Given he is now the obvious name on Pak team sheet with Babar and SSA, should he now be given the responsibility of Babar's deputy across all formats?

currently, he owns it in tests but y not in LOI?

Shadab is on a serious nose dive in form and one good performance from Usman/Zahid can seriously push him down the picking order massively. Plus his fitness is real concern these days

Ideal time to blend Rizwan in that role .... he has respect from Babar and other team players as well and this shld put an end to all the conspiracy behind "bring sarfraz back"

Rizwan is the icon of Pakistani cricket now along with Babar and Shaheen. May be fakhar will break into this league too if he continues this freak like form.

IMO Rizwan should be given VC role and probably captaincy of T20Is too to decrease burden on Babar.

It should never have been Shadab to begin with. Rizwan has always been the perfect choice

Rizwan should be the captain in all formats. He has the skillset for it - can be the Dhoni/Sangakkara of Pakistan.

Let Babar focus on his batting.

Yes. Makes no sense to have Shadab as VC.

Rizwan is the best guy for the job.

Arguably better captaincy material (on the face of it) than Babar - I'd just let Rizwan be. He's batting well, playing well and highly regarded. Let him continue without additional responsibilities or politics.

I don't think he would have the kind of pressure Babar had becz he has been doing captaincy for years now, something Babar didn't have... Babar even doesn't captain his PSL side which is a shame

I think Rizwan will love the added responsibility .... man we wasted a good 2 years of this guy .. he was great from the time he played post 2015 wc

Eh? If anything Babar looks like he's better at batting with the captaincy.

Rizwan struggled against Adil Rashid in the 2015 series against England, and looked all at sea in Australia and South Africa in the ODI series in 2017 and 2019.

It's these last couple of years where his white ball game has significantly improved, especially since he's worked on powerhitting with the help of the late Dean Jones at KK.

His balance is much better when looking to hit big compared to then.

To answer the OP's question, yes especially since Shadab Khan doesn't even merit a place on the bench let alone the XI right now.

Rizwan would actually have been a better choice for captain, let babar focus on his batting without the pressure. Rizwan seems a very level headed mature individual.

They will be the Fab Four of Pakistan cricket for next decade.

He didn't get a game for Karachi so he clearly hadn't worked on his power hitting there. This is clearly after his stint under Razzaq and Younis Khan.

The NT20 Cup that Khyber won under his captaincy was where he finally displayed his unreal hitting ability. He was still regarded as a joke by 95% of the fanbase but it's given rise to the same Rizwan we see today. God love Dean Jones. Great guy but giving a franchise credit who didn't even play him and opted to start a international failure like Walton is a bit of a joke

I'm sure you must know the difference between not getting selected and still coaching/training someone on a skill.

I mentioned Dean Jones because I listened to him in an interview speak about showing Rizwan some videos of golf ball and baseball striking techniques to help him with boundary hitting.

And good on Rizwan for working hard on his white ball game because his T20I numbers prior to the New Zealand tour were very poor.

He definitely should be the vice captain for the white ball teams. Was an incredibly stupid decision to make Shadab vice captain cause he shouldn’t even be in the team.

They will be the Fab Four of Pakistan cricket for next decade.

except for may be Shaheen ... none of these will play in next decade.

Fakhar is 30
Babar is 26
Rizwan is 28

Babar might take the Younis or Misbah route and go for big Stats. I feel Imam-ul-Haq may ... may ... step up in future as symbol of Pakistani cricket.

100% I can definitely understand and see merits for Rizwan being the captain, his domestic form has been very good aswell for KP/MS, whom he Captains as you rightly point out.

I just can't see Babar being removed from the position as Pakistan's poster boy - he is performing in addition to Pakistan winning their recent series' aswell.

Rizwan has been superb in all the formats. He is the best wicketkeeper batsman across formats. He should definitely be made vice captain.

there is no argument about removing Babar... Babar needs to stay there at the top... Rizwan should be his deputy ... he has the game awareness better than most.. plus this would put an end to all the conspiracy theories abt sarfraz

HE has it all. The grit, the endurance, the acumen, the finesse, and the ever-growing will to rise and rise amid adversity. And the man is proudly showcasing these traits on the field across all formats.

Mohammad Rizwan indeed is the newest star on Pakistan’s cricket horizon.

The professional way this 28-year-old rock-solid lad from Peshawar in recent times has precisely developed his skill set with his natural never-say-die attitude is exemplary and rare in our part of the world.

Agile as a leopard, the stocky player remains productively active and involved behind the stumps as well as in front of it. Batting however has been his biggest plus while he is part of a batting line-up that normally struggles. A plucky nature backed by the game’s acumen have enabled him to adapt to various playing conditions against different opponents with marked success.

So powerful has been Rizwan’s willow work of late that the right-hander is now regular facing the new ball with captain Babar Azam in fast white-ball contests.

Bear in mind Rizwan made his ODI, T20 debuts in 2015 and started his Test journey back in 2016 and he remained in and out of the national team several times as Sarfraz Ahmed was the first-choice national wicket-keeper during that period. Two fighting hundreds by Rizwan in a 5-0 ODI whitewash at the hands of Australia in the UAE on the eve of the 2019 World Cup surprisingly could not impress the selectors. But he is a man of steely nerves and genuinely positive character which he superbly displayed during 2020, the renaissance year for him.

And then came the valiant player’s meteoric rise to fame — since the New Zealand tour in late 2020 that has stunned as well as pleased fans and the game’s experts alike.

