Yes… there r majority population of Muslims are under the influence of local mulla and maulavis, no Muslim or their group criticised terrorist act in India…. Indian police caught many terrorists from muhallas, but despite knowing all local Muslims not informed police and kept mum

The fundamental position of Islam is to celebrate when more people of the world are enabled to embrace the success of correct embrace of religion as according to Islam. If non-Muslims want to keep their own places of worship that should also be respected. But you were criticising people on here celebrating Hagia Sophia being converted into a mosque. I don't know the exact timeline history of the structure, but I am assuming it wasn't being used as a church or whatever it was previously. Might be worth opening a new topic, or bumping the old one if you want to discuss it properly.

I don't think the western world was that fussed about the Hagia Sofia becoming a mosque again since it was done in the 15th century. I have seen more outrage from hindus than from westerners to be brutally honest.

Then you haven't bothered to follow the news at all. Except for a few, vaguely misinformed hindu nationalists in India who use it for point scoring, no one in India is aware of the conversion to a mosque again.

On other hand, a whole bunch of western countries protested vigorously at a building that had not been a mosque for a 100 years being converted into one. Orthodox Christian nations like Greece called for sanctions. The Russian Orthodox church condemned it.

It was terrible decision by most accounts. It hadn't been a mosque for a 100 years so no one in living memory had prayed there since the fall of the Ottoman empire. Gorgeous mosaics of the Virgin Mary have apparently been covered up (haven't seen it myself...the only time I visited was in 2018 when it was still a museum). Just stupid posturing by that vainglorious puffed up idiot - Erdogan.

I've just been doing a bit of reading up on the Hagia Sophia since I didn't know much about it, but apparently it's been demolished at least twice before by warring Christians before ever becoming a mosque. Then it collapsed because of an earthquake, and eventually it was rebuilt as a mosque by Sultan Mehmet before the defeat of the Ottomans in the first world war when it was turned into a museum.

Yeah I read a bunch of books about it and Istanbul/Constantinople/Byzantium in general before I visited. I love history anyway and I wanted to be well informed before I saw the place. Did you know one of the demolitions was in riots between supporters of two Chariot racing teams? Puts modern sport hooliganism to shame.

The number of sex scandals involving BJP leaders has just become tiresome now. No wonder Modi said Beti Patao once. It wasn't a slip of the tongue. The mentality comes from the top.

Revanna, this Prajwal dude's father is the older son of ex-PM Deve Gowda. He was always known as a psycho. That's why his name never came up for CM and instead, Kumaraswamy, who used to be fondly called Ganesha (because of his interest in just chilling and growing a nice belly) became CM.

I remember being there at their house once - and I'm not lying or exaggerating about this anecdote - suddenly, someone burst into the house shouting the filthiest of abuses in Kannada. It was Revanna shouting about someone to his chamchas following him. The house used to be filled with pujaris back then. One of them put a tilak on his head - he paused his abuse - and as soon as it was done, continued his abuse right in the pujari's face :dhoni

No reservation based on religion to Muslims as long as I am alive: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that he will not allow reservations for Muslims based on religion and at the cost of Scheduled Caste (SC), Schedule Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The prime minister made the remarks while addressing a poll rally in Telangana's Medak district. Follow full coverage of the Lok Sabha elections here.

He also alleged that the Congress wants to “insult” the Consitution for their vote bank in the Lok Sabha polls.

"…They (Congress) are the people who stop the functioning of the Parliament, they question the Election Commission, they question the EVM, and now for their vote bank, they are insulting the constitution... Till the time I am alive, I will not let them give the reservation meant for Dalits, SCs, STs, and OBCs to the Muslims in the name of religion," the prime minister said.

Modi also exuded confidence that he will celebrate 75 years of the Constitution on a grand scale in his third term.

In his speech, he also took a veiled attack on Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy, alleging that the money collected in the state through “double R (RR) tax” is being channelled to Delhi.

