There is no country as safe as India: Virender Sehwag on Uzma Ahmed’s return from Pakistan

A day after the Indian woman, Uzma Ahmed who alleged she was forced to marry a Pakistani man during her visit to the country, returned to India, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag said ‘there is no country as safe as India.

There is no country as safe as India. Is desh ki mitti ki baat hi alag hai. Best wishes to #Uzma &welcome back to the most incredible country pic.twitter.com/mRRRfslHv0
— Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) May 25, 2017

Uzma who returned to the country on Thursday, crossed the Wagah Border near Amritsar. She has accused Tahir Ali, whom she reportedly met in Malaysia and fell in love with, of forcing her into marrying him in Pakistan on May 3.
“Pakistan is a ‘maut ka kuan’. I have seen women who go there after arranged marriages. They are miserable and live in terrible conditions. There are two, three, even four wives in every house.” She thanked External Affairs Minister Swaraj Swaraj, Indian mission officials and other staffers for ensuring her return.
Uzma was allowed by the Islamabad High Court Wednesday to return to India. She had approached the court, seeking its direction after her husband “seized” her immigration papers and refused to return them.

This Girl has been giving over the top statements against Life in Pakistan to appease the masses in India. Calls Pakistan a deaths trap and claims that every Man in Pakistan has 4 Wives. :))

Some celebrities like Sehwag and other Indian politician's have jumped in to take this opportunity to further take digs at Pakistan and sing songs of Mera Bharat Mahaan.

The Girl herself has become a celebrity in no time and is milking the most of her newly found fame by saying what her Nation wants to hear.

Yes India is very safe. Just look at how Kashmiris are being treated in India or the daily Mob lynchings for eating beef.

Shewag sometimes acts like Pakistanis. Has he ever heard about coward racist mobs beating up Africans and random civilians?

Did this girl pull a stunt to cash in on the right wing mindset?

Violent attacks on religious minorities in India averaged one attack per day last year, a rising number that has led a coalition of US Congress members to plead with India's leaders to condemn the violence.

According to the Catholic Secular Forum, attacks rose more than 20 percent from 2014 to 2015. There have been 36 attacks on Christians so far this year, ranging from churches being destroyed to priests, nuns, and parishioners being beaten, according to the Christian human rights group International Christian Concern (ICC), as well as four murders of Muslim men by Hindu mobs over their consumption of beef.

Christian rights groups monitoring the violence say the attacks have coincided with a strong rise in Hindu nationalism, which encompasses a broad spectrum of Indian political movements, but centers around the idea that Hindu traditions and beliefs should serve as a guide for the state and its citizens. The more extreme Hindu nationalists are accused of mounting the attacks.

The extremists have been ignored, if not outright condoned, by the country's prime minister, Narendra Modi, and ruling party, the Indian People's Party, which both came to power amid the rising nationalist tide.

"It's a radical Hindu ideology," said William Stark, an expert in South Asia with ICC. "If you see someone Muslim or Christian, they're following a foreign faith, and they're defiling India because they're following a foreign faith."

Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia Director of Human Rights Watch, said the attacks were being carried out by "vigilante groups" who claim to be supporters of the ruling party. They have taken up various courses of action, including trying to ban the consumption of beef nationally and trying to convert Christians to Hinduism, he said.

"Religious minorities, particularly Christians and Muslims, are feeling increasingly vulnerable," Ganguly said.

About 80 percent of India's population of 1.3 billion people are Hindu, Stark said, followed by about 12 percent Muslim, two to three percent Christian, and under two percent Sikh. There are about 25 million Christians in the country currently, but there's been an increase in conversion among those of the lowest social class, once known in Indian culture as the "untouchable" caste, for whom Christianity is appealing, he said.

"You're in a religion that for thousands of years said you're something below human, and then a faith comes that says everybody is created equal, that's a very attractive message," he said.

In addition to violent attacks, some towns and regions have passed discriminatory laws barring Christians, Muslims, and Sikhs from living inside village borders, accessing public utilities like water wells, or farming nearby lands, Stark said. He called the laws "social boycotts."