“Rizwan is an Adam Gilchrist-like find of Pakistan cricket,” former Pakistan captain Asif Iqbal told Dawn when he was asked to comment on the extraordinary performance delivered by the wicket-keeper/batsman in recent contests.

“I can recall that he batted outstandingly [89 at Napier] in the third T20 International on last year’s tour to New Zealand and led his team to victory though they had already lost the series 2-0.

“Rizwan then also led in the Test series on the same tour and though the team lost both the Tests, his own batting performance [three half-centuries in four innings] was outstanding. After this magnificent show in New Zealand, he has not looked back,” remarked Asif who led Pakistan at the 1975 and 1979 World Cups.

His exploits during Pakistan’s England tour last year has also earned him the prestigious Wisden Cricketer of The Year award. The elevated stature of Rizwan was also recognised when he was named the 2020 Test Cricketer of the Year by the PCB.

With Rizwan’s transformation, Pakistan’s top-order in limited-overs contests suddenly looks quite sturdy. Babar, Fakhar Zaman and Rizwan make a strong combination which can certainly help the green-shirts’ cause in this year’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in India.

However, one feels the team management — on Rizwan’s evolution as a world-class player — needs to devise a meticulous strategy to make the best use of this player of outstanding abilities in order to help Pakistan cricket grow and improve on the world stage. The first prerequisite for the management in this regard is to let the tough guy operate in his own way as long as he is delivering the results. Tinkering of any kind with the technique or temperament of this player who heavily relies on flair to outgun the opponent can be fatally counterproductive both for the player and of course the team.

Rizwan, who regularly keeps wickets, is proving equally prolific with the bat in all three formats and is very close to becoming a top gun of Pakistan cricket, and therefore the highly talented player should be kept in full bloom for top-notch contests. The management, batting coach Younis Khan in particular, in this connection is naturally expected to keep an eye on the workload of the player. For instance, playing him as a regular opener in T20s, while giving gloves to Sarfraz can be a fruitful recipe which worked in Harare last Sunday.

According to Asif Iqbal, Pakistan can gain more by giving Rizwan a left-handed opening partner in limited-overs games.

“Rizwan [in T20s] should open alongside a left-hander, say Fakhar or Sharjeel Khan, which would give Pakistan a right-left combination while a solid Babar coming at No.3,” he said.

Aggression is Rizwan’s forte, which the player has shown in all formats against top-shelf opponents. Now if properly utilised, this brave and intelligent professional can serve Pakistan well for a long time to come.

He's probably the best player in the team atm, on current form he is even better & certainly more impactful than Babar. He should definitely be announced as a vice-captain ASAP.

Thats where the problem lies and we will never be able to develop natural leader :

Ok, we make Rizwan Vice captain... what next after 3 series, if he fails, we replace him with some Man of the moment,,, and again play musical chairs where every team member feels he was the captain but because of some one else he lost that position...

Captaincy should be a responsibility (that someone can do naturally, not an incentive). And for that matter, no additional monetary benefits should be given to a captain

Look how Ganguly, Ponting, Mccullum, Steve Waugh, Michael Vaughan, and (Dhoni early years) became captain... They were not the best players in their respective teams for most of the times.. But were picked for their strategy, leadership, and man management skills apart from their decentish performances..
While Dhoni and Ponting became much better after becoming captain.. Ganguly, Steve Waugh , and others remain very decentish performers making best use of their best performers

Let rizwan continue to perform with the bat and gloves no need to add extra responsibility

In some matches I feel he is taking over the captaincy in the way that he takes charge. Really impressed by him

If the Babar experiment doesn't work Pakistan need a guy to fall back on. Rizwan seems like the natural candidate. He has established himself in the side, has experience leading the Pakistan Emerging team and KPK. And seems like someone who has the ability to lead a team. No point in not making him VC.

Definitely.. he gives vibes of a natural leader. Have a great character and surely a hunger to achieve bigger and bigger milestones.

He will be a much better captain than Babar.

I don't get why Shadab Khan is such a flavour of the month for PCB. I'm yet to be convinced by his leadership qualities and skills.

To me he looks like he is still in the learning phase.

Shadab has half the intelligence and maturity of Rizwan. Shocking Rizzy is not VC yet

Additionally he is not an automatic choice in the playing 11. He needs define his role for himself. , if he wants be a batsman or a bowler. Bits and pieces shouldn’t be the role for vc

Babar's captaincy has been under fire since game 1!

Hope PCB are doing realistic assessments and keeping all other options in mind.

I see charisma and a personality in Rizwan. He seems like more of a leader to me than Babar. When he talks, he means business and speaks with conviction. He definitely has aura and leadership qualities.

Babar on the other hand seems very shy and timid. He speaks without conviction and looks lost in interviews and on the field.

Rizwan averages 28 in ODIs, less after that dismissal.

The point of making someone captain is that they hold the place.

Right now, Rizwan isn't even performing up to his own standards, and I'm strongly considering to bring Sarfaraz in given his record in England.

Biased treatment of Shadab has led him to a standstill as player. He is neither a batter nor a bowler now. Vice captaincy is giving him false assurance of his progress.

Sometimes I genuinely feel it is Sohail Khan who is making these comments...

Rizwan will be exposed against better teams; just wait and watch

Well said. It’s a shame that Rizwan is only giving top tier performances against pathetic line ups such as New Zeland Australia and England at home or the South African line up that just demolished the West Indies. Really Rizwan will be exposed when he faces better teams such as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh
