The UK knife-crime epidemic

A man in his 40s has been stabbed to death in north London, the Metropolitan Police said.

Officers were called by London Ambulance Service paramedics to a home in Shelley House, Boyton Road, Hornsey just after 6pm on Monday.

They were responding to reports of a fight and a man having been stabbed.

The victim was found with a stab injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man, whose age is not currently known, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and was taken into custody.

A teenager has been found guilty of murder after a 14-year-old boy was knocked off his moped by a car before being stabbed to death in the road.

Ayoub Majdouline, 19, was accused of being one of five young men who had driven around looking for a rival gang member to attack when Jaden Moodie was killed.

Jaden was out drug dealing for the Beaumont gang when he was killed on the evening of 8 January, the Old Bailey heard.

The attack in Bickley Road, Leyton, east London, was captured on CCTV.

Footage played in court showed Jaden being knocked off his moped by a stolen Mercedes before he is seen lying defenceless in the road.

He was then stabbed by a group of people before the Mercedes drove off.

Jaden suffered nine stab wounds and bled to death in the road as the car sped away, the court heard.

His mother, Jada Bailey, has condemned his killers as "cowards".

In an interview with ITV News London, she said: "When they were killing him they could see he was a child. So I've got no sympathy and no words. They were cowards. He [Majdouline] killed a child. He's a child killer."

Majdouline, from Wembley, north London, had denied murder and possession of a knife.

He was seen on CCTV at a Travelodge hotel in Walthamstow on the day before the attack, the court heard.

The teenager was wearing yellow rubber gloves, one of which was later found to have traces of the victim's blood and the defendant's DNA, the jury was told.

Majdouline had a troubled upbringing in Leyton and had turned to drug dealing for older boys to make money.

His Irish mother and Moroccan father split up when he was aged seven, the jury was told.

Majdouline's father died in 2015, so the teenager went to live with an aunt and later went into foster care, his trial heard.

He was identified by the National Crime Agency in 2018 as a victim of "modern slavery", amid concerns of exploitation by older youths, the jury was told.

The teenager said in court he sold drugs "for and with" the Mali Boys gang, including county lines in Basingstoke, Ipswich and Andover.

He had been caught with drugs and carrying knives, but despite serving time behind bars, went straight back to dealing, the court heard.

Majdouline told jurors he got "confused" sorting out jobseekers' allowance when he turned 18.

He said he returned to drug dealing after a few weeks of volunteer work, adding: "I felt I had to make money the only way I knew how to make money."

Majdouline, who is white, said the majority of the older Mali Boys were Somali, but "black boys, Asian boys and white boys" sold drugs for them.

He explained why he had been given a knife to carry while dealing, saying he had been "sliced" on one occasion in Basingstoke.

Majdouline said: "Because I was selling drugs for this older guy in Leyton and obviously when I was selling drugs, a lot of people I was selling drugs to were older than me.

"He didn't want me to get robbed or lose his drugs so he gave me a knife... to hold a knife to sell drugs for my own safety."

In a series of agreed facts read to the court, jurors learned that Jaden had been in trouble with police since he was 13 years old.

He was handed a youth conditional caution in March last year after police seized an air-powered pistol, Rambo knife and cannabis during an altercation in Nottingham.

He admitted appearing in a Snapchat video with an imitation firearm in November last year.

Jaden had been found with crack cocaine at an address in Bournemouth the previous month, jurors were told.

Olcay Sapanoglu, from the CPS, said: "This was a ferocious attack on a 14-year-old schoolboy who was singled out as a target.

"Armed with a deadly weapon and intent on violence, Ayoub Majdouline stabbed Jaden as he lay seriously injured and defenceless on the ground. This shocking display of violence on a London street was caught on CCTV. It is truly harrowing.

"The prosecution case included the CCTV footage of the murder and DNA evidence linking Majdouline to the crime. Throughout his trial Majdouline claimed somebody else had worn his clothes and Nike trainers and gone on to murder Jaden - the jury rejected these baseless claims.

"Nothing will bring Jaden back but I hope this conviction goes some way in providing comfort to the family of Jaden Moodie."

Jaden's father Julian Moodie added that the killers "showed no remorse" after they sent him "flying up in the air" and stabbed him.

As they left court, the family embraced each other and said: "For Jaden, we've done it."

A 24-year-old man has appeared in court after another man was stabbed to death in front of Christmas shoppers.

Jordan Brown is accused of murdering 23-year-old Jordan Davies in the busy town centre of Barry, in South Wales.

Brown spoke only to confirm his name, address and nationality at Cardiff Magistrates' Court.

Mr Davies was attacked outside an Iceland store in front of shocked Christmas shoppers at about 4pm on Tuesday, with South Wales Police describing the incident as "extremely distressing".

DCI Mark O'Shea, senior investigating officer from South Wales Police, said: "This was a tragic incident which has cost a young man his life and has devastated families.

"The attack happened in a busy town centre and I would like to thank those members of the community who came to Jordan's aid and did what they could to help him.

"While many tried to assist, we know that the incident was captured on camera and I would appeal to anyone with any mobile phone or dash-cam footage not to share it publicly and instead pass it on to the police so that we can fully investigate and ensure justice for the young victim."

A man has appeared in court after being accused of stabbing a 35-year-old to death while he slept.

Simon Emmons, 39, has been charged with the murder of Ebrima Cham - known as Brim - at a friend's flat in Hounslow, west London, on 19 December.

Police were called to the flat in Grove Road at 11.30am and although emergency services attempted to save him, the victim was pronounced dead soon afterwards.

A post-mortem found Mr Cham died from multiple stab injuries. Police say he was stabbed to death as he slept.

Emmons was arrested on Thursday and appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on Saturday, dressed in a grey tracksuit.

In an earlier statement, Mr Cham's family said they felt "numb with pain" and had "so many questions, not least 'why?'"

They also said their Christmas celebrations had "morphed into our time of mourning the loss of our Brim for evermore".

The Met Police previously said a 68-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder two days after the killing has been bailed to a date in mid-January.

A 44-year-old man also previously arrested on suspicion of murder has been released with no further action.

Deliveroo rider stabbed to death in Finsbury Park
A moped rider thought to be working for food delivery companies Uber Eats and Deliveroo has been stabbed to death in north London.

The 30-year-old man was attacked in Charteris Road, near the junction with Lennox Road, Finsbury Park, shortly before 19:00 GMT on Friday.

No arrests have been made, but police believe there was a row with another driver.

Det Ch Insp Neil John said the stabbing appeared to be "spontaneous".

Deliveroo confirmed the victim worked for the company, while Uber Eats said it was "looking into it".

On Saturday delivery riders gathered in nearby Stroud Green Road said the stabbed man had been the victim of a road rage attack.

One delivery driver said the victim was a 30-year-old Algerian known as "Taki", although he was unsure of the English spelling.

A man who said he was a friend of the victim said: "He was a good man.

"He doesn't make any trouble - he works and he goes home and he ends up being killed while he's working."

He added: "It's not safe to work by yourself any more - what can you do?

"If someone comes at you with a knife you give them what you have or they are going to stab you."

Another 23-year-old rider, who gave his name as Paul, said: "Taki was a nice guy. He was a gentleman.

"I would talk to him every day. He always said hello."

Last year, 95 people were stabbed to death in London, according to police statistics.

Islington Council leader Richard Watts tweeted: "I'm horrified to hear about this appalling crime".

He added: "What an awful start to the new year."

Reacting to the stabbing, Labour leader and Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn called for better protection for delivery drivers.

He said: "I am totally shocked. This is a very close-knit community, and this is yet another stabbing on the streets of London.

"People should not be carrying knives. A human life has been taken.

"There are a lot of people working as delivery drivers, they must have better conditions of employment and employers must take more responsibility for their safety too.

