The UK knife-crime epidemic

Horror moment taxi driver is dragged into terrifying knife warfare between London thugs

An innocent minicab driver was caught up in the knife warfare between London youths when a terrified passenger leapt back into the vehicle to escape a knife-wielding mob.

The terrifying attack was caught on CCTV inside the man's cab in Rainham.

Details of the attack had been previously released by the Met Police, saying he received minor injuries and took himself to hospital, while calling police.

However, the true horror of the attack has been revealed for the first time in the alarming video.

The footage starts with the driver saying goodbye to three men, with a good-natured exchange.

But another car is seen to pull up and a commotion soon starts outside, before one of the men races back into the car and begs the driver to leave.

Masked men appear, with one smashing a rear window before another lunges in with a knife to stab the victim.

Another masked knifeman can be seen on the other side trying to slash him through the open door.

The victim, who is also armed with a knife, tries to defend himself by lunging at either side while begging the driver, who seems reluctant to move, to make off.

He is stabbed during the attack, with blood starting to pour from the wounds.

There is an agonising wait during which the driver appears to be too scared to move, before he cautiously drives away with the injured man offering him cash for the damage and to go faster as the white Mercedes containing his attackers begins to follow.

Blood is seen on one of his arms and hear his right eye.

The victim pleads with him to go to the nearest police station as the driver asks where he wants to go.

He then phones a friend and tells him he has been stabbed.

The man then calls police and says he has been attacked and is being followed by them.

He tells the 999 operator: "I need police, I'm getting followed by a car. They're following me, they tried to stab me."

She asks what road he is on, before the footage, being shared on social media, cuts out.

In its earlier press release, the Met said: "Officers from the Metropolitan Police received reports of a stabbing in Spencer Road at 5.10am on June 23.

"At the scene, they confirmed that a man had been approached by a group of people and was then stabbed.

"The victim of the stabbing is said to have taken himself to a hospital whilst reporting the incident to the police.

"A police investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.

Asked about the video, a Met Police spokesperson said: "Police are aware of a video circulating on social media showing dashcam footage of a man in a car being attacked by a group of men armed with knives.

"The incident was reported to the Met on 23 June and remains under investigation."

Woman killed in Manchester triple stabbing named as Alberta Obinim

A woman who died following a stabbing in Manchester has been named as 43-year-old Alberta Obinim.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the incident, which happened at around 11.20pm on Sunday in Barnard Road, Gorton, Greater Manchester Police said.

Two other people, a 17-year-old girl and a 64-year-old man, also sustained life-threatening injuries after suffering "serious stab wounds" at a property on the road, according to the force.

Police are speaking to witnesses to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

However, according to the force, early indications suggest the suspect was known to the victims, and it is being treated as an isolated incident.

Community leader, Ibrahim Abu, described Ms Obinim as a "lovely woman" who "always made sure people were smiling".

He told Sky News the news of her death had come as a "big blow" to the community.

"Yesterday she was at church, dancing and praising. She was at church... and we wake up and hear she has died," Mr Abu said.

He said the community is "pleading to God" to help heal the two other injured victims.

"We hope they will come back to us in good health," he said.

A crime scene is still in place on Barnard Road while police continue to investigate.

Detective Superintendent Toby Facey said: "We understand that the local community and further afield across Greater Manchester will be rightly shocked and concerned after waking up and hearing this tragic news this morning.

"Our thoughts remain with those affected and their loved ones at this difficult time. We are doing all we can to support them."

DS Facey said within minutes of a call being made, officers were at the scene, and that an arrest had been made.

Teenager found guilty of murdering 15-year-old Holly Newton

A teenager has been found guilty of murdering a 15-year-old girl in the street after following her for 45 minutes.

Holly Newton was left with 36 knife injuries after an attack in the Priestpopple area of Hexham, Northumberland, in January last year.

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named because of his age, admitted a charge of manslaughter but denied murder claiming his mind went blank that day and he had only intended to take his own life.

A 16-year-old boy who was with Holly at the time of the attack tried to help her and was also stabbed.

The 17-year-old, who was also found guilty of wounding with intent at Newcastle Crown Court, claimed he could not remember stabbing Holly, or the boy who came to her aid.

Holly was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, after the attack but could not be saved.

The 16-year-old boy, who was also taken to hospital, suffered injuries to his shoulder, arm, and thigh which needed surgery.