He made these comments while referring to blockbuster Telugu film titled 'RRR', which received global accolades, according to PTI.

Addressing a rally in the Lok Sabha election campaign, Congress president Mallikarjan Kharjee said that we (i.e., Congress) are moving towards the majority, and that is why the Modi government is talking about Mangalsutra and Muslims.

Kharji said that Modi is threatening Hindus, saying that we will take away their wealth and give it to those who have more children. Often, the poor have more children or only Muslims have more children.

The Congress president further said that the poor have more children because they don't have wealth, but why do you only ask about Muslims and their wealth and why are you concerned about their children?

The Congress president also mentioned his five children. He said that I myself have five children and I myself was the only son of my parents.

Farooq Abdullah attacks PM Modi: ‘A Muslim cannot snatch…’

Farooq Abdullah, the president of Jammu and Kashmir's National Conference, said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to divide the country on the basis of religion. He also said that those who will "vote for them" must prepare for hell (after death).

Farooq Abdullah also called Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government a threat to the survival of the country.

"Do not divide this country on the basis of religion, otherwise a storm will unleash making the survival of the country difficult. It is better to talk about uniting the country, instead of dividing its people," Omar Abdullah, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, said.

He addressing an election rally in Thanamandi area of the Rajouri district.

The Anantnag parliamentary constituency will go to polls on May 25.

Reacting to PM Modi's remark that the Congress would redistribute people's money and property to Muslims if voted to power, Abdullah said Muslims respect all religions.

"We are Muslims and our Allah has told us to respect other religions… A Muslim cannot snatch anyone’s right," he said.

He claimed former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi once stopped his vehicle in Pulwama and assured a poor Hindu woman that he would give her a ‘mangalsutra’ as she couldn't afford it.

Farooq Abdullah said those who were against the INDIA bloc were against the country.

"Those voting for them should remember to prepare for hell (after death)," he added.

PM Modi had courted controversy last month with his remarks that the Congress would take away the hard-earned money of the masses and distribute them among "infiltrators" and "those with many children".
At a rally today, PM Modi took a jibe at the Congress, saying governments in the past were unable to implement the Indian Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir. He was referring to the revocation of Article 370.

Indian ruling party’s Islamophobic campaign video removed after backlash​


An animated video put out by Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has been removed from Instagram after it sparked a backlash for demonising Muslims.

India’s prime minister and his Hindu nationalist party have been accused of widening the country’s communal divide by targeting religious minorities, particularly Muslims, on the campaign trail for the ongoing national elections.

Nearly a billion Indians are voting in the election spread across six weeks until the first week of June. Mr Modi is seeking to win a rare third term against a weakened alliance of opposition parties.

The video, posted by the ruling party on its Instagram page on 30 April, pushed Mr Modi’s rhetoric against the country’s Muslims and the main opposition Congress party.

It showed Rahul Gandhi, the son of the late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and the face of the Congress opposition party, holding his party’s manifesto whose cover then morphs into what appears to be Pakistan’s national flag.

A voiceover falsely claims that if "the Congress party comes to power, it will snatch all the money and wealth of non-Muslims and distribute it to Muslims. Their favourite community!”

Mr Modi’s party and the Hindu nationalist ecosystem it’s embedded in – collectively known as the Sangh Parivar – are proponents of making India a Hindu-first nation and routinely attack Muslims with sectarian dog whistles. This was a rare instance when it targeted the minority community by name.

The video went on to parrot another false claim made by Mr Modi that former prime minister Manmohan Singh had said "Muslims have the first claim on resources".

It portrayed Muslims as barbaric "infiltrators" and "outsiders" who looted India. "Congress party's manifesto is nothing but Muslim League's ideology in disguise.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if the video was taken down by the BJP or by Instagram after it was reported by a large number of users.

The Independent has reached out to both the ruling party and Meta for comment.

The video may well be found to be in violation of the country’s model code of conduct, which prohibits parties and candidates from indulging in hate speech while campaigning for elections. Several of those commenting on social media called for the election commission to investigate.

