Tim Paine urged his Australia players to move on from the crushing nature of their defeat in the third Test.

Having been flayed to all parts of Headingley by Ben Stokes amid one of the most astonishing 10th-wicket partnerships in Test history, Paine cut a remarkably level-headed figure in the aftermath as he looked to convey a message of calm.

The Australia captain, whose side missed a chance to retain the Ashes with two Tests to play, insisted: “We don’t talk about emotion. You have got to stick to the facts and the facts are – like I said to the boys – we have been in a position to win every Test. So we are clearly doing something right.”

Paine had to haul Nathan Lyon off the ground at the end of the nerve-shredding match, the off-spinner having moments earlier fumbled the ball when, with England needing only two runs to win, he could have run out the No 11 Jack Leach.

“He’s a really important player in our side and I said to him that if our younger players see him dealing with it really quickly and moving on, they are going to do the same thing,” Paine explained.

Paine also refused to criticise the umpire Joel Wilson for turning down an lbw shout against Stokes the following delivery, despite Hawk-Eye showing it was out.

Having wasted his side’s last review the previous over when Pat Cummins wrongly persuaded him that an lbw shout against Leach had pitched in line, he simply had to accept it.

Paine said: “I saw it live. I thought it was out. I don’t need to see it again. I have no issue with it, I don’t think I’ve got a referral correct the whole series so I can’t sit here and bag the umpires.

“To sit down and single out an umpire is unnecessary, he is no different to everyone else, he is allowed to make mistakes.”

Such a magnanimous response is in keeping with Paine’s captaincy overall and it extended to Stokes also. He added: “I thought it was an amazing game of cricket, Ben Stokes was unbelievably good and it was one of the great Test innings.

“We finished up on the wrong side of it but in terms of an advertisement for Test cricket, I think that was bloody exciting. It was great to be involved in so I can only imagine what it was like to watch.”

Australia play a three-day tour game against Derbyshire from Thursday. As they lick their wounds, the good news is that Steve Smith will be back after a week-long concussion lay-off.

When we have endless technology why should umpires be making crucial errors? This is ridiculous.

Joel Wilson needs to be fired. When will umpires be held accountable?

Joe Wilson have been awful.I know umpires do make mistake but Wilson has a very high percentage of errors.Australia lost because of Wilson. There should be a points system for umpires to promote or relegate them to elite panel.

and when will captains be held accouuntable for their usage of drs?

What i find ridiculous is that eveyrone is after the umpire no one is talking about the review they made in the over beefore that, than the miss run out

Again another instance why I believe DRS should be taken out of the hands of the players. If goals can be checked simultaneously in football via VAR checks, why can the same not be done in cricket? Have the third umpire check all decisions at a first glance. If it is quite obviously a correct call then play should be able to resume without any delay, hopefully by the time the bowler is back to his mark. If he needs another look, the umpire can hold up play for a second look. At least it ensures the right decision is made and there will be no more instances of an opening batsmen taking away reviews for the rest of the team. Just my 2 cents.

How does Joel Wilson still get a gig?

Literally cost Australia a Test.

Umpiring standard is currently not that great. I hope ICC will do something about it.

Because reviews are safeguards and only in use because umpiring can be wrong. And umpiring should not decide the fate of matches.

It is ridiculous that the use of something which is meant to be a safeguard is what you think is important over something like umpiring which is the core of cricket. This is like trying to discuss why CCTVs were not working after a robbery when you find out that you left all the doors open while leaving your house

Smith being back will boost them. English batting is still very brittle and this pitch had really flattened out

That was one of the most difficult calls an umpire could be asked to make. He knew the fate of the match depended on his decision and he buckled under pressure. To give an lbw at that stage takes a LOT of balls and Joel had none.

If it was a one off mistake sure, but this is the same guy who just recorded the most over turned decisions in a test match in his last game, he is just atrocious.

Australia was burnt by its eagerness to call on DRS and a subsequent howler from umpire Joel Wilson in its stunning one-wicket loss to a Ben Stokes-inspired England at Headingley.

