"The series against the West Indies will be my last Test series" : Misbah-ul-Haq

Nothing polarising about Misbah Markhor we are undefeated in our adopted home (something we have taken for granted! just look at how the glorious 90's and early 2000's teams records besides the mini Woolmer era where we did well!) and drew level with England in England, would have beaten AUS/SAF in a test or two as well had we prepared well but those are just some anomalies in a glorious run for the great haq who took Pakistan to the no.1 ranking for the first time in their history.

Misbah's the Cena of Pak Cricket and that's not even a joke. The nostalgic brigade want the good old days back where we were a rebellious, swashbuckling, attacking team and resent our attritional style under Misbah.

However I remember the 90s and that swashbuckling style as well as a failure to show grit and fight cost us as many games as we won.

The problem is like most things in life today, people are stuck in one camp or the other and won't listen to the arguments of each other. Social media makes it worse. Either you're pro-Misbah or anti-Misbah, I'd say its a mixed record but mostly a positive one. Let's acknowledge the high points whilst accepting he did have his blind spots, which I think is a fairer analysis than outright bashing him undeservedly like some do.

It's a bit too early for farewell thanking posts.

I dont understand why he didn't retire after the Aus series? Never understood why players announce retirement before a new series.

Am not so sure Markhor because as it stands at present the fans have become sarcasting in their booing of Cena and it's almost like a gimmick because its just a fun thing to do with crowds these days who like to be a part of the show. Nikki/Cena were being boo'd but in the moment when the proposal was made at mania they acknowledged the occasion and began to cheer them and when Cena beat Styles for his 16th world title they "broke character" :yk and cheered him on! go back and watch the match (not sure you'd like it given the lack of selling but still worth watching). So there is respect there which Cena has earned over the years and fans do have an admiration for him.

When it comes to Misbah though it's just not the same, there is nothing in between like you say; there is either love or hate. You'd have thought that after all he has done for Pakistan despite the negatives and blind spots there would be some respect at the very least given how close he is to retirement you want what he achieved to be acknowledged but unfortunately many individuals have used this opportunity to further belittle him and his aura. It doesn't matter really because on an international level Misbah is highly regarded and a hall of fame induction is a realistic possibility.

guys keep Wrestling refs off this thread - thanks

We went to #9 under Azhar after Bangladesh series so don't let hatred get in the way of facts. Nobody is hailing Misbah's ODI record (though we did win 2012 Asia Cup, India, South Africa and West Indies away), it is what it is. But its childish to think one man is solely responsible for our ODI decline when we've been declining in ODIs since the 2007 World Cup.

Our board is ultimately responsible for cricketing affairs and they failed to professionalise our domestic structure, invest in grassroots coaching, allowed pitches to deteriorate deterring attacking batsmanship, and dragged their feet for years in setting up PSL when the rest of the world have reaped rewards from franchise T20 which has revolutionised ODI cricket. The problem is fans like you want an easy explanation and a convenient scapegoat so don't look at the underlying issues.

As for "leaving the team at 6" - its incredible how fickle some segments of the Pakistani awaam can be. We went to #1 for the first time in the history of the rankings last autumn but moreover - twice between 2010-2012 and 2014-2016, the team went seven Test series unbeaten for the first time since the 1980s.

No Pakistan captain other than Imran Khan has achieved any comparable levels of consistency in Test cricket.

The defeats to Australia and New Zealand (though we beat NZ in 2011) were abysmal, but every Pakistan Test captain has suffered in Australia, even Imran Khan.

Misbah's ultimate test was in NZ and OZ which he failed miserably with poor captaincy and performances. He should have retired after the Eng series but appreciate his intent for going for it in away tours.

I hope he 's not lying this time. Be very careful about guys like Misbah and their statements he has taken u-turn in the past as well.

You are the one that is lying. Misbah never said he would retire previously..he said he will make a decision.

Not leading against India in Test is a regret: Misbah

Karachi, Apr 6 (PTI) Pakistan’s long-serving test captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who finally announced his retirement from Test cricket termed not leading the national team against India in a Test series will remain one of his biggest regrets.