"Delivery drivers do a great job in London all of the time. Yet they are vulnerable. They are often on zero hours contracts, yet the food they are carrying is insured.

"So the delivery driver is less valuable than the food they are carrying - we need to end the whole culture of gig employment."

The Met Police said the victim's next of kin had been informed and a post-mortem examination would be held in due course.

A Deliveroo and Uber Eats delivery rider stabbed to death in a possible road rage attack has been identified.

Takieddine Boudhane, 30, was attacked while on his moped near Charteris Road, in Finsbury Park, north London, at about 18:50 GMT on Friday.

A white van linked to the stabbing was found in Islington and seized. Met detectives said they were looking for the driver.

Det Ch Insp Neil John said the wanted driver was the "subject of a manhunt".

Mr Boudhane, an Algerian national, had been living in the UK for about three years, police said.

On Sunday morning police found a "white VW Caddy panel-type van" in the borough where Mr Boudhane was killed.

"It has been removed to a police compound where a full forensic examination will be undertaken," Det Ch Insp John said.

"The driver and person believed responsible for this tragic matter is now the subject of a police manhunt.

"At this time I am unable to release any further information concerning the identity of the driver as this may hinder the ongoing police investigation."

On Saturday delivery riders gathered in Stroud Green Road - near the scene of the attack in Lennox Road - said Mr Boudhane had been the victim of a road rage attack.

One man who said he was a friend of Mr Boudhane described him as a "good man".

He added: "He doesn't make any trouble - he works and he goes home and he ends up being killed while he's working."

He added: "It's not safe to work by yourself any more - what can you do?

High street stores selling lookalike stab-proof vests

Knife crime offences are at a record high but Sky News has found major retailers are cashing in on the epidemic.

Sleeveless jackets which resemble stab-proof vests are being sold in stores across the UK and online, with clothing brands including Topman, boohooMAN and Urban Outfitters selling what they often brand as "tactical vests".

At first glance they look like a stab-proof vest, but offer no protection.

When 37-year-old Dean Dawe's teenage step-son Darren was held up at knife-point twice in 2017, he decided as a parent to take matters into his own hands.

While Darren, 17, turned to making music to cope with the anxiety he developed from the attack, Mr Dawe began creating slash-proof clothing for adults and children.

The items are lined with Kevlar, a material that can offer protection against knives.

When asked about the lookalike vests on the high street, Mr Dawe told Sky News that he understands fashion houses need to appeal to the masses, but is worried that wearing these vests could attract unwanted attention.

Mr Dawe told Sky News: "If you're walking around with a stab proof vest you're going to get other people who might want to put it to the test and challenge it.

"They may think, you've got something to hide or you've got something that they want. So as discreet as possible is the best solution."

Sky News spoke to a number of anti-knife crime organisations who said they fear the vests are glamourising violence and promoting a knife crime culture.

One of these is The Ben Kinsella Trust, one of the biggest anti-knife crime charities in the UK.

It has educated more than 16,000 young people about the dangers of carrying a knife, after being founded following the unprovoked knife attack that took teenager Ben Kinsella's life in 2008.

Patrick Green, CEO of the trust, is worried the trend normalises the wearing of stab-vests.

He told Sky News: "What worries me more is that for many young people this is just a normal garment that you would wear. They don't think about what it's really saying. They don't think about what it's saying about the society we live in, and that's the real worry.

"You do not need to go around wearing a stab vest - this is not something that is normal."

One online retailer claimed the vests it sold offer some protection, alleging on social media they were stab-proof.

Elegant Troops, which posts its vests alongside clips of street violence and young people showing off weapons, told Sky News the trend has been propelled by popular culture.

"The major force behind the success of the brand is the fact that a lot of influencers perform wearing similar types of vests," a spokesman told Sky News.

Last year, grime artist Stormzy made headlines for wearing a stab-proof vest designed by street artist Banksy on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.

This was widely seen as a political statement, but similar vests were seen at New York Fashion Week last year and have also appeared on Fashion Week catwalks.

Lydia Banjo, 17, who has worked as a young mayor and regularly meets with organisations to tackle crime, says she has friends who have been stabbed and knows people who have died as a result of knife crime.

Asked about the vests, she says she would wear one and that her friends do because they see them as fashionable.

She told Sky News: "You see people in the street wearing camouflage trousers, tops and tracksuits and it's not like they want to fight and bomb another country - it's just a fashion statement.

"So I feel like if you're going to use something like that and say that it's igniting violence, you're going to have to cut a lot of things down in the fashion industry."

Sky News approached Topman, Urban Outfitters and BoohooMan.com about their decision to stock a range that so closely resembles stab vests.

BoohooMan.com's spokesperson said it was a "street wear trend" and they do not "condone any form of violence and would never use fashion or trends to condone this sort of behaviour".

Following Sky News' request for a response, the vest sold by Urban Outfitters featured in this piece has been taken down from the website.

A Home Office spokesperson said: "Violent crime destroys lives and devastates community and we are determined to do all we can to tackle it.

"The government is delivering on the people's priorities by recruiting 20,000 extra police officers, jailing violent criminals for longer and expanding stop and search powers."

A 10-year-old boy has been stabbed in the street while out with his mother.

They were approached by a man in Belper Street, Leicester, at about 17:20 GMT on Saturday, who stabbed the boy and then ran off, police said.

A member of the public called emergency services and the child was taken to hospital in Nottingham, where his condition is described as non life-threatening.

His mother was not injured in the attack.

Leicestershire Police described the suspect as a light-skinned Asian man, in his mid-20s, about 5ft 10in tall, of chubby build, and wearing a brown jacket.

Det Insp Tim Lindley said: "This was an act of violence against a young child who was out, in the street, with his mother."

He appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of the area around the time of the attack to contact police.

A dad of three was fatally stabbed by a drug dealer in a savage attack in a car in Birmingham after a row about a spilled drink.

And in a chilling twist a court was told that the callous killer then calmly went out to a McDonald's restaurant for a feed.

35-year-old Malik Hussain was stabbed four times with a large hunting knife by Adeeb Mirza and then left dying in the street.

Adeeb Mirza fled to Pakistan on the same day as the killing - and is still on the run.

But his brother Haseeb Mirza, 26, of St Benedict's Road, Small Heath, was unable to get out of the country and was found guilty of murder following a three week trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

And on Thursday he was jailed for life and must serve a minimum of 21 years before being considered for parole.

Man 'carrying two knives' shot dead by police in central London

A man has been shot dead by police in Westminster, central London, after brandishing two knives at officers.

The incident is not being treated as terror related, the Met Police said.

The force said officers were patrolling the area at about 11.30pm on Sunday when they noticed the man "acting suspiciously".

When challenged, the man produced two knives, police said.

Armed officers responded by firing a Taser and a gun at the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

No officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

The Met Police tweeted: "A man has been shot dead by officers following an incident in #Westminster at 23.27hrs on Sunday, 8 March.

"This is NOT being treated as a terrorist incident."

Road closures remain in place while police continue their investigations.

The Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have been informed.

The IOPC said its "thoughts and sympathies" were with those affected and that investigators were on the way to the scene.

"It is mandatory for us to conduct an independent investigation when the police fatally shoot a member of the public," it said.

"We have established protocols with the police to ensure our investigations do not hinder their ability to conduct enquiries as part of their related investigations."

Wembley park murders: PCs 'took selfies next to sisters' dead bodies'

The mother of two sisters murdered in a park said her grief had "been taken to another place" after two officers were suspended amid allegations they took selfies next to their bodies.

Nicole Smallman and Bibaa Henry were stabbed to death at a park in Wembley earlier this month.

Mina Smallman has complained about the Met's initial response - saying she had to organise a search for her daughters.

No-one has been charged with the murders.