Captain Tim Paine called for the most optimistic of reviews on an lbw appeal against Jack Leach when England needed nine runs to win only for ball tracking to confirm it pitched well outside leg. In the very next over Australia paid a heavy price for wasting its last review, with Nathan Lyon trapping Ben Stokes in front only for umpire Wilson to turn down the appeal.

For Border, it was an eventuality waiting to happen for an Australian team that has used the system poorly all series.

“The one time where the review was there to be taken for the right reason and to win the Test match, we’ve run out of reviews because of stupidity earlier on,” Border told foxsports.com.au. “They thought at this stage we’ll just go for it because there’s only seven or eight runs to go.

“That’s not what it’s designed for and it’s come back to bite us badly. Our use of the review system has been appalling in this series in particular.”

Australia is none from nine with its reviews while bowling this series. While Border is critical of Tim Paine’s poor use of the system, he believes the tourists have not been helped by the proficiency of umpiring errors across the first three Tests. While things have improved since 15 umpiring errors where made in the first match, the officiating has still left plenty to be desired.

“If the umpiring is spot on and they know what’s out and not out, then the reviews don’t matter as much,” he said. “They’re just getting so many decisions incorrect so the players are now second guessing them.

“Surely there are better umpires out there. I know it’s a difficult job, but some of the decisions that have been made over the series have been terrible. Both sides have suffered. The umpiring standard has been way below what you’d expect.”

The former Australia captain added his voice to those calling for the requirement of neutral umpires to be removed, allowing the best officials to handle marquee series.

“You have your four best umpires and if they are four Englishmen or four Aussies, so be it, that’s what you get.

“I feel sorry for Joel Wilson, he’s just had an absolute shocker. He’s got to be demoted going forward and then seen whether he can work his way back into the Test umpiring panel.

“It’s got to be like a cricketer who has lost form, ‘you’re out of the side mate and you’ve got to do good things to get back in.’”

South African official Marais Erasmus is set to umpire the next two Tests, with Sri Lanka’s Kumar Dharmasena joining him for the fourth and his compatriot Ruchira Palliyaguruge the fifth.

First off, Australia only have themselves to blame for wasting their review on a ball that wasn't even pitching in line one over prior. What's worse is that Cummins knew and communicated this to Paine but Paine still in his inexperience as captain and out of desperation took the review and sure enough the decision came back to haunt him.

Secondly, Joel Wilson deserves to be kicked off the elite panel like S. Ravi because this is not the first time he has made such errors. This one is still forgivable. I have seen him making howlers consistently
for a couple of years now. The guy is not fit to be on an elite panel umpire and ICC should recognize this already.

The Aussies bowled England out for 67 in the first innings, and then they had England 9 wickets down in the second innings and more runs than that whole first dig total (70+) to play with - and they still lost.

Hilarious given the above that anyone should blame the Aussies’ abject failure to win the Test match on one umpiring decision.

Root and Bairstow were both wrongly given out by the umpires early in their respective second innings and these had to be overturned on review. I bet the Aussies would have happily taken both of those wickets if they had stood.

I will say Ashes. Can't see aus winning series from here.

Based on what?
Eng is just about root/stokes or bust..
Roy/buttler are outright bottlers in test cricket
Woaked and broad have lost touch in batting
Denly at best is average

And aussies are getting thier test champ back next game.

If anything ashes is as alive as it can be unless eng replaces some dead weight and debutants fire right away

Aussies sucked after 9 wickets but its also true if umpire had given stokes out when 2 runs required ,aussies still would have won by 1 run so yeh u can understand why people are upset..

Even you would be upset if pakistan was in place of aus.

But what people gotto realise is "S#it happens" ,just look at entertainment we all got

it wasnt a great decision but to be completely honest in real time it looks like it is going down leg
anyone who thinks it looked plumb is using benefit of replay....
I 100% thought it hit the front leg when he was sweeping down leg and hence would miss leg stump or be marginal. Yes umpire made mistake but lets be honest its aussies fault for ridiculous drs....but then again if they hadnt taken drs the set of events would all change as timings would change basically the butterfly effect....and no one knows if that chance would still be there....

Australians seething but cant say much as Paine messed up the review.