Ahead of the national elections, chief election commissioner Rajeev Kumar issued a warning against hate speech and "speeches along caste or religious lines".

The election commission last week issued a notice to the ruling party after Mr Modi gave a speech in which he falsely referred to the country’s Muslims as “infiltrators”. India is home to the largest population of Muslims in the world – nearly 200 million.

Addressing a campaign rally in Banswara in the western Rajasthan state last month, Mr Modi said that if the Congress party was voted to power it would redistribute wealth from “Hindu wives and daughters” to “those with more children”, another dog whistle that Hindu nationalists employ against the Muslims.

“Earlier, when they were in power, they had said Muslims have the first right to the wealth of the nation,” Mr Modi said, referring to the Congress. “This means they will distribute this wealth to those who have more children, to infiltrators. Should your hard earned money be given to infiltrators? Do you approve of this?”

The prime minister alleged that the Congress party’s manifesto declared that it would “take stock of the gold mothers and daughters have, and will distribute that wealth”.

The Congress manifesto makes no such claims.

The manifesto, called Nyay Patra or ”Letter of Justice”, merely states that “the economic empowerment of minorities is a necessary step for India to realise its full potential” and, if voted to power, the Congress “will ensure that banks will provide institutional credit to minorities without discrimination”.

The ruling party’s litany of false allegations targeting the Congress – allegations amplified on the campaign trail by Mr Modi and repeated in the now-deleted video – began after Sam Pitroda, the chair of the Indian Overseas Congress, suggested that the country should discuss introducing an inheritance tax, where the government takes 55 per cent of a person's wealth after his death.

"If a person has property worth $10m, then after his death, 45 per cent of the property goes to his children and 55 per cent of the property goes to the government," Mr Pitroda told ANI news agency.

The Congress party has distanced itself from the proposal saying it didn't reflect the party's position.

India election: Modi's divisive campaign rhetoric raises questions

In the lead-up to India's general election, Narendra Modi was expected to frame it as a referendum on his decade as prime minister.

He was expected to boast about achievements like generous welfare programmes and spaceflights. He was to reaffirm that the new Ram temple in Ayodhya represented a cultural assertion for India's majority Hindus. Even foreign policy was anticipated to influence the ballot, with the publicity boost afforded by Mr Modi's hosting of the G20 summit last September. Opinion polls have predicted a third, record-equalling landslide win for his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

But early in the gruelling six-week election, Mr Modi's campaign shifted gears, using divisive rhetoric that has raised questions about his tactics. He's been accusing the opposition, led by the Congress party, of appeasing the Muslim minority community.

Muslims make up 14% of India's more than 1.4 billion people. Taking a cue from Mr Modi's campaign, social media posts by the BJP have, according to the opposition, "demonised" Muslims.

He told a rally on 21 April that the opposition Congress wanted to distribute wealth to "infiltrators" and to "those who have many children". His remarks were widely seen as referring to Muslims.

At another rally, he warned women that the opposition would confiscate their gold and redistribute it to Muslims. He accused the Congress of orchestrating a "vote jihad", urging a "certain community" to unite against him. Mr Modi even said the Congress would select the Indian cricket team "on the basis of religion".

That's not all. In a recent interview Mr Modi said the "whole world" was trying to influence the elections. This week, Mr Modi blamed the Congress for taking "truckloads" of money from billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has long spoken about the close ties that Mr Modi shares with the country's two richest men.

"For the first time you have spoken in public about Adani and Ambani. Is it your personal experience that you know they give money in trucks?" Mr Gandhi responded in a video message. Neither businessman has reacted to the comments.

India's opposition has also accused Mr Modi of Islamophobia, calling his remarks "divisive, hate speech". The Congress has demanded an investigation into a potential code of conduct violation. Since the BJP's rise to power, hate speech against India's 200 million Muslims has increased. But Mr Modi's fiery rhetoric on the stump has surprised many, as they expected a focus on highlighting his achievements instead.