Speaking to the BBC, Mrs Smallman, the former Archdeacon of Southend, said the pictures "dehumanised" her children.

"They were nothing to them and what's worse, they sent them on to members of the public," she said.

Senior officers from the Met and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) personally visited the family to explain what had happened after they were made aware of the alleged photographs.

Mrs Smallman said she was told the photos showed the girls' faces and she fears the images will appear on the internet.

"This has taken our grief to another place," she said.

"If ever we needed an example of how toxic it has become, those police officers felt so safe, so untouchable, that they felt they could take photographs of dead black girls and send them on.

"It speaks volumes of the ethos that runs through the Metropolitan Police."

The IOPC said the pictures were allegedly "shared with a small number of others", adding the Met was "handling matters involving those members of the public who may have received those images".

Yesterday evening, the Met said two officers had been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and suspended from duty.

Met Commissioner Cressida Dick said she was "disgusted" with the allegations against the officers.

Mrs Smallman said she had coordinated a search operation on weekend her daughters died and it was Nicole's boyfriend, Adam, who found the sisters' bodies and the murder weapon.

She says the police were "making assumptions" when they didn't immediately respond when the sisters were first reported missing.

"I knew instantly why they didn't care. They didn't care because they looked at my daughter's address and thought they knew who she was.

"A black woman who lives on a council estate."

Ms Smallman, 27, had been with friends celebrating Ms Henry's 46th birthday at the park on the evening of 5 June.

Detectives believe they were killed by a stranger who repeatedly stabbed them in the early hours of 6 June - their bodies were not found until the following day.

Forensic officers have since been searching a large area of the park including a pond and have trawled through hundreds of thousands of tonnes of rubbish that was accidently cleared from the scene.

Detectives believe the killer received injuries in the attack "which caused significant bleeding".

The IOPC is also separately investigating how the Met handled calls from worried family and friends of the sisters after they went missing

Derby County player Andre Wisdom is recovering in hospital after he was reportedly stabbed during an "unprovoked" attack in Liverpool.

According to Sky Sports News, Wisdom was visiting relatives in the Toxteth area of the city, but was stabbed and robbed on the street as he got out of his car.

In a statement, Derby County said: "Derby County Football Club can confirm that Andre Wisdom has been the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery.

"He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.

"Merseyside police are investigating and the club will focus its efforts on supporting Andre and his family. Therefore we will not be making any further comment at this time."

The club also tweeted a picture of the defender, saying: "Get well soon, Wis".

The player, who lives in Merseyside, joined Derby County in 2017 from Liverpool for a reported fee of around £3m.
It is expected that Wisdom will be released from hospital over the coming days, but he will almost certainly miss the next few Derby games as he recovers from his injuries.

Promotion-chasing Derby County play Preston on Wednesday, and then head to local rivals Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after a 10-year-old boy was stabbed in Bolton.

The child was taken to hospital in a stable condition from Bridgeman Street and is expected to be discharged later this evening, police said.

Officers were called at about 1.20pm on Saturday to reports of a 10-year-old boy having been stabbed.

Greater Manchester Police said it is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the public.

Specialist officers searching the area after the assault arrested an 18-year-old man and he is being questioned by detectives, a police spokesman said .

Neighbours came out on to the street as an air ambulance landed nearby, several police cars arrived and a cordon was put in place on the road.

One mother told the Manchester Evening News: "I do worry about my own children. I always see that little boy walking down the street with his mum and I know them to wave to, I really hope he's ok."

Detective Superintendent Joanne Rawlinson said: "No child should ever be the victim of such a distressing incident and my thoughts are with this young boy and his family as he receives medical treatment in hospital.

"We are pleased to hear the news that the boy is doing well and that he may be discharged later today. We hope that he makes a full and quick recovery.

"I appreciate that such news is likely to cause upset and shock within the local community, as well as the wider public, but I can assure you that we are doing absolutely everything we can to piece together the circumstances of this incident."

A teenager pleaded for his life before he was stabbed to death in a car park today, witnesses said.

The victim was heard begging “No, no, don’t do this” as he was ambushed and beaten by a gang who inflicted the fatal knife wound before fleeing in a car.

Neighbours raised the alarm after they were woken by screams at about 12.30am this morning. They tried to save the teenager but he was pronounced dead in hospital about 30 minutes later.

The killing, in a car park between a housing block and NHS buildings in Elmfield Way, Maida Hill, is London’s sixth violent death in 11 days.

A resident told the Evening Standard: “I first heard two thuds, and when I looked they were already on him. He was crawling on the ground, the other kids were kicking and punching him all over. He was covering up begging them to stop. There was a stab motion then there was bleeding, and someone shouted ‘call the police’.”

Another witness added: “There was a lot of noise ... the boy was shouting ‘No, no, no, don’t do this’. Then they did whatever they did and then sped off in a car.”

She added: “Neighbours went to help - they were trying save him. They tried very hard."

Another person who witnessed the attack said: “I heard him pleading for his life there was lots of shouting.”

Scotland Yard said homicide detectives were in the process of informing the victim’s family.

There is concern that violence that has been suppressed during lockdown could now spike.

Recent deaths include: Jahreau Shepherd, who was stabbed to death at his 30th birthday party on the Black Prince Estate, Kennington, on Saturday; Dean Edwards, 43, who was shot in the back of the head in Betts Park, Penge, on Sunday; and Muhammed Samir Uddin, 19, who was stabbed to death outside Crossharbour DLR station in Poplar on Friday.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was seriously injured in an attack at Thorpe Park.

The victim suffered a slash wound to his stomach following an "altercation" between two groups on the Surrey theme park's footbridge at around 4.50pm on Saturday.

Guests were locked down as police arrived.

The injured man was taken to hospital and officers said his condition was being described as serious.

The incident is not being treated as terror-related.

In a statement, a Thorpe Park spokesperson said: "The resort's security team and fully trained medical staff were at the scene within minutes and administered immediate care until emergency services teams arrived.

"The police were alerted immediately and the resort is co-operating fully with their investigations."

They added: "We will be maintaining contact with both the injured guests' family and the police."

Detective Inspector Andy Greaves, from Surrey Police, said: "I'm keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who has video footage of this assault.

"The two groups of people were close to the exit inside the park on the bridge when the assault took place.

"We're still trying to establish what has happened, however I'd like to stress that this incident is not being treated as terrorism-related at the current time.

"Enquiries are ongoing to locate all those believed to have been involved. Officers will remain in the area for some time this evening and I'd like to thank Thorpe Park for their assistance and co-operation with our investigation."

Law student Megan Apps was inside the park when it was locked down but didn't see the incident herself.

She told Sky News she was "shaken up" and described "quite a bit of panic" at the time because of reports that a man had been stabbed.

"We were told that it was just fainting or that someone had fallen into the water," she said.

"We were really kept in the dark, there was quite a bit of panic since all over social media we were told a stabbing had happened."

She also questioned whether security checks were adequate.

"My bag got a 10-second glance, they didn't search one section of my bag," said Ms Apps.

"No one was being patted down at the entrance and there were no detectors. I didn't hear much over the tannoy, just that the rides remain open, we were just told at the exit that we couldn't leave."

Thorpe Park reopened on 4 July after being shut due to the coronavirus lockdown.

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a male member of staff at a hospital in Brighton was stabbed "several times".

Connolly Mellon, 30, from Brighton, will appear at Brighton Magistrates' Court today in connection with the incident at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Sussex Police said.

He was arrested shortly after the 56-year-old hospital worker was attacked on Sunday morning.

The hospital was put in lockdown following the incident on Sunday and searches by armed police of the premises concluded in the early afternoon.

The victim was treated for several stab wounds and was later discharged from hospital.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted: "My thoughts go out to the staff member at the Royal Sussex County Hospital who was injured this morning.

