Even former India batter Gautam Gambhir criticised Babar during the commentary of Pakistan's match vs Netherlands and called him a selfish captain. "In my opinion, first, you think about your team instead of yourself; if nothing goes according to your plan, you should have sent Fakhar Zaman up the batting order. This is called selfishness; as a captain, it is easy to be selfish. It is easy for Babar and Rizwan to open the innings for Pakistan and create so many records. If you want to be a leader, you have to think about your team".

Gambhir is making a clown out of him self. Had huge respect for him for being a gritty cricketer.

Wasim Akram does not think so!

“That’s his opinion. Gautam Gambhir, himself being a successful captain in IPL, winning twice for KKR… Of course, he is one of the top players of his time. Everybody, I suppose, has a right to give their opinion. And that’s his opinion.”

He criticizes Indian cricketers as well. He is one the most unselfish cricketer. Be it is resignation after he could not help his side go through semi final, or handing over his man of the match awards to his team mates, playing risky cricket when the asking rate is high from the start. Gambhir could have easily tapped a few singles and got 100 in 2011 final go home with man of the match. He continued playing aggressive and got out in the process.

Delhi boys are straight shooters. No sugar coating.

No one is questioning his integrity. Saying someone is selfish during commentary does look good on himself.

He says what the thinks. He has been going after DK from the beginning of his selection. India cannot pick players to play just 5 balls. Also he went after KL Rahul's captaincy. He even had a tiff with Dhoni.

Truer words have not been spoken. But like always, they would fall on deaf ears.

Shahid Afridi reaction to GG comments:

"Tournament k baad koshish karenge Babar ko bole ki unke baare mein bhi kuch bole kyuki wo bhi toh ghar jayenge na. [During the tournament, we'll try and tell Babar to say something about him. Afterall, he (Gambhir) will head straight back home to India too],

"There is always criticism but you need to be very careful with words. You should use words that it should come as an advice for the player and you can make the people understand it as well. As far as Babar is concerned, he has given so many match-winning performances. The consistency with which he has scored, very few Pakistan batters have. He may not have risen to the expectations which is why he is facing some flak."

"The kind of format T20 is, any team can upset any other side. But on paper, the Indian team is quite big and experienced. They have some really star individual performers while Bangladesh is not the same team which they were some time back. They were expected to do well but whatever I have seen on Shakib's captaincy, he hasn't delivered good results. On current form, one would obviously rate India," the former all-rounder mentioned.

I thought Wasim had the same opinion about Babar a few days ago when he said that Sharjeel had to come one down as Babar refused to do so for Karachi Kings.

What Gautam has said here rings true as majority of Pakistani ex cricketers and analysts are of the same opinion about Babar.

Not sure that why this is rubbing a few individuals the wrong way.

Team should always come first over pursuit of personal milestones.

Wasim does have the same opinion but he has to watch what he says on the programme. They have to go a bit easy. And whenever any of them actually go in on the approach of the team, we have Misbah interrupting that we don’t have “skill level”, “grassroots” problems.

Basically everyone is looking for solutions - but Misbah wants everyone to give up and wait 20
Years for change.

He is correct

Everyone can see Babar only cares about himself

Gautam is right. Babar often plays for himself no doubt about it.

Misbah is right - you cannot have the right intent if you don’t believe in your skill level

Have to agree with Gambhir.

For example - watch Babar closely when he approaches a 50 or 100.

Their Batsmen are light years ahead of us when it comes to T20 batting! What planet are you living on???
Once again, unless Ireland starts winning consistently against top teams, there is no comparison.

For all their intent, they imploded quite spectacularly against Australia the other night.

Thats why he should be nowhere near Pak cricket...

He is very stubborn individual who has a fear of change , also the reason why he played Azhar ali and Asad Shafiq for so many years...

He played Azhar ali , Asad Shafiq in ODIs many times but finally ended up playing Haris Sohail, Sohaib Maqsood and Umar Akmal in the middle order in 2015 WC, which he should have tried ever since the 2013 CT debacle..

