"They've struggled in NZ and probably struggle a little more away from home" : Mitchell Starc

Paceman hopes unfamiliar conditions will hurt Pakistan in Test series, starting at the Gabba

Pace spearhead Mitchell Starc believes the pink-ball Test at the Gabba presents Australia with the perfect opportunity to get one up on a Pakistan side he says "struggles away from home".

Pakistan briefly claimed the world number one Test ranking in August after a 2-2 series result in England, but they were beaten 2-0 by New Zealand in the recently-concluded clashes across the Tasman, and Starc feels they are vulnerable on the road.

Since Misbah-ul-Haq took over as captain in 2010, Pakistan have won just six of 16 Tests outside Asia (including two against Zimbabwe) while they've lost only four Tests out of 24 in their adopted home of the United Arab Emirates.

"They've struggled in New Zealand and probably struggle a little more away from home – they're really comfortable in the UAE," he said after arriving in Brisbane ahead of Thursday's first Commonwealth Bank Test.

"So it's a good opportunity for us in this Test match to assert our dominance first up, make an impression in the first Test of the series, which we all know goes a long way to working out the final result.

"(But) they've got a good bowling attack as well, so (their batsmen) would've faced pace or swing for a long time in the nets ... they've played some really good cricket over the last year-and-a-half to fight to the top of the world rankings."

While Pakistan's bowling attack looks more than capable of fighting fire with fire in Australia, the batting order is somewhat of an unknown quantity in the unfamiliar conditions. The Mickey Arthur-coached side, which has slipped to fourth on the rankings following the defeat in New Zealand, hasn't toured Down Under for a Test series in seven years, and has never won a series in the country, from 11 attempts. Among the batsmen, only veteran pair Younis Khan (three matches) and Misbah (two) have played Test cricket in Australia, with the duo posting highest scores of 87 and 65no respectively.

Pakistan's 2009-10 tour took in Tests in Melbourne, Sydney and Hobart, and gave Australian viewers a first taste of then 18-year-old Mohammad Amir, who subsequently spent five years banned from the sport following the spot-fixing controversy of Lord's 2010. Starc said any questions regarding whether the left-arm quick – who was in scintillating form in his Australian return in a Cairns warm-up match last week – should have been allowed to return to international cricket were immaterial to the hosts.

"He's playing Test cricket, he's another player in their team, and we'll address him in the team meeting," he said.

"That's all that needs to be said I think.

"To be honest, (I haven't read about his story) at all. I've seen a few highlights of him swinging the ball around, and in Cairns he had a bit of fun swinging the pink ball.

"Hopefully that means I can swing it around a bit down at the Gabba this week."

Starc praised the abilities of the 24-year-old, with the pair possessing a similar skills-set headlined by flat-out pace and a lethal inswinger to the right-hander.

"He's got great skills, everyone in world cricket knows that," he added.

"He bowls at good pace, swings the ball, he's got a fast-arm action and knows his game really well for a young bowler.

"So he's one of the guys they're going to rely on to get that ball swinging around and trying get wickets early and throughout an innings.

"So we're going to have to discuss him in our team meeting and the guys who have faced him in the past can speak up and we'll see what little things they've picked up, but he's just another one of their players."

An Australian talking about struggling away from home. :))

This guy must have some nerve to mock others for struggling abroad

This thread is killing me, don't know which side to take. :broad

Excellent use of smiley (10 points)

Starc - trying to downplay Amir which he should but I am sure their main worry is Yasir Shah.

The steady drip of hot takes before the test starts. By the time the test comes around everyone should be pumped

Lol your mocking our away record seriously? You play in England so regularly but haven't won or drawn or series there in years. We played there for the 1st time in 6 years and draw the series.

Don't think Australian players should talk about other teams overseas performances.

Regardless we will get pummelled in this series. Batsmen won't score beyond 200 and oz isn't renowned for spinning tracks so don't see Yasir doing much here.

Don't see any test match lasting 5 days

Shots fired already!:ms

To be honest, if you look at all his quotes, he's actually praising us overall.

I know we're going to rip his bowling to pieces, and he's a bit arrogant about that too, which will be some real fun. :amir

Mostly diplomatic statements. I expected some more mirch masala. :srini

Meh, all these Australian pacers with their carefully managed workloads. Pat Howard has made namb pamby sissies out of them. He will do a Sohail Khan at some stage in the series.

We did better in England this summer than Australia have at any point in 15 years.

At least we didn't crash to 60 all out unlike some other teams.

Ha Ha struggling away from home is something aussies can surely talk about.

Anyways I expect Pakistan to play better than in NZ that series was just plain stupid and distraction.

Lmao. This is why was looking forward to touring Aus. Hope we hit back verbally though I doubt Misbah and his yes men will engage in any of this, which is ok since it doesn't come naturally to them.

I hope Starc gets in our faces. Exactly what our bowlers need to get fired up.

Here's a brave call: I think a certain type of batsman can manage Starc, as long the batter is brave enough to take a big front foot stride.

Most of the stuff will be aimed at Arthur, as he has demonstrated that he is a somewhat combustible type of character.

Is England the only country that matters? Australia recently won in NZ, SA and WI.

Australia would rather win in England than any of those countries.

Interesting how you say they won in those countries but convinentley don't mention there results the last time they toured the subcontinent

Pakistanis need to chill ... our record in Aussie land is PUTRID. An embarrassment really and it has always come down to: batting collapses and dropped catches. The closest we came to challenging Aussies was during the '99 tour where the match at Hobart was literally robbed from us due to pathetic umpiring. And of course the Sydney test in 2010.

So yeah calm your horses down. Our batting approach will once again be our demise just as it was in NZ recently.

Our batsmen should only defend against Starc, and I bet he won't take any wickets then, lol :D

Where is Wahab? Has he got Smith's number?

On a serious note, Pakistan will certainly do better than what Australia has done in Asia. When Misbah hits the joint fastest test century against you, it means only one thing that you were extremely terrible.

Misbah has guts. Negan approves.

I honestly do believe we can win in the D/N test as long as we bowl first. Amir, Riaz, Rahat and Shah will be too much for their three newbies.

I'm really hoping that we can at least win or draw a Test series here, really couldn't care less about the ODI series since I know we'll get hammered hard, hope Azhar steps down afterwards.

What does that mean we should chill? we should not watch the match? we should not post?