"I will not accept violence against NHS staff - we will bring the full force of the law to bear on anyone who attacks public servants in their line of duty."

Unison union central Sussex hospitals branch secretary Mark Sargent said: "Our thoughts are with our injured colleague and his family.

"NHS workers who've been keeping people safe during the pandemic shouldn't have to face violence when they're doing their jobs. Security staff and police deserve huge credit for their timely and decisive action."

Police said on Sunday that the hospital was "quickly secured" following the attack.

They added that the "apparently isolated and unexplained incident" is not being treated as a terror attack.

A young offender has been convicted of murder after he stabbed another teenager to death at a knife awareness course.

Vladimir Nachev, 18, attacked Hakim Sillah twice in the chest with a "cruel irony" during the training session, Isleworth Crown Court heard.

Nachev stabbed him in a "rapid sequence of infliction" at Hillingdon Civic Centre in Uxbridge, west London, last November.

Mr Sillah, 18, was taken to Hillingdon Hospital, but died later the same day.

Nachev, of West End Lane in Harlington, Hayes, was convicted of one count of murder and one count of wounding with intent.

Jurors were told the two young men were not friends but had a relationship "resulting from their involvement in the street selling of drugs in and around Hayes".

Multiple witnesses described how, after arriving at the training session late on 7 November, Nachev immediately "went for" Mr Sillah in "an eruption of violence".

Judge Pushpinder Saini QC said the witnesses had referred to Nachev as "the aggressor" and "had the better of (Mr Sillah) throughout".

"This was a very fast moving and violent situation that was over in seconds," he said.

Nachev claimed his actions at the civic centre were in self-defence, telling a youth worker after the incident that he needed the knife "for my own protection".

"Vladimir told me 'they were punching me and filming me that's why I did it'," the youth worker said, adding he had been "sobbing and crying" on the phone.

"(He said) they were laughing and taking the mick out of me. I took out the knife. I didn't want to hurt him, I just wanted him to stop punching me."

Nachev said he had intended to stab Sillah in the arm, but he had moved and the blade went into his chest instead.

The course, run by the Youth Offending Teams, was for those aged under 18 with a previous offence related to weapons.

All participants at the session had been risk assessed and "those classified as high risk were precluded from attending", the trial heard.

The court was shown footage of an incident in September where Mr Sillah was threatened and assaulted by an unidentified person.

A second incident happened later that month in which Mr Sillah suffered three stab wounds but said he again could not identify his attacker.

The prosecution alleged Nachev was the assailant both times and his behaviour showed a "hostile" attitude towards Mr Sillah that led to his death.

Nachev is due to be sentenced on 7 September.

Greater Manchester Police have released images of a man they want to speak to after a mother was stabbed in front of her young child in a "vicious and unprovoked attack".

Detectives are treating the incident in south Manchester on Saturday afternoon as attempted murder.

The victim, 24, was walking with her five-year-old son on Rudheath Avenue, Withington, when she was approached by a man with a knife.

He began stabbing her before running away along Bromborough Avenue, then continuing in the direction of Whitchurch Road, police have said.

She was taken to hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Paramedics assessed her son at the scene, but he had no visible injuries.

Police are appealing to the public for help to trace the suspect, and said there would be an increased police presence in the area during the investigation.

Detective Inspector John Robb said: "I understand that this will cause concern among the local community and residents, but I want to reassure the public that we are doing everything in our powers to trace the man responsible and ensure he is brought to justice.

"Please do not hesitate to speak to our officers if you have any concerns or queries.

"If you believe you recognise the man in the image, or if you were near the area at the time and saw something that didn't seem quite right, please get in touch with police as a matter of urgency."

Two teenagers have been jailed for life after trying to decapitate a factory supervisor as they hacked at him more than 100 times with a samurai sword.

Kiyran Earnshaw, 18, and Luke Gaukroger, 16, admitted murdering Robert Wilson in the "frenzied and senseless attack" in Huddersfield in January this year.

Mr Wilson, 53, had approached Earnshaw and Gaukroger as they loitered outside the Thornton and Ross Pharmaceutical plant.

CCTV footage played in court showed how the teenagers later passed a 20-inch blue samurai sword between them in an attack that lasted around 10 minutes.

Audio recorded from the factory supervisor's phone call to a security firm during the attack captured Gaukroger, who was 15 at the time, shouting "get his head, I want to cut his head, Kia I want to cut his head".

Mr Wilson's pleas to the youths to stop the attack were also captured in the recording that was played at Leeds Crown Court.

Peter Makepeace, QC, prosecuting, said Earnshaw was the first to begin hacking at Mr Wilson after producing the weapon from his tracksuit bottoms.

The prosecutor added that Gaukroger could be heard saying "pass me the shank, pass me the shank".

Mr Makepeace said Earnshaw passed the sword to the younger teenager after delivering multiple blows and kicks to Mr Wilson.

The prosecutor added that the pair paused at one point to catch their breath and to rifle through Mr Wilson's pockets, taking his coat.

Mr Makepeace went on to say that Earnshaw and Gaukroger held the sword together, crouched towards Mr Wilson's body, and seemed to "make a concerted effort to saw the head from the shoulders".

He continued: "Both then jointly stab the upper body using their combined force."

Police who arrived at the scene reported seeing one of the pair "using the sword in sawing motion to the neck area of the deceased as if trying to detach the head from the body".

Mr Makepeace said Earnshaw was Tasered twice before he was arrested and officers used an incapacitant spray on Gaukroger.

Mr Wilson had left the plant to talk to the youths in the car park outside the factory with his colleagues Paul Thewliss and John Badejo.

The prosecutor said Mr Badejo was seriously injured as he tried to help his friend and both he and Mr Thewliss were forced to flee for their lives.

Mr Makepeace said the defendants were seen taking tablets "washed down with vodka and other alcohol" as they hung around Huddersfield with friends before the incident in January.

He said that Earnshaw was slurring his speech after his arrest and was asking why he had been arrested and complaining of police harassment.

He told officers he had taken cocaine and the tranquilliser Xanax.

Tests on drugs Earnshaw had in his possession found they were Flualprazolam - an artificial substance similar to Xanax which produces drowsiness, confusion and disinhibition.

Both defendants admitted murdering Mr Wilson and causing Mr Badejo grievous bodily harm with intent.

Judge Mr Justice Lavender sentenced Earnshaw and Gaukroger to life with minimum terms of 22 years and 16 years, eight months respectively.

Elaine Wilson, the night shift worker's widow, confronted the killers in court and asked: "How on Earth have we come to this and why?"

Mrs Wilson said she was sickened to receive a letter from one of the defendants saying it was the "worst night of my life and 'I'm sorry'".

She told the judge she had been shocked to "feel so much hate".

Mrs Wilson said to the defendants: "I want you to know you have taken the life of a much respected, admired and good man."

Mr Wilson had two stepchildren and enjoyed gardening, golf and walking in the Yorkshire Dales, the court heard.

Sentencing the teenagers, Mr Justice Lavender said: "As he lay dying, you used the sword in repeated attempts to cut off his head.

"You ended his life and you brought lifelong misery and grief to his wife, his two stepchildren and his other family and friends."

The judge said: "This frenzied and senseless attack on a man who was quite unable to defend himself went on for about 10 minutes."

He added: "I have watched the recording and it is a truly gruesome sight, made all the more ghastly by the fact that your blows and words, including your abuse of this dying man, and his attempts to speak, were being recorded, because he had begun a telephone call to the firm's security company."

The judge noted that both teenagers had committed offences of violence in the past.

He said this included an incident in October 2016 when Earnshaw used a knife to stab a fellow student at his school twice in the stomach.

A man is in a life-threatening condition after he was shot with a crossbow in Uxbridge, west London, police say.