A game worth millions, fans sitting all day to watch entertaining cricket then a decision costs a team a match. Historically it was so frustrating but things have improved where there is more right decisions due to technology. I would have take 2 minutes to check that decision and Aus would be celebrating.

Having two or one review per team doesn't get away from the fact after teams use them we are back to relying on umpires like Wilson. Every decision needs to be checked by third competent umpire. Umpires call should be taken away and the decisions given as out or not out. A third party could ensure technology is not being fiddled as has happened I believe on occasion.

Joel wilson decisions are not based on what he sees. England had review left. They would have taken it if he had given him out wrongly. But he chose not to give knowing fully well Australia don't have a review left.

They should allocate 20 reviews for a 5 test series instead of 2 per innings. They can use any which way they want.

This, it kinda stinks as he knew England could have reviewed it if he had given Stokes out lbw? Then technology would have made the right decision. It's either gross incompetence by Wilson or something more corrupt.

Yeah that's what makes it terrible, England had reviews left so they would have challenged it. Aus were out and that looked really good live. It looks like he chickened out live and decided to make no decision given his performance in the first match.

He evidently thought it was not out. He shouldn't be changing that based on whether Australia have used their reviews poorly or not.

Joel Wilson is simply a poor umpire. A truly embarrassing number of his decisions have been overturned in this series. Aileen Dar also had a poor game earlier in the series. I guess umpires are like batsman — they have periods when they are out of form and eventually all lose their eye and confidence.
Hard to imagine he is one of the so-called “elite” umpires

Live it didn’t look stone dead, looked slightly leg side. Hindsight versus that pressure moment are two very different things.

Obviously turned out to be a wrong decision on the replay but Wilson has made many worse live calls that were blatantly incorrect imo.

He evidently thought it was not out. He shouldn't be changing that based on whether Australia have used their reviews poorly or not.

In an ideal world yes, you are right. But knowing the quality of umpires around, its important to be practical and do things which could lead to right outcomes.

However bad Wilson is, that shout for LBW did not look stone cold out at first sight.
Even in replays there was doubt. Even painting felt it may hit first pad first and ball could be sliding down.

Aussies only have themselves to blame

Aussies lost it when Pat Cummins and Paine took the review in the previous over, which was not even a gamble to become rich but it was a clear case of frittering away your last cent since you think its all over. It was just so un-Australian thing to do. Steve Waugh's team used to fight until the last ball because they always believed that luck could turn their way on the last ball or on the last run. On the other hand, Paine thought it was all over even when 5 runs were needed and to me that's where Australians lost it.

Can't blame it all on umpires. They wasted a review, missed an easy run out, missed some chances (albeit difficult)

In an ideal world yes, you are right. But knowing the quality of umpires around, its important to be practical and do things which could lead to right outcomes.

But it won't have been a pragmatic decision at all knowing the DRS protocols, far from it. Imagine the uproar if Wilson had given that out and the ball was clipping the outside half of leg-stump by a millimetre. There are too many variables to consider as an umpire and if he thought the ball was sliding down, he made the right decision in that moment. The number of reviews remaining for either team was utterly irrelevant.

Test captain Tim Paine says Australia are exploring ways to fine tune their decision review system (DRS) referral process after a costly mistake in the late stages of the third Ashes Test.

Paine, who has been rested for the three-day tour match against Derbyshire starting on Thursday, has taken responsibility for the now-infamous blunder at Headingley.

The Tasmanian unsuccessfully used Australia's last review on a leg-side lbw shout against tailender Jack Leach.

It left them high and dry when Joel Wilson turned down Nathan Lyon's appeal on Ben Stokes, with DRS indicating the English match-winner would have been given out on review – two runs shy of victory.

Australia, unlike many other teams, use a two-man approach to discuss potential referrals as Paine doubles as captain and wicketkeeper.

That system has produced the worst DRS success rate of the nine Test nations since Paine's first full match at the helm in Johannesburg last year.

Paine has been unsuccessful in 48 of his 61, or 78.69 per cent, of his reviews, per BBC cricket statistician Andrew Samson.

The Aussie skipper admits he has to do better and has gone back to the drawing board to improve his strike rate.

"We're trying our best to come up with a system that's better," Paine told SEN on Thursday.