Also made Azhar Ali captain the team twice and proven twice he is not fit for the role..:mw

Ireland win as consistently as we do in ICC tournaments against big teams

This is why I think Misbah and his fans chat absolute rubbish

How can these teams with 1/10th of your domestic structure produce proper white ball/T20 batsman at international level but you with your 6 Domestic regions and second XIs with Umar Akmal’s in the 2nd XIs produce Shan Masood or Mohammad Rizwan??

Virat again showed Babar how to play for his team in T20'S. Score fast or get out giving someone else a chance. No point standing there defending wasting so many overs in the process. I hate it when Babar plays so defensively.

Maybe Ghambhir needs to tell Indian openers the same, as they had not been too fast in the PP overs in the tournament.

Gambhir is spot on! Babar and Rizwan both are terrible players whose only aim is to make useless runs and boost their average! Good to see that the world is starting to scrutinise Babar who despite being an average player continues to receive praise.

It is really pathetic to always look at things glass half full.

It’s negativity and cowardly mentality disguised as realism by these misbaholics.

I do wonder whether there is a bonus paid out to these guys for continuing to push this cowardly agenda.

Lol gambhir preaching selflessness😂😂

Played 2 clutch knocks in 2 finals for India and never got the credit and won 2 IPL finals but doesn’t get the hype Dhoni and Rohit get. Never once complained about it. Gambhir is a lot of things but a cheater and selfish is not something even his enemies associate with him.

Misbah is 100% correct. People think if these players just start trying, they will all turn into Joss Buttler or something. Is there even a single player with a 140+ SR? Even Asif Ali is barely above Babar's SR despite always coming in at the end to slog.

Approach is poor but its the clear lack of talent itself thats the biggest issue. Even domestically, you would be hard pressed to find any decent LOI in the middle order.

Gautam unfortunately is also correct about Babar. You can see it the way he starts slowing down for his 50's before trying to hit big after that. Doesn't help that its ingrained to them when they are younger that its all about building an extended partnership and the running coming eventually and placing high value on your wicket.

I think Babar can open with an attacking opener. Both Babar and Rizwan shouldn't open.

I don't think Babar is selfish. He is simply an accumulator. That's how he plays.

For some Pakistani fans, the criticism is right when a Pakistani says but heaven forbid if a non-Pakistani expert says the same thing.

Gambhir said almost verbatim what Wasim Akram said few days ago. Now even Wasim Akram pretends what Gambhir said was “just an opinion.”

Did Gambhir say anything regarding Babar when Pakistan beat India by 10 wickets?

Asking for a friend.

He was brutally critical of the Indian team. In fact he has criticized Kohli more than he has done Babar or Rizwan and if anything praised Pakistani fast bowler.

Unfortunately Gambhir is one of those divisive guys that these statements catch the attention.

Did GG do the commentary in Asia Cup as well? I thought he talked alot of sense there and praised pakistani players and also gave suggestions where they could have done things differently. Allthough I never liked him during his active days, I like some of his comments, like this one on Babar.

And we are commenting the players day in and day out, why can't GG or any other former player for that matter give his/her opinion?

Forget your stats for a minute. And no need for the exaggerated statements. No one is asking anyone to turn in to a Jos Buttler.

Focus on your intent argument. The gap with skill level is not about skill level. It is about practice, guts, game awareness, removal of fear of failure, ambition. If you’re an international cricketer, you have enough skill level. It’s about your approach to the game.

Are there problems in our domestic cricket? Yes. But same with Bangladesh, Ireland, West Indies etc etc.

Misbah is translating the problems to mean that unless you change everything and wait 20 years, don’t even try a different approach.

It’s such a cop out to say our players are not good enough or our system is rubbish so just give up.

Im no fan of malik, in fact I was probably his worst critic in his playing days, but I was impressed with him looking for solutions and even Waqar.

Misbah is such a professor of doom and gloom. It’s no surprise he took us back 20 years.

You may not like who is saying it, but what he's saying is right.