A 17-year-old boy has died after being found with a stab wound in northeast London.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to a road in Walthamstow at 9.20pm on Friday.

Paramedics treated the teenager, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now working to establish the boy's identity and inform his next of kin.

A crime scene is in place, but no arrests have been made.

The Met's Specialist Crime Command (Homicide) is leading the investigation.

A local resident said that before the emergency services arrived they "didn't hear anything at all that indicated violence, heard no shouting etc that we thought was odd".

Sniffer dogs were present last night, while police removed two cars, they said.

The resident added: "Police knocked on our door but we didn't see anything and we don't have CCTV.

"It is incredibly tragic and such a senseless loss of life. It feels especially shocking when it happens so close to home, and on an otherwise peaceful street."

Following the news, Former Scotland Yard Detective Chief Superintendent Gerry Campbell tweeted: "How many wake up calls does London need?"

Across England and Wales knife crime is at its highest level in over 10 years - with London recording the highest number of attacks.

Teenager dies after Wandsworth double stabbing

A teenager has died after suffering knife injuries in a fight involving a number of people in south London.

The boy, believed to be aged 15, and another thought to be the same age, was found near Garratt Lane Burial Ground, Wandsworth, just before 17:00 GMT.

Police said the first victim died in hospital while the second also sustained knife injuries, not thought to be life-threatening.

Two males were arrested following the fight, the Met said.

Officers said one of the suspects was detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He had suffered a head injury that did not require hospital treatment.

The other was arrested on suspicion of affray.

Road closures and an extensive crime scene remain in place.

A Section 60 order, which allows police officers to stop and search anyone in a specific area without needing to have reasonable grounds, has also been authorised for the whole of Wandsworth.

The incident is not being treated as terror-related.

When Sidali Mohamed left his maths lesson a few minutes early on 13 February last year, he seemed happy. The 16-year-old was going to pick up his younger brother.

It was a journey he didn't get to complete.

Sidali was murdered outside the gates of his college by a boy the same age as him.

He was the first of three Birmingham teenagers who were stabbed within 12 days of each other last February. They died within 10 days of one another.

These cases fell into a BBC project, tracking the first 100 killings of 2019.

Our aim was to dig into the detail to understand why homicide had increased in the previous three years.

We discovered a high number of stabbings and the prevalence of young murder victims and perpetrators.

Nearly a quarter of the 100 people we identified as responsible for the killings were teenagers.

The three Birmingham murders led the local police chief to talk of a "national knife crime emergency" and once again highlighted the problem of serious youth violence.

And this week, a report by the Commons Justice Committee said violence-against-the-person offences by children have increased by 10% over the last decade.

Sidali Mohamed had been brought to Britain as a young boy by his family as refugees fleeing violence in Somalia.

Despite the heroic efforts of his teachers and medical staff, he died in a Birmingham hospital two days after he was attacked.

He had been studying to become an accountant and was described by his parents as "a role model to his younger brothers".

Sidali's violent, premature death left a "huge void" in the family.

His killer, Louai Ali, was subsequently jailed for at least 19 years.

A trial heard how he blamed Sidali for problems his cousin was having with some students at Joseph Chamberlain College in Highgate, Birmingham.

Wearing a balaclava and gloves and carrying a 10-inch, two-pronged zombie knife he had bought for £50 on Instagram, Ali waited outside the college gates.

CCTV captured what happened next. He punched Sidali, fracturing his jaw.

Following a tussle on the grass, Ali plunged the knife into Sidali's chest.

The attack, witnessed by dozens of students, was over within a minute.

Like the boy whose life he claimed, Ali had also shown great potential.

He represented England as an amateur junior boxer.

Someone who knew him at his local gym but did not want to be identified told the BBC he "could have gone far in the boxing world".

"The young lads and girls looked up to him."

But Ali couldn't contain violence to the ring.

As his life spiralled out of control, he picked up convictions for robbery and battery.

A video circulated on social media showed him assaulting a girl in a fast-food restaurant.

In another he boasted of being the "blood-clot boxer".

At the time of the murder he was on police bail following a serious incident when he almost killed his neighbour, Russ Molloy.

Mr Molloy had challenged the teenager after he saw him and some friends smoking cannabis near young children.

After that, "when our paths crossed he would intimidate me," Mr Molloy told the BBC.

"I was always trying to be the grown-up and defuse it - he was just a kid.

"But he didn't listen. He was uneducated. It's the influences he had around him."

In December 2018, Ali and another man launched a ferocious assault on Mr Molloy, cornering him near his home and slicing his arm with a long knife.

"It could have been me [who was killed], so I count myself lucky," Mr Molloy said. But he is angry that Ali wasn't placed in custody while the case was investigated.

Instead, less than two months later, he killed Sidali Mohamed.

Mr Molloy can forgive Ali for attacking him, but says: "I don't think anyone else can forgive for taking a life. That's a step beyond my forgiveness."

Within five days of Sidali's murder another 16-year-old Birmingham boy was murdered.

Abdullah Muhammad was strolling in a park before attending prayers at his mosque when he was stabbed three times during a robbery.

Three men have since been sentenced for the "horrific" and "unprovoked" attack.

Abdullah's father paid tribute in court to his son, saying: "He was a loving, respectable and hard-working young man who would always look out for and always help his brothers and sisters, who clearly looked up to him in admiration."

The following week, yet another college student, Hazrat Umar, 18, was fatally stabbed in the city.

His life was "extinguished over a petty disagreement", a court was told.

Hazrat was walking to the gym when he was set upon by Adam Muhammed, a fellow student two years younger than him.

The pair had had a row earlier and Muhammed skipped an exam to exact his revenge.

He repeatedly plunged a huge blade into his victim, stamped on him and left him to die in the street.

Muhammad admitted murder and was sentenced to life, with a minimum term of 14 years and three months.

Hazrat's uncle is Nazir Afzal, former chief prosecutor in the north west of England, who said: "Hazrat was one of those people who quite frankly warmed a room when he walked in. He was cheerful, joyful. He was absolutely adored by his own family and extended family."

"My family's grief is repeated, as your survey has found, dozens and dozens of times every year," said Mr Afzal in reference to the BBC's 100 killings research.

We also discovered the number of teenage homicide suspects has risen to a five-year high.

That's according to figures obtained from freedom of information requests across 22 police force areas.

Whilst the numbers fluctuate over time, recent incidents have led the government to push for longer prison terms for teenage killers.

Despite his grief, Nazir Afzal says this is not the answer.

"Punish them. Yes, try to deter other people. But also at the back of the judge's mind must be the view that this person can still make a contribution to society once they are finally released."

Officers have released CCTV stills of two of the four men believed to have carried out the attack on which took place on Thursday, October 1.

A 16-year old boy was attacked by four men who jumped out of a blue VW Passat car in Richmond Road at 2.45pm.

One of the suspects was armed with a knife and stabbed him the victim in the arm. They then fled the scene in the car.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and the teenager was taken to hospital for treatment before being discharged.

Det Con Charlotte Joseph from the East Area Command Unit said: “This was a brazen attack carried out in broad daylight in the middle of a busy street.

“Those involved are clearly dangerous individuals who need to be apprehended.

“I would ask anyone who recognises the two males in the images, or who has information that could identify the others involved to contact police immediately.”

Six people are in hospital following a large disturbance in Cardiff in which two people were arrested.

One person suffered head injuries and remains in a serious condition, while three others are believed to have been stabbed.

A teenager has been stabbed to death in Newham, east London.

Police and the ambulance service found him with injuries in Woodman Street, near the Royal Docks and London City Airport, just before 7pm on Friday.

Despite efforts to save the boy - believed to be 15 - he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lawrence Adu, the boy's neighbour and a friend of his uncle, said he had known him all his life.