34 members of the US Congress, including eight senators and 26 representatives from both parties sent a letter to Modi in February expressing their "grave concerns about the increasing intolerance and violence members of India's religious minority communities experience."

"We urge your government to take immediate steps to ensure that the fundamental rights of religious minorities are protected and that the perpetrators of violence are held to account," they wrote.

Stark described an incident earlier this month in which a Pentecostal church was overrun by a mob during church services. Some of the 60 Christians praying inside were beaten, while the church, its Bibles, and furniture were broken and vandalized.

The persecution is "very much a regional issue," David Curry, CEO of the Christian group Open Doors, which monitors persecution of Christians around the world, pointed out. It is mainly concentrated in the southern region of India.

"You've got, just like in other religions, an extremist group that believes their religion should be an enforced national faith, and there are those forces within India, yet there are also people who want to have freedom of religious expression," he said.

The 15-Year-Old Girl Who Was Brutally Raped and Burned in India Has Died

"It could be that some of these extremists feel emboldened because they feel perhaps that they have somebody who won't pursue them," Curry said of Modi's government. "We haven't seen Mr. Modi step out and protect these Christians and we think he should. It's a very dangerous thing if he continues to let these kinds of attacks go unanswered. "

The government has remained "eerily silent," Stark said, leaving religious minority members feeling vulnerable. The foreign minister responded to Congress's letter by calling the attacks "an aberration," and a recent scheduled visit by the International Commission for Religious Freedom was canceled when India suddenly denied the group its visas, Stark said. The government's lack of action amounts to tacit approval and sends a signal of impunity toward those perpetrating the attacks, he said.

That is a blatant lie.We all know about the recent rise in mob lynchings in India and also the current violence in Kashmir

That is a blatant lie.We all know about the recent rise in mob lynchings in India and also the current violence in Kashmir

To be fair, those are targeted lynchings so at least there isn't any collateral damage like there would be with random bombings. On that score, India is a lot safer than Pakistan and we have to give them their due. In Pakistan there seems to be mysterious bomb blasts every month, the last one in India was some time ago and they certainly made the most of it.

Sehwag calls his country safe but Pakistanis have a problem.Wonder why?

Uzma had to go to Indian embassy and Islamabad high court to get her documents to return to India. But she is ofcourse playing to the galleries.

NEW DELHI, May 25 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - An Indian woman who says she was drugged, kidnapped and forced to marry a Pakistani man at gunpoint returned to India on Thursday amid much media fanfare and as tensions between the two South Asian neighbours rise. Uzma, whose family name cannot be given for legal reasons, said she met the Pakistani national in Malaysia and decided to travel to Pakistan on May 1 after he invited her to visit.

But when she arrived she said the man forced her to sign a marriage contract at gunpoint and that she suffered physical and emotional violence for five days until she managed to go to the Indian High Commision in Islamabad where she was given refuge.

"I went to Pakistan just for a visit. But the situation changed so quickly that I didn't even realise when (he) gave me sleeping pills. It was a kidnapping," Uzma, who is in her twenties, told a news conference.

"He tortured me in every way," said Uzma, who is from New Delhi.

Uzma stayed in a village in the northwest district of Buner and said other foreign women duped into forced marriage by Pakistani men working in Malaysia were also there. She did not provide any further details.

According to local media reports, the man denies the allegations.

Indian High Commission officials said they filed a petition in court seeking permission for Uzma to return to India. The court granted permission on Wednesday.

The incident comes amid increasing tension between India and Pakistan who have in recent weeks been trading accusations over cease-fire violations along their disputed border.

Both countries have also been at odds over an Indian national, Kulbhushan Jadhav, who Pakistan has sentenced to death on charges of spying. India has taken the case to the International Court of Justice.

India's Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj, who has been leading efforts to ensure the woman's safe return to India over the last two weeks, welcomed her home and expressed thanks to Pakistan for assisting the Indian High Commission.

"I want to say this, regardless of whatever the relationship is between India and Pakistan today, if Uzma is here today, it is because of the help given by Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs," Sushma said at the news conference.