"To be honest, I thought Mr Modi's campaign would be much more about the rising India story, and about what they had done for the people," says Rahul Verma of the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), a Delhi-based think tank.

Others say Mr Modi's remarks are not unprecedented. They point to many such instances during his previous election campaigns, including what they call his "inflammatory rhetoric" after the riots in Gujarat in 2002 ahead of the state's assembly elections. "So, it has not surprised me, but is has shocked me. We often refer to such rhetoric as dog-whistling but there was nothing subtle about the language being employed," says Milan Vaishnav of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington.

For one, many say, the BJP might have been spooked by a significant dip in turnout in early rounds of voting amid what has been a rather low energy election. In the previous two elections, won decisively by the BJP, high turnouts benefitted the party - 2014 was largely a vote against the Congress, and 2019 was a vote for Mr Modi.

Second, the opposition has been trying to reshape the narrative of the 2024 election, shifting focus from being solely a referendum on Mr Modi to campaigning on issues like unemployment, social justice and economic inequality.

Political scientist Neelanjan Sircar suggests that the BJP excels in national elections when it focuses on overarching national issues. He told a podcast recently that the party's not "playing its strongest game" when elections become more regionalised, and local factors come into play.

Mr Modi's party is targeting 370 seats this time, up from 303 in 2019. However, their rallying cry of "Abki Baar, 400 par" (This time, above 400), aiming for the party and its allies to secure a landslide, might have backfired. The opposition appears to have seized on the slogan, portraying the BJP as a dominating force set to reshape India with a massive majority.

"The opposition is using this slogan to say if they come with such huge majority, the BJP will change the constitution. And the opposition's narrative to empower poor and lower castes might have got some traction given there are high levels of economic anxiety evident in the pre-poll surveys," says Mr Verma. "This might have provoked Mr Modi to take this narrative head on and give it a Hindu-Muslim twist."

Is Mr Modi's divisive rhetoric a sign of desperation?

Not really, says Mr Vaishnav. "To me, it is designed to mobilise his cadres and perhaps to make up for an underwhelming performance in the first few phases.

"Desperation suggests that the BJP is losing, which I do not believe to be the case. Meeting the new target of 400 seats will be difficult unless the BJP can retain its seats from 2019 as well as expand into new areas."

Despite Mr Modi's rhetoric on the stump, he has sung a different tune in recent interviews with news networks.

"I am not anti-Islam, nor am I anti-Muslim," he told Times Now.

He said his government's welfare benefits extended to all, irrespective of their community or religion, adding that "social justice and secularism is a guarantee from Modi".

Mr Modi criticised the opposition for using Muslims as political pawns and suggested that the community should reflect on its own situation. "Muslims should introspect why there's a sense of shortcomings within the community." He said the Muslim community was changing all over the world. "When I go to the Gulf countries, India and I get so much respect. Here there's opposition," he said.

Unravelling the complexity behind election victories in India is always a challenge. Gilles Verniers, a political scientist, believes they are rarely fought and won based on past accomplishments.

"Voters instead determine their choice according to what parties and candidates offer for the future. After building its past campaigns on welfare, security and nationalism, and having scored on these matters, the BJP does not have a lot of new ideas to offer to voters, hence the exacerbation of ethnic and religious nationalism," he says.

Mr Modi and his party will disagree. But one thing is evident: this election has not yet manifested itself as a sweeping wave favouring any side, regardless of which party stands to gain or lose from it. "In politics," says political analyst Pratap Bhanu Mehta, "never underestimate the power of boredom". That could account for what many say is the BJP's "nervousness".

The Muslim population in India has increased while the Hindu majority has decreased between 1950 and 2015

In a paper released by an organization connected to the Indian government, it has been stated that since 1950 there has been an increase of five Hindus for every Muslim in India.

In the comments made by the Economic Advisory Council for the Prime Minister's Working Paper, the trend of decline in Hindu population and significant increase in Muslim population has been noted.