"I just got home, I'm so shocked," he said. "He's a nice young man, very handsome and always laughing."

Metropolitan Police said next of kin had been informed.

Separately, a 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital in west London after being found with a stab wound and injuries consistent with a corrosive substance.

He was found in Whitton Road in Hounslow, not far from the Twickenham rugby ground, at about 6.15pm and is believed to have life-threatening injuries.

There have so far been no arrests in both incidents.

Elsewhere in London, 31 knives were confiscated on Thursday when two boys aged 15 and 16 were arrested at a property in Islington, north London.

They remain in custody.

Sergeant Pete Luciano of the Violent Crime Taskforce said: "The seizure of these 31 weapons will have undoubtedly prevented them from being used in acts of violence and potentially even saved lives.

"Our officers are patrolling areas known for violence and this case proves the value of intelligence led stop and search.

"Reducing serious violence is the Met's top priority and I hope the community feel reassured we were able to remove these weapons from the streets."

Obviously all details aren’t present but the way media presents these stabbings is if it’s random kids getting stabbed...it’s primarily kids involved in gang activity ...ie it comes with the territory...

So you always see the ‘he’s a lovely boy’ etc and then later find out they are affiliated to a gang in some way and have some knife history themselves...

If you aren’t part of the subculture then this knife violence doesn’t touch you for the most part ...it’s not random ppl who get stabbed...

Tell that to the parents of the boy.

Tell that to the parents of the boy.

Most likely to be parent not parents.

There is a strong correlation between single parent households and such gang knife crime, especially in places like London.

Sure the authorities need to do more to protect these communities but the communities themselves need to do more - and one thing they could do overnight is address the the whole single parent issue.

Broken families are fuelling crime within the London black community and it’s time they did something about it.

Tell that to the parents of the boy.

Obviously parents have rose tinted spectacles when it comes to their children...

There was a drill rapper who boasted about those who he had stabbed and challenged his opps to step to him ...they did...

His parents of course thought he was an angel...

Again as someone who lives in London ...knife crime is a subculture thing...if you’re not a roadman and have no affiliation with a gang then knife crime doesn’t come to you...

I don’t mean this in a facetious way but ‘they did something about it’ is such a throwaway line...

How do you address broken homes and in particular fatherless homes as a community?...this also presumes such a thing as community exists...

Newham stabbing: Two arrests after boy killed in street

Two more people have been arrested after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death in east London.

The teenager was found fatally injured in Woodman Street, near the Royal Docks in Newham, on Friday evening.

Scotland Yard said a boy, 17, had been arrested on suspicion of murder, while a 28-year-old man was held on suspicion of attempted murder.

A 25-year-old man who was previously arrested on suspicion of murder has been released with no further action.

Det Ch Insp Mark Wrigley said officers were "still working to establish exactly what took place on Friday night" but that the two new arrests were "a positive step in our investigation".

"The senseless killing of a 15-year-old has understandably shocked the community," he said.

The two arrested males remain in custody.

An 18-year-old stabbed to death outside his home on a busy road was killed protecting his family, according to his sister.

Hussain Chaudhry, a first year law student, died "cradled in his mother's arms" following the attack in Walthamstow, northeast London, she said.

Police and paramedics were called to Lea Bridge Road at around 5.20pm on Wednesday.

The teenager, who suffered a stab wound to the neck, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His mother and brother both suffered slash wounds to their hands in the incident.

Flowers have been left outside the family home where he died.

The victim's sister Afia Ahmed Chaudhry wrote on Twitter: "Yesterday my beautiful baby brother left this world the same way he came in, cradled in my mother's arms.

"He died defending his family. His eyes were bright, his face showed no pain, he was at peace. To God we belong & to Him we return. You're home now baby, I'll see you soon."

An online fundraising appeal set up in Mr Chaudhry's honour said: "Hussain was an incredibly kind and beautiful soul who always looked out for others.

"He was someone who always had a smile on his face, and was a blessing to the community."

Neighbour Gladys Diamfuah told Sky News her eight-year-old son had been left traumatised after witnessing the aftermath of the deadly attack.

She said: "My son came outside and he called me screaming that somebody had stabbed our neighbour in front of our house.

"I came out and saw my neighbour on the floor bleeding and he was unconscious.

"Since then he has not been able to sleep. He is panicking and crying at night and today he said he didn't want to go to school."

The SOAS University of London said in a statement it was "shocked and deeply saddened" to learn of the tragic death of one of its students.

It said: "Hussain died yesterday in tragic circumstances, defending his mother in an attack, in the course of which she and his brother Hasan, also a SOAS student, were both injured. Both Hasan and his mother are recovering and we wish them a swift return to health."

In a message to students, Scott Newton, head of the university's law school, and Mr Chaudhry's academic advisor, Dr Samia Bano, said: "We will remember Hussain as a very kind and thoughtful student who was excited to be studying law and brought this enthusiasm to his classes and his interactions.

"Hussain had high ambitions and equally high aptitude and promise.

"All of us mourn his death and our love, prayers and condolences go out to his brothers Hasan and Aysh, also a SOAS law graduate, and his sister Afia, a SOAS history graduate, and to his parents, extended family, and friends."

Detective Chief Inspector Perry Benton, of the Metropolitan Police's specialist crime command, has urged anyone driving in the area at the time to check dash-cam footage, and for local residents to check doorbell cameras.

He said: "A young man has lost his life in tragic circumstances and my thoughts are with his family and friends at this awful time.

"The attack happened on a busy road during rush hour and I know there would have been lots of vehicles passing at the time of the incident."

Fares Maatou: Three arrests after boy, 14, stabbed to death outside Zzetta Soul Fired Pizza restaurant in east London

A close friend of Fares Maatou says he was "happy" and "loved life" after he was stabbed to death in Newham, east London.
A "really nice" 14-year-old boy has been stabbed to death in east London - prompting tributes and a murder appeal from police.

Emergency services were called to reports of a stabbing in Barking Road in East Ham, Newham, just before 4pm on Friday.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, Fares Maatou was pronounced dead shortly after 4.30pm.

DCI Perry Benton, of the Metropolitan Police, said officers believed Fares was attacked with a "large bladed item".

He thanked local people for coming forward and appealed to the public to help police catch the child's killers.

"Fares's family are, of course, absolutely devastated," he said. "I have assured them of my total commitment to bringing to justice those responsible for this senseless killing.

"They will be supported by specialist officers at every stage of what will be a terrible ordeal for them in the weeks, months and years ahead.

"We have already seen fantastic support and received a good deal of information from local people. I thank them for that, and ask anyone with information or any witnesses who have yet to speak with police to please come forward and tell officers what they know.

"We are piecing together the picture of what happened on Friday afternoon, and every fragment of that picture will be crucial."

He added that three boys had been arrested and remained in police custody.

They are a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of murder, and another 15-year-old boy in connection with the incident.

"This is a fast-moving investigation and there will be further developments," DCI Benton said.

A close friend of Fares said he was not involved in any gang activity in the area.

The tearful 15-year-old said: "He was really nice. He had nothing to do with the gang stuff around here.

"He would just be there for you. If you ever needed him he would be there. He was happy. He loved life."

Messages on cards at the scene referred to a "brother" and someone who "touched so many", with one saying: "We miss you a lot we want you back."

A small group of young people gathered next to the tributes, hugging and comforting each other.

A member of staff at the restaurant said a FedEx worker, an off-duty police officer and a woman had all rushed to the teenager's aid as he lay in the street outside the restaurant.

"They were just shouting at him 'wake up, wake up, try to breath'," he said, adding that someone started chest compressions while he called 999.

"Three or four of us were all shouting loudly 'one, two, three', so there was a rhythm for compression."

