Been getting a lot of news here lately that India is essentially a covid death zone right now and the situation is so bad that there's a huge shortage of ventilators, moreover we've banned any export of raw materials that help them make more vaccine for their huge population. Seems like a dire situation, sending thoughts and prayers to the people of India.

Lots of videos and news coming out of India. Indian ppers, please be safe and keep family safe. Do not go out. Stay put for the next 30 days atleast. Pyres running out of wood and land, hospital running out of oxygen and morgues running out of space. It is indeed a dire situation. I hope and pray Allah gives everyone sabr who lost a loved one. This is certainly a tough time for humanity and my prayers are with you all. Be safe!!

Maybe one of our Indian poster can update us with their first hand experience.

India is just leading. It’s inevitable that this is happening in Pakistan soon if you look at Islamabad and Lahore. The same quick descent is being seen and I hope people start using their brains, are smart about their choices and do their part to stop being enveloped on this tsunami

He was in to mid thirtees with a young family

Situation in Mumbai is frightening. Number of patients have outnumbered hospital beds.

Pakistan-based humanitarian organisation has offered to help the people of India manage the Covid-19 pandemic. Faisal Edhi, Edhi Foundation's chairman, on Friday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting permission to enter India with a team of volunteers and 50 ambulances to help assist in the pandemic.

In his letter, Faisal Edhi said that he seeks to lead the team himself.

"We are very sorry to hear about the exceptionally heavy impact that the pandemic has had on your country, where a tremendous number of people are suffering immensely.... we would like to extend our help in the form of a fleet of 50 ambulances along with our services to assist you in addressing, and further circumventing, the current health conditions," the letter addressed to PM Modi said.

Faisal Edhi said that he only seeks permission from the Indian government to enter with the ambulances and a team, including emergency medical technicians, office staff, drivers and supporting staff.

"We will arrange all the necessary supplies that our team needs to assist the people of India. Importantly, we are not requesting any other assistance from you, as we are providing the fuel, food, and necessary amenities that our team will require," he said.

"We only request your permission to enter India as well as any necessary guidance from the local administration and police department," the letter said.

Faisal Edhi spearheads one of the largest charitable ambulance networks in Pakistan. In the past, the foundation has been involved in several humanitarian efforts linked with India and Pakistan, including the return of deaf and mute girl Geeta who had been stuck in Pakistan for 15 years.

The offer from the Edhi Foundation comes shortly after Pakistani citizens lit up Twitter urging their prime minister Imran Khan to help India fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Situation in Pakistan is also not so great, but Government seems to be in better control of the situation. Hope situation improves in both countries ( and all over the world ) soon.

Thankfully here in USA, its getting better, thanks to massive vaccination drive.

Just read the same article on Times of India.

Whilst a few Indians have posted favourable comments about this gesture, I'm shocked at the amount of hate and bile expressed by the majority of Indian posters in the comments section

Here are some examples

"They will infiltrate terrorists or drugs or spy equipment... Never trust P***s. Only good P**i is a dead P**i."

"This needs to be probed. Seems like a strategy to send money for terrorist activities in India."

"Thanks but not thanks.Pakistan will plant bomb in one of the ambulances and will kill more people than Covid itself"

However, the sensible ones appreciate the offer

"Is it appropriate to be suspicious on a organisation who is busy in medical help shame on us and our bad ideology"

"All r Human being first wholeheartedly appreciate the humanitarian offer by Edi foundation"

"There are many who could use aid.We should sensibly , and thankfully accept"

Having had Covid myself, including being admitted to hospital, but luckily now fully recovered, my thoughts and prayers go to anyone and anyone suffering from this horrible illness, whether they be Indian or Pakistani or anyone else.

I was lucky I was in a UK hospital with all the modern facilities. And even then my family was suffering with worry about me.

I can't even imagine what the relatives of those unfortunate to be in dire need of oxygen, but can't get any, must be going through, be they be in Pakistan or in India.