The paper concluded that the share of Hindu population in the country decreased by 7.81 percent between 1950 and 2015, while the Muslim population increased by 43.15 percent. In 1950, the Hindu population was about 320 million, having more than tripled in seven decades.

The Muslim population has increased fivefold from 37 million to 181 million. Among other religious minority groups in the country, the Christian and Sikh population has also grown faster than the Hindu population, while Hindus accounted for 85 percent of the total population in 1950, which has now declined to 78 percent.

The share of Muslims, which was 10 percent of the total population in 1950, increased to 14 percent in 2015.

India elections: Minority communities, especially Muslims, anxious with Narendra Modi's expected election win​


Elections bring out the best but also the worst of democracy.

The long seven-phase process that stretches for 44 days is fraught with the menace of communal friction.

India is now more polarised than before, with an ever-widening gap between the majority Hindus and minority Muslim population.

Over the last 10 years fault lines have deepened and trust has been eroded between communities under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu right-wing government.

In the charged atmosphere of campaign season, politicians make claims that can be divisionary to garner votes.

No less than Prime Minister Modi himself stirred the communal debate in his speech in Banswara, Rajasthan, on 21 April attacking the Congress party, accusing them of appeasement politics.

Responding to a Congress leader who had suggested inheritance tax prevalent in America as a way to redistribute wealth, Modi said: "When they were in power they said Muslims have the first right over the nation's wealth.

"This means they will collect your wealth and distribute it to those who have many children. To the infiltrators.

"Do you think your hard-earned money should be given to infiltrators?"

The crowds responded with negative chants.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called it a "deliberate and desperate attempt to divert attention from PM Modi's malicious and mischievous election campaign that is anchored only in lies and more lies".

The country is on edge whenever general or state elections take place.

Words matter and have consequences.

'That morning hundreds of policemen came'

Imam Zakir Hussain walked Sky News through the rubble of a flattened 13th century Akhunji Mosque that stood for 700 years on the outskirts of Delhi.

Earlier this year the Municipal Corporation said it was illegal and demolished the structure, an adjoining madrasa and uprooted a graveyard, even though it was listed in the archaeological records 100 years ago - long before the inception of the corporation.

Mr Hussain had been the imam of the mosque for over 20 years.

"That morning hundreds of policemen came and demolished everything without giving us any time to remove our belongings, even our holy books," he said.

"They have erased every mark, didn't spare the graves either.

"It's a historic 700-year-old mosque, how can it be built on illegal land when there was no municipal corporation?

"Our hearts are broken."

'I was a target because I am a Muslim'

Muslims feel they have been a target of right-wing organisations under Mr Modi's nationalist government for the past 10 years.

Dismissing these allegations, Nalin Kohli, national spokesperson for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said: "In this country there is no special reassurance for anybody.

"There's a reassurance for every citizen that a citizen can be of any religion.

"Prime Minister Modi's government works honestly, sincerely, consistently for every Indian, irrespective of region, colour, race, language or religion. Everyone is equal before law."

But that's little assurance for 58-year-old Javed Mohammad, a social activist from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, accused by the administration of being a mastermind behind a communal incident in June 2020.

He was arrested and jailed for almost two years, multiple cases were registered against him including using the stringent National Security Act.

A day after his arrest the authorities brought in bulldozers and demolished his house, claiming it was illegal.

Out on bail and homeless, he is fighting multiple cases against the state including the unauthorised demolition of his home.

"There is no doubt I was a target because I am a Muslim. Because they wanted the Muslim leadership that is coming up should be crushed and then everyone supporting them will be scared," he said.

His case has been flagged up by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, an independent, bipartisan agency that monitors universal rights to freedom, of religion or belief.

"Seeing my home demolished was heartbreaking, what could I do, I was in jail. There was no enquiry or notice issued, no process or procedure of any law followed. It's like jungle's law. I never imagined it would happen to me," he added.