He said the victim, wearing a school uniform, was "totally blacked out", adding: "I was hoping he would end up in hospital and stay alive."

Honestly it was blood curdling, scary and shocking to read all these knife crime reports. One of the posters above tried to explain that if you are not part of the gang culture you will most likely be safe - while I agree with that largely - it is also true that innocent bystanders could be killed and in fact were killed.

Is there any research or study which throws light on why it is happening or is it affecting specific communities? The bottom line perhaps will be poverty but I would like to know more specific reasons.

Police have launched a murder investigation after a teenage boy was stabbed to death in north Birmingham.

The 14-year-old died at the scene after nothing could be done to save him when paramedics arrived, West Midlands police said.

The teen was attacked on College Road at the junction with Wardour Grove in Kingstanding at around 7.30pm on Monday by up to seven people, who ran off towards Chester Road.

A murder investigation was immediately launched and the area is flooded with police officers searching for the offenders.

Officers are currently speaking to witnesses and fast-tracking CCTV enquiries.

Detective Inspector Ranj Sangha, from the force's homicide unit, said: "This is a shocking and senseless tragedy. Another young life has been taken far too soon.

"We have officers with the boy's family who are facing the cruellest of news this evening. My heart goes out to them.

"We will be leaving no stone unturned in our hunt for the callous individuals responsible for this, or for anyone harbouring them, knowing what they have done."

Separately, a teenager in north London also died on Monday after being found stabbed on a tennis court.

Officers were called to Montrose Park in Edgware on Monday evening following reports of a group of men fighting inside the tennis court area, Met Police said.

Two teenage boys have died after being stabbed within hours of each other in London on Monday evening, the Metropolitan Police said.

A 15-year-old died after being stabbed in Greenwich at around 5pm and a 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene after being stabbed in Lambeth just before midnight.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said he was "heartbroken and appalled" by the deaths.

Police were called to Woolwich New Road in Greenwich at 5.23pm after violence erupted in a busy area near Woolwich Arsenal station.

A resident of the Oval estate where one of the incidents happened said the victim was a 'good boy'
They found a 15-year-old boy with stab wounds. Pictures on social media showed members of the public holding up sheets to provide privacy as emergency crews tried to save the boy's life but he died at the scene around half an hour later.

Another 15-year-old, who later took himself to hospital suffering from a knife wound, has been arrested on suspicion of the other boy's murder.

In Lambeth, a 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene after being found injured in an estate at Oval Place at around 11.45pm. There have been no arrests.

A tarpaulin sheet covered a stairwell at Elworth House, a block of flats just off the main Clapham Road.

Members of the public placed flowers and personal messages at the scene in tribute to the boy.

Cards read "shine bright" and "love you forever … my bro".

A 25-year-old resident of Elworth House said: "I watched that little boy grow up.

"He was a good boy… he had his own mindset, you know. Bless him."

Superintendent Petra Lazar said of the Greenwich incident: "It is shocking and extremely saddening that a teenage boy has lost his life as the result of knife crime.

"My thoughts at this time are with the family of the boy who has died.

"This incident will understandably cause worry and concern to local residents and I would like to reassure them my officers are supporting the murder detectives in every way we can.

"Increased patrols will be carried out in the area over the next few days."

Reacting to news of the two stabbings, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "I am heartbroken and appalled by the deaths of two teenagers in our city.

"Every loss of life leaves a family and a community devastated.

"I am determined to do everything in my power to support the police and our communities to put an end to these horrendous crimes and keep our young people safe."

My wife works in social care in London; she's seen countless academic reports linking the rise of knife crime to poverty, Tory austerity policies and the defunding of local councils over the past 12 or so years, but nobody in government seems to care. Indeed, the rise benefits them. It creates a conservative-friendly Us vs Them dynamic (with all the usual racial overtones) and undermines a Labor stronghold (London).

Two 14-year-old boys have been found guilty of murdering a teen who was "lured" to a park and fatally stabbed.

Oliver Stephens, 13, was pronounced dead at Bugs Bottom fields in Emmer Green, Reading, on 3 January.

Oliver was convinced to go to the park by a 14-year-old girl, where he was "ambushed" by the two boys and stabbed to death, Reading Crown Court previously heard.

Jermaine Cools: Teenager arrested over Croydon 14-year-old’s murder.

Murder detectives have made an arrest in connection with the killing of 14-year-old Jermaine Cools in Croydon.

A 16-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday and remains in custody at a south London police station.

Jermaine Cools, 14, was fatally stabbed near West Croydon station at 6.40pm on November 18.

His devastated mother Lorraine Dudek, 35, had told The Standard previously: “The only thing I want for Christmas can never happen - that is to have Jermaine back.”

A post-mortem examination gave Jermaine’s cause of death as multiple stab wounds.

Jermaine became the 27th teenager killed in the capital in 2021 following his death on November 18.

Scotland Yard has already warned the number of fatalities for the year could top 30 young people for the first time, overtaking the record of 29 in 2008.

A 16-year-old boy has died after being stabbed in Hillingdon, west London.

The killing is the 30th teenage homicide in the capital this year - a new record.

Police were called to Philpotts Farm Open Space in Yiewsley at 7.30pm on Thursday, where the boy was found suffering from a stab wound.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.25pm.

Detectives say his next of kin have been informed. Formal identification has yet to take place and a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

The stabbing occurred less than an hour after another in the south of the capital, which claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy.

Police were called to Ashburton Park, Croydon, shortly after 7pm and gave first aid to the boy before the ambulance service arrived. The teenager was pronounced dead at 7.36pm.

The Metropolitan Police said it was too early to say whether the two killings, more than 20 miles apart, were linked.

Met Police Commander Alex Murray said: "I am deeply saddened by every single homicide this year, and greatly concerned by those that have been teenage killings. Each one is a tragedy leaving behind heartbroken families and distressed communities.

"My thoughts are with the victims and all those impacted. They are not statistics, not just numbers, they all have families, and they all should have had their lives ahead of them.

"They and their families have been robbed of something precious and we should all be doing everything we can to stop this," he said.

He added that the police were devoting "huge resources" to preventing homicides and said the Met was not "complacent" about knife crime.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, he said he cannot imagine the pain the families of loved ones are feeling right now.

Commander Murray added: "I did want to reassure you and say that tackling violence and youth violence is our number one priority in London."

He said the force has hundreds of police officers working in schools "all trying really hard to tackle violence at its causes".

He said there has been significant reductions in violence, knife crime and gun crime in recent years - but not for teenagers.

"With teenagers, we have seen an increase in homicides," he said, adding that his message is that "you cannot carry knives in London… this is what happens when knives are carried and we all have a role in relation to tackling knife crime".

Commander Murray also urged people to contact independent Crimestoppers to report individuals carrying knives.

Community activist Anthony King told reporters that the community needs to "partner with the Met Police and work hard and tirelessly to eradicate the issue of knife crime" and urged all parents to search their children and their bags for knives.

He said children carry knives "as a way to protect themselves" and believes the pandemic has had an effect on young people with more broken homes and more children suffering from mental health issues due to the lockdowns.

The latest incidents brings the total number of teenage killings in the capital in a calendar year to 30 - passing a previous peak of 29, set in 2008.

BBC — Croydon stabbing: Boy, 15, killed in London park named.

A 15-year-old boy stabbed to death in south London has been named by police.

Zaian Aimable-Lina was found fatally injured after police were called to Ashburton Park in Croydon shortly after 19:00 GMT on Thursday over reports of an assault.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the heart.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder on Friday but was bailed until late January, police said.

Zaian's death marked the 29th killing of a teenager in London in 2021.

A 16-year-old boy stabbed in west London on Friday took the total number of teenage homicides in the capital in 2021 to 30 - the highest number since 2008.