All one can do is to pray that they get lucky, as I did, and make a full recovery.

Why would you willingly read the comments section of Times of India. It's worse than the Daily Mail comments section.

Won't blame them one bit, when your 24/7 fed the same anti propaganda, you would have said the same. And sadly we are slowly moving towards the mindset also due this resurgent extremist movements and mindsets.

I generally read the comments section after reading the article itself on any news website, so as to get the perspective, and the reactions, of the readers, and not just the writer of any article.

And no, I'm not just concentrating on the negatives. If you read my post, you should have noticed that I also quoted the positive comments from the Indian posters.

But, if the vile comments are anything to go by, then the security and safety of the Edhi Foundation staff may become an issue unless the Indian authorities offer to provide appropriate security.

Why concentrate on the negative - am sure many others would have looked at it positively.
You need to look at the ground realities also, and not just be blinkered by just looking at the surface. See my post above.

This was always going to happen. The chaos happening in India is mainly due to the following reasons..

1. Once the first wave of covid receded, everyone started thinking the worst was behind them when the worst was actually yet to arrive. There was visible laxity in the following of SOPs among the common people and it was as if the people thought covid had went away when it was always lurking there. Seeing people without masks was becoming more and more common and even if they had a mask on, it was either dragged below the chin or the nose, which is pretty much pointless really.

You can never make our people follow any rules and regulations for an extended period of time because it's in our nature to flout rules. It's why you'll see traffic rules violations like no other place on earth in our part of the world. So asking our people to follow strict SOP measures for an hour extended period of time was always going to be a hard task.

2. We were massively under testing even during the first wave. I said the same months back when the first wave was happening. This is not something specific to India though and there seems to be a common thought process among the developing nations in both Asia and Africa that if you don't test enough, maybe you won't notice the problem and it will just go away. The developing world tests just a fraction of the amount of tests the western world and east asian countries carry out per day per million people. The best way to tackle covid is to test, test and test. Aggressive testing and early intervention is how countries like South Korea and Japan managed to tackle covid.

Sure you might not reduce the case count, but at least early medical intervention might reduce the number of cases that need invasive ventilation, which in turn would not have overwhelmed the healthcare system of the country. In my opinion, strict rules (with fines) on the wearing of masks should have been enforced and followed stringently till mass scale vaccination of all age groups was carried out. Yeah I know it's impractical but that was probably the only way we were going to avoid the covid wave. Once people became lax on the SOPs and started mingling in high density areas, it was always an explosion waiting to happen. It was never a question of if but when.

Seeing the news and speaking to my friends, what is happening now in India is tragic.
I pray that the the sick and infected people will somehow recover and that the peak will soon be over and hospitals will be able to handle the sick.

Horrendous situation. Prayers to our Indian friends, I hope you can recover from this.

The situation in Delhi is awful, the Hospitals are overcrowded, there is a shortness of oxygen available, and there seems to sadly be a new person admitted to the hospital every minute. The COVID cases are being under reported, but this seems to be a case in all of South Asia, it is not an exclusively Indian problem.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">A relative of a COVID patient outside Delhi's largest hospital says there is no oxygen for patients outside waiting to be admitted, where many are dying before getting help.<br><br>Another gravely ill person arrives at the hospital midway through <a href="https://twitter.com/AlexCrawfordSky?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@AlexCrawfordSky</a>'s interview <a href="https://t.co/WZHjYQLdNO">pic.twitter.com/WZHjYQLdNO</a></p>— Sky News (@SkyNews) <a href="https://twitter.com/SkyNews/status/1385569375743250435?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 23, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Thanks guys for the kind words...

In last one week, I have seen 3 deaths in my extended circle, you are not even allowed to pay condolences and still I see some idiots not wearing a mask....

The state has just abdicated the responsibility...

state cannot do anything if people don't wear masks and don't want vaccination, because apparently it kills virility. this disaster is a joint collaboration by govts(center and state) and the people.