"Where we can gather information on what different people are seeing on the field at the time and in that 15 seconds, try and make a better decision than what we have been.

Australia's top-order batsmen have been encouraged to go for reviews in the final two Ashes Tests as the tourists seek to improve their Decision Review System (DRS) record.

Tim Paine has earned widespread praise for his leadership since replacing Steve Smith as captain in the aftermath of the Cape Town scandal.

But Australia's ineffective use of the DRS under Paine has been a concern, especially during the current five-Test series when England have repeatedly used referrals to overturn on-field decisions.

Paine and coach Justin Langer have both acknowledged there is room for improvement, as have vice-captains Pat Cummins and Travis Head.

Paine's referral of Cummins' optimistic lbw shout in Leeds last week was one of many ‘what if’ moments in the dramatic final hour of the third Test.

It robbed Australia of their final review, which could have been used to secure a one-run victory by overturning a not-out verdict from Joel Wilson soon after.

Australia's leaders have discussed how best to approach the DRS during the past week, as was the case after a series-opening victory.

In the case of batting innings, the solution agreed upon after the Edgbaston triumph was simple and remains in place.

"Just use it," Cummins told AAP.

"Sometimes batsmen are scared to use one. They don't want to leave their mate down the other end stranded without a review.

"So we're just trying; if you're a top-order batsman and you have half a feeling you might not be out, then just use it.

"When we're bowling, it's a really tough one ... we had a bit of a chat about maybe changing some of the processes. Obviously we need to improve."

Part of Australia's problem is that Paine is both wicketkeeper and captain, whereas England skipper Joe Root will always have gloveman Jonny Bairstow to turn to for a second opinion when a bowler is adamant something is out.

Cummins and Paine both felt last week's pivotal lbw shout was not out but for different reasons, which caused enough doubt for the desperate captain to roll the dice.

"As a keeper, sometimes you can be a bit blinded. I know as a bowler I always find it hard to judge because my head is normally facing extra cover when I release the ball," Cummins said.

"It's a conversation between the keeper and bowler then you'll normally see someone square of the wicket give a gauge on height for lbws.

"If someone feels like they've got something to add, first slip or whatever, they'll normally speak up. Painey's decision is final.

"But if an umpire standing dead in front isn't 100 per cent certain, it's going to be hard for us to be."

I will say Ashes. Can't see aus winning series from here.

Australia will retain the Ashes. They only have to win one test out of two, or draw them both. OT will be a draw due to rain. Starc is back, which will make Lyon more effective too.

Australia won just eight of 35 DRS calls in the Ashes. They’ve simplified their approach

Australia have revamped their decision review system strategy in a bid to simplify the process and limit the amount of voices involved in making a call.

Australia’s inability to get their referrals right became a key part the Ashes, where they regularly failed to overturn decisions or didn’t challenge incorrect ones.

Never was that more blatant than in the nail-biting third Test loss at Headingley, where a review was wasted on a Pat Cummins lbw shout.

Moments later, Nathan Lyon couldn’t review a plum lbw decision that would have gifted the game to Australia before Ben Stokes finished England’s one-wicket victory.

Under the new plan, only the bowler and wicketkeeper Tim Paine will have a proper say on reviewing caught behinds, while in lbw appeals the point fielder will also be used.

“We’re just keeping it very simple. We’re trying to get the bowler and keeper’s (thoughts), obviously,” quick Josh Hazlewood said.

“And height is a big issue in Brisbane with the lbws, so we’re trying to get someone from point to have a quick chat.

“Keep it simple. Why didn’t the umpire give it out? At least we have a process then and can judge ourselves if we are getting better or worse.

“If someone hears something out of the blue, they can always come in and yell it out if it’s very clear. But just trying to restrict it to those three people.”

Australia’s new process passed its first test on Thursday, with the hosts reluctant to overuse the system as they rolled through Pakistan for 240 at the Gabba.

Only once was it called upon, with Mitchell Starc getting Shaheen Shah Afridi caught behind on referral late on the opening day of the series.

It comes after Australia used the review system 35 times in the Ashes either while batting or fielding, for just eight decisions in their favour.