Police said the victim's family had been informed and they were being supported by specialist officers.

Det Ch Insp Richard Leonard said: "My thoughts continue to be with Zaian's family and friends as they cope with this tragic loss. My team are continuing to work around the clock so that we can give Zaian's family the answers they deserve.

"Zaian's death has sent shockwaves through the local community and London as a whole.

"He was just 15 years old and had his whole life ahead of him and we need the community to work with us to bring those responsible to justice. No matter how insignificant you may think it, if you have information that can help, you must do the right thing and contact us immediately."

Police have made a second arrest following the death of a 15-year-old boy who was stabbed at a park in south London.

Zaian Aimable-Lina was knifed in the heart shortly after 7pm on Thursday and died at the scene in Ashburton Park, Croydon.

A 15-year-old youth was arrested on suspicion of murder late on Saturday and remains in custody, Scotland Yard said.

Another boy, also 15, has been released on bail to a date in January after being arrested the previous day, also on suspicion of murder.

A post-mortem that took place on New Year's Day gave Zaian's cause of death as a stab wound to the heart, the Met Police added.

Arsenal will wear a white kit in Sunday's FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest as part of an initiative to combat youth knife crime in London.

Twenty-seven teenagers were stabbed to death in London in 2021, with teen homicides in the capital the highest since 2008 despite a national lockdown.

Called No More Red, the campaign hopes to give young people "more safe, positive spaces".

The kit will not go on sale, but will be given to community organisations.

Arsenal's initiative is supported by kit sponsors Adidas as well as actor Idris Elba and former Gunners and England striker Ian Wright.

"We can never accept loss of life through youth violence as 'normal' in our city and it's so important that we all work together to create a better environment for young people," said Wright, who will take part in a mentorship scheme with Elba.

The 46-year-old was treated by paramedics but despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at around 12.43am.

Officers earlier said they believed the Polish national, who lived locally, was attacked by a "group of males" following a verbal dispute in Tavistock Road.

A post-mortem carried out on Thursday gave the cause of death as stab wounds to the groin and chest.

The victim's family are said to be "distraught" as officers continue their inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, of the Specialist Crime unit, who is leading the investigation, said: "We believe Dariusz was attacked by a group of males in Tavistock Road following a verbal dispute. The group then fled in different directions.

Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 16-year-old boy who was found with stab wounds in Manchester.

Emergency services were called to Thirlmere Avenue in Stretford, a town about four miles southwest of the city, at about 7pm on Saturday.

Teenager Kennie Carter was taken to hospital after being treated by paramedics at the scene, but later died of his injuries, Greater Manchester Police said.

A knife fight between two youths on the top deck of a bus in front of shocked passengers is being investigated by police.

Video has emerged of the altercation involving one who brandished a machete with an eight-inch long blade, and another who held a long, thin metal bar.

The pair, who both wore black coats and covered their faces, were filmed using the weapons to take swipes at each other as the bus travelled through Streatham in south London.

In the stairwell, a third person was slapping what appeared to be a long sword against the handrail.

Passengers watched on as the fight lasted "for about five minutes" before the youths left the vehicle.

Police officers arrived, but all those allegedly involved had already fled.

A person who filmed yesterday afternoon's incident, but did not want to be named, said: "The kids with the knives came on the bus in Streatham.

The victim, a 21-year-old woman, was approached by a man on Brook Rd, near Dollis Ln in Cricklewood on June 24.

"I couldn't believe it was happening. They left after about five minutes of back-and-forth."

Writing online, another passenger said they were sitting downstairs but could hear the fight going on.

They added: "I was just sitting still and hoping that it didn't become deadly. The driver stopped the bus while it was happening and called the police."

A Met spokesman said: "Police were called at 4.41pm on Thursday 3 February to reports of a fight on board a bus in the area of Telford Avenue, SW2.

"Officers attended but all of those involved had fled prior to their arrival. There were no reported injuries.

"There have been no arrests and enquiries continue."

A teenager who stabbed a girl 60 times in a "brutal, pre-planned and unprovoked attack" has been given a life sentence, police have said.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, left his victim fighting for her life following the frenzied assault in Sittingbourne, Kent, last July.

The teenager lay seriously injured for at least seven hours before being discovered by a dog walker and she was airlifted to hospital in London.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, her assailant was found to have looked on the internet to try and find out how police investigate murders.

The youth admitted attempted murder and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday to a discretionary life sentence, which means he will serve a minimum of 10 years and, if he should then be released, he will be subject to a whole life licence.

Victim 'has demonstrated exceptional bravery

Giving details of the case, Kent Police said on arrival at hospital the victim was found to have suffered 60 stab wounds to her body and a total of 99 injuries were recorded by a pathologist who reviewed the case.

A spokesman said: "Numerous people who knew the offender, and the victim, identified him as a possible suspect and officers detained him later that day.

"A review of his phone led to detectives uncovering numerous deleted text messages which had been shared between the pair on the evening of the offence.

"Other messages saved on the phone showed he had a desire to stab the victim.

"Immediately after the offence, he also carried out internet searches to try and learn how the police investigate murders."

'Clear danger to the public'

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Kimber said: "The brutality inflicted on the victim of this case was abhorrent and managing this investigation has been exceptionally harrowing.

"It is worrying that someone so young could have coldly calculated carrying out this sickening attack.

"Throughout the course of our inquiries, providing the victim with the best possible support was our absolute priority.

"She has demonstrated exceptional bravery throughout and her fighting spirit is shown by the physical recovery she has made."

He added: "I am pleased to see that this teenage boy has now been held to account.

"He presents a clear danger to the public and I sincerely hope that the support available to him in prison gets to the root cause of his dangerousness and prevents him from committing any further harm."

Four stabbed with one dead in shocking day of violence in London

Seven separate incidents have shocked communities to their core

Four people have been stabbed leaving one dead in shocking acts of violence across the capital all in the same day (March 24). The seperate incidents happened all on the same day, which also left a man in his 20s fighting for his life after a stabbing at a supermarket and a teenager in hospital with stab wounds.

As London warms up, violence is expected to be on the increase without the dampening effect of the poor weather. But that explanation won't lessen the alarm felt by local residents who witness stabbings in their neighbourhood.

In South London, a man was arrested on suspicion of arson after a roof conversion burnt out in Croydon. A pedestrian in Brixton was hit by a bus and a motorcylist was left in critical condition after colliding with a lampost in Wandsworth.

"A dedicated team of officers is working around the clock to trace the person responsible for this and my thoughts are with this woman's family as they come to terms with their tragic loss," she said.

A 16-year-old boy who was stabbed to death in a south-east London park has been named by police.

Teon Campbell-Pitter was found with fatal injuries in Fordham Park after police were called to nearby Angus Street, New Cross, following reports of a fight.

He is the third teenager to be stabbed to death in London this year.

No arrests have been made by police, who have launched a murder inquiry.

Det Ch Insp Nigel Penney said: "Teon was attacked in broad daylight in an area that was busy with people on a Wednesday afternoon.

"I would like to thank those who have already come forward and spoken to police about what they saw but I know there will be others who have yet to do so.

"We are building a picture of the events that led to Teon's murder, and your information could prove to be a vital piece of that picture."

Mr Egan tweeted his reaction to the stabbing, saying he was "very sad to hear about a young life lost to a senseless act of violence".

He added: "Council staff are working closely with the family and police - if you have any information please report it as soon as possible."

Joyce Jacca, who lives locally, said violence in the area, and across the capital, was making people considering leaving. She said felt "really unsettled".

"It is on my doorstep, it's so local. I'm really worried," she told BBC London. "I'll have to be meeting up with my kids and I want to know they'll get home safely.

"I am angry, I can't see why they [children] can't talk.

"We've had enough of our young people dying. All this is doing is frightening young people of London."