There are serpentine queues for vaccination in Mumbai, I didn't see anyone there saying it hurts virility... The stocks are getting over fast..

Covaxin vaccine is not readily available now, so you have covidshield everywhere now and those who took covaxin first jab have struuged to get second..

From 1st May everyone above 18 can go for vaccination and you would be surprised the slots are almost full, so please, the issue isn't a imaginary virility issue, it's lack of enough vaccines and planning..

And don't get me started on Oxygen and Remedesvir, that has killed a lot of people

May Allah the protect the poor of Ind and PK. Its inevitable that it will also happen in PK and we are even more vulnerable. Just like the BCCI learnt from the PCB horror show, we need to learn from the Ind experience on this wave. Make sure one person is given a clear role for oxygen distribution, ramp up production if its possible at this stage, get field hospitals ready and Pray.

I don't think it's inevitable that Pak will get it unless somehow the Indian variant of mutant has reached there...

Having said that, one should do the following

1) don't admit minor corona wala patients in hospitals, India / Pak doesn't have that luxury

2) Keep a tight control on oxygen manufacturing and it's supply to hospitals

3) same for medicines like Remsesvir etc

4) Discharge patients quickly if they have started recovering

5) Get people vaccinated ASAP

6) Impose very high fines for unmasked people

Did you see the queues a month ago? Of course, now there is panic and people who didn't want to get vaccinated are now lining up. How many people were wearing masks a month ago, and maintaining distance?

Lack of oxygen and remdesivir is not the cause, but the effect.

Indian hospitals turn away patients in COVID-19 ‘tsunami’

Overwhelmed hospitals in India begged for oxygen supplies on Saturday as the country’s coronavirus infections soared again overnight in a “tsunami” of disease, setting a new world record for cases for the third consecutive day.

Max Healthcare, which runs a network of hospitals in north India, tweeted that it had less than two hours of oxygen left while Fortis Healthcare, another big chain, said it was suspending new admissions in Delhi.

"We are running on backup, waiting for supplies since morning," Fortis said.

India is in the grip of a rampaging second wave of the pandemic, hitting a rate of one COVID-19 death in just under every four minutes in Delhi as the capital's underfunded health system buckles.

The government has deployed military planes and trains to get oxygen to Delhi from the far corners of the country and overseas including Singapore.

The number of cases across the country of around 1.3 billion rose overnight by 346,786, the Health Ministry said, for a total of 16.6 million cases, including 189,544 deaths.

COVID-19 deaths rose by 2,624 over the past 24 hours, the highest daily rate for the country so far. Crematoriums across Delhi said they were full up and asked grieving families to wait.

Hospitals in Delhi have gone to the city's high court this week seeking it to order the state and federal governments to make emergency arrangements for medical supplies, mainly oxygen.

"It's a tsunami. How are we trying to build capacity?" the Delhi high court asked the state and federal governments in response to this plea.

Television showed families tending to the sick in hospital corridors and streets as they waited for medical attention.

One man identified as Amit who was grieving for his brother at Delhi's Jaipur Golden hospital said he had seen families running around with oxygen cylinders trying to get them refilled.

"You can't leave me in the lurch," a lawyer appearing for the Jaipur Golden hospital told the high court on Saturday, seeking its intervention.

The court asked the government to ensure supplies, as well to make security arrangements for medical centres amid people's desperation.

"We know how people react, let's not have a law and order situation," the court said in its direction to the authorities.

India surpassed the U.S. record of 297,430 single-day infections anywhere in the world on Thursday, making it the global epicentre of a pandemic that is waning in many other countries.

Unless this strain of the virus somehow finds its way to a city like Karachi, I don't see that happening. Delhi, Mumbai are very densely populated and this thing spreads like wildfire. Pakistan, being less densely populated would be in a better position

In PK they have the Kent variant courtesy of us Desis returning. As far as I understand, It's transmission is just as bad.