Crackdown on civil society

The Modi regime is accused of being authoritarian, cracking down on dissent and in particular on civil society.

According to the government, licences of over 20,702 non-government organisations have been cancelled for allegedly violating stringent financial regulations.

These include units of well-known organisations like Amnesty International, Oxfam and World Vision.

Human rights activist Harsh Mander, who heads the Centre of Equity Studies, is a fierce critic of the government and has borne the brunt of such a challenge.

His organisation, the Karwan-e-Mohabbat (Caravan of Love), works with helping victims of mob lynching, communal violence - most being from the Muslim community.

Multiple court cases and raids by federal agencies and police on his home and offices have affected his work.

From a strength of 100, he now has only four people at his Delhi office.

He tells Sky News: "This government has been systematically using the power of its various investigative agencies to come down very heavily on civil society.

"Many have closed down those that survive struggle with not wanting to say anything or associate with anyone who might anger this government."

The ruling party dismisses these allegations saying the law was there prior to them taking power and the Modi government is only implementing it.

BJP's Nalin Kohli said: "The question to be asked is what is it they were doing so bad that their licences were cancelled.

"Perhaps their papers are so problematic that they don't have any right to go back to court, ultimately there is due legal process.

"Does an organisation in the name of civil liberties have a right to participate in, say political functioning?

"We believe there seems to be an agenda and one really wonders where the funding was coming from, that seemed to be creating a narrative in favour of separatism and this is one country that has suffered the pains of partition."

Modi's silence

Modi's silence on the many instances of lynching of Muslim men for alleged trading in cow meat, Love Jihad and bulldozing of homes belonging to Muslims, has been deafening.

Allegations emerged that state governments ruled by his party look the other way when violence is perpetuated on minorities by right-wing Hindu mobs.

"India's democracy in the last 10 years has collapsed quite substantially. Parliament is virtually non-functional, opposition leaders are being targeted by a range of agencies and are in prison or threatened with prison. Our judiciary have not been consistent in the defence of constitutional values and the media acts as cheerleaders of the ruling government and worse as also people who propagate hate against Muslim minorities," Mr Mander said.

Communities are anxious as Modi is expected to win his third term.

He will need to reassure everyone he is prime minister of all citizens irrespective.

Dravidian stalwart E V R Periyar at a meeting in Karaikudi in 1973 has triggered a controversy.

Former MP Subramanian Swamy has moved the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking derecognition of the DMK as a political party for the call to subject “Brahmins of Tamil Nadu to genocide.”

DMK spokesperson Rajiv Gandhi, a lawyer by profession, made the controversial remarks in reply to a video “quote-tweeted” by television personality Sumanth Raman in which Periyar was advocating the killing of Brahmins at a public meeting in Karaikudi in 1973.

“If we had heeded to what Periyar had said, we would not have been standing before people like you for justice, rights, jobs, education, and equality. You (Brahmins) may be just 3 per cent but you dominate in several fields even now,” Rajiv Gandhi wrote in reply to Raman’s post.

Becos Muslim community has a history of colluding with such parties all over india post partition to keep getting special treatment.

What special treatment is it that they want? Is it not just more likely they would vote for any party which doesn't campaign on an anti-Muslim agenda? Just look at the OP title of the thread for example.

For decades, had a choice to vote for Cong which didn't have an anti-muslim agenda but prefered to vote for a party with a anti-hindu agenda.

I see you didn't answer my question, regarding your statement that Muslims want special treatment. The rest of what you wrote doesn't make sense. Are you saying Indian Muslims were anti-hindu for decades and they supported some Dravidian party for that reason?

Also not sure what you mean by your last cryptic remark "read cup".

Jinnah was afraid that Muslims would be subjugated under a newly empowered hindu administration looking for retribution for centuries of Muslim rule under the Mughals. That was the whole reasoning for partition.

It's amazing how the massive majority religion always manage to make themselves the victims terrorised by the nasty minorities. This is the history being taught by RSS cadres.