Holly's mother had been so concerned that day that she contacted police about the defendant, who was known to her daughter. It was agreed Holly should not leave school if the youth was outside, jurors were told.

For around 45 minutes, he followed Holly around the town centre as she visited shops with friends before attacking her.

Holly had told a friend just hours before the stabbing that the youth was "basically stalking her", jurors heard.

Two teenagers arrested after 13-year-old boy stabbed to death in Oldbury

Two teenagers have been arrested after a 13-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Oldbury.

West Midlands Police said the teenagers were held on Sunday in connection with the fatal stabbing in Lovett Avenue on Thursday and are being questioned in custody.

The force said the family of the 13-year-old boy have been informed about the arrests, adding "our thoughts remain with them at this devastating time".

Officers were called at 4pm on Thursday to a home on Lovett Avenue.

Chief Superintendent Kim Madill said it was a "truly sad and tragic incident", adding that paramedics "worked in vain to try to save his young life".

In a statement given on Friday, she added: "We have a team of detectives investigating exactly what happened, and we are following active lines of inquiry to find the suspects.

"We know that the incident took place inside his home, and I would appeal to anyone who has information to come forward."

Resident Jacqueline Burgher told Sky News she was "in shock" at the stabbing.

"It's a child," she said. "It's a life. A life is worth something. I don't know how they [family] must be feeling. I'm in shock, I'm dismayed."

Man who admitted rape and murder of woman he stabbed 60 times should be freed, Parole Board says

A man who admitted the rape and murder of a woman he stabbed 60 times during sex 27 years ago should be freed from prison, the Parole Board has said.

Steven Ling was jailed for life in December 1998 after admitting an attack on Joanne Tulip, 29, in Stamfordham, Northumberland.

He has been recommended for release following his fifth parole hearing.

Ms Tulip's mother Doreen Soulsby said she was "absolutely appalled and disgusted" by the Parole Board's recommendation.

She said: "That man committed horrific offences against my daughter and yet is deemed to not be a high risk, and is safe to be released from prison. It's outrageous."

Ms Soulsby said she was very concerned that Ling, now 49, will pursue relationships with women when he is released, having missed out on socialising with the opposite sex while in prison.

She said: "How can the Parole Board believe this man doesn't pose a danger to society when he took my daughter away from her family by committing the most brutal and sadistic crimes?

"Ling needs to stay locked up behind bars - he is a danger to all women and girls."

The recommended decision to release Ling into the community was, she said "a betrayal to not only Joanne's family but to the families of other victims in similar situations".

She urged ministers to block the recommendation, saying: "They must do everything they can to ensure women and girls are kept safe from this sadistic man."

Transport Secretary Louise Haigh said: "I know the justice secretary is considering whether that decision can be appealed and whether it can be reconsidered, whether she can request for the parole board to reconsider it, but it is an independent parole board."

Ling has since admitted committing several acts of indecent exposure before he murdered Ms Tulip and for which he was not caught and his behaviour in prison "has largely been exemplary", the board said.

A charge of rape was left on file during the original court case, so he is not a convicted sex offender, but in its ruling, the Parole Board stated: "Mr Ling has always accepted that he raped the victim."

His vicious murder of Ms Tulip on Christmas Day 1997 was inspired by sadism, the sentencing judge said back in 1998.

Jailing him for life at Newcastle Crown Court, Mr Justice Potts told Ling he "inflicted appalling injuries on (Ms Tulip) while you were having sexual relations with her".

The judge said he was satisfied Ling was partly motivated by "an aspiration of sadism", telling him he would "never be released so long as it is thought you constitute a danger to women".

Ling, who was 23 at the time of the murder, was handed a minimum term of 20 years which was reduced to 18 years by the High Court.

Nazi-obsessed Callum Parslow guilty of attempted murder after stabbing asylum seeker at Worcestershire hotel

A knifeman with Hitler's signature tattooed on his arm has been found guilty of attempted murder after stabbing an asylum seeker in the chest and hand.

Callum Ulysses Parslow, 31, attacked the man at a hotel in Worcestershire on 2 April as a "protest" against small boat crossings.

Nazi-obsessed Parslow admitted wounding - using a £770 knife bought online - and said he went to stab "one of the Channel migrants" because he was "angry and frustrated".

He tried to publish a "terrorist manifesto" on social media as police closed in and claimed he "just did my duty to England" by attempting to "exterminate" his victim.

