Mysuru MP Pratap Simha wanted the contribution of Wadiyars for the development of railways to be recognised.

The Railways has renamed Tipu Express, which plies between Mysuru and Bengaluru, as Wodeyar Express while an express service from Mysuru to Talaguppa has been named after poet laureate Kuvempu.

The demand was made by Mysuru MP Pratap Simha, in a letter to Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw a few months ago. His plea was approved and a notification to this effect was issued by the Railway Board on Friday, and the order renaming the train will come into effect from Saturday.

However, Mr. Simha’s critics have slammed the move on the grounds that this was in continuation of the BJP name-changing spree to efface historical legacy of Muslim rulers.

Mr. Simha, in his letter, highlighted the contribution of the Wadiyars to the development and expansion of railways in the then princely Mysore state.

Similarly, the Talguppa-Mysuru Express has been renamed as Kuvempu Express after the poet laureate, who was born in Tirthahalli in Shivamogga district.

While there is no controversy over renaming the Talguppa Express after Kuvempu, the renaming of Tipu Express has drawn a mixed response.

A section of railway activists, who constantly bat for better amenities for passengers, said there was no doubt that the Wadiyars of Mysore made immense contribution for expansion of rail connectivity in the State. The authorities could have honoured the Wadiyars with a new train and a new rake instead of renaming an old train, said the railway activists who did not wish to be named and wade into the controversy.

But Mr. Simha had, in the letter, justified his demands on the grounds that there was no railway system in India during the regime of Tipu Sultan while the Wadiyars had invested heavily in promoting railways as a means of fast transportation and ensure timely relief during famine.

Tipu Express was flagged off on April 15, 1980 as a superfast train connecting Mysuru and Bengaluru, and the train covered the 139 km between the two cities in 3.15 hours chugging along the single-line metre gauge track.

Asaduddin Owaisi slams Centre for renaming Tipu Express as Wodeyar Express

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday slammed the Central government for renaming Tipu Express as Wodeyar Express and suggested the BJP took this decision out of its dislike for Tipu Sultan.

He claimed that Tipu Sultan irks the BJP but the party will never be able to "erase" his legacy.

While speaking to media, the Hyderabad MP said, "BJP govt renamed Tipu Express to Wodeyar Express. Tipu irks BJP because he waged 3 wars against its British masters. Another train could have been named after Wodeyars. BJP will never be able to erase Tipu’s legacy."

Earlier on Friday, the Railway Board renamed Tipu Express, which connects Mysuru with Bengaluru, as Wodeyar Express.

The Railways effected the change following a representation from Mysuru MP Pratap Simha to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in July this year.

Simha had also requested that the express service between Mysuru and Talaguppe be named in honour of state poet Kuvempu. The Railways accepted both the suggestions and the orders came into effect from Saturday.

Launched in 1980, Tipu Express is a superfast train connecting Mysuru and Bengaluru. The train covers a distance of 139 km in little over three hours on a single-line metre gauge track.

The move to replace the Muslim king's name with a Hindu dynasty's name has come for criticism from some quarters who see it as furthering the ruling BJP's saffronisation agenda.

However, in his plea to the Railway Minister, Simha has justified his request on the grounds that the Wodeyars had contributed immensely to the railway infrastructure in their realm.

While the Wodeyars were the Hindu rulers of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom in present day Karnataka, Tipu Sultan was the Muslim ruler of Srirangapattana, who died fighting the British.

I don't get it. If you wanted to wipe out colonial history, why keep Express in the name? Seems at first glance that the BJP want to wipe out Muslim rulers of the past, but are scared to confront their former British masters.

Can't wipe out everything. Nobody is destroying Taj Mahal or Red fort or a bridge built by British. The changes will be cosmetic and at best through architecture. Street names, City names and the idea is to stop glorifying the Islamic and British rules. English language has served the Indians well. There is an attempt to revive education in native languages but English will stay. It will help the educated Indians competitive in the world. Always remember, for the right wing nationalists, country comes first before religion. And economy is paramount for country's progress.

Thanks. Not sure why Hindu culture is so necessary to maintain in the modern era, or the language for that matter. What does India have to offer us who live much better lifestyles in the west?

Should be renamed APJ express or TATA express to honor the services of Mr.Kalam or Ratan Tata.

The taj or red fort or a British bridge was built by money from India, using Indian labour, why will we destroy them?

What is needed is to stop glorification of such invaders.

The christian population never has any issues when names of British imperalists are removed, but politicians create issues if names of muslim tyrants are removed. Wonder why?

Are you saying that only Hindus have a right to names in Ind and other communities must have their names wiped from history? If you are so desperate to get rid of all non Hindu legacies start with the English language- thought not

Its not about hindus or muslims or anything. Its about not glorifying invading tyrants.

Many things have been named after Sikh, Christian,Muslim,Jain,Parsi etc.

They will never confront their English masters, hence Tipu will be removed, but Express will remain. Rule Brittania, Brittania rules the waves.
