental issues.


I think Rizwan is miles ahead of this guy.
 
nothing but a glorified hack in tough batting conditions. But indian fans will just dine out off the 1 inns at the Gabba.

All this bhangra from indians like mamoon proclaiming him to be best batsmen/keeper in history of the game is delusion of the highest order.
 
I think he will keep his place even after producing a thoroughly mediocre series on a personal level, but he can’t afford another bad tour after this.

Please do not criticise Rishabh Pant. He is way above criticism. He has achieved in just 2-3 years what other wicketkeepers from Asia have failed to achieve in their entire career. :inti
 
can someone tell me the difference between afridi and Pant, one was rightfully mocked as a hack who produced 1 good innings in 10 but atleast he made an impact with the ball. Pants is just anther hack who had a couple of flukey innings before and all of a sudden deserves ATG status , guy crumbled under a bit of banter from SA, the temperament to succeed is not there at the moment.
 
Just saw his dismissal. Another poor shot and a freebie for the opposition.
 
An average of 35-40 will be good for him. Indians should hope he isn't an as big failure as Buttler is in Tests. Problem is, so far he is not firing at all in LOI's.

At least Buttler in Tests tries to adapt to the match situation on the day and will play defensive shots when needed. Even if he still fails in the end, he does attempt to apply himself. Where Pant just has one mode regardless of the scorecard.
 
What will be interesting is how the relationship with Dravid develops.

I can't imagine Dravid being too impressed with some of the shots that Pant plays. Will patience run out or will he continue to get opportunities under Dravid.
 
If Pujara and Rahane can keep their place for years without scoring any runs, Pant can score 0 in next 10 innings and still should have no problem with getting kicked out.
 
I was quite impressed with the way he played this innings, he left a lot of balls and looked solid in defense, unfortunate he couldn't get a big score...
 
depends on what india want from a keeper, pant will struggle against good bowling but sometimes he will luck out, and he will get good scores in batting friendly conditions, when that happens he can play match changing knocks, but the price of that is that he will fail a lot too.

so do u want a player who contributes a little consistently, or a player who can win you games occasionally. i think India should persist with him. also not sure what kinda of competition he has, saha doesnt look like a significantly superior batting option.

Currently there are no options in tests apart from Saha. Our team management isn't trying new wicketkeeper batsman in tests but in LOI's he can be easily kicked out of our teams and we can play KL Rahul as a wicketkeeper batsman. :inti
 
if there was ever a time for Pant to make india fans start doing bhangra again its now. All will be forgotten with a match winning knock.

What is there to forget? India haven't lost a test-series since hype started over him. So if he again finishes this innings well and India wins there is nothing to forget and only to relish! He is young and he will learn... Time to forget Pujara & Rahane!
 
averaged 39 before this Test.

you’d be forgiven for thinking it was 3.9 based on some of the contributions in this thread
 
Playing yet another match and series defining knock & he is called overhyped? lol. Best wicket keeper batsman and one of the most clutch performer to walk on this planet.