Well the same takes place whenever a tragedy happens in Pakistan too

The airplane disaster everyone on tweeter was happy that terrorists died and it happens so many time that it's hard to count

When we start India needs oxygen, and they say terrorists died in civilian plane crash, than somewhere I have to blame the baghairti of Pakistani people

Cause at the end of the day these comments of dehumanizing Pakistani people are everywhere on the internet from twitter, newspapers, hell even Pakistani internet spaces have trolls dehumanizing Pakistanis (who I sincerely hope don't represent whole of India cause if they do both the countries are in deep doo doo..)

Just part of the internet experience of an average Pakistani nevigatting the internet

It only takes 1 (person).

It's nonsense to think that a strain that has already infected millions in India, and has already been discovered in other countries, including in the UK, won't eventually reach most of the major population centres in the world, and then spread like wildfire, especially those where the vaccination rates are very low, social distancing rules are ignored, and track & trace is almost non-existent.

You can bet that it's almost certainly already reached most of the larger cities in Pakistan.

It’s definitely reached Islamabad. 100% certain of that

As India reported the world's highest daily tally of coronavirus cases for the third day, surpassing 345,000 new cases, Pakistan on Saturday offered Covid-19 support to India in a gesture of solidarity.

India is in the grip of a rampaging second wave of the pandemic, hitting a rate of one Covid-19 death in just under every four minutes in Delhi as the capital's underfunded health system buckles.

The country's coronavirus infections rose by 346,786 overnight, the health ministry said, setting a new world record for the third consecutive day, as overwhelmed hospitals in the densely-populated country begged for oxygen supplies.

The Indian government has deployed military planes and trains to get oxygen from the far corners of the country to Delhi. Television showed an oxygen truck arriving at Delhi's Batra hospital after it issued an SOS saying it had 90 minutes of oxygen left for its 260 patients.

"Please help us get oxygen, there will be a tragedy here," Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed in a news conference on Friday.

"As a gesture of solidarity with the people of India in the wake of the current wave of Covid-19, Pakistan has offered to provide relief support to India including ventilators, Bi PAP, digital X-ray machines, PPEs (Personal protective equipments) and related items," a statement from the Foreign Office said.

The statement said that the concerned authorities of Pakistan and India can work out modalities for quick delivery of the relief items. "They can also explore possible ways of further cooperation to mitigate the challenges posed by the pandemic."

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi also shared the message of 'humanity first' on his official Twitter handle.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also expressed solidarity with the people of India. The premier said the country's prayers are with all those suffering from the deadly virus and for their early recovery in "our neighbourhood and the world".

He added that all countries must fight the global health crisis together as confronts humanity as a whole.

Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has also expressed concern over the Covid-19 situation across the border.

“In these difficult times our prayers are with people of India may God be kind and may these difficult times get over soon,” the information minister wrote on his official Twitter handle.

Pakistani citizens also rallied for their neighbours and called on PM Imran to alleviate the situation in India.

On Friday, Faisal Edhi, son of celebrated philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi and chairman of the foundation also offered help to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Health experts said India became complacent in the winter, when new cases were running at about 10,000 a day and seemed to be under control, lifting restrictions that allowed for the resumption of big gatherings.

Others said that it could also be a more dangerous variant of the virus coursing through the world's second most populous country where people live in close proximity, often six to a room.

"While complacency in adhering to masks and physical distancing might have played a role, it seems increasingly likely that this second wave has been fuelled by a much more virulent strain," wrote Vikram Patel, Professor of Global Health at Harvard Medical School, in the Indian Express.

WHO emergencies director Mike Ryan said reducing transmission in India would be a “very difficult task” but the government was working on limiting mixing between people, which he said was essential.