“What can one say? It is not in our hands but yes it is my regret that I couldn’t lead the team against India.

Specially when our test side was doing so well,” Misbah said in an interview.

“I also see not winning the 2011 and 2015 World Cups as the unfulfilled ambitions of my career,” he stated.

Misbah said politics had put a stop to Indo-Pak bilateral ties since 2007 but after he became captain in late 2010 he remained optimistic he would get a chance to captain in a test series against the arch-rivals.

“It didn’t happen all these last seven-eight years.

Although I have played in India and I know their people want to see both teams play regularly against each other,” he said.

Misbah, 42, said a Test series against India would have completed his cricket career.

“I have achieved a lot in my career that is why I decided to retire from T20 internationals in 2012 and than ODIs after the World Cup 2015. And now I think after taking everything into count this is the best time for me to also retire from Test matches,” he said.

He confirmed the three match test series in West Indies starting from later this month would be his final for Pakistan.

“It is a personal decision and the Pakistan Cricket Board has nothing to do with it. I have been thinking about it for a while now,” he said.

The senior batsman said that given the strength of the Pakistan and Indian test sides it was a shame they had not played against each other for so long.

“We became number one in test rankings they also achieved this pinnacle and that too without playing against each other.

I just hope bilateral ties resume as soon as conditions improve,” he added.

Misbah confirmed he had thought about retirement from test matches by end of 2015 but the tours to England, New Zealand and Australia spurred him on to continue leading the side.

“These were challenging tours and I knew that if I retired before them my critics would say I shied away from the tough battles and I also wanted to be with my team, a team that developed under my captaincy and achieve major success stories,” he said.

Misbah also made it clear he was under pressure from no one to retire. The Pakistan captain who turns 43 next month said he had seen lot of ups and downs in his career.

“I made my Test and ODI debuts in 2002 but after 2003 I had to wait for four years before breaking back into the national side. It was a long wait but after that whatever I achieved was enough rewards for me.”

Misbah who has appeared in 72 Tests, 162 ODIs and 39 T20 matches for Pakistan said he had not as yet decided what career he would adopt after stepping down as Test captain.

“But I will continue playing domestic cricket or T20 leagues.” He never scored a century in ODIs.

Misbah admitted that after the recent spot-fixing scandal broke out in the Pakistan Super League he felt disheartened and very sad.

“After the hard work we put into reviving our image after the 2010 scandal, this came as a shock. I just hope the players now learn their lesson.”

“And I maintain we need to have exemplary punishment for players found guilty of corruption in cricket,” he said.

PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan also praised the outgoing captain for his contribution to cricket and announced that a befitting farewell function would be organized to honor the man.

“Misbah was a great ambassador for us wherever he went and led the side. Other cricket board have all sent us letters praising the team’s behavior and his leadership,” Khan said.

I hope so too, he said he would retire once he would touched down in Pakistan after Australia but he did not. I have to see a team without his name to feel good, not till then.

It's a bit too early for farewell thanking posts.

Do you always make decisions at the right time?

Sometimes the emotional attachment to making a decision makes you defer it.

I am not saying he announced his decision at the right time. We all agree it was a tad too late and he could have done it sooner.

But why should we not glorify his achievements just because he delayed it a little longer than he should have?

Had we performed better in Aus maybe won the match chasing 440 then Misbah would have retired. Personally I think he didn't retire as he didn't want a bad loss as his last series. Despite being a polarising guy for outsiders he was someone that was able to gel the team together. And I am glad that he supports Sarfaraz for the test captaincy as well. As I don't feel our players are mature enough to play under multiple captains without breaking into groups.

Yes! Finally (I just hope he doesn't change his mind now).

Thanks for everything Misbah!

I wouldn't go that far, the 80s side travelled better. We drew in the West Indies in 1988 when nearly every team couldn't lay a glove on them, and beat England and India away in 1987. Imran also has a World Cup to his name.

However I agree NO team had to face as many obstacles as Misbah's side post-fixing scandal and post-Lahore attacks stripping us of all home international cricket. People say the UAE has better facilities and conditions suit us but its not home. As terrible as Pakistani pitches are, at least there's more pace and bounce than the UAE where strokemaking is hard work due to how slow and low the surfaces are. Also the players don't get to play in those conditions from an early age.

The England tour is the highlight for me not only because of the results but the way we won over the whole country. I genuinely dreaded a large dose of Pak-bashing from the English media and crowds after what happened in 2010. I even feared our team would be caught up in the wave of Islamophobia that's occurred post-Paris and post-Brexit, being a Muslim team with a history of controversies.

Instead, we departed as the most popular touring team in England since the West Indies in 1991. Even the hacks from the right-wing papers like the Mail and the Telegraph were gushing over Misbah's team, not that I care for their validation, but we needed redemption after 2010.

Non-UK PPers have no idea how that series filled our community with pride, not just me as a British Pakistani, seeing MY team go punch for punch with England in their own backyard given the political climate, conducting ourselves with class and dignity, after everyone wrote us off beforehand (where's your 4-0 now Beefy?). Forget drawing, we should have won that series 3-1. We were excellent for nearly three days at Edgbaston but we let it slip, before recovering magnificently at the Oval. And its Misbah who set the tone at Lord's.

Hence why i put Imran up there as the greatest. Misbahs cricketing record with regards to trophies and creating a force is not the same as Imrans but he did something beyond that. He saved our game. Its a different kind of greatness. One that will only be measured in years to come. But just remember during the 80's and 90's we played quite a few series both ODI and Test at home. It allowed players like waqar and mushy the chance to bed in and win matches. They didnt have to worry about living out of a suitcase or match fixing controversies, or war. This team has fought everything and took it in their stride. And we would not have been able to do it if Misbah was not at the helm.

I would like tos ee how other teams would deal with this. Just look at england, one stupid comment from Butt and they fell apart for two ODI's and nearly the whole series

Just before Misbah took over, under Salman Butt we defeated Australia and UK in UK.
Performance wise Pakistan was doing fine.

Regarding Dark Times...it was just mishandling by management. Fixing was and will remain part of this sports.

Misbah destroyed our game.
He refused to resign even from T20 even he was dropped.
He was kicked out of ODI
but due to his connections, he is given carrot with director's position so he can announce and retire "gracefully".

As soon as Sherhryar retires later this year, Misbah will be out of PCB in no time.
Misbah's last three years is based only on his personal relationship with Chairman.

Misbah had his luck as he became captain Pakistan started playing most of their cricket in UAE. Our first test series out of UAE after 2013 was in 2016.
He brought our ODI cricket to one of the most darkest days ever, we are floating at 8 being white washed by Bangladesh and struggling to be qualify for the next world cup.
Our Test cricket had one of the most boring team ever in the history of our cricket. There was no excitement or flair or young talent. Side was full of 33+ players showing their talent on how to beat England,Aus on spin friendly pitches.

....and he leaves this test team not at no.1 but at no.6

He was forced to retire by SHK he didn't want to leave until 2018.

Also had he retired after pathetic NZ,Aus tours our innocent people wouldn't be singing songs of his praises. so in a sense it was a clever move.

Lol, under Salman Butt we lost 3-1 in England being bowled out for sub-100 totals three times out of eight and only drew 1-1 with Australia in that mini-series after just barely managing to chase 180.

We hadn't won a single Test series in FIVE years until we beat NZ in January 2011. My god what a clueless post all round.

Please don't be bitter because Shoaib Malik couldn't even justify a place in the team to be captain these last six years.

Luck? LOL. Unbelievably bitter. At the end of the day, the team was mostly WINNING.

You are just upset because your heroes have not lived up to the hype so you have a scapegoat in Misbah. Pakistan cricket does not need 'fans' like yourself who support individuals over team.

If Misbah was an Englishman they would talk about giving him a knighthood, yet our own deluded fans cannot even offer him a thank you for the service he has provided post 2010. Suppose these are the same people crying when boom boom finally retired.