Nahom Hagos, from Eritrea in East Africa, was eating in the conservatory of the Pear Tree Inn at Hindlip, near Worcester, when he was attacked.

The 25-year-old victim said it was a "miracle" he survived.

After trying to kill Mr Hagos, Parslow ran towards a canal and was spotted with what appeared to be blood on his hands, Leicester Crown Court heard.

The court was told he tried to post the manifesto on X as police closed in, tagging Tommy Robinson and politicians including Nigel Farage, Suella Braverman and Sir Keir Starmer.

However, it failed to send as he copied in too many people.

Others on his list included Laurence Fox, Lee Anderson, Boris Johnson, Donald Trump and various news organisations.

Blood which contained a DNA profile matching that of Mr Hagos was found on the blade of the knife abandoned by Parslow.

'Nurse' stabbed at hospital A&E department - man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

A woman has suffered life-changing injuries after being stabbed by a member of the public at the accident and emergency department where she was working.

The victim - believed to be a nurse in her 50s - was attacked at Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester, where she is now being treated.

It is understood she was injured with a bladed article or a sharp instrument - and not by a knife.

Officers were called at 11.30pm on Saturday.

A 37-year-old man is in custody after being "swiftly arrested at the scene" on suspicion of attempted murder, Greater Manchester Police said.

Detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and say there is no threat to the wider public.

Staff are "incredibly shocked", said Heather Caudle, chief nursing officer at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.

They are "saddened by last night's incident and our focus is on supporting the colleague involved and their family", she added.

"Our thoughts are also with colleagues and patients who were there at the time of the incident and for whom this has been distressing and frightening.

"All services at Royal Oldham Hospital remain open."

Jim McMahon, the Labour MP for the area, described it as a "senseless attack".

He posted on Facebook: "We are all shocked at the senseless attack on a nurse in the A&E department of the Royal Oldham Hospital.

"Our thoughts are with the nurse, family and friends, as we wish a full recovery."

Detective Sergeant Craig Roters said it was a "serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition".

The victim's family and colleagues will be supported, he added.

The local community can expect to see an "increase in police presence" while enquiries are carried out, Mr Roters said.

"We know that news of this nature will come as a shock, and if you have any concerns or anything you would like to share, please speak to [officers]."

Nazi-obsessed terrorist Callum Parslow jailed after trying to murder asylum seeker at Worcestershire hotel

A Nazi-obsessed man who tried to stab an asylum seeker to death has been jailed.

Callum Parslow was handed a life sentence and will serve a minimum of 22 years and eight months in prison after he attacked a man at a hotel in Worcestershire on 2 April last year, as a "protest" against small boat crossings.

The 32-year-old has Hitler's signature tattooed on his arm and used a £770 knife he had bought online to attack Nahom Hagos, who is from Eritrea, when he was eating in the conservatory of the Pear Tree Inn at Hindlip.

The victim, who was stabbed in the chest and hand, said it was a "miracle" he survived.

During sentencing, Mr Justice Dove told Parslow: "You committed a vicious and unprovoked assault on a complete stranger Nahom Hagos who suffered devastating injuries as a result of your violence."

Mr Justice Dove then said Parslow was "motivated by your adoption of a far-right neo-Nazi mindset which fuelled your warped, violent and racist views," and added: "This was undoubtedly a terrorist attack."

Leicester Crown Court heard at the time that Mr Hagos, who used to live at the hotel, was visiting a friend and was stabbed after Parslow asked him for directions to the toilet.

CCTV from the scene showed Mr Hagos fleeing onto a car park and being chased by Parslow. He was able to run back into the main reception area, where the hotel manager locked the front door.

Parslow later re-entered through another door apparently searching for further victims, the court heard.

The hotel manager and a builder used a van to take Mr Hagos to hospital in Worcester, as they felt he was losing too much blood, where he was found to have an 8cm-long wound which had not penetrated any of his vital organs.

After trying to kill Mr Hagos, Parslow ran towards a canal and was spotted with what appeared to be blood on his hands.

Officers found blood containing a DNA profile matching that of the victim on the blade of the knife abandoned by Parslow.

Failed manifesto post

After the stabbing and as police closed in, Parslow tried to post a "terrorist manifesto" on X, tagging Tommy Robinson and politicians including Nigel Farage, Suella Braverman and Sir Keir Starmer.