New Delhi [India], April 24 (ANI): Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has made an appeal to his fans in Pakistan to come forward and help India in tackling the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

India on Saturday recorded 3,46,786 new COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike since the pandemic broke out last year. According to the official data issued by the government, the country recorded 2,624 new deaths due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

"It is impossible for any government to tackle the ongoing crisis. I appeal to my government and fans, to help India. India does need a lot of oxygen tanks. I request everyone to donate and raise funds for India and deliver oxygen tanks to them," Akhtar said in a video on his
YouTube channel.
The former Pakistan pacer also expressed solidarity with citizens of India and said "we must become each other's support" in these testing times amid the pandemic.

"India is really struggling with Covid-19. Global support needed. Health care system is crashing. Its a Pandemic, we are all in it together. Must become each other's support," Akhtar tweeted.

Earlier in the day, India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja said the nation needs to be united in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic as the country is battling with a second wave of the virus.

He also urged countrymen to follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour and thanked healthcare workers for their selfless service.

"Right now more than ever we need to be united in our fight against Covid-19. Please wear a mask, follow social distancing and let's adhere to the government norms. As citizens,we must be responsible, and I thank the doctors, nurses for their selfless service in these tough times," he wrote on Twitter.

Echoing similar sentiments, CSK batsman Suresh Raina said the medical infrastructure system is slowly collapsing and lives are at risk
due to the Covid-19 situation in the country. He urged people to stay home and help the frontline workers to do their job.

"India is battling a crisis situation today. The medical infrastructure is slowly collapsing, resources depleting and more lives at risk than ever before. There is no pain greater than seeing your loved one fight the battle.

"My humble request to everyone - if you have the choice to stay home, please do it to keep yourself, your family and your nation safe. Do your bit to help the doctors, police, paramedics and govt authorities do their job. That is the need of the hour!" Raina tweeted. (ANI)

Reading stories that the wealthy are buying up beds in the private sector even if they only have mild symptoms just in case their symptoms get worse which is creating more shortages for those who actually need the beds. Disappointing, but this is what happens in countries where money is a pass for everything.

When resources, especially life saving ones, are scarce, then it should be distributed based on the value of life. Ideally all lives are equal, when there are enough resources, but a decision must be made in such times. a health worker, a doctor would have higher value than a non doctor. A rich person would have a higher value than a poor. Tough decision, but fair.

Could be argued that a wealthy person has a higher value than a health worker as well if we are being realistic. If a doctor and a millionaire are vying for the same bed, isn't the one who can pay going to get preference? Assuming there isn't only one doctor in the hospital, could be likely that the administration would think they could manage with one or two less for the right money.

You've got to be kidding me....

Best wishes to everyone in India and indeed everywhere who is enduring this awful pandemic.

I remember Zee news headlines last year’Ab corona ki maut marega Pakistan’

Be careful what you wish for !!

That's just the tip of the iceberg to be honest. This is not the right time to talk about this in great detail, however the things I heard from some Indians in the past especially relating to terrorist attacks in Pakistan were downright vile and disgusting.

No.

A doctor or a teacher or a nurse, sure.

But rich people who perform no such role should be rock bottom of the list. There is no benefit to be gained by saving a Prince Andrew or even a captain of industry, as they have no skill set that takes years to train someone for.

Yes, it could be argued. I only gave how I would decide, others can differ. The reason I valued rich over poor because a rich person brings more value to society in terms of money flow and employment. I would put a younger person ahead of an elderly, because in general the young have to take care of their kids and their parents, so their dependency is more. also elderly have lived more of their life. It gets complicated when say it is a pregnant woman who is poor and a rich person. Maybe just maybe, I would go for the pregnant woman, but still not sure.

Your opinion is valid. These moral dilemmas don't necessarily have one correct answer. You have your justification, I have mine.

Pak’s Edhi Foundation offers to send 50 ambulances to help India

Pakistan’s Edhi Foundation, renowned for its humanitarian relief work, on Friday offered to send a fleet of 50 ambulances to India to assist efforts to cope with a massive surge in Coronavirus infections that has swamped health services in several cities.

The offer was conveyed in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Faisal Edhi, the director of Edhi Foundation and the son of late Abdul Sattar Edhi, the founder of the organisation.