Sushma Swaraj giving credit to Pakistan for helping the Indian woman. Its not India vs Pakistan. It is the plight of a Indian woman duped by a Pakistani guy.

This is simply not true. A big fat lie. I have around 1500 people in my social circle who I know well from almost all backgrounds and ethnicity of Pakistan (elite, upper middle class , lower middle class , middle class, army walas, religious, liberals, from karachi , Islamabad, lahore, multan, faislabad, hyderbad, interior punjab, interior sindh, quetta, peshawar) and have hardly found people with 2 wives let alone 4 wives.

I wont call it generalization, this is a big lie on her part..

Wow, Bollywood just got it's script for a New Indo - Pakistan Movie. The Secular Indian Government secured the release of an Indian Muslim Girl who was being tortured in Pakistan, all the authorities in Pakistan were complicit in the crime but such was the might of Indian Government that they managed to get the girl back .

Title " Escape from Hell ".

Yeah agree with Sehwag, people migrate from US and Canada to India :))

May be the guy who duped her belongs to some kind of marriage mafia and all the men involved may have had multiple wives. She obviously did not travel the length and breadth of Pakistan. She was only telling what she saw in that small area where she was kept.

Not from the developed Western Nations.

But India's neighboring countries people do migrate to India (Legally or Illegally).

Well he said there is NO country as safe as India. He didn't specify whether he was talking about India's immediate neighbourhood.

Keep it civil people. Already, a dozen posts have been removed in this thread.

Absolute lie, in my family and friends circle in Pakistan, Australia, UK (hundreds of families), there is not one person who i know who has 2 wives let alone 3 ,4 and 5 this liar is talking about. There are some who divorced and married other people but even that is considered extremely bad.

Her story seems absolutely fake and lie that she was forced to marry this person at gun point, how on earth did she travel all the way to be held hostage and marry at gun point? Without being biased, i think she is a liar who realised she made a blunder and made this story up as an easy way out.

Westerners do not see India as a destination to settle in. Only a few thousands at best see India as a spiritual destination and try to settle in India.

Most migration is economic migration. India does not offer any goodies when it comes to money for Western people. Westerners are already pretty safe in their homeland.

I think it's pretty obvious to most people that the woman has a few screws loose and she needed this story to be accepted back in India. It doesn't tell us much other than India and it's stars remain incredibly small minded. I hope this mentality doesn't keep them back from keeping pace with China, but sadly it probably will.

She also said she was forced to marry how could you believe such a liar. Two marriages fine i have seen people even in india but 4 wives seriously this is a big FAT lie.

Marrying multiple women and then putting them in labor work for money is not a new concept. This way women can be used as money making machines as well as sex machines.

If someone or a group of people are into this marriage mafia, then these things occur.

This woman probably saw the worst of Pakistan.

People who think India is safe country watch crime patrol u will get the answer no country safe in this world

India figures third among the top 10 countries where highest number of rapes have taken place in 2010 while in cases of murder, the country comes second in 2012, Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said according to UN Crime Trends Survey 2010, the U.S. recorded 85,593 cases of rape in that year followed by Brazil with 41,180 rape cases.

A total of 22,172 rape cases were registered in India in 2010, he said.

The UN data said in the U.S., 27.3 rape cases were reported per lakh population, followed by 21.09 in Brazil and in case of India, there were 1.8 cases of rape per lakh population.

The United Kingdom has reported 15,892 cases of rape in 2010 (28.8 cases of rape in per lakh population) and in Mexico, there were 14,993 cases of rape (13.2 cases of rape in per lakh population).

France has reported 10,108 cases of rape, which is 16.2 cases of rape in per lakh population.

There were 7,724 cases of rape in Germany, 5,960 cases of rape in Sweden (63.5 cases of rape in every lakh population), 4,907 cases of rape in Russian Federation, 4,718 cases of rape in Philippines and 3,157 cases of rape in Colombia.

Among the murder cases, the UN report said the highest number of murder had taken place in Brazil (50,108) in 2012, followed by India (43,335).

A total of 33,817 cases of murder had taken place in Nigeria, 26,037 cases in Mexico, 18,586 cases in Congo, 16,259 in South Africa, 14,670 in Colombia and 13,846 cases of murder in Pakistan in 2012, the Minister said quoting the Global Study on Homicide, UNODC 2013.