He wrote that he "just did my duty to England" and had tried to "exterminate" Mr Hagos. However, it failed to send as he copied in too many people.

Others on his list included Laurence Fox, Lee Anderson, Boris Johnson, Donald Trump and various news organisations.

Nazi memorabilia at bedsit

During the trial last October, the court heard an axe, metal baseball bat and a second knife were found at Parslow's bedsit in Bromyard Terrace in Worcester.

Police also discovered a swastika armband, a Nazi-era medallion and copies of Hitler's book Mein Kampf.

Jurors were also told Parslow had Hitler's signature tattooed on his arm "in order to demonstrate his affiliation to the ideals of the leader of the German Nazi party".

He also pleaded guilty to an unconnected sexual offence and two charges of sending electronic communications with intent to cause distress and anxiety at the time.

'The pain feels unbearable'

Mr Hagos told the court in an impact statement he continues to feel "excruciating pain" in his hand after the attack by Parslow.

Read out by the prosecution on Friday, he said: "The pain is unbearable and keeps me awake all night long.

"The pain feels like an electric shock going through my hand and I now have insomnia."

He then said he had been "living and pursuing a happy life before the incident," but added: "I feel lonely and don't feel safe on the street.

"My life has been turned upside down."

Birmingham stabbing: Boy, 12, knifed to death as boy, 14, arrested in murder probe

A 12-year-old boy has been stabbed to death in Birmingham as a 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of his murder.

The victim was found with serious injuries near Scribers Lane, Hall Green in the south-east of the city at around 3pm on Tuesday, and later died of his wounds in hospital.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said the victim’s family had been informed and they were being supported by specialist officers.

Detectives with the force are appealing for any information which could help in the murder investigation.

Detective Inspector Joe Davenport earlier said: “We’re urgently reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses as we work to understand what happened and why, and who was responsible.

“If you were in the area at the time and saw what happened, or think you may have captured any part of what happened on dashcam or mobile phone, it’s vital you get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

Kyle Clifford pleads guilty to murders of racing commentator's wife and daughters

A man has pleaded guilty to murdering the wife and two daughters of racing commentator John Hunt in a crossbow attack.

Kyle Clifford, 26, from Enfield, was accused of stabbing Carol Hunt, 61, to death and fatally shooting Louise, 25, and Hannah Hunt, 28, with a crossbow at their family home in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on 9 July last year.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of an offensive weapon, alongside the murder charges. He denied one count of rape and will face a trial for this charge later in the year.

Clifford had tied the arms and ankles of his former partner, Louise, with duct tape before he shot her through the chest with a crossbow bolt.

Her sister, Hannah, was found in the main doorway of the house with a crossbow bolt to the chest. She was still alive when police arrived at the property, having managed to call the emergency services, telling officers she feared she was going to die.

Their mother, Carol, sustained significant stab wounds to her knee, hands, back and torso after Clifford attacked her with a 10in butcher's knife.

Following the deaths, Sky Sports and BBC racing commentator Mr Hunt said the devastation he and his surviving daughter Amy feel "cannot be put into words".

Clifford, a former member of the military, was found injured in Lavender Hill Cemetery in Enfield. He had shot himself in the chest with the crossbow.

Following the attacks, the Home Office said Home Secretary Yvette Cooper was urgently considering whether tougher crossbow laws were needed. But in the King's Speech, which took place just days later, no proposal for action on the weapon was mentioned.

The previous government looked at bringing in firearms licensing-style rules in the wake of an attempt to kill the late Queen with a crossbow.

There is currently no registration system for owning a crossbow, but it is illegal for anyone under 18 to buy or own one, and carrying one in public without reasonable excuse can be punished by up to four years in prison.

Boy, 15, dies after being stabbed at school

A 15-year-old boy has died after being stabbed at a school in Sheffield, police have said.

The boy, named locally as Harvey Willgoose, was injured at All Saints Catholic High School, in Granville Road in the city, at about 12:17 GMT.

Police and paramedics were called but the teenager died a short time later.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody, South Yorkshire Police said.

Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield told a press conference the force was working "at pace to build a full picture of what had happened and how this tragedy unfolded".

"We urge you to be mindful that there are loved ones at the centre of this," she added.

All Saints head teacher Sean Pender had sent a message to parents on 29 January about a lockdown at the site.

In it, he said the action was due to "threatening behaviour between a small number of students".