“We are very sorry to hear about the exceptionally heavy impact that the pandemic has had on your country, where a tremendous number of people are suffering immensely. As a neighbouring friend, we sympathise with you greatly and during this strenuous time, we would like to extend our help in the form of fleet of 50 ambulances along with our services to assist you in addressing, and further circumventing, the current health conditions,” said the letter, which was sent to the Indian mission in Islamabad.

Speaking over phone from Karachi, Faisal Edhi told Hindustan Times that the organisation made the offer after witnessing the hardship being faced by Indian people in news reports.

“The people are suffering and this affected us. We have dealt with Covid-19 cases across Pakistan and we have the experience of operating in such situations. That’s why we offered our services,” he said.

“If permission is given by the Indian side, we are mentally and physically prepared to go across and do whatever we can to help. We will fully cooperate with the Indian authorities and are prepared to operate in any city they allow us to operate in,” he added.

The Edhi Foundation said in its letter that it wished to extend full support to Indian authorities without causing any inconvenience and would arrange all supplies that would be needed by any of its teams allowed to operate across the border.

“We are not seeking any assistance from the Indian side for our operations. We will carry our own food, fuel and other supplies and our team will include emergency medical technicians, drivers and support staff,” Faisal Edhi said.

Given the strained ties between the two countries, observers said it was unlikely that the Edhi Foundation’s offer would be accepted. Asked about this matter, Faisal Edhi replied: “We have made the offer and are fully prepared to help by operating wherever the Indian authorities want us to assist. We will cooperate fully with the local administrations and police departments.”

The Edhi Foundation’s ambulance services across Pakistan are known for being more efficient than state-run services and often reach the site of accidents or terror attacks before government ambulances. The foundation also operates orphanages, hospitals, homes for the elderly, graveyards, langars or free kitchens.

The foundation has often assisted Indian fishermen held in Pakistani jails, especially in Karachi, and facilitated their repatriation.

Abdul Sattar Edhi, who died in 2016, and his wife Bilquis played key roles in looking after Geeta, the deaf Indian woman who accidentally strayed across the border when she was nine. Bilquis personally cared for Geeta till she was repatriated in 2015. Earlier this year, Geeta was reunited with her family at Parbhani in Maharastra.

Dumb stuff by faisal edhi. No need to do such dramaybazi, pakistan would be needing these medical facilities in coming days we cant afford to donate others.

Pakistan has thia habit of donatinf and helping other countries just to come accross friendly when we ourselves cant afford it.

Anyways, this is Indias internal matter and we shouldnt help

Thanks guys. Means a lot.

Just lost a colleague this morning.

Truly sorry to hear about your tragic loss - the family of your colleague must be devastated.

The only 'good' thing to come out of India's current crisis is the outpouring of love expressed for our Indian brethren, as well as the expressions of support and offers of help from all around the world.

Indians are not alone - they are in our prayers. God bless.

India doesn't deserve any help from Pakistan.

I won't even bother explaining why it is so

No they were literally exporting Astrazenaca to European countries and even offered it to Canada out of "goodwill" which Canada had no interest in using

(ANI)

Akhtar told on his YouTube channel, "Agar itni badi pandemic phael raha hai toh June mein yeh na ho PSL. Please, iss samay IPL important nai hai. De do IPL ke paise logon ko. Oxygen tanks aajaye, log marne se bach jaaye. Nai chahiye aisa cricket bhai. Nai chahiye aise heroes. Humme nai chahiye aisa entertainment, aisa cricket, nai chahiye PSL ya IPL. Humme chahiye ki Hindustan mein log bache. Pakistan mein log bache. Main dukh se bol raha hun, takleef se bol raha hun. Abhi logon ki jaaney important hai. Agar humara program band karana hai toh bilkul band kara de, woh isiliye ki agar humari social distancing nai horahi toh kaise kare program."