Lol at the Indian here calling Pakistan a hellhole. At least I won't get murdered in my country for killing cows. India is arguably the worst place in the world for women. This chick is just spreading baseless crap

Mr. Sehwag, please tell all the indian patriots in the middleeast, europe and North America this. Crime rate in Canada will definitely go down if they follow Uzma's footsteps.

Got to agree with Sehwag, even though I don't rate him as a cricketer. India has given the concept of non violence to the world and is an oasis of peace in an otherwise volatile world. Those few indians who are violent are not true Indians. A real Indian always offers his other cheek, sometimes both.

Go to Indian news websites http://www.ndtv.com/ to see how safe India is with daily violent political protests, religious tension and major crimes going on. If Pak is maut ka koowa to her then India is rape ka koowa to me. At least Pak returned her back safe and sound. She is just telling the Indian media what they want to hear, thats all.

They are basically like biharis but rich. All the social backwardness but have an Audi or two.

I have noticed you mentioning about biharis quite a few times.

Im pretty sure Biharis dont need any kind of certificate from Bangladeshis who keep crawling to our country.

Evidence emerging in the case of Indian national Uzma, who alleged she was forcibly married at gunpoint, suggests her story doesn't add up. On Friday last week, 20-year-old Uzma took refuge inside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, alleging she was forced to marry Pakistani national Tahir Ali and subjected to physical and mental torture daily. But the evidence emerging in the case suggests there are gaping holes in Uzma's story.

Sehwag is absolutely right. Maybe he should send his wife or sister out in Delhi in the middle of the night on a public bus to show the world just how safe India is.

Read the whole article. In terms of per capita India is way down in the list.

I'm sorry did I miss a post where someone said Pakistan is the safest country in the world? Are you comparing the so called safest country in the world with Pakistan?

Sehwag said this to another Indian who had undergone a ordeal in another country.

Pakistanis should be the last ones talking about safety.

Yes, I'm sorry you are right. The country which has the third highest number of rape cases in the world and the second highest number of murders should be the only one allowed to talk about safety. No other country should speak about safety.

Lol, you will always be in denial.

It's not just the domestic rapes, but the fact foreigners have been targeted. Even a bus was used. They are not isolated incidents like you want to portray.

And you always come up with the same nonseical line "Pakistanis should be the last ones to talk about..." when responding to something you don't like.

Excuse me you are no one to tell us what we can't discuss.

It's a forum and it will be discussed, period. The fool Sehwag made a factually incorrect statement in every sense. Only a blind Indian nationalist would believe that nonsensical statement.

You can discuss all that you want and take out your frustrations. What difference will it make to Sehwag or India or Indians?

Why are you getting so worked up about all of this? Do you agree with Sehwag's statement that India is the safest country in the world? Even safer than Singapore, Malaysia or the UAE for example?

Its his belief for his country. Its insane for a foreigner to question it when they have no stake in it.Someone claimed on another thread that Canada is the best country in the world etc etc.I didnt question him,its his feeling his choice.Thats his liberty.

Do you really believe that the Pakistani narrative on India effects any Indian or vice versa?

:))Haha but we don't have to say the same for them since our country is one of the safest. They have nothing to be proud of their country. And as Brother big gamer said, our privileged class is even more safer. No privileged class is as safe is ours, it's tremendous. :))

If a Pakistani believes he is safest in his country, who is an Indian to question him?No One.

Point is, it was a stupid statement because clearly India is not the safest country in the world. Not even close. People found it funny that someone would even think that and hence they started replying here.

Nothing to get so worked up about.

Indian army can rape, abduct women: Kerala leader

Communist Party of India’s Kerala secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has sparked controversy after he claimed the Indian army could rape and abduct women if given additional powers and no one would question them.

India uses excessive repression in occupied Kashmir, reports Amnesty

“They [army] can do anything to anybody. If they see more than four people standing together, they can shoot them…They can take any woman and rape her, nobody has the right to question them. This is the state wherever the army is,” Balakrishnan said on Thursday.

The remarks by the Kerala leader came a day after India’s Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said the country’s armed forces have been given a free-hand to take decisions in “war-like situations.” He further added officers are not bound to consult members of Parliament and can do as they deem fit to counter terrorist forces.

Balakrishnan further added if the army is deployed in Kerala state’s Kannur, clashes between army and the people are bound to happen.

Indian army has long been accused of atrocities in Indian occupied Kashmir too. Repression in occupied Kashmir also featured prominently in Amnesty International’s 2016-17 report, claiming that the Indian authorities are using repressive laws to curb freedom of expression and silence critical voices

If a Pakistani believes he is safest in his country, who is an Indian to question him?No One.

Well as long as A Pakistani keeps it to himself no one will question him. But when he takes a dig at another country just like Shewag did, people will ask questions. Why is this a big deal for you anyways? Let people talk, why do you want to control other people?

Forgive Shewag, these privileged class folks live in their own bubble. They don't realize what the average guy goes through.

Point is, it was a stupid statement because clearly India is not the safest country in the world. Not even close. People found it funny that someone would even think that and hence they started replying here.

Nothing to get so worked up about.

Again. Its his personal choice. He is talking about his own country with his countrymen.

I am not worked up at all.I actually find this funny. 20 non Indians bashing India on a Issue among Indians on a non Indian forum. :))

Sehwag took no dig at anyone. He was only talking to his own countrymen.

Mr. Sehwag, please tell all the indian patriots in the middleeast, europe and North America this. Crime rate in Canada will definitely go down if they follow Uzma's footsteps.

Crime rate will go down in Canada if it stops interfering in other country's matter and starts providing justice for it's own people's death quicker.

The way Canada had supported and taken time for the air India blast case not to forget the amount of active militants outfits it knew were running under it's nose is enough to say the least.

Its ok if Pakistanis bash Uzma for saying things againist Pakistan. But Sehwag said nothing.

So many times Sehwag has been quoted on the forum for posts that duplicate account posted.

Sehwag praises his country's army and country's peace similar to how a Pakistani cricketer does ,what's with this double standards here.

PAkistani Cricketers gave their army a massive salute after the Lords Win.But if Indian praises its Army you will see Pakistanis bashing them. Thats double standards.

He is already justifying his party will be acting against the Army incase they are deployed in Kerala, wonder how the Jawans from Kerala feel about such "claim" against them.

Maybe because he said something stupid and factually incorrect ??

He can praise Mother India everyday but when he talks nonsense then people will bring him to task like anyone else of his stature, why is that so hard to understand ??

We already know the girls story is full of holes but then to add that she escaped hell and got to heaven is simply a load of baloney.

It will make a nice Bollywood movie, nothing else.

Simply don't blame people here for his stupid statements. He Should either Keep it simple or stick to the facts.

The posters are criticizing Sehwag, did he praise India or degrade Pakistan?

Nothing wrong in poking holes in the girl's story because she spoke directly against Pakistan,so its obvious she should be called out,the point Indian posters are making then why not the same standards for multiple Pakistani cricket players which is same for Sehwag now.

So Indian cricketers should never praise their own army ,country?Apparently being pro-India,IArmy is wrong on the forum and Indian cricketers should be apologetic?

Because that doesnot fit the narrative.

Indians should do what Pakistanis think is right else they should apologise.

Can't believe that we had 83 posts of discussing how Indian celebs are not supposed to praise their country.

Guys i am not really sure why some people are so upset about this thread.

A girl goes to Pakistan to marry someone without her family's knowledge, leaves her daughter behind. She finds out the life is not a Bollywood movie and realises the blunder she made. The guy she married could well be cruel but the girl is equally responsible for her blunders. She returns home making all sort of stupid statement about Pakistan and Sehwag uses her statements to say India is safest country DIRECTLY in response to this girl's cheap shots at Pakistan but Pakistanis shouldn't even discuss the issue?

The fact that lot of people helped the girl (as admitted by Sushma), there was no need to take these cheap shots. Somehow some people think it's unfair we are even disucssing Sehwag's statement?