If Bangladesh can produce players like Litton Das, who played a blinder that Rizwan and Babar haven’t done in the last few months, then we should be able to as well.

Before the RizBab divas come crying, I’m not saying Liton is or isn’t more talented than RizBab, but the intent with which he got those runs chasing what is a proper high score considering overall average scores in this edition of the wt20

A fraud like like that shouldn't be on the show.

I think its true for both pakistani openers , rizwan seems even more selfish than babar.

Did GG do the commentary in Asia Cup as well?

Yes he did. I find him closer to Shastri in commentary. Both obviously want India to win but also get excited when the opposition plays well. I remember a Pakistani batsman's six which Gambhir genuinely seemed wowed by. I'd say, at least during commentary, he is more neutral than Gavaskar, whose voice most of the time becomes embarrassingly low-tone when anyone other than an Indian batsman plays a great shot.

And Gambhir has criticized all the big names except Sachin, Sehwag and perhaps Yuvraj from India. He was one of the earliest supporters of Kohli but never shied away from sparring with him during the IPL. I think he's fair in his criticisms and has also praised Dhoni when it was merited.

As a politician, he talks his party talk and even tries to spread fake news. But that's a different matter.

Delhi/ Uttrakhand boys as well * :inti

Bangalore guys are straight shooters too. We are just a lil more polite about it :P

If you have to be polite about it, then you’re not shooting straight.

You can shoot striaght and be polite as well.

Gambhir is a sore loser and cry baby ....he wants attention and like a sooth sayer legend he forces and critical of every one.already he has lot of enemies...
He didn't perform and was a walking wicket in the 2011 test drubbing humiliation in aus and eng...so dhoni didn't want him and he was kicked out....
The most jealous of all asian cricketer should be Gautam Gambhir...
Lol he played both innings in finals because he should and no one excepted from him...he was not a favourite of the masses and rightfully so common PPL never cared his 97 in finals...

Gambhir will be jealous of dhoni and Kohli till his death or both these players die...both Kohli and gambhir are from Delhi and dhoni wanted Kohli as next vice captain and leader next.so u can understand his jealousy

Totally agree. I like Shastri's commentary too, allthough he get's a lot of stick from the fans.

He can be as selfish as he wants

The world is now watching

And he has nowhere to hide his incompetence at the top of the order if he is being selfish

Babar's batting has been exposed badly

This guy is such an over-hyped batter and score selfish tuktuk innings against C/D players of top teams in flat wickets. Now all the teams sending their top players and Babar fail like no tomorrow. Should only play ODI may be in test but definitely not T20.

Your opinion please!!!

What a fantastic knock from Babar. Truly magical 6 (15) before getting out.

Our fans are most delusional. They want to hear super praise about our players even they score duck.

Seems like Australia is not his favourite country to play in. He has not only got out early but has also struggled to score runs.

Poor thread, every player has a bad patch , where were you when he was scoring runs left right and center

Great aggressive batting by Babar 6 off only 15. That's what some of our fans want to hear.

He has scored in Australia in past, test ,odi t20, in any format you name

I don't understand the criticism he's getting. He's obviously going through a bad patch but this guy is a class act. His stats speak for itself.

We on the other hand have an actual passenger in Bavuma.

Criticism is justified. He failed on the biggest stage. He as captain failed to lead by example.

Let's face it, if Babar had not been captain, another honest captain would have dropped him from the playing eleven based on his lack of form and even worse completely shot body language. T20 format is very cruel where you cannot carry out of form players in the playing eleven.

Babar is not close to top T20 batsmen and never was. He has limitations, but he is not as bad as some posters are suggesting here. 4 games and poor output does not mean that he does not know how to bat.

Yes, opening always and also insisting to keep scoring run a ball knock is selfish, but he can be a good fit coming at number 3.

Well he thought of the team today and tried to hit big shot.
Seriously I do not know why he is being so stubborn just drop one down, the other opener will only play two overs and be out and you will still get plenty of overs to play. Atleast this way you will not be labelled selfish and deflect criticism for not trying alternatives.