(If we are dealing with such a pandemic, then we shouldn't have PSL's resumption in June. This is not the right time for IPL 2021. Please give IPL's money to the people in need, to buy oxygen tanks and save lives. We don't want such a cricket, such heroes, at this time. We don't want entertainment, we don't want PSL or IPL. We want that lives are saved in India and Pakistan. I'm saying all this with a lot of pain and disappointment. People's lives are more important right now. If you want our show to be cancelled, so be it too.)

Thoughts and prayers only for your friends in india? What about indians like me and CJ who are not friends with any pakistani?

I don't actually have friends in India, it's just something we say in America when wish well for a community or an entire country. Also by "friends" I'm mainly speaking about the Indian contingent on PP so that would include you.

Giannis - Thanks a lot for your good wishes bro and same to all the posters from everywhere for their kind thoughts.

India does need prayer and help from all quarters.
While situation is fine in most of the places, it is very bad in certain pockets like Delhi. Needs to be controlled otherwise it could spread everywhere.

New Delhi remains tight-lipped on Islamabad's offer

Hardline BJP administration shows no signs of accepting Pakistan's medical assistance

LAHORE:
Even as Covid cases spiral and its health system grinds to a halt, India remains tight-lipped about the possibility of opening the border and accepting Pakistan’s offers to assist its virus-ravaged neighbour.

Despite an alarming shortage of oxygen supplies, hospital beds, and record numbers of deaths, the government in New Delhi has remained silent about opening the border, which will allow Pakistan to deliver essential medical supplies.

Even the fast-spreading pandemic, which regional experts believe, provided a unique opportunity for cross border cooperation, has failed to bridge the chasm between the two arch-rivals.

“Border closures and suspended trade activities will not resolve the disputes between India and Pakistan, both countries will have to take a step forward and initiate dialogue,” said Dr. Devika Mittal, a New Delhi-based peace activist.

A proponent of peace, Dr. Mittal urged the political leadership on both sides to extend unconditional support to each other at all times and particularly during the pandemic.

“India and Pakistan should aim for better ties under all circumstances,” said Dr. Mittal from India’s capital which is under complete lockdown since the recent surge in coronavirus cases.

Armed to the teeth, Dr. Mittal said, both India and Pakistan, have failed to defeat the coronavirus. One country, she explained, does not have the vaccine while the other lacks oxygen. "Both nations are nuclear powers, but we have collectively failed in our fight against the deadly epidemic,” she said.

Shortly after the onset of the pandemic last year, India decided to cut off whatever limited border exchange was left between Islamabad and New Delhi, even closing the newly inaugurated Kartarpur Corridor, which was hailed as a glimmer of hope in the perennially tense relationship.

The move not only prevented regular movement, but also Sikh pilgrims from visiting Pakistan to attend some of Sikhism’s holiest rituals. After the community pleaded, New Delhi relaxed the rules, allowing a little more than 800 pilgrims to visit Pakistan. However, to appease his Hindu hardline base, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sealed the border shortly after the Sikh pilgrims returned to India earlier this month.

Critics on this side of the border believe Prime Minister Modi’s approach is aimed at making both sides run in circles and just before meaningful progress can be made, the diplomatic channels are deliberately abandoned by the Indian leadership. They described it as a distraction that enables New Delhi to continue its policies in Kashmir.

“India wants to keep Pakistan entangled in the restoration of bilateral trade, religious tourism, and train service," said Abdul Basit, who served as Islamabad’s top envoy in New Delhi. "The BJP administration is simply buying more time to continue the process of demographic change in Kashmir,” cautioned the diplomat.

Google and Microsoft have pledged to support India as it tackles record numbers of coronavirus cases that have overwhelmed the country's hospitals.

Sundar Pichai, the head of Google and parent company Alphabet, said he was "devastated" by events and the firm would provide $18m (£13m) in funding.

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella said he was "heartbroken" and would help India with its shortage of oxygen supplies.

Both chief executives of the technology giants were born in India.