ACC Butterfield was asked during the news conference about the reports but the officer said she could not share any information relating to it.

She concluded the press conference by urging people to avoid speculation and the sharing of content online "which could be distressing to them [the family] and detrimental to our investigation".

A number of floral tributes and messages have been left outside the school this evening.

One of the messages described the teenager as someone who was "the life of a party" who "brought joy and laughter to everyone who knew him".

It adds that his "bubbly personality was contagious".

"I'll never forget all the moments, all the laughs. You'll be missed by so many," it said.

A teenager who said he knew the 15-year-old also left a bunch of flowers outside the school.

The 17-year-old, who studies at a local college, heard the news through friends and said the boy who died was a fan of Sheffield United.

He said: "I'm a bit upset to be honest, it came as such a shock.

"He seemed quite a happy guy and a nice guy to be around."

One All Saints pupil said the victim had been a "lovely lad".

"He would make your day better hearing him down that hallway. You didn't have to personally know him to be upset," the 17-year-old said.

"Teachers loved him, students loved him, everyone loved him.

"I've been at the school for seven years now and nothing like this has ever, ever happened."

The school was last inspected by Ofsted in October 2023 and was rated as Good overall, with inspectors saying the school had a "strong ethos of warmth and respect".

A number of parents had arrived at the school to collect their children earlier.

One told the BBC they were keen to get their youngster home after hearing a variety of rumours about what had happened, adding the "kids were getting panicked".

According to the local newspaper The Star, the school's head teacher sent a message to parents on Monday.

He said it was with "shock and sorrow" that he had to tell people a pupil had been fatally stabbed.

He also said the school would be closed on Tuesday.

Amaan Ahmed, who manages the Castle Asian Community Trust near the school, said the area was no stranger to knife crime.

The organisation works with young people to help them stay away from knives.

He feared the boy's death would leave parents wondering if they should send their children back to school.

"If it can happen in a public place like a school, people will be worried about going to the park I think too," he added.

'Serious questions'

Asked about the incident while on a trip to Brussels, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said his first thoughts "as a father" were with the victim's family.

"The terrible stabbing in Sheffield is one where I think the whole country would want to reach out to the family, to the friends, to the school, the entire community in their grief and mourn with them," he said.

Louise Haigh, the MP for Sheffield Heeley, said the news was "horrific" and her thoughts were with all affected.

"Serious questions will have to be answered about how this could have happened", she said, adding she will work with the school, police and the council "to make sure they are".

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said she was "devastated" by the boy's death.

She added: "We are in contact with the school and council to offer support."

In an emotional statement education minister Catherine McKinnell told the Commons: "My heart goes out to his family, friends and the entire school community at this very distressing time."

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said he had spoken with Lauren Poultney, the county's chief constable, and offered her his full support.

"This morning a teenage boy went to school like thousands of others across South Yorkshire but won't come home; a young man who was a member of our community, with his whole life ahead of him," he said.

Sheffield-based Anthony Olaseinde is an anti knife crime campaigner for the charity Always an Alternative and said the incident was "heart-breaking".

"Something like this should not happen," he said.

He said the charity had held sessions at All Saints and worked with young people at the school.

"I've been in the school mentoring with them," he said.

"We did conflict management sessions. We made a short film raising awareness about knife crime with young people at the school.

"The young people were really engaged and positive."

He called for better support and resources for organisations working with young people.

Student killed and three injured in stabbing at French school

A student has been killed and three others were injured in a stabbing at a French private school.

A 15-year-old boy, said to be a fellow pupil, was arrested in connection with the attack after being overpowered by teachers at the scene before officers arrived, police said.

The suspect reportedly entered the grounds of Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides, in Nantes, western France, armed with at least one knife at around 12.30pm local time (11.30am UK time) on Thursday.

He then went to the second floor of the high school, where he attacked a teenage girl. She later died of her injuries, French television network BFMTV reported.

The suspect then went down to the first floor, where he attacked at least three other students before being overpowered, radio station Europe 1 said.

Local newspaper Ouest France said the attacker had been dressed all in black, and wore a helmet and balaclava.

Two knives, including a hunting knife, were reportedly recovered from the scene.

Students at the school revealed they had received an email from the suspect earlier in the day outlining unspecified grievances.

One of them, who did not want to be named, told BFMTV: "It's absolutely shocking. This is usually a very calm high school, and there have never been any problems of this type, even minor ones."