Mr Pichai, who was born and schooled in the southern Indian city of Chennai, announced Google's funding move in a tweet on Sunday, linking to a statement by vice-president of Google India, Sanjay Gupta.

"Right now India is going through our most difficult moment in the pandemic thus far," the statement said.

Mr Gupta said he wanted to help ensure Indian families and communities "get the information and support they need" through Google's technology services - such as using search and Google Maps to locate testing and vaccination centres - and through the provision of grants.

The aim would be to "provide cash assistance to families hit hardest by the crisis to help with their everyday expenses", he said, adding that there was also a need "to help get urgent medical supplies, including oxygen and testing equipment, to where it's needed most".

Mr Nadella, who was born in Hyderabad and appointed chief executive of Microsoft in 2014, pledged to help with India's relief efforts and buy "oxygen concentration devices".

India is suffering from a critical shortage in the supply of oxygen to Covid-19 patients, forcing many hospitals to turn people away.

The government has approved plans for more than 500 oxygen generation plants across the country to boost supplies.

Mr Nadella added that he was "grateful" that the US had lifted a ban on sending raw materials for vaccines to India, enabling it to make more of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

President Joe Biden said earlier that the US was "determined to help India in its time of need". "Just as India sent assistance to the United States as our hospitals were strained early in the pandemic," he said.

On Monday, India recorded a new global high for daily coronavirus cases for a fifth straight day at 352, 991.

Good on Babar.

Question to the posters living in India can you share personal stories and how is the situation compared to the past. Do people in certain parts of India have regular problems with air / breathing?

Stay safe.

My best wishes to all our Indian friends who post on PakPassion and my best wishes to everyone in India.

Hopefully things get under control, horrible to see family’s go through this again

Thoughts and prayers only with those Indian's who oppose oppression. I know many Kashmiris, none are praying for India am afraid.

Look at the following picture. This is what's happening these days in hospitals.

At least both of them got a bed, albeit on sharing basis!

Have seen so many Covid patients resorting to breathing from Oxygen cylinders on pavements, roads simply because there are no beds in hospitals.

Heartbreaking to see what’s happening. I really hope the situation in India improves and serves as a reminder to other countries like Pakistan that covid is real and dangerous. I’ve lost 2 family members to Covid complications and have zero respect for the people who are not social distancing or think this is some massive propaganda. We are all covid fatigued but we need to continue doing what’s right. Actual lives are at stake here.

My thoughts and prayers to all of our indian colleagues on Pakpassion. I hope you are all ok and so are your relatives.

No sane person will deny corona. Fact is 98% have very mild or no issues. The problem is that its over a year now and the other side hardly gets mentioned its covid 24/7.

All we can do is hope but it doesnt look too good. On all fronts.

My thoughts are with all Indian posters who are part of the PP community. Stay safe folks and take care of yourselves.

With respect to the pandemic, I am sure this is not an original thought, but the overriding reaction is numbness. There's a bit of anger, a bit of despair, a bit of horror, but mostly numb pessimism.

Cliche, but I hope India and Pakistan pull through.

The people in India as well as those across the world are constantly in my thoughts and in my prayers. May Allah Azza Wajjal arrest this awful calamity that's ruined so many lives, Ameen..

There was a massive earthquake in Pakistan in 2005, and in India (Gujarat) in 2001. Both countries helped each other on those occasions, so your views are silly and distasteful.

Your point is valid. The situation in pakistan isn’t much better in reality and we do need these equipment and ambulances ourselves.

Having said that Faisal Edhi probably knew that india wont take him up on this offer and its just to show a goodwill gesture.

Moral support also matter and indians at the end of the day are our blood brothers. All differences aside, we should do whatever we can possibly do to help the poor in India. I ve family that stayed back in India in 1947 and i do feel concerned about them.

we need to get over this racist "blood brother" nonsense, no such thing exists and I'm telling you as a geneticist. Humans should help other humans regardless.
